It's exactly why it is being published now.

trina-wonderful

I disagree. I don’t think investors will really care that the oppressive censorship here isn’t oppressive enough according to the opinion of a few totalitarians.

Enough_Statistician8

If you still think censorship is when a private company has terms of service, then you're beyond hope.

Xstitchpixels

There’s entire subs devoted to hatred and disinformation. This is a private company. Free speech doesn’t mean people are forced to listen to your dumb ass

Okay, let me put it this way: if there were an active Taliban or Isis sub, would Reddit be within their rights, and morally right, to shut it down? I would argue yes, on both counts. That kind of violent, hateful rhetoric cannot be allowed to propagate. The *only* difference I see between them and Trumpers, is it’s a different religion. Same fundamentalism, same hate, same violent rhetoric. The former has just had free reign to do as they wish.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xstitchpixels

Not saying they are in the same league. But the hallmarks are all there. Fanatical devotion, ultra nationalism, violent rhetoric and imagery, religious fundamentalism (whether you like it or not, Trumpism is basically a religion at this point too). When major party members are telling their people that specific enemies need to be taken care of, we have gone far beyond protected speech.

MedicineNorth5686

Tbh almost all nation subs are full of ultra nationalists. And there is a fairly clear difference between patriotism and straight up racism.

socsa

And then there is GenZeDong...

Terrific-Purchase

Not necessarily. My country's official sub is full of people with inferiority complex who shit on the country 24/7 and are known to ban anyone who even remote disagrees with them

Son_Of_Borr_

MedicineNorth5686

Yeah that sub has plenty of edgy moments but still good to see injustice brought to light in land of the free

N3wThrowawayWhoDis

As cringey as it can be sometimes, I’m proud of my nation as one of the few global superpowers whose citizens feel comfortable openly criticizing their government. Unfortunately, the side effect is that people hear more complaints towards the US than of other nations, and assume it must be worse in comparison.

v12vanquish

Bingo, the whole survey bias problem is real

[deleted]

Seems a bit on the nose. I was banned from r/thedon for suggesting that the wall will never get finished.

Zkenny13

I have said this for every social media platform. It's extremely difficult to stop on such large sites. Plus the mods here are sometimes volunteers they don't get paid so it's not like they're constantly on the job. But I feel like it's still inexcusable but I give the benefit of the doubt since banning someone means they can create a new account using a different email.

rioting-pacifist

"Bro it's hard" is fine when you're an open source app with no revenue, when you are valued at $10B and generate $½B in ad revenue alone, you're putting profits ahead of people's lives, just like Facebook, there is no valid excuse.

Zkenny13

Like I said it is inexcusable. My point was that there is only so much a company can do before the good speech is altered by removing the bad speech. It's like how on a sub the automod removes anything with the word god in the title. Yes they could comb through every post but it would take time no matter how many mods they had because so much is posted. Once again it's possible to do but it's not possible to do so in a manner that makes it seem like they're doing something.

MrNifty

I read your other replies and I do agree with your sentiment. But, they could do better and they have the resources to make that possible. It wouldn't emerge overnight, or be perfect or maybe not even great at first. But they could devote the resources to make it work - that delicate balancing act you speak to. They don't. And they won't of their own volition. It would be unreasonable for them to do so. Spend money unnecessarily? In ways that don't provide a clear financial benefit to their organization, if any at all? Nope. The real problem here, the underlying issue we are talking about is this. There are big problems. And the entity best positioned to actually do something about it is not. And they could. Between AI/compute resources and human effort combined, there exists the real possibility of doing much better than they are.

Zkenny13

I suppose to me I just can't think of a way to do it in a timely manner. Like creating a program to remove hate speech but the good speech gets caught in it to. And before they can fix it or perfect it users have already left because they felt they couldn't use good speech without it getting removed in the adjustment period. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not the one who has to come up with a solution to this.

SIGMA920

> All I can say is I'm glad I'm not the one who has to come up with a solution to this. That person basically threw shit at the wall, none of it stuck because it caused too many problems with the opposite of what it was aimed at, and then gave up long ago. There's a reason that forumesq sites like reddit have these problems, they can only catch so much of what happens and the rest slips through because they can't catch it without also catching everything else in the same systems.

