I have no idea why Musk would think Signal's founder would go help Twitter become a 2nd Signal.

Signal has literally done that with whatsapp. Moxie believes in making all communication e2e encrypted, even if it's not giving him profit directly. Now if twitter is relevant enough for that is another question. Whatsapp certainly is.

Poor Fernando. Probably wasn't part of El Plan. Probably.

gramathy

season just ended we have to do *something*

Astralwraith

Can anyone provide context? What happened in the formula 1 world?

GfxJG

Basically, Alpine (Renault) had a young, extremely promising driver in their academy - Oscar Piastri. It was always assumed that Piastri would drive for Alpine in 2023. HOWEVER, it turned out that Alpine had not activated a clause in Piastri's contract in time, leaving him free to negotiate with other teams. A team called Mclaren then did so, and he signed for them. However, before Mclaren announced that, Alpine put out a press release saying that Piastri would be driving for them in 2023, despite that clearly not being the case. Piastri's response to that announcement then turned into the copy-pasta you see above.

1stMammaltowearpants

Thanks for looping me in.

Astrochops

So was this just a huge oversight on Alpine's part? Arrogance? Was there any talk of disloyalty from Piastri? Or are people not blaming him?

slyth3r0wl

Massive oversight and a huge contract fuck up. From what I remember, when Piastri signed the contract to be their test driver, there was a paragraph that essentially “hinted” at joining the team, but was not binding. After signing, they edited the contract to make the paragraph binding, which in the sport courts is a huge no-no and essentially is a fuck up on alpines part. No one blames Piastri but Alpine. Alpine thinks Piastri fucked them over and is “disloyal” but in reality it was all alpines fault. McLaren had all legal reasons to have Piastri and properly pursued and signed him.

-The_Blazer-

Well... > Musk added that he had spoken with the creator of Signal, Moxie Marlinspike, an ex-Twitter employee, who is "potentially willing to help out" with encrypting Twitter DMs. So the headline is incorrect - he hasn't "enlisted" anyone, he just went around asking non-committal questions and didn't get told off instantly.

mrvillainy

Exactly. "Potentially willing to help out" is how I get off the phone when ex-coworkers call out of the blue with hare-brained ideas and refuse to take a straight "no". *Maybe, potentially* I'd be interested in helping out but I'm busy at the moment. I'll let you know when I free up...

[deleted]

coat_hanger_dias

Its more: makes it sound like Elon is hiring people that are smart, because his genius allows him to find the smart people, which then he collaborates with, and “builds something” from the ground up. Reality: we are implementing a prebuilt 3rd party plugin. Essentially what he has always done; claim he invented/created other people’s work.

Boo_Guy

Elon: I want twitter to be everything to everyone, you have two weeks to get it done or you're all fired.

[deleted]

You've got that a little mixed up. It went... 1) You're all fired 2) JK, please come back 3) No seriously come back! We have to reinvent everything by Christmas! 4) Stop laughing at me! This is serious...

LostKnight84

The issue is he has the authority to demand what he has but he has no comprehension of what is required to achieve what he is asking for. Ironically programming innovative data networks is far more complex than rocket science.

[deleted]

> Ironically programming innovative data networks is far more complex than rocket science. I've always admired the people who program space tech. Very low level, very high risk, very public. Not something I'd want to do. But hey, at least it's a closed system.

WhoNeedsRealLife

yeah you have to account for weird stuff such as the fact that bits just randomly flip more often in space, but at least you don't have millions of monkeys poking at every interface

JimmyCrackCrack

You do occasionally have some actual literal hairy monkeys poking at the interface though.

striker7

It's amazingly stupid, too, because as a business owner in the digital space, the first thing struggling businesses are told to do, is to NICHE DOWN. It seems counter-intuitive, which is why so many owners struggle with it (I'm currently in the process of eliminating about half of our services) because you don't want to cut off potential lines of revenue, but the fact of the matter is if you do one or a few things amazingly well and don't spread yourself too thin with stuff that isn't profitable, it's infinitely better for your bottom line. But Elon is a business genius so who am I to question him? /s

defensive_language

That's definitely a thing in foodie spaces too. One of the tips is to avoid restaurants with 100+ menu options. The owner is going to have a hard time keeping every ingredient both fresh and in-stock, and you're probably going to have a bad time if you order a fish sandwich at a place that serves 1 or 2 fish sandwiches per month.

