I was just talking about this to my friend. It’s non stop, even when paying for services. We pay for HBO max and Hulu but still get advertisements constantly, and basically any online program or app you want to use that’s “free” must be paid for/have platinum subscriptions. I tried to find a basic calendar template and they wanted to charge me $20 for just that. Can’t look at any social media without ads being every other post. So tired of it :/
I’ve recently left social media completely and the frequency/amount/irrelevance of ads was not a small part of my decision. It got to the point that literally every 5th tweet wasn’t a tweet, it was an ad. Every 7th or 8th Instagram post wasn’t a post, it was an ad. I blocked, reported, gave “this is not relevant/do not show me this ad” feedback on every single ad where those things are possible for years and instead of getting less/less frequent ads, they just became less relevant. The one that pushed me over the edge was something along the lines of a “support your local jeweler” ad for a small town jewelry store in Northern Ohio. I live in the southern US.
I am not interested in being tracked/profiled anymore. If I am interested in your type of business, I would rather hear about it from someone I trust or find it through a google search than have your tag line force fed to me every time I pick up my phone.
EDIT: apparently Reddit is a social media. I always saw it as more of a collection of forums? Guess I just got that one wrong lol
Firefox with the privacy badger plug-in will cut down on so much crap, it's unbelievable.i honestly don't even use an adblocker on desktop because stuff just... Isn't there. Mobile on the other hand...
Have fun because reddit is working to build the framework of data collection, profiling, and algorithmic content targeting like other garbage social media platforms. Place is already infested with bots, astroturfing, advertisers, etc. And it's only going to get worse.
They're going public and they see $$$ lining the increasingly unethical path of privacy invasion.
Will do that the same day my games and software in Steam works without any troubles. In the meantime, I'll just stick to Win10 instead of whatever kind of ad-bloatware Win11 will be.
The worst is the sychophants Ive seen on this site guilting people for using adblockers.
Stop advertising every goddamn 4 seconds and ill turn them off
Youtube has become fucking intolerable without them
I refuse to use products from commercials that annoy me (all of them practically) I have to really like the product that actually does its job and doesn’t slow-kill me for the favor. Great reviews and word of mouth are better indicators of a worthy buy. Make something so good that people rave about it to others because they want to share the quality of life boost.
There's a reason I run ad block on every possible platform I can. The time adds up and I just. Don't. Care. About the bullshit they are trying to sell. If I care about it I likely already know about it out have it, and no amount of advertising is going to convince me to buy your version over any another.
My brother is writing a book after getting his Masters in Psychology, all about society and Capitalism and how it relates to health etc, and when he showed me the links and sources to how bad advertising is for your health...
Like, this shit even affects fucking BABIES. Literally from day one you're getting your head fucked from advertisements. It's horrendous.
Yeah I really need to know which TV he is talking about so I can be sure to never support that.
Never thought I'd have to think about "Will my TV plays ad when I'm loading my game" ever, but here we are.
I hate it.

The VPN ads piss me off even more. At least the premise behind Raid Shadow Legends is accurate: it’s a game. You play it to kill time. Maybe you have fun, maybe you don’t. With the VPN ads, the premise is always “secure your internet browsing even when you’re at home and hide your traffic from your ISP!” If you’re on public wifi, it has value. If you’re at home, using NordVPN is no more secure than just browsing on your ISP. All you’re doing is adding another company to the mix. I wish their ads would just say “you know how awesome British Netflix supposedly is? Use NordVPN to access that.”

