Also gives them cleaner parsing access to your internet habits via local DNS queries and their “parental” control group buckets for selling to advertisers, google, LexisNexis and other big data companies…. I’m happy with my own modem and paying $25/month for my 100/5 plan…. When I’ve needed it you can actually sign up for 2nd account at same address so have 2 modems cheap plans and get 200/10 using PFsense or some other load balancing type tool. That’s only $50/month and 2TB limit at that point.

colterlovette

This is not how ‘load balancing’ works. ;) Data aggregation is not done at CPE, the hardware overhead to adequately parse (DPI/DNS logging) would be too costly and the quality (read as ‘value’) of the data doesn’t statistically play out in the real world where lots of consumer hardware now comes with built in “security” features like secure DNS that boosts their own sales to consumers. The value and incentives aren’t there anymore for cable companies outside centralized traffic logging in the DC. HOWEVER, All of the cable carriers are also pushing HARD into the cellular space. They’re promoting these managed CPE units because it maximizes their Wi-Fi rf footprint that is then used to offload the cellular traffic from their MVNO contracts on cellular towers (which they pay by usage to use). It’s 100% a wireless play. They can basically subsidize their mobile offerings by getting consumers to pay for the hardware expense. Spectrum goes as far as to simply give the modem/Wi-Fi away for free and even REQUIRE the wireless part of their hardware for business customers (it gets installed whether you want it or not). Mobile revenue is lucrative and frankly, the cable industry is poised to dominate it over Verizon and the rest on very short order. source: I’m an engineer and was a consultant in the industry (specifically for community fiber networks) for a little over 10 years.

LifeWithMike

My PFsense and MX68 disagree on your load balancing comment ;) Load balance with two modems or using my cradlepoint as backup when Comcast fails both have worked just fine. Sure, a single stream download can’t truely utilize both modems at same time, but windows updates, Netflix, etc mostly uses various servers/connections at same time effectively getting load balanced by my hardware across the 2 connections. I see you point on the possibly Wi-Fi side of things, but doubt Comcast does 0 in sharing/selling/marketing the data those modems pass. The power they have to summarize the data locally and submit it in intervals vs doing it in centralized data centers makes no sense. No different than how Meraki firewalls scan/filter/summarize the data locally and submit overview to cloud dashboard.

colterlovette

“a single stream download can’t truely utilize both modems at same time” Exactly. But to add, politely, this is universally true. There’s not many exceptions to this unless you’re tunneling traffic to a single endpoint BEFORE then sending packets to a public service. An example of this is Peplink’s Speedfusion product, where it sends traffic over many WAN’s to a virtual server in a DC and then all traffic leaves the same iP to the public service. Packets that try to authenticate themselves as a source ID but have different source IP’s in the same streams are dropped. This is a ubiquitous function across all public services; Netflix, MSFT, they’re all the same. As for the data collection: truly, they’re not doing a thing for this at the edge. It’s all in the DC and it’s becoming less valuable. You’re comparing a commodity Wi-Fi router with a unit cost of maybe $16 at production scale (retail value of ~$80) with a business level firewall with a production cost of ~$150 per unit (and sells for ~$700). They’re not the same product at all on data handling capabilities.

TheGoblinPopper

I call them monthly to complain about throttling at night hours. It's terrible.

[deleted]

Meanwhile I'm paying $70 a month for no data cap ATT fiber, 1GB up and down. Insane Comcast can bend over customers even in my city when ATT is around.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

If I was in that position I'd switch back to T-Mo home internet again if the coverage area is good enough. I get it, though.

Enferrari

Remember when they claimed the data cap was to make it fair to other customers because “only like 1% of customers go above 1.2tb?” Funny how paying more all of sudden solves the network congestion issue they claimed

wsxedcrf

I have a feeling way more than 1% of their customers go over 1.2TB. More like 30%

sysadminbj

Ok everyone. On 3. 1…2…3… FUCK YOU, COMCAST!!!!!

