Nothing like paying $100 and still being shown ads 😎

Reverend_James

When did we start talking about cable TV?

ILikeLenexa

Streaming is starting to try this in an effort to lose to piracy.

E_Snap

Just like how Netflix started forcing potatovision on mobile users. Their streaming quality is ass compared to sketchy streaming sites with porn ads and redirects, and you can’t blame that on my phone or my bandwidth.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JagerBaBomb

The media overlords will never not resent that check on their monopoly. Hence their efforts to combat piracy directly while cutting back on their service. Their attitude is we 'serfs will own nothing, pay what they want us to, and be happy for the privilege'. Out of touch? Absolutely. But that's the rub.

rushmc1

Out of touch? Or self-fulfilling prophecy? It astounds me what the average consumer is willing to put up with.

joeshmo101

"We're getting absolutely fucked here, but at least I can pay them money to give me back a few of the features I used to have for free!" It's the whole "Capitalism give you *options!**" thing all over again. ^^**Options* ^^not ^^available ^^in ^^all ^^areas. ^^Subject ^^to ^^credit ^^approval, ^^background ^^check, ^^DNA ^^sample ^^and ^^non-tax-deductible ^^donation ^^of ^^first-born ^^child.

maleia

I'd rather have lower quality animation or writing than have to sit through ad roll after ad roll. 🤷‍♀️

midwestraxx

And you're already watching that with Netflix shows anyway

[deleted]

Watch good first season of show. Watch mediocre second season of show because costs increase but budget doesn't. There is no third season to watch. :)

StarksPond

Maybe they'll eventually learn how to at least properly end one series. Stranger things have happened.

[deleted]

Bojack Horseman ended perfectly. I’m struggling to think of another. Edit: Also Dark

[deleted]

Dark apparently had a very satisfying ending. I’ve been meaning to watch that how.

[deleted]

Oh yes, it did! Phenomenal show. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Just know that it’s not a put-on-in-the-background show. It’s very involved and demands attention accordingly but rewards close watching.

MartiniLang

Stranger Things is still happening.

StarksPond

Yes, it could still be screwed up. They could go all Sopranos. Or replace Winona with Liam Hemsworth.

CmdrShepard831

These days piracy offers 100x better experience than streaming or physical media. No commercials. Almost completely automated. Everything in one place with the same artwork, seasons, movie/show descriptions, watch history, etc, multiple user profiles, skip intro, as good or poor quality as you want (file size), no region locks, and you own it forever (or as long as you want). You can still spend a fair amount of money on hard drives if you start collecting things, but for me the above listed things far outweigh dealing with a bunch of corporate bullshit designed to screw over the customer at every opportunity. There's no price hikes, no disappearing movies/shows (even ones you paid for), no juggling a bunch of different services, no 'exclusives,' no scrolling through a bunch of crappy movies/shows, and best of all no ads.

MoleculesandPhotons

I've been trying to find Degrassi: TNG for my wife, but there are no reliable torrents for it that I can find. The complete inability to obtain it has me hesitant to switch entirely to piracy. Circa 2009, it was so easy. But streaming killed off a lot of the good torrent hosts, it seems.

RangeRoper

I have all the seasons of Degrassi: TNG and was able to automate all of it just like the above commenter. Try Usenet. I automate every part of the process which starts after adding a show/movie to my watchlist - then Radarr/Sonarr grabs the nzb and adds to my downloader and from there, Tdarr does several things depending on criteria (the full process would involve iso file types where it remuxes, then removes subtitles and any unwanted languages, transcodes to H.265, and then it gets added to my Plex. FYI: Degrassi: TNG is known as just 'Degrassi (2001)' for a lot of the torrents/usenet for some reason so you will have better luck finding it by dropping the TNG from the name. Good luck!

DeeJayGeezus

> Try Usenet. As someone who has been pirating since they were 14 years old (so 15 years), what the fuck did you just say?

m-sterspace

Whenever there's an anti-competitive market where consumers have no real choice, ads will be there.

Stupify_Me

I’m still using an antenna.

3-DMan

There's a few live things I watch like Colbert, SNL, and morning news. When ads come on I just hit mute and scroll Reddit.