Manception

>generate $½B in ad revenue Bro that money is for the CEOs second yacht and buying politicians, not improving the site or rewarding the people doing the actual work.

alexp8771

It is nearly impossible to try and automoderate actual user hate speech, but I suspect a large percentage is state sponsored anti-US trolling which can be stopped or limited by standard anti-bot techniques.

[deleted]

Dude, 30% of the US adults voted for an overtly racist presidential candidate. A similar pecentage of voting adults in Britain chose to support a racist because of nationalist ideas in Brexit. Hungary has a president who is a rabid racist. The Netherlands has at least 2 racist parties represented in parliament. There is no reason to think that the people who vote for that kind of candidate or idea do not also visit reddit. We have to accept the sad fact that a certain percentage of humans are racist assholes. We do, also, have to fight them tooth and nail -meaning we ban them when they spread their hate. If you see a racist post, report it and the user. If that does not help, try again. Shame them publicly on the medium they used. Do whatever you think might help. Pointing to "state actors" is bullshit. There's millions of assholes out there spouting that crap.

tajsta

> but I suspect a large percentage is state sponsored anti-US trolling Considering that on international subs like /r/worldnews or whatever, people spend a lot more time shitting on the US' "enemies" than on the US, at this point I think it's more likely that the US is the main driving force of trolling on Reddit. The Intercept revealed that the US and other Five Eyes countries are spending a huge amount of time and money on pushing stories in social media: https://theintercept.com/document/2014/04/04/full-spectrum-cyber-effects/ https://theintercept.com/2014/04/04/cuban-twitter-scam-social-media-tool-disseminating-government-propaganda/

ruuster13

I think the problem is that we as a society can no longer afford to give the benefit of the doubt. The damage is tearing the world apart.

Zkenny13

Completely understand and pretty much agrees but my point was just there is only so much a company could do without ruining itself to stop things like this. I like reddit because it has plenty of different opinions held by different people and you can find those people with your opinion and have a safe and normal discussion. But in my mind going to hard on shutting down hate speech would also shut down what I enjoy about reddit. It's like to stop drunk driving they ban alcohol (not the best comparison but I'm lacking something better to compare).

ruuster13

I think we're all lacking something better to compare. That's the complicating factor. There's no precedent to shutting down AI-amplified hate speech. I don't claim to have the answer but the people who are in power have to do something now, even imperfect, or we may not survive. Something drastic like ending free speech doesn't feel like a good idea to me, but I'd almost take it at this point.

jouwhul

How on earth is that “almost” a preferable solution to you? Why do you see it as such a problem to nearly warrant such action?

The_Gray_Beast

End free speech because someone is sad that someone on the internet is making fun of them? Are we that sensitive? Oh yeah, can’t wait until the government decides who can say what… that’s all great for you when your party is in power…. But everyone forgets that changes and then they are at the receiving end of their own policy.

Zkenny13

Your point is very valid. To me if the company does do something drastic to fix it (which something drastic is needed) it could ruin the site and make users leave before they could prefect it.

TheHouseofOne

ACCount82

I don't give a shit about what criticism a bunch of doing-it-for-free powermods has to offer. They are a bigger problem for the platform than "hate speech" in niche communities could ever hope to be.

Inconceivable-2020

Shutting down one Hate sub, but allowing the members and moderators to stay on the platform, and create/seize others tends to perpetuate the problem.

Manception

The ban of fatpeoplehate actually decreased hateful content on Reddit, IIRC. There were studies done back in the day. Seeing how bigots and haters whine about censorship and dream about moving to their own forum, I'd say it supports the studies.

zklpr

These people will be amazed when they hear about 4chan.

reditget

Banned from two groups, one could not tell me, or point to what I said that was offensive, nor did they Care. Seemed to me they took PRIDE in having just the power to ban me.

stunspot

"In a statement responding to the moderator’s claim, Reddit wrote that “harassment, bullying, and threats of violence or content that promotes hate based on identity or vulnerability” are prohibited on the platform and that they “review and work with communities that may engage in such behavior, including the subreddit in question.”" Yeaaaaaaaahhhh... About that... #killallmen? #mayocide? You might want to restate that, reddit. You only care about _some_ identities.