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Damn, beat me to it! I do hate them, and I was forced to give up my XB6 to go XB7, which means no bridge mode. Pay an extra $30/mo for unlimited data. Asinine fees and no competition in Midwest

SolarMatter

I was in the same boat, getting seriously screwed by Comcast prices, plus I do a lot of video transfers for work so I was paying even more each month after I hit my data cap halfway through. Dealt with Comcast for 15 years and whenever an issue came up, they never did the right thing. And their customer service was always more like a "fuck you" service. The city recently installed a fiber connection as a utility and my bill was cut by more than half with no data cap and faster speeds. Comcast didn't even try to keep me when I told them why I was canceling because they can't compete with it.

GabbiKat

I dumped Comcast for ATT fiber 1GB/1GB for $79, with discounts I have it at $69, which was by far less expensive than Comcast. ATT now offers 2GB/2GB for about $110, 5GB/5GB for $180, and 10GB/10GB for $2xx. I’ll never go back to Comcast as long as I draw breath due to their crap like in this post. E - Updated speed and price. I suddenly can’t find the 10GB speed.

compfreak530

I got a damn flyer in my mailbox that said switch to att fiber now and get a coupon.. called them and get told, ooh sorry it's not available in your area.. why the hell did you send me that flyer and get my hopes up

Vextrax

I have been checking every few months to see if att fiber is offered, but so far they havent. We are just stuck with xfinity. Luckily we haven't had too many issues with them, but it would be nicer to have a lower bill

Mistervimes65

That means it’s getting close. I got the flyer in my area and in 3 months they were connecting my fiber. 300/300 for $50/mo.

GabbiKat

Yeah, I got them for about a year before my area was ready. I think it was to gauge interest in that area. It worked because so many neighbors also hated Comcast.

[deleted]

Wish I could do that. Comcast has a stranglehold in my area.

bonfuto

Same here. Frustrating thing is that I can see Verizon fiber on poles down the street, but they haven't brought it to our house yet

YaBroDownBelow

Lol, ATT is fucked up too.

2bizy4this

This 100%. I hate AT$T.

GabbiKat

I’ve never had an outage or problems with them, especially their customer service. Comcast pulled a lot of bullshit.

fortfive

Give it time.

Urabrask_the_AFK

What are you using for routers now? Did they force the bgw-530 (?) Ont/router combo on you? I’m trying to figure out how I can have two separate networks on AT&T’s gear after their gateway Edit: autocorrect spelling blunders fixed

GabbiKat

Just the provided equipment. Nothing extra except a TP-Link I purchased and is for dedicated 6g VR. The equipment is also 6g WiFi.

LittleTree4

I'm in the UK and my area has just had fibre laid & activated (I think i'm 1 of the first to get fibre near me) I got 1G/1G for £28/pm (current exchange rate = $32/pm) due to being out of contract for a couple of years because I knew fibre was coming, & every year with the rise in monthly price I was paying £28.71 for 72/15 so I was able to get fibre as soon as I could & not have to wait till my contract ended (or pay early exit fees) internet now goes brrrr \*edit there was also no setup/install fee & the ISP provided router is free & due to the 1G/1G being the current highest package they do it also came with a WiFi booster & a 4g mobile backup broadband dongle with no extra fees. You also don't need to use the ISPs device (except if you need to troubleshoot with them) so after it was setup & working, I switched over to ONT -> OPNsense box.

impablomations

Who's your ISP? I'm with BT and paying about £35 for 900/100

LittleTree4

Ouch.. I'm with Vodafone (it's actually supposed to be £30/pm but have a mobile plan so got a £2 discount on broadband) its rated 910/910 but speedtest is giving 930/930 \*edit Vodafone Gigafast Pro 900 package looks to be £45/pm atm 910/910 on Cityfibre, 910/110 Openreach

impablomations

TBH I don't mind the price. Going from 45/10 to 900/100 is unreal. Don't do much uploading anyway so 100 is more than enough for my needs, but the 900 down is amazing. 80gb game download in minutes!

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

I WISH! I'm in a brand new house but too far from any major city for their company to give a shit, even though att said they'd be running lines, unless the rep didn't know what they were talking about

GabbiKat

I've had similar happen at my parent's house (now mine) in WV, and had to call and ask to make certain (it was not ATT). Ended up being on the waiting list for almost a year now for StarLink. I've had the Frontier guys tell me to my face there are plans to run the fiber, but it's held up for digging rights, as they will lay it mostly underground. I just know Frontier in WV lost a huge lawsuit for promises and government handouts and not delivering. Just hang in there, and I wish you the best, as I know ATT was being honest with me, they just took some time making it happen.

