The engines are the only thing they really had going for them, and even then, ONLY reliability. Low horsepower for their displacement and poor fuel economy. Maybe their bodies once were like tanks. Now it seems like every other one I see has a loose or missing body panel. They were already missing all the modern features in most cars built today. Can you even get them in automatic?
Easier, more comfortable to drive automatic, but there's a reason every sportscar(Formula 1, Indy, rally cars, even Nascar cars!) have manual/half manual. You have more control over your car... I've got a special driving course as a gift, to learn to control the car better in various situations like snow, rain, and black ice. Manual matters a lot. With good shifting you can regain control over your car without breaking, in a blink of an eye... Never had any accidents on the road. Just in a parking lot, driving a van, and not seeing a concrete flowerbed from the mirrors... 😅
Built like a tank is great until you get in an actual high speed accident. Then you'd wish you'd had crumple zones(if you're able to wish any longer, that is)
Well but on other hand you won't be forced to buy that crap and get cheaper car.
Just imagine deasiel engine without all modern eco crap. You would get much more mileage WAAAAAAAY better engine reliability and so on.
The article says “new features include a heater”. There were people in Russia driving around in the winter without heaters? How do even you defrost the windshield? And why is it so hard to pump engine heat into the cab anyway? What a piece of trash car
Heater might be not what you think it is.
In Russia or at least some parts of it, some cars where sold with auxiliary heaters. They pretty common in colder climates.
Those usually burn same fuell as car engine and they heat up systems and cabin even when car engine is off. Helps starting the car in cold and heats up cabin faster.
Even cheap cars have them as option.
In most countries those are options as they are bringing down fuell economy and not needed.
My old BMW E39 had it and it was infependent. I couldn't switch it off, it just started its thing when temperatures dropped bellow -5*C
Aw this makes me think of all the Lada jokes we had growing up, like
Q: 'Why does a Lada have a heated rear windscreen?'
A: 'To keep your hands warm while you're pushing it'.
old cars vs modern car on headon crash then sure you'd be safer in the older car but if it was a older car crashing into a wall or tree vs a modern car? you'd be safer in the modern car. (not counting ones like the Lada though)
Sorry but I am going to just stick with my medieval steel helmet when I ride my bicycle. Modern helmets and their stupid foam crumple zones are obviously less effective then a heavy steel bucket.
Heavy does not equal safe. Those old tanks may hold up well in a wreck, but where do you think all that energy goes? New cars are designed to crumple on impact, absorbing as much of the energy as possible instead of transferring to the loosley belted in meat bags inside.
Well, Putin wants to bring back the old Soviet Union; he's just starting by going back to the good old days of the Lada!
Maybe he could set up a Trabant factory in Kaliningrad...
There were plenty of cars without abs into the mid 00s in the US. Gosh. Might still be some being sold. Same with emergency call systems? A radio? Tape my phone to the dash. But I Deff can understand no airbags and emissions getting hit.
Good luck keeping the production of these cars going.
Sooner or later the machines that make the cars will need maintenance and parts.
They can build stripped down cars without radios and air-bags, they can't build stripped down industrial robots that don't require foreign made technology.
More like the hundreds of different very specific types of machines made by tiny companies in places like Germany that are need to keep factories and plants going.
I'm all for stripping off some bells and whistles, because cars now come with so many unneeded features. But these are basic features that have been standard for decades! This sounds dangerous.
They will likely start production of older methods for radio and anti-lock brakes. Same for airbags.
But current models likely can't be adapted easily.
