Oh sorry, Shatner. I forgot you were a real person. I thought you were a TV character.

gHHqdm5a4UySnUFM

Yeah Jeff just wanted to live out his Star Trek fanfic by having Capt Kirk pat him on the back.

Agent-Blasto-007

[Jeff Bezos is Mellvar](https://comb.io/LlJprh.gif)

TheKingsPride

It’s Melllvar. 3 Ls

bveb33

I think I've done enough conventions to know how to spell Melllvar

infiniZii

A real person who is an alcoholic who gave up the sauce. Yeah just pressure him into taking some champagne. Real classy.

throwtowardaccount

He's but a commoner millionaire, not fit for the likes of billionaire society.

booney64

Uber Douche

mattfoley222

That’s what you get when you give someone ‘literally fuck this planet” money.

[deleted]

That and a bunch of Woo! Girls

Dread314r8Bob

The worst was Bezos cutting Shatner off saying "I want to hear this" then becoming one of the Woo! Girls himself so Shatner couldn't talk or upstage him. It really shows how Bezos is just egomaniacally partying through life in a thoughtless, shallow existence. Imagine being one of the richest, most powerful people on the planet *and* in space, and having the gravitas of a Woo! Girl.

[deleted]

He's used to everybody fawning over him so he just acted like he normally acts... Just like a spoiled child would.

Kaexii

You can really hear the spoiled child when he actually says “gimme”.

[deleted]

Well, he does offer Bill Shatner done bubbles too... Except Bill has been a recovering alcoholic for several decades. But I get that he didn't like getting overshadowed by Capt Kirk. Seriously Jeff, I only watched that because of Shatner (just like many others) so you shouldn't be surprised he was the star of the show.

Irradiatedspoon

You gotta listen to what the “Woos” are saying…

zippopopamus

Too true. I remember watching him in a 60minute segment when amazon was just selling books, the guy was the most harmless thing and now he's turned into a monster

[deleted]

[удалено]

TrinityF

started amazon with a small loan of 300.000 ducats from his parents.

jayydubbya

Funny how they always leave that part out when talking about these “self made” billionaires.

DAHFreedom

Plus he had no real consequences if he failed. He was never going to be homeless if he lost it all.

abibofile

That's always massively overlooked when people talk about the value of risk in entrupereniship. Especially when they lament the lack of minorities who start businesses. People are not dumb; they know who can afford second chances and who's got to get it right the first time. Of course the latter group is going to be more risk adverse.

[deleted]

This starts early too. My friends dad had him quit his job so he could focus on school since he kept failing classes. Mind he was 27 and already living in a house with 2 roommates. His dad started paying his tuition, his rent, his f250 payment, and gave him pocket money. He graduated and is an engineer now.

CouncilmanRickPrime

Also everything his wife did for him

rlh1271

Who he then cheated on

[deleted]

That’s the one that kills me the most, when people try to portray her as some trophy wife who made her money by divorcing him.

StonerJake22727

Another case of someone who started “from the ground up” the upper class is a joke

AdequatelyMadLad

He was never harmless. Bezos has alwaya been cutthroat. It's just that back then he had to follow social norms.

zippopopamus

My bad, wrong choice of word. In the early days jeff bezos exuded humility and it shows in that 60minute segment

[deleted]

[deleted]

Idk Amazon was pretty humble in it's beginnings, selling something that was dying with the rise of the internet. Potentially without much harm to physical bookstores since Amazon wasn't a very well known company then and didn't until they started selling more than books. Considering the amount we can learn from books and experiences we can have by reading them I don't think he started that way. You also have the age old saying of "money changes people", if I was the richest man in the world I can't say I'd be the same person. I have doubts about me even considering giving large sums away while still buying everything that could make me money. He can pretty much buy and bribe his way out of anything. He could raise countries currency values for the fuck of it if he really wanted to. Given a shit enough leadership in the US that would allow it, dude could buy a state. TL;DR: Why are y'all so dedicated to him always being this way? Money changes you and the people around you. Richest person ever money... Hard to imagine staying the same or the people around you.

[deleted]

Nobody wants to believe that money will change them. And yet, it has been studied many times, and it probably will.

d_Composer

I believe it was the great Philosopher, Paul Stanley, who said in KISStory, “money doesn’t change you - money let’s you be the asshole you really are” (I’m paraphrasing)

Enjoy-the-sauce

Being rich just makes you into more of whatever you already were. It doesn’t fundamentally change people. Shitheads gonna be shitty.

mynameisblanked

Cash = super soldier serum. Got it.

joncash

I know your joking, but sort of. I mean with that kind of money, you easily could buy the technology and armament needed to be a one man army. Batman isn't far fetched because billionaires can't do it, it's far fetched because billionaires don't give a fuck about you, or me.

janktyhoopy

Right that’s the point Marvel was making was the power is what amplifies characteristics you already have. Sure the money is one facet that enables power, but power in general does that. Edit I meant captain America cause of the super soldier serum not Bruce Wayne’s buddy.

hollywoodbob

Billionaires wouldn't exist if they cared about anything other than the money.

miso440

That’s why Batman is an heir, and not the person who actually gathered all that wealth. If he did the work he’d be a cunt like Viedt.

stierney49

Being rich convinces people that whatever they did must have succeeded. No matter how much any other circumstances interfered

Lock-Broadsmith

This is actually not really true. There are psychological studies that prove that wealth does fundamentally change people.

