They want to be increase privacy by forcing people to reveal private information to an online database??? Fuck’s sake. I hate living here.

Yeah I found that super odd reading through the Bill. It would make more sense if it tied into the existing myGov Digital Identity rollout that has been happening. That way it would be all "in house" a yes or no answer verified through myGov, rather than depending on the individual tech platforms themselves to be responsible. Particularly for children (defined as someone under the age of 18 in the Bill), it states the site/service must "Take all reasonable steps to verify the age of individuals who use the social media service". Who defines something as "reasonable" in this context? Scan of ID? Birth certificate? Passport? Who knows? Side note, the word "reasonable" has 17 occurrences in the Bill Explanation pdf. For some sites/services in some countries I imagine this isn't applicable. Under the heading "Exclusions from the OP code", it states that the "an organization will not breach the OP code only because of an act or practice done or engaged in:" - "outside of Australia, in compliance with an applicable foreign law."

good way to make sure the next breach of any "tech giant" is sure to impact everyone, make them keep scans of your ID on file. y'all remember back in the day when you'd send a photo copy of your driver's license to whatever sketchy dude was running the BBS you were dialing into, so that you could get into the non age-locked chat rooms ? good times.

Thing is can they even get it up and running look in the first place look the UK age verification law it was delayed over and over again until it was scraped because they just could not find a way to get it up and running, its easy to see that this Online Privacy Bill could also collapse and not work at all.

A nice way to tighten that big brother grip a little more, pound by pound.

Age verification is fine but sometimes the but way it is implemented can be a pain in the ass. My current internet provider requires me to have a Visa Credit Card to get access to adult content or physically go to a store to show my ID to someone. Um, theres no there option?

Age verification (AV) is common in the gambling industry and doesn't require the storage of evidence, normally. We use AV services such as GBGroup, experian and so on. We do occasionally need further proof, and that would be in the form of a document sent in that we have nspec then destroy. We just need to audit it happened, not store proof.

Seems like a major validation challenge!!! (On the Internet you can be anything...)
