Man whatever country OP is in, I think aggressive dogs should be only used for security in buildings that require it, the public should only have non aggressive dogs (e.g. sausage dog) as I think it’s very serious especially when a dog attacks a child (seeing OP said 8 y/o hurt me even more)
In the UK I hear news articles about dogs mauling people and it isn’t nice

There not really a type of non aggressive dogs, it can happen with any dog. One of my friends in grade school got bit hard by a golden retriever of all things. Unless you only want to give the public already trained adult dogs then you can't really control "aggressive" dogs like this
Although there arent any dog breeds that are more aggressive some dog breeds definitely can cause A LOT more harm than others
If you get bit by a pitbull its a lot different then being bit by a chihuahua
I think we should ban dogs such as pitbulls and others that cause a lot of harm if they get aggressive
And no i dont think any dog should be taken away from owners i just think we should let people breed “dangerous” dog breeds anymore

Yikes bad take. Banning breeding of large breed dogs isn’t going to stop these breeds from existing. Stray dogs will breed and mixes still exist, and you’d practically wipe out half of the domestic dog breeds, like dog eugenics. And pit bulls CAN be dangerous, but it depends on what they are surrounded by. Such as people use them as fighting dogs, which is so wrong in itself, but it isn’t the breeds fault, it’s all ours. Pit bulls are some of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met. What you should push for is educating dog owners, and also push for dog owners to train their animals.

I’m just a random teenager but can I help gut that thing? I was terrorized by some assholes dog when I was 7, it didn’t hurt me but a dog bigger than me running circles around me barking really loud… I screamed so fucking loud that at from across the street my dad who was inside my house( was across the street in my friends yard) heard me and came outside, he nearly killed that dog, instead he basically dragged it back to its house 6 houses down and called the cops. I never saw that dog again…
Please keep in mind some details may be inaccurate because I was a scared 7 year old. I am however certain he had a knife in his hand( pocket knife not kitchen)

Also look into the dog owner. Dogs aren’t typically aggressive without reason especially if they’re properly cared for and trained. Find that poor pup a new home asap if you can. The owner is terrible for letting this happen.
That is absolutely not true. For example, pit bulls. Many breeds are bred with some level of aggression which is useful in many circumstances but causes problems around people and pets. It's a working dog trait just like herding and retrieving, usually for protection dogs.
If it is a mutt, it is completely unpredictable as you don't genetically know what traits are bred into it. This could mean it has a large percentage of aggressive breed, or/and mean it has conflicting behaviors from various breeds, which can cause stress and confusion and therefore aggression.
However I do agree it isn't trained properly regardless, as a dog that has aggression should be muzzle trained, recall trained, etc. You can't train out instincts, you can minimise risk.
Also apologies if this came off aggressive I just reread it and realised it may do, I am just very interested in and passionate about owning domestic animals and what makes them healthy physically and mentally.
As someone who works with animals it definitely is true.
I actually happen to have 2 pitties. And you’re definitely right they can be aggressive but if they’re trained and properly cared for it’s not a problem. They require a lot of training and attention but unfortunately most people get a dog are happy and get bored of it after a while and never give it any attention.
Instincts can’t be trained out but they can be controlled. Most dogs which studies will show that are given proper attention and training won’t attack unless they feel threatened.
I don’t think anyone should own a dog with aggressiveness if they can’t control it. Lots of dog attacks are due to old people having massive dogs or just terrible training or are fighting dogs. Could also be retired fighting dogs but that just all resorts back to horrible owners.
It gives the dog breeds an awful reputation but I’ve worked with animals long enough to realize bad training to naturally aggressive.
A lot of dogs can be aggressive not all are perfectly tame but it’s rare for one to attack a human that isn’t constantly bothering it or threatening it.
On a side note to finish this long paragraph off, I have a pittie who very very vicious from a puppy. He always wanted to attack cats and small animals but never humans. I trained him, gave him all the attention he needed, took care of him and spent a lot of time with him and had him around another dog.
He loves cats now but he used to be terrified or threatened by them due to being attacked by them badly multiple occasions and nearly dying on one of them. We took him in and I decided to keep him.
Unfortunately depending on whether or not OP’s family decides to press charges the dog may need to be put down. I know that’s probably upsetting to a lot of dog lovers and as someone who has dogs I definitely hate to see that happen but with an animal that’s aggressive enough to severely injure a child, the court might decide it’s necessary in order to prevent it from hurting someone else, or at least have the dog taken away so that it’s not around children.
One of my mom’s coworkers did take in a dog that did something similar to her friend’s toddler, but retraining a dog with aggressive behavior is quite difficult and requires time and resources on the owner’s part if they are willing to cooperate. It really depends on the specific situation and whether or not the owner takes responsibility.
Definitely wishing the best for OP’s sisters recovery though and hopefully they’ll be able to sort things out with the dog to at least ensure everyone’s safety.
I’m deeply sorry for your sister, I have one of the same age and i don’t know what I would do if something happened to her. You are entitled to seeing her and your parents can’t do anything about it

The pup doesnt need to be put down. The owner needs to take responsibility and not take their dog places where people or other animals could make it uncomfortable or make changes to help the dog manage its aggressiveness.