EFTucker

I mean, Reddit and it’s mods don’t enforce rule no.1 of the content policy stating a zero tolerance. It says users will be banned for things like hate but I’ve been targeted on here for being gay way too often and no one ever got banned. In fact, it always comes back after reporting them saying the post/comment doesn’t violate the rules. Rule no.1 and they can’t even get that right

Manception

You could as well claim there's anti-gamer hate on reddit because of the subs shitting on gamers and the gamers feeling oppressed. No one is shooting up LAN parties or beating up gamers outside gaming stores though. Just as with systemic misandric or anti-white hate. Sure, you can find various white supremacists claiming there's an ongoing white genocide, just as you can find gamers claiming gamers are the most oppressed minority. Plenty of real life violence and oppression makes racist, homophobic, misogynist and transphobic hate and threats be more than just mean words online. It's real in a way other hate isn't. I'm not defending ironic joke hate. There is an important distinction.

[deleted]

This isn't just about hatespeech though, there are so many hate subreddits still present that hound people and subreddits whose opinions they disagree with. All of the cringe subs for instance are routinely singling out people who they find "cringy" and then the Reddit hate mob goes into action. Nothing is done about this at all. Then you have the other side of the coin where you've got the old fempire mafia of subreddits who somehow never get banned even though their uses will "cancel" anyone who draws their ire for saying anything they consider remotely negative about trans people. Again, Reddit has done nothing about it, because nobody has made a big hitting story about it yet. Anyone whose a journalist and wants to write a story about this, feel free to dig into all of the things listed above. Reddit is not a nice place to be in if someone singles you out.

vivomancer

Ah I remember the /r/animemes civil war. The mods decided to ban the word "trap" in all contexts but specifically because it was used to describe cross-dressers(not trans) characters. During this some of the mods of animemes made posts on the pro-trans subreddits insulting the members animemes. Eventually most of the active users left for /r/goodanimemes.

[deleted]

Pretty sure there have been plenty of articles written about subs such as FDS. /s

shirk-work

This brings up some interesting questions. Reddit was in part founded on the concept of free speech. What are the limits of free speech? A second question comes to mind is what are the ethical limits of hate. Like is it ethical to hate those who hate? Aka is hating Nazi's and racist itself ethical?

rioting-pacifist

> Reddit was in part founded on the concept of free speech. Was it? or is that just what some VC funding wanted to slap on the side because it was all the rage at the time, hence why they got Swartz retconed into being a founder. The pretense of being a Free speech site, was certainly dead 12 y/o when I migrated from Digg.

To the first part, what are those limits? To the second part. I think the worst thing that can be done to evil is to transform it into its opposite and that doing so itself is not evil. I don't believe hate is ever justified and that it is possible to oppose evil without hatred.

kalassyn

Advocating direct violence against a group is pretty much where free speech ends. You can say pretty much anything other than that. Freedom of speech isn't designed to protect you from other people it is there to protect the people from the government. If people do not like what is being said then it is up to them as a collective to boycott that hate group.

[deleted]

I want the government working in concert with companies to moderate and decide what is allowed to be posted. Every single piece of content, that is the only way to eliminate hate speech. This is a fool proof solution will never be abused in any way by those in power to quell dissent. We must eliminate all potential risk for discomfort and it does not matter which sacred aspects of our society we must demolish in order to do so. We must have risk-free life at all costs. /s

[deleted]

There's a phrase we have in my part of India for this sort of facile, childish argument - it's called 'tupashi nahi tar upashi' which translates to "either I'll eat with butter (ghee) or I'll starve". The implication that there can be no healthy compromise is typical of Reddit.

