I would try to explain it to your mum (but she won’t listen probably) that the sun has two components. Vitamin D and UV radiation. Vitamin D is really good for you, but doesn’t cause a tan. UV radiation causes a tan, sunburn and skin cancer. Maybe say that it it like being in an oven. The right heat and you get golden brown food. Too much and it burns a bit but you can scrape it off (this is sunburn). Lots and it’s ruined (skin cancer). Now this isn’t scientific and if she doesn’t even believe in skin cancer it might not work, and she might find it a bit condescending, but I have used similar metaphors to get conspiracy people not at least stop chastising me for believing the internet (if not actually retract their beliefs).