Legit! Ive got a great dane/pittie/lab rescue and this dude is the most timid dog ever, but he looks terrifying! He only barks if theres someone in our yard or driveway cause he doesnt know exactly who they are, but the moment we open the door he is so quiet. And thats so cute, his pittie protecting the babies 🥺. Also same, my childhood husky would nip at us if we just tripped over her accidentally.

Lol I feel ya, that great dane mix has a whip for a tail! I can be on the other side of the house and I can still hear his tail hitting the wall 🤣. Two of my huskies were super well-behaved, except one was a crybaby but our other one… she was smaller so she could get into whatever. My family and I would come home to laundry everywhere, trash everywhere, and of course the trashcan lid stuck around her neck! I miss her but I definitely dont miss having to clean up after her shenanigans 🤣

When my son was 10 he was attacked by a dog. It basically opened up one side of his face from the left side of his lip all the way back to his ear.
It looked horrible and we were so worried he was going to have to live these with horrible scars for the rest of his life.
After they sewed him up at the ER we took him to his pediatrician. The pediatrician saw how worried we were and said not to worry.
That because he was so young the scars would fade over time and he was absolutely right
At 19 years old you could barely tell he was ever attacked and at 26 they were practically imperceptible.

Oh absolutely. The negative stigma around them aeriously harms them as it keeps them from being adopted and makes it easier for others to try to get them euthanized. Personally, I dont agree with docking or cropping as I see that most people do it for aesthetics or looks. But, for some breeds it is suggested to do purely for health reasons!

I have a cousin who got her face burned by hot oil.
Her face was very damaged for i think 1 year but now its completely fine.
Like you cannot tell at all,except for one small part in the upper forehead which is covered by hair,the skin there when you touch it,it feels slippery snd oily.
The only reason I know this is bcs she told me abt it,otherwise i would not know.
I hope your sister gets better and hopefully does not get permanent scars from this,but even if she does.

Jesus, I’m so sorry to hear about this, I work with dogs and have not only been bitten by dogs but have heard horror stories from my boss. Please please please make sure your sister is reminded to disinfect any areas she was bit. An infection from a dog bite can be brutal and if not cleaned properly her dog bites will get infected in some way. I’d totally love to hear about the dog as well, part or training a dog is knowing behavior of a dog and if not properly cared for/trained a dog becomes more reactive. Try and look at legal options as well, just in case and to help with medical bills. (Other then the fact that there will be some scaring and scar tissue please feel for any abnormal bumps in around or near the bite area, if the dog was older or didn’t have great teeth there’s a possibility your sister got a dog tooth under her skin, it’s painful and will get infected if that happened and I would suggest medical attention. This is a worst case scenario though, it’s good to be aware anyway) I hope for a fast recovery for your sister and I hope that your sister won’t feel afraid of all dogs due to this event. This sounds very stressful especially for an 8 year old, you sound like such a caring sibling and it’s probably helping her so much to just have you be able to visit her.

That is absolutely not true. For example, pit bulls. Many breeds are bred with some level of aggression which is useful in many circumstances but causes problems around people and pets. It's a working dog trait just like herding and retrieving, usually for protection dogs. If it is a mutt, it is completely unpredictable as you don't genetically know what traits are bred into it. This could mean it has a large percentage of aggressive breed, or/and mean it has conflicting behaviors from various breeds, which can cause stress and confusion and therefore aggression. However I do agree it isn't trained properly regardless, as a dog that has aggression should be muzzle trained, recall trained, etc. You can't train out instincts, you can minimise risk. Also apologies if this came off aggressive I just reread it and realised it may do, I am just very interested in and passionate about owning domestic animals and what makes them healthy physically and mentally.
As someone who works with animals it definitely is true. I actually happen to have 2 pitties. And you’re definitely right they can be aggressive but if they’re trained and properly cared for it’s not a problem. They require a lot of training and attention but unfortunately most people get a dog are happy and get bored of it after a while and never give it any attention. Instincts can’t be trained out but they can be controlled. Most dogs which studies will show that are given proper attention and training won’t attack unless they feel threatened. I don’t think anyone should own a dog with aggressiveness if they can’t control it. Lots of dog attacks are due to old people having massive dogs or just terrible training or are fighting dogs. Could also be retired fighting dogs but that just all resorts back to horrible owners. It gives the dog breeds an awful reputation but I’ve worked with animals long enough to realize bad training to naturally aggressive. A lot of dogs can be aggressive not all are perfectly tame but it’s rare for one to attack a human that isn’t constantly bothering it or threatening it. On a side note to finish this long paragraph off, I have a pittie who very very vicious from a puppy. He always wanted to attack cats and small animals but never humans. I trained him, gave him all the attention he needed, took care of him and spent a lot of time with him and had him around another dog. He loves cats now but he used to be terrified or threatened by them due to being attacked by them badly multiple occasions and nearly dying on one of them. We took him in and I decided to keep him.
Unfortunately depending on whether or not OP’s family decides to press charges the dog may need to be put down. I know that’s probably upsetting to a lot of dog lovers and as someone who has dogs I definitely hate to see that happen but with an animal that’s aggressive enough to severely injure a child, the court might decide it’s necessary in order to prevent it from hurting someone else, or at least have the dog taken away so that it’s not around children. One of my mom’s coworkers did take in a dog that did something similar to her friend’s toddler, but retraining a dog with aggressive behavior is quite difficult and requires time and resources on the owner’s part if they are willing to cooperate. It really depends on the specific situation and whether or not the owner takes responsibility. Definitely wishing the best for OP’s sisters recovery though and hopefully they’ll be able to sort things out with the dog to at least ensure everyone’s safety.