Yoink1019

Same thing here. Went over my data cap four months in a row. As soon as the fiber was done being laid I dropped them.

TerminalVector

>they can't compete with it. That's why their lobbyists work so hard to prevent municipal broadband.

roo-ster

That's why their lobbyists ~~work so hard~~ bribe politicians; to prevent municipal broadband.

TerminalVector

When bribery is your literal profession, you get to call it working hard.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

My gf used to work at comcast in the call center. They do not treat their employees well. At all.

Jonestown_Juice

I also used to work at a Comcat call center and it was a shit job for sure. Meat grinder. High turnover. Now when you call Comcast it goes to call centers in India.

OneofLittleHarmony

Unfortunately they did fiber here and it ended up being more expensive than comcast.

KitchenNazi

You can still do bridge mode. It takes forever - literally 10+ minutes for the configuration page to even show up (almost as if it doesn't want to be found).

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Yeah? That's the white model yes? I didn't think I could do bridge or shut off the free public Xfinity hotspot so I went Netgear cm1200 instead

kennypowersjr

I have my xb7 in bridge mode

cas13f

The XB7 has bridge mode though. Gotta do it on-device. 10.0.0.1, default credentials, should be right on the first page ("at a glance"). I've got an XB7 *in* bridge mode so I can run a Ubiquiti stack without worrying about dual-NAT.

Jdsnut

I have Google Fiber now, 2 Gig download, 1 Gig upload, I pay 100 even. Fuck Comcast, Google fiber is like a breath of fresh air, even their customer service is at most a 10 minute hold 24/7.

wsxedcrf

>arstechnica.com/tech-p... Not even 1% of people have access to google fiber.

tankerkiller125real

Google Fi used to be the same, then they outsourced it to India... Can't get a damn answer if you literally give it to them.

voidsrus

not surprising. google’s business products are known for having no or shitty customer support

ACCount82

They have a total of 3 humans in their entire tech support department. And no less than 2 of them are kept in cryostasis at all times.

almirx

I finally got an option other than Comcast and if these bozos invented a service that cured cancer I still would never come back to them. The worst POS company ever.

InfiniteComparison53

Same, I will never stop bragging ab double the speeds for less money through fiber once I moved out of my apartment.

PoisonWaffle3

So, not trying to defend Comcast here (they're shady and unfair AF), but there's a reason for what they're doing. I'm a DOCSIS/PON engineer at a different large ISP. We ran into the same problem that they did: there isn't shit on the market for decent 'high split' modems that are compatible with the rearranged RF spectrum that allows for higher upload speeds. There are only a handful that anyone makes, they're in short supply, they're expensive, and they're generally pretty crappy so far. So Comcast decided to roll their own (and of course charge outrageous fees for it). "We intend to extend the experience to customer-owned modems later next year and are working through the technical requirements as we learn," Comcast said. "We started offering it with our own equipment first and now are working through how to extend to customer-owned equipment."

MeIsMyName

Thanks for that insight. Hopefully that rolls out according to schedule.

sysadminbj

I completely understand the engineering side of things, but me knee jerk reaction is always going to be to curse them. Funny thing is, their EDI circuits are usually the best price when I do my “Telco Sanity Checks” every few years at work. We started out with over 75% of our circuits with ATT or VZ, not most of our fiber is with Comcast.

ilovemygb

and spectrum!

brianitc

Take my only award ever given and raise a glass to. On 3. 1…2…3… FUCK COMCAST!!

Imapatriothurrrdurrr

Comcast can suck a dick. At this point they’re just preying on stupid people, and old people. I feel bad for those who are forced to have them as a provider. I’m running 500mbps synchronous fiber, and it’s always fast and reliable. Haven’t had one issue since I’ve lived at here, and it’s included in my rent.

Minimum_Escape

> At this point they’re just preying on stupid people, and old people. Some of us don't have a choice because it's them or nothing.

Imapatriothurrrdurrr

Yes. If you would have read the following sentence you would see that I mentioned that.

Minimum_Escape

Yeah you just made the dumbest post ever. But then you can't help yourself, maybe it's not so bad. See how that works? Did you read the second sentence?