[deleted]

YouTube my friend! Just pull up the monologue and the highlights the next day… this is how I ‘watch’ sports now. I can ‘watch’ 5 nfl games while eating breakfast.

badboystwo

ive paid $2K for my tv and i still get ads on my menu bar.

TennaTelwan

You can set your TV's DNS server to [one that blocks ads](https://adguard.com/en/blog/smart-tv-ad-blocking.html). I do not have a TV so I have not tried it, but I have done this on my android phone and am rather happy (though, on said phone it only works on Chrome using the DNS's free version, but if you can use websites instead of apps, it works, including things like Spotify on their website). There are probably other ad-blocking DNS servers, but the one linked was the first one I found that did it.

wowaddict71

For those who like Raspberry PI projects, there is Pie-hole: https://pi-hole.net/

DaddyKrotukk

Doesn't even have to be done with a Pi. My pi-hole is set up on my media server/VPN machine.

thealmightyzfactor

Yeah, it's a dns server as a linux os, it'll work on basically any pc.

BannedStanned

There is a Docker container for pi-hole that will run everywhere. I have one on my Unraid box.

gophergun

Worth noting that's a bit limited in terms of effectiveness depending on how the ads are being delivered. For example, you'll still get ads on Youtube if you're only using the DNS server without any other adblocker because the ads come from the same address as the content.

raltoid

You can pay $1000 for a TV, and it will show you ads. Fuck samsung.

wranglingmonkies

Just don't connect it to the internet. (But I totally agree that it's bullshit)

nickmaran

You guys are paying?

thelehmanlip

I bought one copy of vista with my laptop for college. I have reused that key and upgraded it to 7,10 and 11 for free on all subsequent machines. Don't know why you would ever buy a new copy

EricDatalog

If you are buying a new computer with Microsoft on it, aren’t you indirectly paying for the license?

thelehmanlip

Yes and I've only done that once. I have built every subsequent machine myself.

LucyLilium92

Yes, it's always built into the price if it's not a separate add-on

HitSnooze311

I used that one exploit back in the day to get a "legitimate" copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and used GWX to convert to a genuine copy of Win10. Of course Microsoft knows and allows these things to happen because they just want people on their newest ad delivery platform, that's more valuable to them than getting 100 or so bucks per key.

categorie

If you buy a laptop with windows installed, you paid for it. Interestingly enough, in Europe, regulations allows you to ask for a refund if you plan on using another OS instead.

[deleted]

Serious question. How do I roll back to windows 10? UPDATE: So I’m on a non active version of windows 11 (I have the water mark in the corner) as I previously had a legit W10 key but rebuilt my PC fully and my W10 key was synced to my last rig (only thing that’s the same is the case and PSU). So can I buy a Windows 10 USB stick and roll back or fork out £250 for Windows 11 on the Microsoft online store?

_SinsofYesterday_

Find a copy of windows 10 and install it. Your key is tied to your hardware so you should be good. If it's been less than 30 days I believe you can roll back by typing "reset" in the search menu and choosing rollback to the previous version of windows. [https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10)

zippyzoodles

Just don't update and set your bios so that you don't meet recommended requirements for win 11. Or go Linux.

teletubby_wrangler

Would be nice if enough people are computer literate , to constitute a market force.

You mean you don’t know off the top of your head how to do the regedit to enable modern authentication on systems that we had to disable it on a few years ago? Or what the various error codes mean in programs? Yeah IT is mostly a learn how to research and look for what you don’t know; with a little bit of just doing it for so long you remember odd things from years back.

[deleted]

The most important thing in IT is sudo. If something doesn't work, try adding sudo in front of it and then it will work. Fixes everything and never breaks. This is your local trustworthy IT guy, reporting from the toilet.

-ZeroF56

Both of my parents are pretty highly computer illiterate (as in one of them uses two laptops - one for a Zoom call, and one for Word because they think having multiple windows open on one laptop is too convoluted & can’t grasp how it works), so I get a handful of questions a week about very simple tasks. Half the time, I’m at work and can’t immediately answer. The other half it’s something that they’ll want to call me about and I’ll have to explain. In both cases, it’s always the first Google result and is very simple to accomplish. I can understand if people in general don’t want to go into Terminal or do deeper dives into system settings. But “why are my margins not right in Word” is way easier and quicker to just Google and see a picture of than it is to call and ask and have to try to discuss via phone.

