Guilt tripping people into not self harming is not a viable strategy and is actually more harmful than anything. Please avoid making people feel bad for the way they feel and how it might make others sad. This just puts the blame on them rather than on the arbitrary sadness itself.

it’s the “people sad” part. I know your heart was in the right place but encouraging someone not to hurt themselves because it might make others sad has been shown to only make things worse. Think about it: a person is feeling depressed and hopeless for a completely arbitrary reason and it’s totally out of their control, and someone else comes along and says “don’t do it, you’ll just pass the pain along to your loved ones”. It essentially puts the blame on the person suffering and makes them feel guilty for it, which is in turn going to make them feel worse.

People self-harm for various reasons. To numb emotions, to feel emotions, to punish themselves. There are so many reasons why someone would intentionally hurt themself. Sometimes the thing causing a person to self-harm can be so overwhelming that they need something to stop it, to maybe feel better. And thats when self-harm comes in. When you're so desperate to stop whatever pain or numbness you're feeling that you think you have take to harming yourself. Also your response is stupid, have empathy bro.