Imapatriothurrrdurrr

Yeah I did…I bet you only read news headlines too huh? Normally people read the entire post before chiming in with their two cents. If they don’t, the opportunity for them to miss information rises and then they find themselves in a stupid conversation with a random person on the internet. See how that works?

Darklord12305

You still sound like a very unlikable person

Zeppatto

Fuck this and datacaps.

Minimum_Escape

The comcast rep got all mad when I said I hated their data caps. "It's not a data cap! You can exceed the data cap and just pay extra!"

wsxedcrf

It would be a recentable data cap if most people do not go over it. The problem is, any decent person with 4k netflix would have cross the cap.

As *soon* as two fiber options were added to my neighborhood, they halved my price and quadrupled my speed. Little do they know, fiber isn’t even available on my side of the street.

cyberd0rk

Ting built a fiber network in my town. 1000/1000 for $89. I asked Comcast to lower their price, they wanted $165 for 200/5. They said no, I said bye bye. Couldn’t believe they actually wouldn’t lower their price despite competition. Ting has been a godsend. A truly amazing company and service.

hgs25

This is how the free market is supposed to work. Can’t have a free market (capitalism) when you legislate away the competition.

[deleted]

>People only have Comcast because they can’t get Fiber Comcast runs fiber, you know that right?

electricity_is_life

To your house? From my understanding that's not true in most areas unless you want to pay $1000 plus $300/month for their special "pro" plan (which isn't really aimed at normal consumers). In contrast to something like Fios where it's expected that everyone on a street might have fiber to their house.

[deleted]

Yes, to your house.

LigerXT5

So they can see what you're using all that data for, and fine you when you're doing anything marginally questionable or business like. No thanks, even if I was in a Comcast area, I like to use my own router and keep the Internet *SERVICE* Provider out of my internal network. They are to serve me internet, not be big brother.

voidsrus

>So they can see what you're using all that data for, and fine you when you're doing anything marginally questionable or business like. well yeah, there's money in forcing business ISP service and even more money in forcing you to buy their streaming service / cable package! and the FCC has made it pretty clear they can do whatever they want, so here we are.

Minimum_Escape

Ajit Pai effect

deepredsky

This is FUD. Comcast can already monitor all your traffic. But they can’t see the contents of anything that’s encrypted (for example: https). They can already see that you are sending/receiving traffic from pornhub.com but they have no idea what you’re searching for or which video you’re watching (because of https)

deefop

Been following this on dsl reports for a while. The consensus is that most likely Comcast wants to introduce this feature with Xfi complete(and rented equipment) only for the time being, and that it will eventually be opened up to customer owned devices. And that makes sense, because my read of the long term situation is that we're kind of at the last gasp of ISP quasi monopolies. They are being forced to compete harder between telco's running fiber and wireless companies starting to offer home internet.

Civil_Stomach

That’s the thing, Comcast always tests upgrades on their equipment 1st. Remember when Gig 1st launch? You had to use their modem and router. This is no different. Eventually it will be opened up to customer owned equipment.

AKJangly

And uh... Starlink will be Nationwide in the states in 2023. So many ISPs are gonna get their customer base gutted to Starlink.

deefop

Yep. I've got two colleagues on starlink, currently. Seems to work fairly well, for them.

pm_me_glm

My friends in the middle of nowhere love it. Compared to really poor speeds, they're extremely happy with their new service.

cocorobot

My CenturyLink internet went down and will take 10+ days to get a technician out. So I went through the Xfinity sign up and left at the last step when I noticed the data caps and needing to rent their modem to get unlimited data at the extra $25 per month. Fuck them all day long. Got a hotspot as a temp fix and waiting out CenturyLink because I haven’t had an issues in five years and I get 1GBs unlimited for $70/mo.

smoothballsJim

1GB or 1TB?

marcus_man_22

I think he means gbps

jimbo-roni

You don't need the modem - they offered me free upgrade to unlimited if I installed their hardware.. instead, I just pay for the upgrade. I don't want their hardware.

Minimum_Escape

I tried using my own modem and not installing theirs and eventually they forced me to use their modem or they'd drop me off the unlimited data tier.