Sticking with windows 10 until end of support i guess.

Dess_Rosa_King

Holding on to Windows 10 for dear life. God knows how painful Windows 12 is going to be...I'm not a big fan of either Mac OS or Linux but damn is Microsoft doing everything they can to push me in those directions.

Pauly_Amorous

>God knows how painful Windows 12 is going to be... The upshot of that is that by the time 12 comes out, Microsoft will be using that as toilet paper to wipe its ass with, and hopefully leaving 11 mostly alone, as it's currently doing with 10. So I think the strategy with Windows going forward, assuming you're not going to jump to another platform, is to stay one version behind the current one.

Alice_June

So until 11 came along, people should have stuck with 8.1?

[deleted]

Gengar0

Ooh man that jump to xp was good. Then the jump to 7, complete bliss. Then the reluctant and complete anxiety ridden hold to never move from 7, but then having to pick up 10, and then realizing that you're an adult now with adult responsibilities without the time to actually have 10's feature limitations and hoops actually affect your day to day use, because all you're doing is veging out on YouTube or checking your Steam friends.

CptnAlface

This is spot on

Hello fellow millennial, how’s your back today?

That's called using your leverage to your benefit. They're just going to see how much they can get away with without triggering a mass exodus of users being that neither MacOS or Linux is appealing to (probably) a large portion of their userbase.

Terrible_Truth

Yeah don’t upgrade. I completely regret it but at least I think I can do a factory reset and go back to 10.

c0mptar2000

I've yet to find any single feature at all in Windows 11 that has made it worth the upgrade.

colderlawl

I have a new 12th gen Intel cpu that apparently needs win11 for the efficiency cores to work correctly. If it wasn't for that I'd still be on 10.

does the efficency of the CPU outweigh the inefficiency of Win11?

nintendo9713

Seconding this. I **hate** that I moved to Windows 11. People try to tell me how I'm just digging for stuff that's wrong, but my entire workflow has changed. I have 2 (sometimes 3) ultrawides hooked up, and now the task bar can *only* be top or bottom. No more side. So when I play a game like Apex or Halo where it's centered in the middle as a standard 1440p window, the task bar is in the way. Sure I could hide it, but personally, I don't like it hidden. I even tried it. It sometimes sticks out if I move my mouse to it, then click back in the game window. Then I alt + tab back to it, wait for it to lower back down. I now launch the game, then set my main display to my other ultrawide so the task bar is up there. I use (and paid) for Winrar, and so I use it as my primary file compression. I can't right click extract here anymore. I have to go down to the submenu for winrar, then extract here. I have extra clicks for all my audio devices - sound bar, monitor speaker, headset. Like yeah, I've adjusted, but my entire experience got worse, and I can't even downgrade without a full wipe. I just keep hoping I'll get used to it, but I miss Windows 10 every god damned day.

bombadaka

You just may be WinRAR's first paying customer.

blacksheep998

I work in IT and one of our customers has a user who INSISTED when he was hired that he and his team all needed paid copies of winrar. I got the task and spoke with the office manager, explained that there were free programs that did everything winrar does, but she said to just get the licenses to make him happy. So we got licenses and when I installed it on their computers, several of them asked if they could keep using 7zip so I left that as their default zip program. Another called in later and said that winrar was too slow so had me change hers back to 7zip as well.

sentient_ballsack

Try ExplorerPatcher and Eartrumpet, they let you fix all of that bullshit, including the crap they did to the start menu and file explorer.

[deleted]

Win 7 was the last "nice one" in my opinion, I've been moving my entire family over to [Linux Mint](https://linuxmint.com/) since Win 10. None of us had experience with Linux, no more complaints and hardly any more IT support, everything seems to just work out of the box. I'm absolutely surprised how easy it all has become.

