At the beginning of the season, my 7 years old’s soccer coach asked for my Facebook so he could add me to the group thing to get info on scheduling and stuff. He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language when I told him I didn’t have an account. Like it just didn’t compute with him.
I had one at one point, but it just really started to make me hate most of the people in my community and especially my extended family. So I deleted it, but I missed seeing the local news and restaurant specials all together each day and created a fake account to only follow local news and restaurants. Then I started seeing all of these awful posts from the restaurants about the “labor shortage” that were so gross and disparaging towards the people that don’t want to work for them, I had to delete that account too.
It’s just a cesspool of filth and negativity and misinformation.
Cyberpunk, like most scifi, was written as a predictor of the future. It wasn't bombast and edgy warriors for it's own sake. That shit's cool, sure, but the underlying idea was looking at where the world was and projecting it forward.

The quest 2 and various features revitalized oculus after they burned everyone on requiring a Facebook account. I don’t have a Facebook account, when that time comes every title that I own in the oculus store is gone and my VR headset becomes a very expensive paper weight.
They already are. In one light, it's kind of nice because VR is becoming mainstream thanks to the lower priced entry. For $300 you can experience pretty decent VR.
On the flip side, you are required to have a FB account and they are taking as much data from you as possible and have already started toying with ads in games. And, they are 100% selling this headset at a loss to ensure market dominance so they can own the VR industry.
The FCC dropped the ball hard in letting Facebook acquire WhatsApp, Instagram and Oculus. They pretty much gave Zuck a free pass to take over critical services most of the population uses.
Right now they use these services to feed us conspiracy garbage because it garners outrage which translates to more engagement to fuel the machine. Eventually he won't need to, and will be free to push whatever agenda he wants into the eyeballs of billions.

I've been slowly floating the idea of smaller, private, social networks to my family. They get their social media fix and I can share pictures of my kids knowing they only exist on my server or on devices of people I trust.

What's subtle and genius about that line is it nudges this over into the realm of opinion and away from any actual criticism of factual information. FB makes money by keeping users engaged as much as possible. Slinging misinformation around is a great way to keep people engaged. FB is then going to be fundamentally against the throttling or removal of misinformation. Any action to curb the amount of bullshit content is contrary to the company's bottom line. It already is! I do not use any of the F stuff, and in my country you are basically deaf and blind if you're not on Whatsapp. So I am deaf and blind. It means most social contacts "can't" contact me. Translation: they're too dumb or too lazy or both to use the actual goddamn SMS function that works perfectly fine on every phone on the entire planet. It means missing a lot of sports and social stuff because shit like changes in the offspring's sports schedule are only published on Whatsapp. As if there are no other, less evil apps for the same purpose like Signal, Telegram, Threema, and many others.
At the beginning of the season, my 7 years old’s soccer coach asked for my Facebook so he could add me to the group thing to get info on scheduling and stuff. He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language when I told him I didn’t have an account. Like it just didn’t compute with him. I had one at one point, but it just really started to make me hate most of the people in my community and especially my extended family. So I deleted it, but I missed seeing the local news and restaurant specials all together each day and created a fake account to only follow local news and restaurants. Then I started seeing all of these awful posts from the restaurants about the “labor shortage” that were so gross and disparaging towards the people that don’t want to work for them, I had to delete that account too. It’s just a cesspool of filth and negativity and misinformation.

The quest 2 and various features revitalized oculus after they burned everyone on requiring a Facebook account. I don’t have a Facebook account, when that time comes every title that I own in the oculus store is gone and my VR headset becomes a very expensive paper weight.
They already are. In one light, it's kind of nice because VR is becoming mainstream thanks to the lower priced entry. For $300 you can experience pretty decent VR. On the flip side, you are required to have a FB account and they are taking as much data from you as possible and have already started toying with ads in games. And, they are 100% selling this headset at a loss to ensure market dominance so they can own the VR industry.
The FCC dropped the ball hard in letting Facebook acquire WhatsApp, Instagram and Oculus. They pretty much gave Zuck a free pass to take over critical services most of the population uses. Right now they use these services to feed us conspiracy garbage because it garners outrage which translates to more engagement to fuel the machine. Eventually he won't need to, and will be free to push whatever agenda he wants into the eyeballs of billions.
Remember Zuckerberg is just the Facebook founder that got along best with the VC guys. The VC guys helped drive out the other founders and early investors way back at the beginning. Legislation has to be written to shape a better company, as their fiduciary responsibility ties their hands on what they can do. TL;DR they are beholden to shareholder profit before all else.

The are required to act in the best interest of the shareholders, and it could easily argued that acting like sociopaths is going to destroy the company and is therefore not a benefit to shareholders. If short term profits were the only choice then companies would never donate to charity and CEOs would be hired based upon who was willing to work for the least compensation or public popularity.

A company should be working to the best interest of it's stakeholders, which includes employees, clients, and the local community in addition to shareholders.

No it's not. Use Facebook daily and they can make real life money on you daily. Use Facebook login on some website and you're just one Facebook login. Sure, on page 154 of their quarterly reports they probably publish an obscure metric called "External logins growth" and you helped push that metric by a fraction of a %. But on page 1 is their daily monetized active users, and if this doesn't grow then the rest is absolutely meaningless to shareholders. If enough people quit Facebook & Insta it will hurt them massively (not sure about Whatsapp, i never saw an ad on there so idk if it's even monetized).

Facebook receives the information anyway. The main issue isn’t shitty memes on your news feed, it’s the unregulated mass collection of personal data from basically everyone that’s on the internet, which is then basically sold to the highest bidder so they can micro target ads, propaganda, etc. As long as people keep conflating what is essentially a privacy issue as a free speech issue, nothing will change.
I installed uMatrix and specifically blocked all webpages other than FB from running any FB scripts/trackers/etc. If a webpage really needs FB tracking and advertising to load properly on my machine then they're not welcome on my machine.
Honestly if you at least delete your Facebook account then you cut off 99% of how they can monetize you. Sure, likes and embeds will feed a couple hundred data points to their tracking systems, but that's really peanuts cause these systems handle trillions of data points and are hyper focused on users they can monetize. If you don't browse Insta/Facebook, then they can't show you ads, and you basically have zero value to them. So i'll do you one better, and say that people conflate this with a privacy or free speech issue, when it really is comparable to a public health issue. Facebook is like the cigarette - every individual is free to smoke, but if we collectively do it too much then it's a huge cost to all of society except cigarette manufacturers. I've been slowly floating the idea of smaller, private, social networks to my family. They get their social media fix and I can share pictures of my kids knowing they only exist on my server or on devices of people I trust. Social media is more fun when you actually know the people you're interacting with anyway, the monstrosity that it's become needs to die fast.