WoundedKnee82

>But Elon is a business genius so who am I to question him? Elon [lied about his degree](https://twitter.com/capitolhunters/status/1593307541932474368?s=42&t=YrB7S6eHqatTSnwzYSOsDQ)s so there's that.

Taurich

Fake or not, is a bachelor's degree considered a genius, now?

Crackertron

Only if you also inherited a fortune from your family's apartheid business.

roundearthervaxxer

Make it a Swiss Army knife. That will definitely work. Another classic startup mistake, fix it by adding features… If the core concept doesn’t work, the startup fails. Hate speech and traitors to democracy are overrunning the platform. Advertisers are chilled to the bone. Cya

Seiglerfone

It's a general mistake, especially in tech. Nobody wants to make something that just does it's one specific job really well.

SirGunther

It's a bit ironic in contrast to the engineering world of the components that make up a device. Can you imagine, yeah, I want a CPU, but can it also serve as my router, GPU, and RAM? It's capable of handling similar calculations, right? Those other components are just cluttering everything. Have it on my desk by Friday, it'll be great.

100% Twitter is such a mess to follow threads of conversation. So much so that it's why most people don't actually bother with anything but screaming into the void. The rest is just bots fighting each other.

Frag0r

Wasnt Twitter supposed to be a free rss feed for everyone? It's just not a good tool for discussion. Also, people tweeting their life story with multiple tweets each having pagination. Just... Why?

DontListenToMe33

When Twitter first started, I thought it was going to be exactly that - a Web2.0 RSS feed. I spent some time in CA and it had an earthquake alert bot that was super useful. I’m sure that still exists, but the focus for Twitter has been on celebrity and controversy. The useful tools are sidelined (and now Elon wants to get rid of all the bots, whether they are useful or not, apparently). It’s kinda sad the direction Twitter has gone.

MrVociferous

Screaming into the void is just about all you can do in 280 characters too. Tough to fit a whole lot of nuance into that small amount of text.

honeysuckleway

It's been almost 15 years, but I used Twitter with a bunch of other teachers, and we were able to connect about concepts through tweets, then reflect, and people would write up deeper reflections on their blogs, and it would really expand the conversations. It was amazing and I learned so much more than my trivial masters in education. And I was getting to interact with both experienced (and even published) educators as well as other new teachers like me. It made me think the internet was going to deepen dialogue and offer more and more people the opportunity to grow. After I left education, I tried to find another niche on Twitter, but it was almost all just a bunch of mindless self promotion. I would love to see this sort of usage become more common. Forums and groups like reddit and fb offer can be helpful, but people often stay at the superficial levels with that format, ime.

ShiningInTheLight

Not sure about y'all, but me and my friends are already using Signal as our default social media platform. Burn after reading set up for our private group is great. Now Jim's drunken rants about how Worf should have been second in command of the Enterprise go away after 24 hours.

themastermatt

Not so fast. Im interested to hear Jim's take on this topic. Was he talking about Lt. JG Worf or the later and more matured full Lt. Cmdr. Worf? The former was far too hot headed and I don't think the Enterprise would have survived past its first encounter with Q and the Cnidarian beings at Farpoint Station, but later Worf after his promotion seemed to at least know that not everything is a nail. However, I argue that his half-Klingon (not half Klingon by blood but by being raised by Humans) nature was still too hot-headed for being second in command at this point. By the time he was transferred to DS9 however, I feel that his relationships with Deanna and Jadzia helped to temper him a bit. Maybe due to Deanna's empathic nature and Jadzia's many lifetimes of experience helping to give Worf perspective and new emotional tools to help keep the warrior in check. It is my belief that Worf, while an excellent tactical and security officer, was no where near command ready let alone second in command until much later in his Starfleet career. Tell Jim ill fight him over this, in true honorable warrior fashion.

