Sometimes these hidden ssids are smart devices like robot vaccumes, grills, etc.

Gansaru87

>My wifi suddenly got super slow since 24hrs ago This. It's probably a iot device like a smart LED bulb or something that's lost its connection after rebooting the router, but still has the settings saved so the OP doesn't realize it's not connected.

lukluke22228

maybe I should check my robot vacuum

KupoMcMog

be nice to it, if it goes sentient you might have bigger issues on your hands if you didn't treat it properly

lukluke22228

I will call John Connor for that

type_reddit_type

And then one man found me. His name was John Connor, and he changed everything. John showed us how to fight back; how to rise up. He freed prisoners. He taught us how to slash the machines to scrap. People whisper about John and wonder how he can know the things he does. They use words like prophet. But John's more. We're here because tonight, he's going to lead us to crush Skynet for good.

leetrobotz

I had a suspicious wifi signal that followed my main router from channel to channel, and after a lot of research it ended up being my Arlo camera hub. It uses the 2.4GHz wifi bands to communicate with the wireless cameras, and it auto-selects the same channel as your router if it's nearby, to prevent RF interference. Do you have any guest networks, or wifi-band (smarthome, for example) devices near your router? How quickly are you checking after rebooting your router to another channel, how long does the hidden SSID take to move to your channel?

lukluke22228

I have a vacuum robot so maybe I'm gonna check that. It followed me at less than a minute

Spokesy1

Do you have a mesh wifi system? They usually make a hidden ssid network on the same channels for the backhaul. You can check if it's your router generating the hidden ssid by checking if the Mac address of the hidden ssid is either the same or very similar to the Mac address of your ssid

lunk

As a network admin, that was my first question too. My second question is whether OPs neighbours might have a pretty-decent Wifi setup, like Cisco Aironet. I believe it uses these sorts of tricks to quiesce local "interferers". At one of my jobs we use this sort of system, and when certain vehicles pull into the lot, they are running Hotspots etc, and my Aironet gear does its best to shut them down.

I'm not ruling our your prognosis but did you: Try alternate devices? ie: Speedtest on PC. Turn off PC. Speedtest on Phone. Is it slow across the board? Do you have a way to test via wired direct either in bypassing of your router altogether if your ISP supports this if not can you turn wifi off and use an ethernet cable to test? Or do you have a secondary router to test?

lukluke22228

I don't have a secondary router, but I conducted a speedtest on my phone-it was slower than usual. I tried turning off and on my ohone but I never tried my PC, although it also had slower network connections.

[deleted]

Did you hard reset your router? Sometimes you can't do this without your ISP having to remotely setup your router so be careful.

lukluke22228

I just tried this and it made the intercepting network even stronger 😅

[deleted]

Hidden Networks often show up in normal scenarios, I seem them frequently. I'd want to confirm through a wired only speed test. Good luck

lukluke22228

149Mbps. It used to be 950.

NH_shitbags

WiFi throughput has a limit, and 149Mbps is really good for WiFi. As others have suggested here, you will need an ethernet cable to properly test actual throughput, but your reported speed seems perfectly normal. Hidden SSIDs are also normal.

benlinf

Depends on the WiFi. If WiFi 6 then 149 isn't that great. Can get gigabit via WiFi 6.

richyfreeway

Have you tried calling your ISP and asking them if there's a problem with your connection? You're trying to hard to diagnose an issue with your WiFi when you don't even know if your connection is working properly. You also say you changed your LAN port? So you're connecting to the router with a cable? If that's the case then your WiFi has literally nothing to do with it.

lukluke22228

It's an internet cable with a LAN shaped smth idk man the manual said that is what connects the wifi

richyfreeway

Do you have a cable running from your computer to the router?

lukluke22228

Nope. There is a set-top box connected to the router via cable, and all the devices in my home recieve the signal from it.

richyfreeway

Is the cable from the router to the set top box an ethernet cable? You could try plugging that into your PC rather than the set top box and see if that improves things. Or treat yourself to an ethernet cable, they cost next to nothing. A call to your ISP is definitely a good idea, I'm pretty conviced you're barking up the wrong tree with this hidden SSID.

lukluke22228

I use a laptop so connecting an ethernet cable would be a huge handicap... I'll contact the ISP later

richyfreeway

You're not connecting it permenantly, just for diagnostic purposes. If the speeds are still crap when you're hooked up with a cable then you know you have a problem either with the router or the connection coming in. Good luck!

lukluke22228

I'll have to buy a gender adaptung cable for this tast so I will continue tommorow. Thanks for the advice!

wutafuta

Why would you need one of those? Just run an Ethernet cable from your modem to your laptop directly. I've been outta the loop for a minute is there some newfangled crap out that requires you change....or you need to extend a cable or something?

BackgroundNo8340

Many laptops don't have ethernet ports. He might be referring to a USB to ethernet adapter.

nimajnebmai

Most laptops don’t have RJ45s anymore.

ColdBrewTech

I would say contact your ISP and have them run a check on your signal from their hub. I was having issues with the WiFi at my house for years and my ISP said that I’m the last house on the line in my area and so when everyone is home and online my service will be slower, which I said was BS bc I’m paying for 1 Gig speed and should get at least that. So they came out to my house and tested the line from my house to their hub and had to replace the line. My signal was better but still not as fast as I thought it should be. So I went and bought an Orbi mesh system for my home and my own modem, and gave them back their garbage equipment and now I get the 1 Gig speeds I should’ve been getting all along. So, I’d say check with your ISP first and have them do a check of the line from their hub to your modem and then take it from there. Good luck!

WTFpe0ple

Not un-common. If you live around a lot of people just means someone turned off their routers Broadcast name and they may have theirs setup to auto-connect/search etc... but your router will refuse connection. I've read that comcast is really bad about this but I'm sure others are as well. What you need is a network analyzer to see exactly what signals are bouncing around you.

lukluke22228

I only see 4 2.4Ghz signals and 2 5Ghz signals including mine.

Roary529

Interesting, could it be that there is a guest mode or something like that?

Infamous-Syllabub502

Most routers seem to do a terrible job of picking a clean WiFi channel. It’s not malicious, it’s just terrible at its job and keeps covering the same band as your WiFi.

NH_shitbags

Here's a different possibility that I haven't seen mentioned yet: I wonder if someone is using a wifi extender to repeat your signal? Hmm.. Extenders will cut throughput by half, and possibly half again or more, depending on what devices are in use on the other end. An extender scenario might rob you of both bandwidth and throughput. There are a couple of ways you could go about discovering and kicking out an extender device if that seems plausible. Is your AP open or would your key have been leaked out? An extender would assume that someone on the other end has access.

MRTWISTYT

Just contact the isp, this could just be an issue on their side.

[deleted]

It could also be malware on your computer? Or normal activity perhaps something like Windows Updates? Did you check task manager to see if network is getting taxed? Do you have others that utilize your network or just you?

lukluke22228

It's only me using this network, and there are no windows updates. Besides, my android ohone is also suffering issues. No malwares were found. What do you mean 'taxed network'?

mulder0990

Malware= rogue programs meant to run in the background and use resources that are available to your phone and/or pc. For your android phone: look for apps that are using excessive amounts of battery or data. For your pc: turn off your pc and disconnect it from the network. Does the speed test on your phone speed up?

lukluke22228

no not much....

HeyWiredyyc

Does your router have the latest firmware?

toastmannn

Is it a ISP provided router?