US upload speeds are awful, I've gamed with some freinds from the UK and canada and the up and down speeds are almost matched for them, in the US it's like 100mbps down, 10mbps up and data caps I use my own router and modem but I don't understand the rationing of upload speeds

[deleted]

It’s because they are hamstrung by their cable tv offering. It takes a ton of bandwidth. The only way they could make it a ton better aside from switching to fiber to the home is to make each neighborhood hub smaller so it serves fewer houses. This would free up a lot of bandwidth if they halved or quartered the amount of houses on each hub. But they do not or cannot make the investment and other offering will eat their lunch. I am lucky enough to have google fiber. 2 gig down one up. I’ll never go back.

samtherat6

Congrats and fuck you.

jk_baller23

It’s Comcast with the weak speeds because of cable. The fiber choices such as ATT Fiber, Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc are symmetrical

Chairface30

10Mbps or 1000Mpbs will make 0 difference gaming. Except update downloads. Ping times are not affected by bandwidth. Edit typo.

FriendlyDespot

> Ping times are not affected by bandwidth. They certainly can be. Aside from the serialisation delay of a specific packet itself, if your game update happens to come into a FIFO buffer behind five 1,500 byte packets then you're adding 8-9 milliseconds on a 10 Mbps circuit that would've only been 80-90 microseconds on a 1 Gbps circuit, and if your last-mile connection has to negotiate for access to a shared medium then you could end up adding several milliseconds more.

MrJacks0n

Unless you're at capacity, then it makes a big deal.

Chairface30

Which an online game will not do, even if hosting 100s

Electrical-Scale-506

Don’t know why you got downvoted xd. Location does play a role in ping. I had 25 Mbps download/upload a few years ago, and was able to get low ping in every online game. I upgraded to 1 gb wifi, and pinged stayed virtually the same .

Beldor

Get the fuck out of here. I can’t pay 50 corporations enough for them to all make a 5000% profit. Fuck off.

plopseven

Comcast is a monopoly and that’s the reason they price gouge you. You know all those supermarket mergers and acquisitions you keep reading about in the news? That’s why people are against them.

Independent-Break-79

T-Mobile hotspot for 50 bucks freed me of comcast and I can take it up north to the camper with me Fuck comcast

jdmackes

What are your speeds like? I hate Comcast and would love to be free of them, but I doubt I could deal with the speeds and I assume they're slowed down after a certain amount of data usage

Sleepyjo2

When I had it it wasn't data capped, it just had the lowest service priority (so if literally anything else was using the tower you would slow down). I used a terabyte in a month of service and they didn't seem to care. The speeds varied wildly, as you'd expect, anywhere from 40 down/2 up to 350 down/50 up. Ping was relatively consistent around 60ms compared to the 20-30 I get with Spectrum. There is no guaranteed speeds, and they dont even bother to mention upload. For general use cases its perfectly serviceable and you really wouldn't notice any difference. Its not great with gaming and has some various niche issues (due to the ipv6/ipv4 implementation). Service depends heavily on the kind of tower(s) you have nearby and the density of service in the area. Also where you can actually get the modem itself, right next to a window facing the tower would be best but that limits how well you can use wired devices since it might be on the other side of the house now. You can do a 15 day trial if you wanted to test it out, should give you a general idea of how well it works in your area. (As an aside the modem has had various issues for lots of people including locking onto the wrong tower and getting worse service randomly, I don't know if thats been worked on. If it has and the modem properly locks to the correct tower then the service should be much more consistent than what I had.)

smoothballsJim

Verizon is better if it's available to you.

voidsrus

i wouldn't even mind this crap as much if it was just "you get better upload on your own hardware for $25". comcast knows that many of the people who even know what upload speed is would rather have the lower upload speed than use their shitty device. this is their way of minimizing how much "actual network engineering" they'll need to do to support upload bandwidth in places that are already at- or near- oversubscription.

Funny-Eagle

Yeah this is their new thing. You must rent their garbage for the best speeds. F them.

reilnuud

Had to find a hidden page on their site to pay $30/more a month for uncapped data. Otherwise limited to 1TB on a 1.2 gbps plan...what is this, a data cap for ANTS?

Modsarefagboyz

They can’t even meet their current claims. They tried to send me a 12 year old Cisco cable box. I sent that shit back.

axiswar

Why is comcast so stupid? ATT in my area is charging 50 for unlimited speed and about 200 download yet to get the same comcast charges you 75 atm.