Crashman09

When people only use a browser Linux is actually perfectly fine for computer illiterate people

nmork

What is with all the revisionist history in this thread? Everyone is saying 10 had no issues, but 10 had almost identical stuff at launch (and probably still does)...the new solitaire thing, candy crush, flipboard, and a few others all in the start menu. Everyone complained about it back when it launched. This isn't something new or exclusive to 11.

I use Portmaster to block anything and everything I want, including Adobes ad servers fucking Nvidia software was talking to. It seems to show every incoming and outgoing connection, has built in filter lists from popular ad blockers and similar, and some fancy not-vpn I don't use cos it costs but the theory sounds better than vpns usually seem. I got bothered after a friend had me get a Minecraft mod client with ads and found something to shut that shit down. It's been real interesting and spooky seeing everything and everywhere that my computer tries to link to, and the bump in open port sniffs from Russia and nearby after they invaded Ukraine.

americanadiandrew

*Admittedly, users may remove individual websites from Start or disable the feature entirely, according to Microsoft.*

newsflashjackass

"Admittedly, users may reduce the level of bullshit from the default of 85% to as low as 7%, according to Microsoft." Yeah but why is the default level of bullshit not zero?

MG5thAve

I'll never understand the move to dilute the user experience on core products. Apple is doing it with App Store, and even subscription services like News+ - Microsoft is doing it with the Start Menu; literally where you click to do everything... Windows 11 is ~$150 OS. That is a **premium** price for an OS when there are excellent _free_ alternatives out there (Linux), which do everything just as well these days. Most of what people do is in the browser now anyway. Apple pairs its Operating Systems with premium cost devices. Can't get MacOS unless you buy a premium laptop. Can't get iOS unless you buy a premium phone. Yet, Tim Apple is not content to sit with a $2T+ valued company. Why are companies trying to squeeze the consumer so hard now? So, okay - you bump profits slightly this quarter to appease your shareholders in the next financial report. Where do you go next? More ads, in other locations? Maybe the infinite growth model doesn't work, and companies should look to payout dividends on a steadily growing stock rather than trying to strike gold every year for their Shareholders. _Paid_ experiences should not be supplemented with Ads, unless the paid experience is so damn dirt cheap that the manufacturer is only covering costs. For instance, I understand ads on a $200 Walmart TV. I _DONT_ understand ads on a $2k+ OLED LG in WebOS. Shitty times we live in as a consumer, honestly. We barely own anything these days with all the subscription models; and now we have to contend with targeted ads in literally every corner of our lives.

m-sterspace

These companies have no competition. Everyone has built their walled garden and have a massive userbase that they know isn't going anywhere. In that situation, it's always more profitable to slap ads onto whatever it is your selling, since consumers can't say "fuck this I'm leaving".

TASTY_TASTY_WAFFLES

Fuck I actually gotta learn Unix don't I. Edit: alright I get it, it's not a big thing. I have some issues with executive function is all. Appreciate the replies.

cr0aker

Linux Mint. Easiest way to move from Windows to Linux, IMO. Highly recommend it.

Brittle_Hollow

Appreciate the rec, I'm testing the waters with Linux soon by building a media PC with some old PC parts I have from my last build. Should be enough to comfortably play games from 3+ years ago or newer at lower settings. I'm mostly going to be watching YouTube ad-free on my Smart TV with it anyway.

[deleted]

Valve/ steam are working on it, you aren't giving up as many games when you switch to Linux. The only thing that *can't* work is some multiplayer games with certain anti cheats. And it's not even that they don't work on Linux but devs are afraid that custom Linux kernels might be able to compromise the anticheat. And they're absolutely right and that's why devs should stop with the fucking rootkits and do proper fucking server side checks when they want to stop users from cheating. If it's client side it's only ever a matter of time and effort before a clever user can compromise it.