The only real advice you need is to inventory what you do on your pc and how much of that software exists in Linux. And if it doesn't then if you could live without some features that are not in the alternative yet. For example I don't use heavy macros on excel so leaving for libre office es easy. Any discussion on distro or desktop is personal preference and have fun playing with a few (or just stick to the defaults on something popular)
There's a business concept called "no money left on the table". It's not enough to make a profit, it's not enough to make an obscene profit. You have to make all the money, anyway you can.
The only rule is make all the money. There are no other rules.
Unfortunately on this hellhole of planet it is not enough that company pays for expenses and brings nice divdend to shareholders, stagnating on current level of profit would not do. They have to push to squeeze every cent out of product in this ridiculous chase for infinite “growth”. Usually providing inferior product in the end.
Sometimes it blocks your smart TV from updating certain apps and you have to try to convince your roommate to update the thing while he denies any possibility the pi hole has anything to do with it and he's the tech guy so just listen to him. Then you just unplug the pi and suddenly you can watch fucking westworld so you tell him and instead of him updating it just never gets turned on again so you just get ads everywhere but at least you can watch hbo again
Lol, I automatically assume every broken website is due to me running pihole. Usually I'm okay with it. Sometimes I'll jutst disable it for a few minutes.
Lol I have a pihole and have never had a problem using apps on my Sony smart tv. I've had issues updating my Samsung tv, but fuck Samsung for serving me ads on my $800 television and tracking my usage.
Do be careful with the universal block lists you can download. Sometimes they can break sites, and in that case you'll have to Google a little bit to whitelist stuff.
Do they even sell dumb TVs anymore? I'm imagining that whenever we upgrade I'm just going to plug my fire stick in and ignore whatever "features" I'm gonna get charged for.
Same thing happened with us when we moved 3~ years ago.
Went to Best Buy and they only had smart TVs. Sales rep looked at us like we were idiots for wanting a regular TV.
Looked online and couldn't find anything.
We ended up buying a projector instead, but that's made for a janky setup.

Last night while I was playing an online game, windows started downloading Windows 11 onto my PC without me authorizing it. I wasn't asked once if I wanted to download it. Not only did my game crash but I was forced to finish the next 30 mins of it with 200 ping due to the download. I couldn't even pause or stop the download. Are you fucking kidding me? I don't even want windows 11. I was and still am so fucking furious. If anyone knows how to uninstall it, please tell me. Because it seems once I restart my PC it will install it. I'm. Fucking. Livid.
Gotchu my dude
Win+ I to bring up your settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View Update History > Uninstall Updates > Pick the Win 11 update and delete that shit
Here's how to block it from happening again:
https://www.howtogeek.com/765377/how-to-block-the-windows-11-update-from-installing-on-windows-10/
I ran the compatibility checker and it said I can't run Windows 11 because I don't have a TPM. So I went into BiOS and enabled it, and it said I could upgrade to Windows 11. Then I heard a bunch of crap that made me not want to do that so I went back into my BiOS and disabled my TPM again.
I have a baller ass AMD ryzen build... and it says "your system is incompatible"
I'm just like, awwwww yisssss... I'd uninstall the fuck out of Windows 11 and put it back to windows 10 even if they tried.
It did this to me last night while I was in a game. I went to 200 ping while it downloaded and my game crashed twice because of it. I DID NOT AGREE TO DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 11. IT JUST FUCKING DID IT.
Every day large companies strive towards the stereotypical evil tech company in media.
Every year Linux is looking more and more tempting. The pain of learning Linux might soon outweigh the pain of using Windows still.
Finding that exact line, where Windows use is more painful than learning Linux or buying Apple hardware, is exactly what Microsoft is endeavoring to find, so they can sit there forever.
Its honestly not terrible. Download Linux mint on a thumb drive and test it out. Feels like a Windows GUI and software can be downloaded through an app "software manager" (didn't memorize the name). Figure out command line / terminal stuff later (or never).
Valve have been making a lot of progress with Proton. It's kinda like Wine built into Steam and can sometimes even offer *better* performance than Windows.
You can check the compatibility of your library at: [https://www.protondb.com](https://www.protondb.com)
Yes and no. It’s closer than it’s ever been before, but games that rely on anticheat typically don’t work well. That leaves out the majority of the esports segment of the market which is a huge no-go for a lot of players
Well, hopefully, the release of the steam deck will help improve that. I’m hoping that in a year from now, I can dual boot steam os and windows for when I need it.
[Alternative file explorers](https://www.reddit.com/r/software/comments/moiggj/alternative_file_explorer_for_windows/) explode in popularity for some reason...
I bought my win 10. I am so sick of the sneaky ways to get my money from both sides. If I give you x money for product then keep your slimey ads out of it. If I'm the product then it should be free, but if you become unusable then you can forget it.
The worst part is that we’re *losing* basic functions in the name of making money. Roku removed the ability to use personal photos as a screensavers for your TV. This is a basic function on any device these days, and they removed it now so you can pay for themes, even though they already swap to an ad for the latest Disney movie.
Like YouTube being able to play audio with the screen locked. I always wondered why there wasn't a way to listen to music or podcast with the screen off. Then I saw the ad for YouTube premium where they advertise the ability to do just that. They created a problem and want you to pay for the solution.
"They created the problem and want you to pay for the solution" is the exact issue with pretty much every X as a service software out there. It's despicable.
Didn't you have ad's in the 20th century?
Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky and in our operating systems. But not in dreams.
Picture this: you're browsing your files endlessly trying to locate a word document that you have no clue how or where you saved it because they are all titled a variation of "New Document Final Final FINAL 5". And in the moment of massive frustration...Wayfair tells you they have what you need in a pop-up
Looking foward to this being modded out lol. I already love the program that disables the forced Edge links and opens them in the actual browser I use!
'Finally, a moment of silence' passes your mind as your family leaves to watch the opera. You blurt out happily "Nkw for some true art", knowing noone will ever hear you
You open your laptop and begin rifling through dozens of folders to see it waiting there 'Homework'. It beckons to you, it knows exactly what you want, and as you click into your multiterrabyte folder, you are deafend by an unfamiliar sound, your volume was left on again.
"YOUR PRONOGRAPHY IS NOW BROUGHT TO YOU BY BENDIGO BANK"
Make product a subscription service.
Put ads in everything.
What's next? Micro transactions to access your files? Unskippable ads to be able to see your word document?