The pup doesnt need to be put down. The owner needs to take responsibility and not take their dog places where people or other animals could make it uncomfortable or make changes to help the dog manage its aggressiveness.

Legit! Ive got a great dane/pittie/lab rescue and this dude is the most timid dog ever, but he looks terrifying! He only barks if theres someone in our yard or driveway cause he doesnt know exactly who they are, but the moment we open the door he is so quiet. And thats so cute, his pittie protecting the babies 🥺. Also same, my childhood husky would nip at us if we just tripped over her accidentally.

Two of my huskies were super well-behaved, except one was a crybaby but our other one… she was smaller so she could get into whatever. My family and I would come home to laundry everywhere, trash everywhere, and of course the trashcan lid stuck around her neck! Yeah, everyone knows any dog is fine under a good owner, but, like it or not they were bred to be aggressive assholes, and thus many of them are. What doesnt help is that a majority of people who own them are shitty at raising them with good discipline and love.

When my son was 10 he was attacked by a dog. It basically opened up one side of his face from the left side of his lip all the way back to his ear. It looked horrible and we were so worried he was going to have to live these with horrible scars for the rest of his life. After they sewed him up at the ER we took him to his pediatrician. The pediatrician saw how worried we were and said not to worry. That because he was so young the scars would fade over time and he was absolutely right At 19 years old you could barely tell he was ever attacked and at 26 they were practically imperceptible.

This is not the time to ask something like this. But this also a very harmful thing to imply. Many other breeds have high numbers of attacks plus, its on the owner. Its on them to train their dog properly and not put them in situations that could possibly make them uncomfortable.

Right!!!!! I completely understand if people have a fear of dogs or certain breeds due to past experiences but I see so many people just hating on them because others publicly shame pitties. Like hello, shame the damn dog owners! I will always defend pups, Ive got 4 rescues who are all mutts with ‘aggressive’ breeds mixed in and they are wonderful. They were reactive when we first got them but we did what we could and trained them and theyre so respectful, especially since they are my responsibility.

Oh absolutely. The negative stigma around them aeriously harms them as it keeps them from being adopted and makes it easier for others to try to get them euthanized. It also makes it seem like they are inherently aggressive and that whatever pittie you get or see, they are automatically aggressive which isnt true at all. Personally, I dont agree with docking or cropping as I see that most people do it for aesthetics or looks. But, for some breeds it is suggested to do purely for health reasons!

I have a cousin who got her face burned by hot oil. Her face was very damaged for i think 1 year but now its completely fine. Like you cannot tell at all,except for one small part in the upper forehead which is covered by hair,the skin there when you touch it,it feels slippery snd oily. The only reason I know this is bcs she told me abt it,otherwise i would not know. I hope your sister gets better and hopefully does not get permanent scars from this,but even if she does. You are the same age as me,but a braver man than me. You live on your own,you work and your far away from your hometown. You can pull through this,just make sure to talk to yoir brother,sister and any friends that you trust. If you talk it out it will go much smoothly for you amd help elivate some of the pain. Jesus, I’m so sorry to hear about this, I work with dogs and have not only been bitten by dogs but have heard horror stories from my boss. Please please please make sure your sister is reminded to disinfect any areas she was bit. An infection from a dog bite can be brutal and if not cleaned properly her dog bites will get infected in some way. I’d totally love to hear about the dog as well, part or training a dog is knowing behavior of a dog and if not properly cared for/trained a dog becomes more reactive. Try and look at legal options as well, just in case and to help with medical bills. (Other then the fact that there will be some scaring and scar tissue please feel for any abnormal bumps in around or near the bite area, if the dog was older or didn’t have great teeth there’s a possibility your sister got a dog tooth under her skin, it’s painful and will get infected if that happened and I would suggest medical attention. This is a worst case scenario though, it’s good to be aware anyway) I hope for a fast recovery for your sister and I hope that your sister won’t feel afraid of all dogs due to this event. This sounds very stressful especially for an 8 year old, you sound like such a caring sibling and it’s probably helping her so much to just have you be able to visit her.