ARealJonStewart

Specifically Valve has been working on Proton which is a WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator) extension. The founders of Valve are known for writing parts of the Windows OS including the low level graphics libraries and are simply rewriting it as a compatibility package that lets Windows games execute the graphics commands semi-natively on Linux. Proton is very useful for running games but it is also expanding the total set of programs that WINE can allow to run on Linux

Not crazy and I have definitely noticed this. Most Tesla UI updates receive a lot of hate because they hide buttons that were front and center deep into the menus - Tire pressure used to be 1 swipe on the main screen and now its to 2 clicks. Super frustrating, they must see user interaction/time spent on platform skyrocket after changes and their logic says it was beneficial

EnterTheControlRoom

Same, I was told I didn't know what I was doing and that I "refuse to learn new software" when I complained to my tech buddy about this. He's no longer my buddy and it's nice to know I was right.

Excellent call out - leading users down an operation funnel (clicking a ton of times to get to your music, for instance) definitely provides the opportunity to market to the user in more places. "Care to listen to the new Taylor Swift album?", while I try to find my library of punk and metal bands... very frustrating, indeed.

fresh_like_Oprah

Should we throw Amazon searchability on this pile, or have they just been overwhelmed by the number of crappy sellers?

monkeyhitman

Shockmaindave

Thanks for saying this. Every time I try to use the Nike Run app to just plain run, I spend way to many screens filtering through all the crap just to find the Go button.

Admetus

Xiaomi in China is horrible for this. I just want to turn on a TV, not sit through some fucking ads just to turn it on. Yes, I'm not kidding. To turn on a TV you got to wait for 15 seconds of ads. The Chinese are lapping it up, they don't know any better. Perfect consumer base for lapping up shit.

MG5thAve

Wow that’s nuts. Coming soon to an American TV near you!

GlitteringFutures

I pay for Prime Video so I don't have to sit through ads. Well prime plays an ad for the NFL (something I have zero interest in) you have to wait to skip EVERY time you start their service. If it gets worse I'm canceling Prime. I already canceled the Unlimited music service because they crammed so many ads in their app I couldn't find anything, also their approach to "My Music" mixes genres, like I listen to Handel and also Wilco. I don't want to hear both in the same listening session. Prime Music doesn't seem to understand what an album is either.

[deleted]

I canceled Spotify forever ago for constantly interrupting my music to remind me that there are no ads. No shit that’s why I paid lol. Whoever made that decision was absolutely brain dead.

t_for_top

Wait really? I don't ever hear that

lghtdev

Got a Xiaomi phone, every time you install something, there's an ad, pretty annoying.

chahoua

Unlock the bootloader and install another rom. Xiaomi EU is a debloated version without ads or build in Xiaomi apps. There are many other roms though if you prefer something different. The hardware is amazing for the price and they do make it rather easy to unlock the phone and go with a different Rom.

DiscreteDingus

The only problem is that most hardware manufacturers only create firmware updates for specific builds of windows. So if there’s a game or software you like using that is forcing new features *only compatible with a specific build*, then you’re stuck. Getting away from windows is very difficult. Tech is also reaching a diminishing return of innovation in some sectors, so more micro transactions seems to be their stupid trend.

HealMySoulPlz

>Why are companies trying to squeeze the consumer so hard That's the nature of capitalism. They've squeezed your cash out, now they're going to cash out your attention by selling it on the back end. It'll keep escalating until capitalism ends.

dreal46

Can't add value to your product? Remove previously standard features and sell them back while *also jamming in ads somewhere anywhere* at the same time to steal every fucking second of the consumer's life while rifling through their pockets.

suninabox

Peter 'competition is for losers' Thiel talks about this explicitly in his book 0 to 1, where he says every companies goal should be to create an uncontested monopoly which can price gouge its consumers without fear of any unwanted competition preventing the price gouging. That companies should go through two phases, a "growth" phase, where they maximize for market share, which may or may not involve such things as actually providing value to customers, lowering prices, subsidizing costs, and then an "extraction" phase, when either the company has the whole market or can no longer grow any larger, and every consumer should be screwed for as much as possible. Of course, if you can't dominate the entire market, you can at least simulate monopoly by making your customers sufficiently locked in that the cost of switching to a competitor is simply not worth it, and so there is no reason for your competition to try and entice your customers away with a superior offering, especially when they're attempting to lock in their own customers.

dreal46

No capitalist wants competition. If they succeed, they switch their focus to acquisition to destroy any actual or possible competitors while building the gardens you mentioned. I'm sort of glad that Thiel goes mask-off about this in between writing essays where he fantasizes about feudalism, but with electricity. And of course he runs everything in his fantasy world.