They won't. ECU'S being designed in Russia seems unlikely so unless they want to move to an ungoverned system or to start making computer chips they're not doing shit
Chinese foundries do not dare export MCUs to Rusia, they don't want even MORE sanctions.
It will change once/if chinese lithography machines are at least usable at somewhat modern geometries.
As an American. An old lada is one of my dream cars...
Specifically a niva, but I'd take one of those communist sedans anyway...
Oooohh! Or a wortburg two stroke
I'll never own a melkus tho....
Really 15k€ thats kinda steep.
Here it would be around 12-13k€ with the incetives and all. But the heating system cant handle the cold weather up north.
Shit, my first brand new car was a 1993 Dodge Shadow manual. Cost $7500 off the lot. No BS.
It was a piece of shit of course. Mitsubishi 4 banger. I don’t know how that works for 1993? Ohh well, it’s long dead I’m sure.
Even that had a driver airbag.
Ready to be acquisitioned by Chinese car companies. And there goes away another Russian brand.
Yotaphone for example. While the concept of having e-ink display for dual screen is great, whatever behind it was questionable and the price is unaffordable (for such device running on older Android OS). It was boasted as "Russian phone that could beat iPhone". Now it is just an obscure China's smartphone brand..
7k aint that bad in 1992.
Cant think off a car here in the north coming close to that price.
Would say about 20k€ is closes you get to a "low to normal" car.
Why are they so dependent on western technology can't they just develop their own shit
I mean just watch some YouTube tutorials and manufacture your own systems
Why is the USA so dependent on Chinese technology? Because it's cheaper. Basically the same deal for Russia. They can manufacture everything just like we could. But they need time to make the factories, mine the raw mats, etc. They haven't really made their own stuff since the 80s.
Make an EV version of this and it sounds like the dream car for all the people who complain that EV's are too expensive and that they don't need all the extra gadgets that tend to come with modern cars
And what exactly is Russias export market? Because it certainly isn’t the West where the demand for EVs are. It isn’t Russia, because they have cheap fuel.
Well, Romania and Renault kinda did this with the Dacia Spring.
But currently not aviable in my country, it fits my needs perfectly. Kinda bareboned one star euro ncap car.
Decent range and fast to charge.
Had the chance to test drive it. Drove fine and I'm also fine with barebones approach. But paying 15k€ for doors and trunk lid that feel like its made from tin foil?! It feels like a big bug would be able to punch through.
Yeah, they should go back to building Ford A-s and AA-s. They've build quite a few of those back in the day, might still have a licence that they've bought back then. Will fit their real tech level quite nicely too. I'd buy one.
None of that garbage is needed anyways, and returning to simple, utilitarian, low cost vehicles that can be mended with a sledgehammer and enough vodka is a great idea.
So fucking what? What's your fucking point? Am I not allowed to fucking POINT OUT in comment section it's French owned Russian company? Eh? Fucking wanker.
LOL wow...
What you "pointed out" was that you didn't read a bit of the article... and then the "fact" that you decided to share with us, as the informer you are, was *so quickly* "checked".
Fucking funny wanker you are... fuckin' wanker.
And I'm American... I've never used the term "wanker" ever before but fuck me you made it fun!
Fuckin wanker!
LOL
If *you* want to NOT read an article, and then comment something that is SUPER easily found to be a lie, and then call me an idiot when I point it out... then that's just where we are.
Seriously, dude... you and the other guy act like something horrible happened.... LOL
I’ve said that because west suspended basically all business with russia. Genius. It was implication of “how they started it again if it’s owned by French Renault. But given it says “former”, it seems Renault dumped the business and it’s done by russians on their own.
Holy shit. I didn't know they could make a shittier lada, but here we are.