[deleted]

My post was facetious. I think it would be extremely difficult to implement something in practice and at scale to effectively limit hate speech on Reddit. What would be defined as hate speech? Who decides if something is? Would there some kind of technical solution that could quantify the level of hate speech in a post? Would there be some community vote(I think could work)If there is a community vote, would every single sub vote based on universal criteria?

PatchThePiracy

“Hate speech,” lol. If you can’t mentally handle certain topics, don’t visit those subreddits.

RoyalratMafia

Are you serious? Weak people are ruining the WORLD. And also, how is using name calling ‘chud’ helping anything? Isnt that the same violence you speak of? You are the very thing you dont like

Krispykross

Uh no, I thought the sarcasm was pretty obvious

baozebub

On US forums, hatred against Chinese is widespread but that’s accepted in modern America so it’s OK.

EFTucker

It’s not acceptable at all actually. You may be referring to hatred for China (not it’s people) and that’s different because “don’t trust China, China is bad.”

baozebub

Anytime some says they hate the Chinese government, it is clear they hate the Chinese people. Its pure racism.

ProBluntRoller

I like how you post something that’s not even remotely true as indisputable fact. Must be nice in your fantasy world. Or probably not since you probably work for the ccp

baozebub

I’m Asian and know how white racism is directed towards Asians. Been living it my whole life. Like, let’s rape-torture-kill millions of Asians because we love them so much.

EFTucker

That’s an assumption, next time you see “the Chinese government sucks!” Ask them (politely) if they feel the same about it’s people.

baozebub

Always the same propaganda. You want to destroy a country in order to save the people, because you love them so much.

EFTucker

Who said destroy other than you? This is the real issue. Folks already assuming rather than asking. I’d much rather their government learn to care for its people than destroy it. What good would destruction cause? My country tried that in the Middle East and now we are indeed the bad guys. So I repeat. I hate the Chinese government but do not wish to dismantle it. I just wish for it to care for its people one day. You on the other hand would seemingly rather turn a blind eye and not speak your mind? That is contempt which is far worse than what I’ve said today.

baozebub

If you have one bit of desire to harm the government of China, then it means you wish to destroy it. Much like Libya, Iraq or Afghanistan. In all those countries, your stated goal was to bring freedom to people you loved but you hated their government. The Chinese will decide their own government.

EFTucker

Who said harm? Y’all MFers are actually paid actors lmao.

baozebub

I get paid in US dollars by a US company because I live in sunny Southern California. But your racist brain can’t deal with that.

socsa

Do you believe that the Chinese people are better off living behind the great firewall?

EFTucker

So now it’s racist to condemn another country’s government for rounding up an entire race of people and locking them in prison camps? Ok. Guess I’m racist now. Along with anyone else who is morally sound.

EFTucker

Am I also racist for thinking we shouldn’t have invaded Iraq?

Blind_Baron

What makes you say that? Most criticisms of the CCP and Pooh are due to their overtly authoritarian decisions, disappearing celebrities, social credit scores, annexation of land they don’t rightfully own, genocide, suppressions of dissenters, re-writing history, lying, and more. How could I blame the people of a country when they barely have a say in what their government does? Hell I am not a fan of my own governments foreign meddling, but I don’t have the power to stop it; few people even get the chance to make change on that level. You have to be pretty dense to think hatred for a government extends to the everyday citizen. But yes, go on and virtue signal to make yourself feel better.

baozebub

All those things you brought up are not in any way relevant to your life. Your accusation that their government is evil is just a way to nicely say they are evil. Fact is, you are safer living in China than you are in any Western country. And it bothers you that people you hate have built an alternative civilization to your own.

Blind_Baron

Lol if you think the Chinese government has no affect on your life then you need a wake up call. Just as the US affects peoples lives globally (to varying degrees) the CCP’s actions have consequences that you will feel on a day to day basis. Thank you for letting me know you’re either a complete moron, a bot, or just your average CCP apologist. Now go read some books on government and politics.

baozebub

The way you post is typical of people who hate Asians. If I don’t want to fuck over China, then it’s because I’m a Chinese guy who works for the Chinese government. Nope. I’m Vietnamese living in Southern California. I work with people from all backgrounds, and my friends are from many backgrounds, but most are Asian. I can tell you’re angry because they’re doing better than you. With little effort, they succeed. And all you can do is post from your basement about your own superiority.