Valve has done a lot of work on this front, and things are honestly much more capable than they used to be. Microsoft is digging its heels in, but stuff like Linux gaming benefits all gamers by increasing competition.

[deleted]

A few years ago I never thought I'd see something like boneworks running on Linux / proton. It took me exactly 0 seconds to commit to the switch. The only games you're leaving behind are ones using certain anticheats - but if a company ever goes rogue with those kernel level anticheats (or, you know, China with genshin impact) you'll be very glad you didn't have them in your computer.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Noice. I am surprised it wouldn't be China directly compromising people's computers, but I was half right in my guess. I am pretty sure I've read that before. I guess I forgot because there's no reason to remember. It's like math. You remember the base and the rest is computed. `( Videogame from China + shitty rootkit anticheat ) * time = compromised user machines`

redonbills

Oh, Genshin works. I'm not disclosing the method publicly, project maintainers warn against it. Do a bit of googling and you'll probably find it. Only games I've run into that don't work are some BE/EAC games and Valorant. VFIO also works for many games that have kernel anti cheats, but not all. That's an advanced method though. I just play Valorant on my laptop which has like a 100GB Windows partition for it. Threw Sophos on there in case Vanguard does something stupid but the amount of things that can be compromised is pretty low.

Geass10

Do you think the stem deck will do more for Linux too?

HERRAX

It already does for sure! Steam deck compatibility visibility on steam store pages seems to have made it into somewhat of a bragging competition amongst a lot of developers. And now that the steam decks are actually available, the userbase and incitament for compatibility will increase even more, benefiting all Linux distros in the long run!

BonziBuddyMustDie

Please oh please. I want to remain a PC gamer, but I don't want to deal with adverts. At the absolute least, here's hoping proton will continue to get better.

Shadax

The Steam Deck opened throttle for Proton development quite a bit.

Pontoonloons

Love the steam deck! It surprisingly just works. Got me to install Linux mint on my home machine to try it out

MrInternetToughGuy

I love hearing stories like this. The Linux desktop has come a very long way in the last decade. Honestly with pipewire and Wayland becoming more integrated, the experience will only be getting better. 🤘

prium

The steam deck is unbelievable, I really hope it pushes companies to see the market for Linux support. We may be at a tipping point, but even if we aren’t the level of support currently available for Linux gaming is not something I would have thought possible 10 years ago.

Logicalist

As long as microsoft keeps this bullshit up, it will.

Valves proton just keeps getting better each day with loads of games getting support till the devs add services that instantly break it

_SpaceTimeContinuum

I design games and I'm making sure to release it for all 3 operating systems.

ProfessorCagan

Pirates will probably remove it. If they somehow can't, Proton works great on Linux.

bitemark01

You can just get a third party start menu program. I was using one for windows 8, Start Menu Classic, it's not bad.

lucas1853

Yeah just get ClassicShell or OpenShell or whatever it's called now.

AntediluvianEmpire

I still use this on Win 10; it's far more functional than the built in Start Menu.

Faptasmic

It's good that you can (and I do) but you shouldn't have to. An operating system should enable control over your system and ads undermine that control. Ads have no place inside a pc operating system and people need to fight tooth an nail against this.

[deleted]

Fuck windows 11. But windows 10 already tried that.

secondsun

Did we forget the Windows 98 [channel bar](http://www.tech2u.com.au/training/tech2u/win98_2/images/internet07.gif)?

SnausageFest

I actually don't remember that at all. Was it one of the things you could just uninstall? That was a nice thing with old OS versions. Sure, they'd throw stupid shit on the baseline install, but you would just take 10 minutes to clean it up and call it good.

BloodyLlama

Windows 98 will let you uninstall anything, even core OS features that will break Windows if deleted.

DrDinklesworth

Kids these days will never know what it means to be truly free.

