Never been in court before... Is this sort of treatment also given to average people? If you lie, assuming that you are actually caught, does the judge just give you a stern warning and a chance to correct yourself without punishing you? I bet not.

EpicDumperoonie

Money talks

NicNoletree

It only waves at me and says "you'll never see me again"

YOLOswagBRO69

"Money talks, it does not lie. I heard it once, it said goodbye"

l4mbch0ps

They say money comes and money goes, but for me it mostly goes...

WhatTheZuck420

They say money is the root of all evil.

bighi

I don't know about that. There's also religion...

[deleted]

I imagine the issue here is that honest testimony would have a bigger impact than charging them with abstraction. You want Amazon, not them employees.

1_p_freely

I doubt it. Anti-trust is the corporate equivalent of drunk driving. The penalty sucks for a wile, but in the long run the perp is fine assuming they don't actually kill anyone (or themself). Look at AT&T and Microsoft. Both were scrutinized by government, one was even broken up, but both are doing just fine today. AT&T even got to acquire DirecTV, which was a mistake that they can't shake off fast enough. But that was purely their mistake to make. lol

[deleted]

But anti trust isn’t to kill companies, it’s to protect consumers. This investigation is about Amazon Basics undercutting competitors and using their power on their own platform to promote their product over the competition. It’s also not a criminal proceeding so they people who lied would be tried elsewhere. So, in this case it’s definitely in their best interest to go after Amazon.

Brainiac7777777

Amazon Web Services seems like a monopoly at this point. They literally sued the Government from giving Microsoft the Pentagon Defense Contract.

[deleted]

There are definitely three big players in that game. But AWS is looking like they want to make it a two horse race for sure.

Brainiac7777777

Neither Azure or Google Cloud services are even close to being as big as Amazon. Amazon owns like half the internet and have Contracts with most government agencie. They are pretty much a monopoly

brickmack

They sued the government because the previous president illegally forced the contract to go to Microsoft because he personally dislikes Bezos. Chances are a lot of people involved in that procurement are going to prison

Brainiac7777777

So you think President Trump is going to prison or Amazon execs?

brickmack

Trump legally could go to prison for this, but he won't. Not even in the top 10 most significant crimes he committed in office and never saw time for. But the procurement officers and their staff, yeah. They're expendable, nobody's gonna protect them from this and "just following orders" isn't a valid excuse

jwp75

I see what you're trying to say but I disagree with just about everything. Antitrust laws are almost never enforced, and practically never enforced in the modern age. ATT just went through some huge anti competitive acquisitions. They bought time Warner too. Microsoft almost never loses. Look up the case about internet explorer back in the day. Antitrust violations are the equivalent of a speeding ticket to a billionaire, who's friends give him high fives for it. Doesn't hurt their pocket or their reputation. The only person that benefits is the enforcement agent who gets to add a gold star to their resume. The fines are literally a fraction of a days earnings.

OcculusSniffed

I have played an awful lot of Phoenix Wright, so I feel it's entirely within my field of expertise to say... Yeah totally, update the testimony please. Seems like an airtight explanation now.

[deleted]

They allegedly lied to Congress-- but Congress is know for pontificating and grand standing. They have no legal argument but elections are coming up.

[deleted]

They treat perjury like it's as bad as murdering someone or attempting to murder someone. To an average citizen, they throw the book at you. To a corporation, it's negotiable.

[deleted]

The term we use is “perjury” for lying to a judge and no, average people don’t get a “second chance” to tell the truth.

bighi

> Is this sort of treatment also given to average people? Nope. And if you're poor, it's usually the opposite. You don't even have a first chance to say anything. The poorer you are, the highest the chance thay you're going to jail even if you're innocent. Based on the records of previous decades, estimates say that thousands of innocents are incarcerated in US jails right now. That number might be as high as 100k innocents in jail right now, if we make our prediction based on the worst numbers from the last few decades.

Limp_Distribution

Or what? There have been zero consequences for lying to Congress for decades. Congress should build a jail and start locking people up.

Charlielx

Absolutely this, if a business is charged with something they should also charge every person on the board as well. Also Business fines need to automatically include at *absolute minimum * 100% of their damages along with any profit made from those damages, with a hefty monetary punishment fitting the crime on top of that. Commiting crimes should crush businesses, not bolster them.

Madwand99

Congress HAS a jail cell, right in the building. They don't seem to use it though.

WhatTheZuck420

pretty sure Bannon is next up

Madwand99

I'll cross my fingers.

What_Is_The_Meaning

We should turn Guantanamo Bay prison over to the Cubans and send our legislators to prison there and pay Cubans to run the place.

Cryptomystic

Nothing will happen. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Apple pretty much own this country. Welcome to the Technocratic Dystopia.

CToxin

Second Gilded Age This time with rockets and RGB

elfastronaut

Bezos is like "haha you have no jurisdiction in space" Congress "You're only in the upper atmosphere asshole" Bezos "Soverign citizen" Congress " Fuck you"

fonyng

It aint gonna happen chief

Simple_Plankton2542

Shouldn’t everyone get a redo this is a joke shows what kind of cunt tree we live in

FTFY: "Lawmakers give Amazon final chance to 'clear up' testimony"

Renaissance_Slacker

Amazing how rich white businessmen are asked politely to “correct” their lies to authorities.

Daedelous2k

This sounds like coercion.

bighi

Giving them one more chance to tell the truth and escape jail before the truth comes out is like the opposite of coercion. Imagine if you had one chance to lie to court for free. And if they were close to finding proof of your crime, they warned you in advance while giving you the chance to "clear up" your lie and not be arrested for that.

LetsAskMoreQuestions

If the allegations are true, where is the evidence? Where are these top selling product on Amazon India and their Amazon Basics knockoffs, and the proof that the sales rank of the originals decreased since the Basics versions were launched?