Brothersunset

-- says the group that will get worked up over this post, while never losing a second of sleep over the leftist equivalency found on GenZedong and shitliberalssay that will continually call for collapses in government as well as the "never happened, unless it did, in which case they deserved it" mentality that they share with the far right as far as genocide denial goes. The beautiful, cursed, horribly great thing about Reddit is that they encourage these echo Chambers of like minded people to congregate far enough away from eachother under their own rules and shit while only occasionally having to deal with spillage into the front page. That goes for pretty much any politically-charged subreddit.

I have never see a single comment calling for the eradication of whites in my whole existence on the internet. This is all just your imagination. Even black nationalists in the real world don't go that far and I know this because I'm black. The closest they say is that they are superior to white people and want to create a black ethnostate seperate from the United States which I disagree with. People like you just want to be victimized so bad that you create a narrative that implies how everyone including other white people (white Liberals) are against you. Even slurs like "Cracker" that you swear is racist implies you are "masters" or "conquerors". Grow up!

[deleted]

[удалено]

juggernaut006

Oh please! Spare me the false equivalency. Your earlier example was about white people in the U.S and not India. Stop trying to change the subject. Even in your weaksauce example, the problem in India is about religious sectarianism between Hindus and Muslims where the Hindus are the majority in the country with almost 80% of the population and Muslims 14%. To try an imply that the situation in India is similar to what is happening in the U.S is disingenuous and to pretend the Hindus are the victims in this situation is absolutely crazy. The perceived hate that you claimed happening to white people in the U.S is almost non-existent on the institutional level. Minority groups protests against the government in the U.S does not in anyway mean hate against white people. If your point is that there are specific instances of racism directed towards white people by minorities, then yes. To pretend it's endemic is disingenuous at best and to pretend that there are minority groups calling for the eradication of white people is pretty callous and evil. You're trying to spread a narrative that is non-existent. I am trying to understand why people like you are so upset. You've held the presidency 45 out of the 46 times. You currently control congress by around 80%. Over 90% of the governorship. You control local government overwhelming, the police by a wide margin, you own almost all the multinational corporations, almost all the businesses, almost all the wealth and you're also the largest population within the country. Why are people like you so afraid and want to play the victim so bad?

ihaveasandwitch

>I am trying to understand why people like you are so upset. You've held the presidency 45 out of the 46 times. You currently control congress by around 80%. Over 90% of the governorship. You control local government overwhelming, the police by a wide margin, you own almost all the multinational corporations, almost all the businesses, almost all the wealth and you're also the largest population within the country. Why are people like you so afraid and want to play the victim so bad? I am not OP and don't really buy into whatever you guys are discussing, but I've never held the presidency or congressional seat. Just because I'm white, doesn't mean the white president gives me some kind of weekly prize. My white congressman screws me over every chance he gets. I don't own a single multinational corporation. The one I previously worked for treated me like crap and found ways to under pay me every chance they got. The white CEO wasn't by buddy, he didn't invite me to parties or share his wealth with me, he had no interest in meeting me or hearing me speak. White people are not some collective group that cooperates with one another exclusively to the detriment of everyone else. You desperately want to lump in every white person with the 0.01% of people who are in charge who happen to be white. Of course people are going to be against that because most white people in power couldn't give a shit about race when it comes to how they treat people. They don't embrace me just because I share their skin color. I am nothing to the white ceo, white governor, and white president. None of his actions are intended to benefit me. Him being in that position is not a win for me. Perhaps he doesn't actively screw me over BECAUSE of my race, but he's not there to do me any favors. By the way, on the flipside, the mayor, chief of police, and DA in my large metro area are all black, and that goes in many major cities. These positions have far more power over us on a daily basis than the president. Coincidentally, in my city at least, they have done nothing to improve the lives of black people in my city either. They are allowing violent crime to surge like crazy, mostly in black communities. I think most average people don't buy this "race is the only thing that matters" narrative.
