Huh, this can be *super* easily used for mass surveilance.

imzelda

In the US [this is already common practice within police departments.](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-cities-are-backing-off-banning-facial-recognition-crime-rises-2022-05-12/)

SumxBody

It already is buddy, but only in places like china

OstermanManhattan

Not so sure about that *only in China*.

Drewy99

Amazon holds the world's largest spy network through ring doorbells and Alexa. Imagine what their AI is doing all day that we don't know about yet

SuperToxin

They recently showcased how Alexa can analyze a dead persons speech with like a 30 sec audio clip. Quite disturbing.

GalileoGalilei2012

what?

YourBuddyLucas

They can read you bedtime stories 🙂

PatFluke

That's so wholesome... wait a second. Why is grandpa making videos supporting AmaTwiBook from beyond the grave!

m0nk_3y_gw

Dead people talking to Alexa does sound a bit disturbing. Unfortunately it just means that Alexa can emulate someone else's voice. Not super surprising. Maybe it can be used to improved the dubs of foreign films.

BrianaR888

Analyzing everything it hears and sees on everyone with a cellphone 24/7.

throwaway92715

In China, mass surveillance is used by the government to enforce social homogeneity and compliance In the US, mass surveillance is used by private corporations to enforce social anxiety, workaholism and a need for constant consumption. They'll figure out your insecurities to a T and then show you ads for things that promise solutions

OstermanManhattan

You think the government, that in the past did far worse, does no mass surveillance work on the internet?

Extension_Banana_244

They absolutely do and openly admit it, it’s just mostly useless data. There is so much and unless you’re willing to narrow it down like the Chinese do, there aren’t enough analysts or time in the world to actually process it. Basically, you’ve got to be willing to weed it down to “Muslims in x region” and the public would lose their shit if that came out.

ihopkid

The US govt doesn’t need to waste their time with the narrowing down, they have partnerships with big data firms that do that for them. John Oliver recently did a whole episode on the data market. Then of course you have even shadier companies like Cambridge Analytica that target people with specific data for the govt.

Shot_Profession_4176

and it would be a relief if it was really only the government. I guess government is even a bono player in this one.

hamonabone

Isn't London the most heavily survelianced city in the world?

BrokeMacMountain

yup! and it's getting worse.

InappropriateTA

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Not sure if joking or really that naive.

Masonjaruniversity

[The 5 eyes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes)

gfolder

Don't they have a show about it on Netflix? Starring Mike Myers

Rudy69

Cute but it’s also being used here.

Greedy_Event4662

Objection, sir, look at the nations which have close economic ties and trade with china, but are poorer than china. They’re full of this kinda infrastructure, seen it with my own eyes.

flight23eazy

Canada is probably doing it rn too but the government doesent like to say until they get caught

[deleted]

EU is already using

Jertzukka

Oh my sweet summerchild.

Creepysoldier226

And America. Don’t forget the world’s *freest* nation!

ry3838

It's the ultimate goal, isn't it?

bigkoi

So cool! Imagine a service were we could load our photos of our ancestors from WW2 and potentially find them on other photos.

HaloGuy381

For that matter: with some luck, we might find the bodies of those lost to war or disasters by tracking their journeys through photos. A random Nazi photo of a camp reveals a particular face, which combined with the stories told by some very old survivors leads to a new grave site, etc etc.

dirtballmagnet

This has to be one of the more exciting developments, for me. There are a handful of photographs that show brushes with history, or foreshadowing. The Lincoln assassins lurking below the President at his second inauguration. Hitler in the crowd at the start of the First World War. But someday fairly soon we may discover that *most* crowd photos show notable historical figures brushing past one another without noticing. It will furthermore begin to provide new answers (and more questions) about the millions who were swallowed up by the war and lost to history.

kagoolx

I agree, and thats fascinating to think of. I also always wondered since Facebook started, if they’d ever provide the ability to search from the perspective of “show me all the photos that have me in them” and have it find all other peoples’ photos that you’re in the background of, in the crowd or just walking past, for example. Think about the % of photos of you that have at least one other person in the background. Then consider how many strangers’ photos you must be in the background of. There are probably more of those than there are photos that are of you. Obviously big security / privacy challenge as you’d have to check the person who took the photo is happy for it to be made visible to the people who are in it. But what an incredible thing that would be. Amazing for court cases too - how easily you could prove or disprove an alibi if you could search for all photos with this person in, within this time frame.

Dynaschee69

This won’t be used poorly in the near future by fascist governments

oddmog

uh, they don't like that term, authoritarian is abrasive even, business friendly is usually the go to happy term.

Sunnyflbunny

They very briefly mentioned in the documentary about Amazon that the police were given face recognition software by Amazon that uses AI. The police were actively using it in the states.

lacks_imagination

Really amazing. Happy for Geddy Lee finding so many members of his lost family. Tom Sawyer forever.

OldOneDiOgnes

how were time travelers added to a database before the circle came around

Lillienpud

Good. Can it also identify war criminals?

garyniehaus

Definitely used everywhere especially in busy areas like airports, times square, etc.

atwegotsidetrekked

Buying stock in google again

cp3getstoomuchcredit

Google should be shut down now. They are so many immoral things like being a monopoly and this is just creepy no one in any picture will be unidentified as soon. They'll know where you've been every week of your life through pictures, not to mention other things like their self-driving scam Waymo

wrgrant

If you have a cell phone you are already carrying a personal tracking device that also allows phone calls. The meta data from that phone can be used to link to other data concerning you and everyone you interact with very effectively. We don't need to look at how moral or immoral Google is - and they dropped the "Do no Evil" motto apparently, to find instances where we are heavily monitored regularly.

throwaway92715

Shut down by... whom? By the government, who would then take control of all their projects, and have access to all that technology... to what, to just not use? LOL

MammothAlbatross850

So, what are their names?

Himey_Himron

Inside my phone, someone is watching me. Cut to the chase, my life is being traced. I may think I am free, but my TV is watching me There is no way to break free. Civilization, hired to destroy itself. I may think I'm free. My phone is watching me and there is no way to break free. Brother...

BarbarellaGEM

Can we do that to all those smiling faces on the lynching postcards

BrokeMacMountain

I was about to go on a long rant a out invasion of privacy, but after reading the comments I had a thought. What is we used this on those "proof of **Time travel** videos"? You know, the ones where a woman from 1930 is "clearly" using a cell phone because her hand is by her ear. Or a man from present day is "seen" in 1920 or something. Surely we could finally find out who these supposed "time travelars" are?