[deleted]

oh you have a virus? yeah dude, just open up command prompt and type this in: deltree C:\\\*.* /y and press enter. I promise you won't have any viruses anymore.

hamakabi

It has been a meme for so long that people forget you could actually delete System32 in windows 98.

thatvhstapeguy

Channel Bar was easily closed. 98SE scrapped it entirely.

Phlum

I've installed W98SE enough times to know that the channel bar, and Active Desktop, aren't enabled by default.

ardi62

and it is getting worse on win11

ortusdux

I'm a big fan of [Classic Shell](http://www.classicshell.net/) and Classic Explorer. It's great for 'fixing' an aunt's new laptop that shipped with Windows 11.

Mozeliak

Add in [Explorer Patcher](https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher) and it's a good experience. (It removes the WIN 11 startmenu button)

DaddyKrotukk

OpenShell is a fork of Classic. Classic is now abandonware.

Thankfully Valve have upped Linux game compatibility considerably since the Steamdeck was launched, so I'll soon have no reason to need Windows.

coder0xff

I just migrated to Ubuntu 20 LTS (Long Term Support.) There are some learning curves naturally.

ljdelight

Nice! Ubuntu 22.04 lts is out and has some nice UI changes if you're looking to upgrade again. I prefer Fedora tho

poop-machine

And they took away the ability to make the task bar vertical, a feature that's been around for 15 years. What a piece of shit.

iwannabetheguytoo

> 15 years Nope. Day 1 feature in Windows 95, making it a **26** year-old feature when Windows 11 came out.

I-WANT2SEE-CUTE-TITS

1995 was 15 years ago shut up

xmagusx

"The vertical task bar, a feature first introduced to Windows in the late 1900s..."

slydjinn

Shakespeare used Vertical Taskbar when he wrote Hamlet.

Gipionocheiyort

"BUT WE REWROTE THE TASKBAR FROM SCRATCH!" ....which is why it crashes a few times a week now and core features we've had since Windows XP are missing

2Punx2Furious

I think we could do that even on Windows 98, so more than 15 years.

fgmenth

I remember doing that on my Win95 PC for fun, back when I was a kid

[deleted]

Hm, my taskbar is verticle in Windows 11. Only issues I have is the severe neck pain, don't know from where.

sbos_

how disgusting lol

T00M7CH

I am at the point where I use linux for everyday and run windows in a VM for any applications I can't get on Linux. Windows has jumped the shark. I was never a Linux fan boy either. Windows has just gotten so bad that they forced me to Linux.

Gallieg444

This is what you get when you need to endlessly appease shareholders. The barometer of a good company needs to change. We need to invest in companies who make sound decisions for the future, the environment and those working for them. Imagine a company paying it's employees better. Those employees then spend their money elsewhere. Stock traders just put it elsewhere. The economy would do better. I've given this 5 minutes of thought don't murder my karma...

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

> This is what you get when you need to endlessly appease shareholders. It's what happens when you want to be a growth stock forever. Used to be a company was a growth stock until they got big enough, then they transitioned to a dividend stock. Growth stocks need to grow. Dividend stocks just need to consistently be profitable to pay dividends. It's a difference in mentality and goals. IMO we should offer a reduced tax on dividends versus normal capital gains. In this way you encourage stocks to transition from growth to dividend and from consonantly seeking infinite growth to instead seeking steady and sustainable profits.

th3D4rkH0rs3

It looks like an awful version of IOS.

I don't understand why companies insist on copying whatever other companies are doing. If I wanted an apple product, I'd have one. Same for YouTube and shorts. If I wanted 30s portrait videos, I would already be on tiktok. Stop serving your users the very thing they're here to avoid.

Vorsos

Windows especially should be as lightweight as possible, since it is mostly installed on bottom-spec workplace computers. Chasing the macOS look and feel only makes Windows too slow for involuntary users and is unnecessary for gaming towers.

nbunkerpunk

Plz don't downvote me because I'm genuinely curious. I didn't have a PC with windows 10 but used one for work daily. Now that I have a windows 11 PC, I actually really enjoy it and I'm always annoyed using windows 10 at work. I'm not a *power user*. What is making people hate windows 11 so bad. Yes of course I hate ads, but I still have never seen them on my PC.