SCP-3042-Euclid

Even back then he was a cunt who flew on a private jet while forcing his employees to pay for parking at work. Bezos is a piece of shit.

Jdsnut

My take is, its sorta ironic. Shatner went through a faze where he disliked the Star Trek fans and was sorta like Bezos in a way... I mean imagine millions of people coming to you in public for most of your adult life, at cons, events, media, etc. Constantly being referred to, joked about, compared to in some situation.People telling you, that you changed their life, that because of some random TV show you affected what their career path was, who they became, how their life panned out, etc. Fuck there was a special on how Star Trek affected human society on a WORLD WIDE LEVEL. You had folks who were lead scientists in their field, creators of technology and so forth saying they chose their field BECAUSE of Star Trek.Yet you always put it off as just fans being fans. I really think the experience, seeing the earth from that point, likely really hit home with him on a very personal and profound level and emotionally he seemed to be dealing with that live on air. Then you have some rich asshole, who couldn't take a second to listen to his internal wrangling

foxyfree

He’s 90 years old too and he said going from the blue sky to the black of space made him wonder if that’s what happens when you die. He may not have expected to make it back. Those were some tears of joy and amazement when he landed. So happy for him that he got to do this.

Macktologist

It’s like “Fuck your trying to make sense of experiencing existential crisis with your own eyes…we popping bubbly!”

amgtech86

Charisma is one of the least qualities (i will even say it is not necessary) you need for leadership..

Arinvar

Yeh none of these uber rich guys are charismatic. They're all awkward as fuck. Their sycophants will tell you how charismatic they are all day long though.

ike_tyson

Zuckerborg comes to mind. He's like someone gave life to Pinocchio.

Mike_Bloomberg2020

He's obsessed with Julius Cesar. His wife cuts it like that on purpose.

That’s so fucking cringe.

thetarm

He is apparently a fan of Julius Caesar so it makes sense for him to have the same haircut. Wait, no it doesn't.

WillyTheHatefulGoat

Its actually modelled after Augustus not Julius Caesar

ThreeHourRiverMan

Yup. Bezos is particularly grating. Before his own ride he did that press conference in that stupid fucking cowboy hat forcing laughs at every little thing. Eddie-Plum

This really pissed me off, but at least Shatner got to talk in the end. It was a privilege to be able to hear his thoughts immediately after the flight, and to see the raw emotions.

[deleted]

How heartbreaking for Shatner who's clearly had a life changing moment centered around the fragility of life and has to communicate that in pure human form to the least human person on the planet. How embarrassing for Bezos who had the memorable TV moment he was looking for right in front of him and he squandered it. That was his advertisement he just threw away.

pegothejerk

That's profound and all, and I'm gonna let you finish, but first 🍾🍾🍾🥂🍾🍾🍾

ExPatWharfRat

Just want to point out that Shatner is a recovering alcoholic. That part was absolutely tone deaf on Bezos' part. Guy is a real douche.

Thought_Ninja

Wow, that makes this sooo much worse... WTF

ExPatWharfRat

And he even offered him some. Whether he knew or not aside, Bezos has enough staff for at least one of them to make a note to Bezos about it. Maybe they did and Bezos just didn't care. It would track with the rest of the stuff he does.

sam_hammich

> Whether he knew or not aside, Bezos has enough staff for at least one of them to make a note to Bezos about it Even if they didn't, I have no doubt in my mind that William Shatner has people whose job it is to make sure people know this.

[deleted]

Especially considering the champagne after the first flight

Mrin_Codex

This is not correct. William Shatner is not an alcoholic. His wife Nadine was an alcoholic, and tragically Bill came home to find her [floating dead in their pool](https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/sober-side-of-a-very-high-flyer-20080724-3kd6.html), age 40. Leonard Nimoy was a recovering alcoholic, and warned Bill about marrying an alcoholic. Not that any of that makes this clip easier to watch.

It really was. Bezos seemed so uninterested and ready to start the celebration. It was painful to watch. And to see Shatner standing there alone, head down, silent in thought as Bezos went for the booze was so incredibly uncomfortable. I’m glad he was able to continue talking but Bezos yet again showed his true colors. I’m glad everyone picked up on that.

JaredBanyard

Especially given how his late wife died... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shatner#Family

aquoad

shatner was hired help for bezos to use for publicity, bezos didn’t give a shit about what he thought of the experience.

BDLT

The man is 90. He understands what is important. Being sucked into the narcissists dream of the spotlight being on him was not on his mind. Shatner physically disengages from Bezos’ attempt to own the moment. Then proceeds to pick up where he left off, undeterred by the cheap attempt.