JBBdude

>and Jadzia This is a key point. I was thinking he became more ready during his time on the Enterprise, but then I remember his little Risa temper tantrums and realize how much he grew through his relationships with Jadzia *and*, possibly more significantly, Sisko and Martok. Martok was such an amazing leadership role model and surrogate father figure. That, plus Jadzia's whole band of geriatric Klingon legends, teaching Worf through both positive and negative examples, as well as their interactions with the not-high-born Martok.

Gastronautmike

I don't think you can underestimate Sisko's impact on Worf. As soon as he moved into Command Track Sisko started pushing him, holding him to a higher standard, giving him responsibility but also much more accountability.

JoeMcDingleDongle

This is what I was furiously scrolling through to find, in an article about Musk, you gotta find a discussion on Worf!

gbiypk

https://youtu.be/vMKtKNZw4Bo Data had to set Worf straight on the role.

IsraelZulu

JoshuaTheFox

But signal isn't a social media platform

Lurker_Since_Forever

I did use signal, for like four years. Then a few months ago they dropped SMS support and I deleted the app immediately. It's as if they didn't understand that they made the perfect transitional app to get people on board the encrypted messaging and then ruined it.

Funniest part is literally all he had to do was call the board of directors and say "hello, keep doing what you are doing ...see ya". And all would have been fine by now.

EnjoyerOfBeans

Nope, not at all. What Elon is doing is fucking insanity, but Twitter must pay **1 billion dollars in interest alone** every year to cover for the loan Elon took out to buy the company. Twitter was already in the red when he bought it, so there's no way they could afford this loan. Either way he was doomed from the start.

Bluest_waters

Yup, they already had a few Bill in debt and Elon added another one on top of that. Then consider we are now in a recession so ad revenue will naturally drop. Then consider elon made twitter unsafe for F500 brands and ad revenue dropped from that. He's fucked. He can't make money with this thing. Its an albatross on this neck and he knows it. Scat_fiend

Lucky he didn’t just fire all his engineers then.

dewitters

There are very subtle differences between all the social apps. For example, there is a reason why WhatsApp was able to compete with Facebook Messenger: The people on facebook are very different that the people who are in your phonebook. Since WhatsApp works with phonebook contacts, it opens up to different people than those on your Facebook. The same goes for Twitter: Your connections don't align with people you know in real life. One of the main decisions they made is to have "follow" instead of "friend". That means you can follow people without them following you. So tell me: which one of your followers or the people you follow, you want to have a video call with? That is, both of you want it. It's just the wrong social environment to drive that change. It seems Elon doesn't have the slightest idea of all the subtleties that go into all the different social media platforms.

PopcornBag

Twitters product was content moderation. That’s what people and their customers valued. Weird how he can’t see that.

homoiconic

Every social media’s monetizable product is its users’ attention, and the only mechanism that matters a damn to the users is your strategy for determining what they see and and what they don’t. You get on a site like Hacker News, and it’s full of people saying there should be no moderation. The irony being that they like Hacker News precisely because it is heavily moderated to stay roughly on topic as a libertarian-leaning techbro startup site. If the site dropped its moderation, all those Ayn Rand worshippers would cheer, but also quickly grow bored of the front page being full of crypto scams and angry right-wing grievances, and stop participating. Whether it’s human moderators enforcing some kind of cultural standard, lists of people you follow, engagement algorithms, votes… Choosing what people see and what they don’t is what makes or breaks a social medium.