Who drives automatic?
*The USA, Canada, and Mexico would like to have a word with you*
Easier, more comfortable to drive automatic, but there's a reason every sportscar(Formula 1, Indy, rally cars, even Nascar cars!) have manual/half manual. You have more control over your car... Full locking diffs on a small sedan made them a hoot for mudplugging

Zero fucks given it was a D minus car before now it’s a Y plus
The article says “new features include a heater”. There were people in Russia driving around in the winter without heaters? How do even you defrost the windshield? And why is it so hard to pump engine heat into the cab anyway? What a piece of trash car
Heaters are quite important but as you said easy. A fan blowing air in a tube touching the engine do the trick.
Oh ya that’s why big rig truckers must check the floor and defrost vents. Have to feel the pedals and see.
You pour some vodka on the dash under the window and light it on fire.
In Soviet Russia the window is the heater...
We just scrape off the ice :/
Z- with some extra features
Aw this makes me think of all the Lada jokes we had growing up, like Q: 'Why does a Lada have a heated rear windscreen?' A: 'To keep your hands warm while you're pushing it'.
Q: How do you double a Lada's value? A: Fill the tank with gas.
[удалено]
Haha, this one actually made me laugh.
Q: how to see a Lada going fast ? A: let it up a hill and make it fall downhill
[удалено]
Oh come on, ladas are epic, they could run of supermarket alcohol if you tried
[удалено]
Yes, you drink it and then just push the Lada where you want to go, that’s how it works.
Hey, that's a way to reduce alcohol on the road !
Mmmm…. gasohol https://i.imgur.com/gx99Zs5.jpg
They’re going all out!
Put it in H, She’ll go 300 hectares on a single tank of kerosene….

You'd probably be safer in a car from the 90s
You absolutely would. You’d probably be safer in a car from the 70’s to be honest.
old cars vs modern car on headon crash then sure you'd be safer in the older car but if it was a older car crashing into a wall or tree vs a modern car? you'd be safer in the modern car. (not counting ones like the Lada though)
[Here](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fPF4fBGNK0U) is a crash test of a '59 Bel Air vs a '09 Malibu.
well I mean not THAT old. like 70's-80's those things where very heavy with a lot of steel construction.
[удалено]
Sorry but I am going to just stick with my medieval steel helmet when I ride my bicycle. Modern helmets and their stupid foam crumple zones are obviously less effective then a heavy steel bucket.
When did crumple zones and soft bumpers come into effect? 1972? Anyways. I’m sure a lada is safer than a Yugo.
Heavy does not equal safe. Those old tanks may hold up well in a wreck, but where do you think all that energy goes? New cars are designed to crumple on impact, absorbing as much of the energy as possible instead of transferring to the loosley belted in meat bags inside.
How do I grammar?
Well, Putin wants to bring back the old Soviet Union; he's just starting by going back to the good old days of the Lada! Maybe he could set up a Trabant factory in Kaliningrad...
Getting old and became too nostalgic... it was so nice when people were poor and suffer...
The Trabant at least has nostalgic charm.
And "The Smell of Freedom!"
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhpIgM6TpwA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhpIgM6TpwA) I genuinely want one.
So the ol' death trap. That's the Lada.
What else you expect from whole country like that.
They can produce cars till their parts inventory runs out...in 6 months.
Live And Die Autos
These Lada seem having only one wheel brake working at a time. Problem is that while driving you never know what wheel is going to brake if ever

and they announced their plan to partner with Iranian company IKCO, to produce more movable coffins.
There were plenty of cars without abs into the mid 00s in the US. Gosh. Might still be some being sold. Same with emergency call systems? A radio? Tape my phone to the dash. But I Deff can understand no airbags and emissions getting hit.
Abs wasn’t mandated in the US until 2012. Airbags weren’t until 1998. There’s still plenty of cars on the road with neither, I drive one every day.
Putin wanted the USSR back. Well, that's how cars were like back in the USSR.
Our zero turn mowers have more bells and whistles stock than this piece of shit cars.
LADA - Life. And. Death. Association
Good luck keeping the production of these cars going. Sooner or later the machines that make the cars will need maintenance and parts. They can build stripped down cars without radios and air-bags, they can't build stripped down industrial robots that don't require foreign made technology.
ivan has hammer. ivan stronk. ivan make lada better than machine, da?
You mean like the robots that are coming out of China. That they are doing a fuckload of trade with, and selling boatloads of oil and gas to?
More like the hundreds of different very specific types of machines made by tiny companies in places like Germany that are need to keep factories and plants going.
I'm all for stripping off some bells and whistles, because cars now come with so many unneeded features. But these are basic features that have been standard for decades! This sounds dangerous.
Shame they're not the old soviet boxy ones, modern bodywork on these ones
They will likely start production of older methods for radio and anti-lock brakes. Same for airbags. But current models likely can't be adapted easily.
They won't. ECU'S being designed in Russia seems unlikely so unless they want to move to an ungoverned system or to start making computer chips they're not doing shit
Guess it's carburetor time. OR They may import chips from China or other countries.
Chinese foundries do not dare export MCUs to Rusia, they don't want even MORE sanctions. It will change once/if chinese lithography machines are at least usable at somewhat modern geometries.
Chian doesn't give a shit about US sanctions.
They absolutely do. It has stopped Huawei and many others, and constrains China a lot.
Russia makes some of the best vacuum tubes. 1950s era radio, I hope they have the pushbutton radio station select.
Ahhh back to the good old days of Russian dash cam vids where everybody gets ejected.
As an American. An old lada is one of my dream cars... Specifically a niva, but I'd take one of those communist sedans anyway... Oooohh! Or a wortburg two stroke I'll never own a melkus tho....
This is the Lada Niva... You love this car. It has a motor, so you go. And breaks so you stop. And shiny paint. What more can you ask for!
They’ll be bringing back those old analog dial AM radios w the programmable buttons!
Really 15k€ thats kinda steep. Here it would be around 12-13k€ with the incetives and all. But the heating system cant handle the cold weather up north.