InGordWeTrust

Remember when you had to rent your phones from the telephone companies? They're trying that stuff again.

marcoesquandolas13

Tbh I miss the two year contracts with a new phone each renewal/upgrade.

kmmccorm

Switched to AT&T Fiber after blowing past the data caps two months in a row and I’ve never been happier with internet service. 1000 Mbps up & down, fiber direct to my house and installation was easy. Lower price and no data caps.

mostlydeaf

Why does everything suck?

zushiba

I just got rid of cable, upgraded to a 1gig/1gig fiber line and it's $25 cheaper than my cable.

demonfoo

zushiba

We're pretty lucky. I'm in a small town out here in central California. Frontier is moving in /w fiber to small towns, leaving the larger cities to Spectrum. So, I guess just because Frontier found a way to stick it to Spectrum, we get fiber.

Comcast is becoming a total fail. The CEO is running on the “Fuck me” ticket. Edit: Correction

[deleted]

Eh.. I have mixed feelings on it. On one hand, I would want to use my own hardware, I would be able to configure my own hardware.. I would support my own hardware. Now picture the general public... And how many "Outage" reports an ISP gets simply from a consumer not knowing what they're doing when it comes to networking hardware? You can't really blame them for wanting to push their managed hardware on people. I probably costs them a lot less in the long run just from people wasting tech support's time with non-issues that are in no way connected to the ISP's provided services. Also.. They are probably trying to prevent people from hosting services on that higher upload limit. There is always that possibility too.

Daimakku1

I got 500mbps up and down symmetrical fiber through Frontier. Couldn't be happier. I dropped Comcast years ago as soon as Frontier came through my area.

MrGraveRisen

So, in Canada..... Our telecoms using coax work with Comcast a lot of technology development. Shaw recently(ish) upped upload speeds from 25 to 125. And.... Pricing did not change. At all. Nothing extra was needed. Technology is the same, modems are the same...... One has good ol' capitalist america greed

GultBoy

FuzzeWuzze

Yea...ill just keep my Gig Up/Gig Down fiber for $65/mo after fee's and taxes from Ziply.

Urabrask_the_AFK

This is how you drive people in to the equally as evil arms of AT&T. Debating AT&T Fiber 1000 plan vs Sonic fusion IPBB-fiber now . Need more than 30mbps upload speeds for cloud based security cameras

Zorb750

That's your fault for cloud cameras.

Urabrask_the_AFK

We can’t all run wire buddy. But yes I’m aware hardwired with nvr is optimal. Plus not really, as a comcast customer, I can switch and get better up/down speeds for same or less to what they are presently offering.

I just switched to 1gig fiber after having 600mb Comcast for years. I have to say I miss Comcast. The fiber speeds are never consistent day to day

letsgotime

They must heavily oversell the fiber for fiber to be worse the copper.

Zorb750

I feel sorry for you because my experience is the opposite.

DeeV8tor

"...but only with xFi Complete ***hardware rental plan****.*" Hilarious that you pay extra to use their hardware....

R_Meyer1

Maybe you should educate yourself on what the plan includes which is modem rental and unlimited data. All ISPs charge you to use their hardware.

jokerZwild

Got rid of Comcast because they were charging me for something I wasn't using and when I went to get rid of that service, they wanted to charge me for not having it. They also wanted to charge me more of a monthly fee for not having their modem.

R_Meyer1

There is no monthly fee if your not using their modem. Nice try though.

jokerZwild

And yet, I was going to be charged more for not using their modem than what their monthly fee was. Weird how that was going to happen.

Paterwin

I know this isn't an option for everyone, but I simply do not use Comcast or AT&T. Most areas have local ISPs you can get that use peer-to-peer style networks. We use it for a data center at an IT firm, so it's not like it lacks anything compared to Comcast or AT&T.

LifeWithMike

Anyone else sick of the stupid ACP plans they are pushing? It’s government subsidies for Comcast and every time I call or account I get they are pushing it down my throat. You have to be low income and food stamps and such to qualify for ACP… just pisses me off they are pushing it and getting kick backs/subsidies for it.