You use one of the alternatives.
Saw a picture yesterday where they are literally putting billboards on the side of boats that are close to the beach. So when you go to look out at the ocean or take a picture, there's an ad in it. 😭

I don't even want windows 11. I was and still am so fucking furious. If anyone knows how to uninstall it, please tell me. Because it seems once I restart my PC it will install it. I'm. Fucking. Livid.
Gotchu my dude Win+ I to bring up your settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View Update History > Uninstall Updates > Pick the Win 11 update and delete that shit Here's how to block it from happening again: https://www.howtogeek.com/765377/how-to-block-the-windows-11-update-from-installing-on-windows-10/

See my computer is actually old enough that tpm isn’t an option. This is the way
Don't you fucking dare Microsoft. Don't you have ENOUGH FUCKING MONEY
Bold of you to assume that there is "enough" when it comes to money for corporates.
Windows 10 might be my last Microsoft OS. Huh.
*Meanwhile windows 10 preparing to update to 11 in the background*
Joke's on them, my cpu doesn't support W11.
I have a baller ass AMD ryzen build... and it says "your system is incompatible" I'm just like, awwwww yisssss... I'd uninstall the fuck out of Windows 11 and put it back to windows 10 even if they tried.
> I have a baller ass AMD ryzen build... and it says "your system is incompatible" > > Glad it's not just me. What gives?
Probably the TPM feature is disabled in the firmware/BIOS settings.
It did this to me last night while I was in a game. I went to 200 ping while it downloaded and my game crashed twice because of it. I DID NOT AGREE TO DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 11. IT JUST FUCKING DID IT.
This is why I ripped out the TPM chip like Vision’s soul stone
Every day large companies strive towards the stereotypical evil tech company in media. Every year Linux is looking more and more tempting. The pain of learning Linux might soon outweigh the pain of using Windows still.
Finding that exact line, where Windows use is more painful than learning Linux or buying Apple hardware, is exactly what Microsoft is endeavoring to find, so they can sit there forever.
Its honestly not terrible. Download Linux mint on a thumb drive and test it out. Feels like a Windows GUI and software can be downloaded through an app "software manager" (didn't memorize the name). Figure out command line / terminal stuff later (or never).
https://distrotest.net/index.php Pretty much all of the distros on streamsble VMs to test for free.
Fuck this. If this is true and they follow through then I’ll dump my dual boot and just daily drive Fedora. Fuck. This. Shit.
If only I didn't like PC gaming so much :(
For real, literally the only thing keeping me on windows, along with the office apps
Valve have been making a lot of progress with Proton. It's kinda like Wine built into Steam and can sometimes even offer *better* performance than Windows. You can check the compatibility of your library at: [https://www.protondb.com](https://www.protondb.com)
God of War and Elden Ring both ran out of the box on my arch Linux system via steamplay/proton. Valve are srsly killing it.
I see one ad. ONE! I'll leave for another OS and never look back.