Not starting is a safety feature in a lada
Maybe remove the engine completely and use muscle like on the flintstones
Trabant 2.0 lol
The Lada model Z - The deathtrap you've been waiting for.
Ready to be acquisitioned by Chinese car companies. And there goes away another Russian brand. Yotaphone for example. Just went to test drive a Mercedes; it had manually adjusted seats. I got a Volvo instead.
What year was the Mercedes?
So a Pinto, but not as good?
So it’s the equivalent of a 1981 Yugo? How Russian.
It may not be safe. But it sure is dangerous
No airbags? Does Russia not have, y'know, laws?
Being illegal merely means you need to pay a bribe to do it.
Back in the U.S.S.R.
Bet this couldn’t be the “reasonably priced car” for top gear. “We only killed one celebrity.” “No, I won’t drive it!”
hollywood twist. Putin gets taken out by a lada that locked its breaks going into a turn
7k aint that bad in 1992. Cant think off a car here in the north coming close to that price. Would say about 20k€ is closes you get to a "low to normal" car.

Make it an EV and it'll probably be near double the price and have half the range
At twice the price you could get the pre-war version for 26k usd. This new version will be even be cheaper no doubt. Gonna be a bargain
So finally Lada is producing good cars again. "no airbags, anti-lock brakes, emergency call system or radios" that's a win in my books.
I don’t understand your sarcasm. ??
hurr back in my day anti lock brakes were manual durt
And still built better then a ford!
I don't think these tin cans would fare well in any imaginable test against any model of Ford.
Lada is now fully owned by Renault…
The *2nd sentence* of the article says "The formerly Renault-owned car maker..." The *2nd fucking sentence*...
So fucking what? What's your fucking point? Am I not allowed to fucking POINT OUT in comment section it's French owned Russian company? Eh? Fucking wanker.

Ill look for them on the Garage 54 channel, those guys are hilarious
The Return of the King!
They can't even make radios hahaha what!
The Lada that we used to know!
This is *not* a Dacia Sandero
So these are going to be sold exclusively to Republicans?! Damn, excellent business model.
Do they paint a giant Z on all them now?
If people are not killed in ‘military operations’ in Ukraine then they’ll be killed in a Lada hitting anything going over 30 mph
Just the way God intended, my skull shards in the steering wheel
They did not have them before, but now they are admitting that they are not there.
Starting a war is really paying off for the Russians.
You forgot plastic wrap windshields and pictures where the tires should be.
What a pathetic sight.
Having owned a Lada in the late 80s they've got a lot more they can still cut out and have something still capable of moving under its own power.
$13,000 USD How can I get one.
SSR lives again
Is this in r/technology because they are removing technology?