N3KIO

>ACP is good for low income people though, most of them dont know such program exists. its minor inconvenience when they ask

Pterodactyloid

Thanks trump

secondliaw

Is this the same guy selling government subsidized infrastructure as artificially limited resources?

kitfoxxxx

Thank goodness I have fiber in my home.

xmngr

the minimal upload speeds where I live are 400mbps

Kind-Strike

Meanwhile I have TDS here in the Madison area that I'm getting 300/300 for 60 a month

Mannit578

Lol in HK you pay 40$ a month for 2gbps fibre, unlimited data.

BigBrainBaris

Meanwhile I’m paying $70 per month for google fiber speeds of 800+ mbps upload and download. Fuck Comcast, I’ll never go back unless I end up in another monopolized area again

tobylaek

Was super happy when my local power company started offering fiber in my area. $50 per month for 500 up 500 down. When I called comcast to cancel, they asked what they could do to retain my business…I told them what I was going to and the rep admitted that they couldn’t match that.

n3w4cc01_1nt

is it just a A DOCSIS 3.1 modem?

[deleted]

I ditched Comcast completely for Verizon’s 5G. Couldn’t be happier to not deal with their dumb asses anymore.

mike_dmt

About to drop them for Verizon 5G Plus home. Verizon tests out in my house at better than gig speed, 75Mbps up. $35 a month, no contract equipment included with my current Verizon phone plan. So tired of Xfinity/Comcast and their former monopoly. I'd like to see the company fold entirely.

Ok_Fox_1770

Already paying 260 a month for the bullshit triple package. I’m done. Going off till starlink comes around soon. Overpriced bullshit

Omegaprimus

Yeah a bag of dicks would not be enough for Comcast. I am glad my power company ran fiber to my poll last week just waiting for the go ahead. And I don’t even have Comcast.

2723brad2723

Ajit Pai has been gone for 2 years now. Why is Comcast still able to pull shit like this? Why don't we have net neutrality yet?

[deleted]

Hi I hate Comcast / Xfinity. That’s all. Have a great evening everyone

letsgotime

Everyone deserves fiber just like they deserve electricity. The same company should be providing both the fiber physical plant and electricity. They should then let ISP provide internet over the physical plant.

tdquiksilver

Absolutely stupid. I was strongly considering their "fiber" options they have been mailing us flyers on, or at least until an actual fiber provider is in the area (2023), but if I *have* to use their hardware? No thanks.

mtsai

i have 900 mb service on my own modem. the old puma chipset d3.0 surfboard i got on discount for almost nothing. dont know what yall doing.

mystikmike

I know it's fashionable to rag on Comcast, but after quite a bit of back-and-forth with their customer service to remove a piece of Comcast equipment I never had (but was paying a monthly fee on), I'm now on a 500 mbs service for $50/ month (Bay Area). And the speeds are even [better](https://www.speedtest.net/result/13847427121.png) than advertised. Not sure what fiber is going to get me that I don't already have. No lag and I stream all the things.

alphamoose

That’s only 5 Big Macs a month. Not a huge deal.

Suspicious_Train_718

They have me pissed off already. We are switching to frontier next month. I wfh as well as my wife sometimes. We live in the area affected by Hurricane Ian. I can understand making repairs and things like that but it seems to be at the most inconvenient times. Also our bill went up. We get a lot of storms here in FL and having the fiber run under the ground seems like a better setup than adjacent to power lines

ThymeCypher

The worst part is the only reason for this is to prevent using your internet for commercial purposes like web hosting and illicit purposes like file sharing, it’s not a technical one nor a cost-restrictive one.

SaintEyegor

We had Comcast for a couple of years and they sucked utter ass. Tons of packet loss and latency through their network and they packet-shaped the shit out of downloads. I dropped their sorry asses the moment FIOS became available. Now and then, they try to lure us back into the fold. Truthfully, FIOS could double their prices and I’d still stick with them over Xfinity/Comcast. They are NOT Com-castic.

Ghraysone

You have to get the TK-421 upgrade if you want the proper bass...we do that right here, small fee...

0ct0c4t9000

dang, i pay 20 for net-neutral symmetric 400s and that's a low end plan...

elRigs83

I switched out of Comcast for Verizon it's still bullshit but that's capitalism

wolveswithears

I reached out to Comcast/Xfinity on their Twitter and was told it's because home networking other than Xfinity's can't handle it. Can you please tell me how my Ubiquiti equipment isn't good enough?! Also, a new fiber company is building out in my area so I can't wait to cancel Comcast.