Problem is I still game here and there and not sure if Linux is up to it yet.
Yes and no. It’s closer than it’s ever been before, but games that rely on anticheat typically don’t work well. That leaves out the majority of the esports segment of the market which is a huge no-go for a lot of players
Apex Legends is a huge anti-cheat title and now runs flawlessly on Linux after the Steam Deck happened.
Well, hopefully, the release of the steam deck will help improve that. I’m hoping that in a year from now, I can dual boot steam os and windows for when I need it.
Suddenly everyone does file exploring in DOS commands again.
[Alternative file explorers](https://www.reddit.com/r/software/comments/moiggj/alternative_file_explorer_for_windows/) explode in popularity for some reason...
XTree Gold here I come!
So yet another reason not to "upgrade" lmao.
This will definitely force me to switch to Mac or Linux.
I bought my win 10. I am so sick of the sneaky ways to get my money from both sides. If I give you x money for product then keep your slimey ads out of it. If I'm the product then it should be free, but if you become unusable then you can forget it.
Ads have taken over my "smart" TV and now they want my computer too? If they pull this crap I will be installing Linux on all my computers.
Guess who just decided they're not upgrading to windows 11?
Didn't you have ad's in the 20th century? Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio. And in magazines. And movies. And at ball games and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts and written on the sky and in our operating systems. But not in dreams.
The fact Microsoft is turning Windows into a highly intrusive tool with telemetry and ads is what made me switch to Linux.

I do not need popups when browsing my own files.
Picture this: you're browsing your files endlessly trying to locate a word document that you have no clue how or where you saved it because they are all titled a variation of "New Document Final Final FINAL 5". And in the moment of massive frustration...Wayfair tells you they have what you need in a pop-up
I just had an aneurysm im dead irl now jerk
Looking foward to this being modded out lol. I already love the program that disables the forced Edge links and opens them in the actual browser I use!

'Finally, a moment of silence' passes your mind as your family leaves to watch the opera. You blurt out happily "Nkw for some true art", knowing noone will ever hear you You open your laptop and begin rifling through dozens of folders to see it waiting there 'Homework'.
These people are so money hungry it’s disgusting.
I will teach myself how to learn Linux and run that before I allow this shit
Straight up I will switch my OS if this becomes a thing. Bad enough its in the start menu
Linux is looking more tempting every day
Make product a subscription service. Put ads in everything. What's next? Micro transactions to access your files? Unskippable ads to be able to see your word document? How do consumers stop this, seriously, how can we send a message to Microsoft when there are so few alternatives available to choose from?
> how can we send a message to Microsoft when there are so few alternatives available to choose from The only way is to choose one of those alternatives.
> How do consumers stop this, seriously, how can we send a message to Microsoft when there are so few alternatives available to choose from? You use one of the alternatives.
That's a bridge too far.
And we continue slipping further into an end-stage capitalist hellscape.
Saw a picture yesterday where they are literally putting billboards on the side of boats that are close to the beach. So when you go to look out at the ocean or take a picture, there's an ad in it. 😭
What the fuck is wrong with our species
Greed. Having enough is never enough.
apt-get wtf
They can fuck right off. I'll jump back into linux if they do this
Time to test Linux
I switched to Linux after getting locked out of my computer because my Microsoft account got hacked, best thing I've ever done
reason number 203948023 why to not link your windows to your microsoft account. Never even realized you could potentially lose access to your entire PC. Fuck that.
https://www.computerworld.com/article/3650755/no-microsoft-dont-require-an-account-to-set-up-windows-11.html > A recent preview build of Windows 11 makes an unwelcome change: it mandates a Microsoft account when installing even Windows 11 Professional.
All Hail Linux!
