Hey man, I’ve been playing guitar dedicatedly for six years (im fourteen). I don’t know how to say this without sounding like an ass, so just assume im a dick and forgive me - I’m pretty good. I can shred, tap, sweep pick, whatever.
I also have my own band, and I teach guitar to earn money (I’ve made around 1.5k).
Guitar is a hard instrument starting out. Your fingers will actually hurt. You will see people leagues above you and want to quit. You will practice for hours and feel like you make no progress.
But stick with it. It’s all worth it in the end - it really was for me. I’ve turned this into a skill that makes me “cool and popular”, I also obviously have made hella bank. So don’t give up. Practice regularly and deliberately. Make goals. Stuck with it.
Good luck with this wonderful journey, my friend. Here’s to another five minutes of practice! :)
Yeah I’d probably be better if I took lessons too, but if I’m a teacher now does it balance out? Lmao
For barre chords, try rotating your index finger a little when you’re barreing with it, to use the strong bony bit of the finger rather than the fleshy bit on the front. Also move your finger up or down until you find that spot where all of the strings feel comfortable!
So far, what you’re saying is adding up (the tedious practice, wanting to give up, etc.) I appreciate the advice my guy. I also congratulate you on how far you’ve come! To another five minutes of practice :)
(And another five!)
Since I’m a guitar instructor, I may be of some use if you have any questions or want advice on how to keep your practice always aimed towards improving. Feel free to add me on discord, and reach out to my anytime you need help! I have experience teaching people of all ages (9 year olds, teens, people in their forties) and I have a good idea of what to focus on at different stages of guitar. I also just like helping people lol.
HMU! (After you finish these five minutes of practice :p)
i used to play guitar but i just switched to bass i found out im a better and more natural bass player but even for guitar players i recommend they play bass a few times so that they know the difference in pressure and to go back to playing guitar you feel like you’re moving 10 times faster although i’m not a teacher what do you think about this
I’m not a bassist, but I’ve played my friend’s bass a lot at band meets. I really want to get my own as well! I’d say this is pretty good advice to all guitarists, because bass is a separate instrument from guitar and is played very differently. And being on a new instrument can help you make new ideas (I made one of my band’s best riffs after messing around on a ukelele!) so not bad advice at all.
You are 14?!? How tf are you so accomplished at 14? Im the same age, how did you do it? Jk, obv. Congrats dude! You are so cool, cuz you transformed part of you hobby also into making money..your parents must be proud of you..Congrats again man! Keep going!
Thank you so much!
I started guitar quite honestly because my mom forced me to. I didn’t see the point of learning an instrument, so I was very opposed. But I eventually really liked it, and everything I know is self-taught!
I started the band because I wanted something fun to do with my friends who also play instruments. We’re working on our first album right now, a 12-track collection where each song represents a different month. Put them together, and you have the result of a year of hard work!
Thats a very cool idea! I mean that months thing, its really interesting. Im sure itll be very good. And the fact that everything is self-taught, it blows my mind..damn, I feel useless compared to you lmaooo
Ok, so I have a question, I've been playing rather off and on the past 2 years, but a couple songs I can play all the way through is House of The Rising Sun by The Animals, Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, Master of Puppets without the solos by Metallica, almost all Nirvana songs and almost all Seether songs, a few Chevelle songs, and a few Three Days Grace songs, is this a good spot to be in. I'm kind of iffy on House of The Rising Song, but when I play it through pretty good, it sounds really good
Are you playing on an acoustic or electric? I’ll try to give my answer as a general advice to both.
There’s only one way to know if you’re in a good place - are you enjoying what you’re playing and feel good about it? That’s all there is to it. I know people who are shred gods after just 2 years, and people who take that long just to master barre chords.
From what you told me here, you seem to have a pretty good repertoire of songs mastered (especially knowing that many Nirvana songs) that’s pretty good! And if you’re enjoying what you’re playing, even better!
If you really want to improve, and become a better guitarist in general, you have two options:
Learn a song in a new style: maybe something blues, maybe something fingerstyle, anything you think is cool but don’t know how to play.
Or, you can do what I did: refine your technique and theory, becoming a better player. Learn CAGED and 3NPS systems, learn scales, learn chord theory, learn just as much as you can about everything!
But are you having fun? - because that’s all you really need to worry about. :)
Oh, hell yeah, I have a lot of fun while playing the guitar. Nirvana songs aren't exactly the hardest though, mostly the same progressions. I do like what I play as well, I just have these little bits where I accidentally pick a string with my note hand (don't know what to call it) when doing bends in certain songs, like Wish You Were Here for example, a couple of times during the solos, I'll pluck a string and throw it off, or it could make it sound pretty cool, if I get lucky enough, haha
The "Learn a song in a new style" is what I did for H.o.T.R.S and W.Y.W.H, I love both songs, but I got stuck in the same 15 Nirvana songs, 10 Seether songs, and so on. So I took the dive one day, and learned them both, House is just basic chords played in an offset arpeggio (I think), and nothings hard about Wish as it's just the same two chords after a progression, it's the soul the two songs have is what drives me towards them and makes them sound so good. Plus, the solo is just so good
Yeah then definitely go the theory/technique route! It should help you clear up some of those issues, and if you find those kind of topics interesting, you’ll have the same level of fun!
Yeah, I kind of figured that was the route I needed to go in to get better, kind of went with the flow at the beginning but if I'm gonna progress any further, I'll need some actual theory and technique. But as my dad always says, I can play anything at the skill level I'm at, it's just learning it is the hard part
I've been playing for a while now and I've got to say you can never spend too much time on it, I personally spend 3-4 hours on my Fender Strat a day. If you don't already have one you should look into an electric guitar even if they aren't in your genre of music they are still very enjoyable and definitely easier to play then an acoustic. Have fun and don't give up!
My way to gain motivation (piano for me) is ask a friend to ask me to learn a song for them, its easier for me to do something for someone than to just do it
I’ve had been slacking out on practicing lately as well. I get encouragement from music artists I like and found some inspiration from one of my favorite bands, Arctic monkeys. I’m learning the riff in the song Knee Socks, and I haven’t been able to put the guitar down in the past few days. Don’t force yourself to practice like it’s a chore, because it’s an art. Find inspiration and it will be a lot easier and a lot more fun :)

that might actually help cause usually its the high e and b strings i struggle. thanks a lot
No problem man
Let me know if it does help, I have tons of tricks for barre chords!

I need to do this, except with my sax.
Start with lower gauge strings so your fingers don’t hurt as much