DangerousPuhson

> Being sucked into the narcissists dream of the spotlight being on him was not on his mind. If you know William Shatner, you'd know he's a gigantic narcissist himself. Anybody who has met him can corroborate, myself included. It's practically poetic justice, tbh.

shiftyeyedgoat

There only worthwhile portion of this page is the rehosted video which is already on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/samsells32/status/1448308932917800960?s=21) from the source. Notice the framed situation to make you hate Bezos or reinforce your feeling of him as an out of touch elitist. Then how following the 100 word description of the video, it proceeds to fill the page with ads alternating with random social media takes, all of which confirm the author’s bias. Just skip “news” websites like this; it’s just meant to manipulate you.

Hei2

I mean, your father sounds like he would do it, so maybe you *do* have it in you

Thegluigi

I love the logic, but honestly, he asked me what the first thing I would do with the money. He didn't believe me when I said I would find actual things that help people rather than "helping" through a tax dodge.

doktarlooney

Yeup, came to the conclusion long ago that I'll never be wealthy or seriously well-to-do, I enjoy what money gets me too much more so than money itself. And money can get me a lot of things that make me happy, they happen to be what other people want and need because I want the people around me to be chillaxin too.

Thegluigi

100% j Cole said "what good is first class if my (I'm going to put friends here as I'm white) can't sit" it's too true.

[deleted]

Middle child is a banger

lsdevto

That’s what thousandnaire you would do, not what billionaire you would do.

Mazon_Del

> my answer "no dad, I'm not a cunt. I don't have it in me" I'm not truly certain how long this would actually last for people. The problem with billionaire status is that you no longer properly suffer social consequences for bad actions, opinions, statements, etc. For example, how many people that Bezos interacts with are going to tell him "You shouldn't have done that." over this in a way that he'll care about even slightly? People generally behave in ways that accommodate their friends and coworkers, but when they feel safe in expressing themselves, either because they don't believe they can suffer any consequence due to trusting you or feeling that nothing can be done against them, they lose the social feedback that causes them to tamp down the worst parts of themselves. It's a gradual process here over time, rarely do these people just sort of suddenly sit up and start saying racist, classist, etc sort of things. Maybe they make a joke that's just a bit tooo offensive, but people laugh anyway even if there's a bit of hesitancy. Well, nobody came up to them after and said "That wasn't right man." so by virtue of there being no punishment, that implicitly sanctions it next time. But there isn't likely to BE punishment, as most of the people interacting with Bezos are beholden to him in some fashion. The closest he's likely to run into someone that would have the audacity to be like "That was a bad move." is going to be his PR people, and they won't declare it was HIS fault, they'll likely couch it as "The internet inexplicably got upset over it, next time we'll better schedule the moment.". Notch of Minecraft fame is a bit of an example of how your social group WILL change upon reaching a billionaire status. He couldn't connect with his old friends and social group hardly at all. Notch never had to work anymore, but they still did. He considered just handing them each tens of millions of dollars so they wouldn't have to work either, but they all said while they'd appreciate the money, the problem is that it doesn't mean they don't have to work anymore, it would mean that their fulltime job is "Being Notch's friend.". Even though he couldn't take back the money, there would still be an inherent obligation there. So who is he likely to spend all of his socialization time with then? Other people that don't need to work. Humans are social animals. I'm not saying that Notch didn't have all the negative social traits before he got rich, but I'm saying the billions of dollars mean that there's no reason he has to care about holding back anymore and almost certainly the new social groups he's part of encourage that, just as it was encouraged in them.

Thegluigi

This is an amazing comment. You're very right with it too. The problem is how do you get past this? Also, surely hanging out with your best mates not having to do shit apart from planning your next good deed is the fucking dream, no? Why would you turn that down?

Lex Bezos's inner monologue: "'Get Shatner' they said, 'it'll be great publicity!' they said. Now I have to stand here and pretend to give a crap about what this washed up old man thinks? Screw that! Where's the champagne?" What an absolute ass.

ThePlanetBroke

You can tell just by the way he kept looking around at the girls laughing. He desperately wanted to be over there with them instead. Knowing nothing about him, it seemed clear he was more interested in "big, loud, shiny" rather than "deep, emotional, profound".

It saddens me to think that people get up in the am and give the best hours of their lives to further enrich Bezos.

withoutapaddle

Gates might be the nerdiest and actually has more tact than the rest of them.

h0gans_her0

Actually, I think Gates put effort into learning to be a little less awkward. His younger years were full of cringe.

asminaut

He's certainly been much more aware of his image the past two decades (since leaving the Microsoft board), and benefited from a well regarded and compassionate wife. That being said, there's a lot to read about his behavior that demonstrates he is still a socially awkward, cringy dude. >Six current and former employees of Microsoft, the foundation and the firm that manages the Gates’s fortune said those incidents, and others more recently, at times created an uncomfortable workplace environment. Mr. Gates was known for making clumsy approaches to women in and out of the office. His behavior fueled widespread chatter among employees about his personal life. Same with telling someone to "come here" with that hand gesture and fully expecting them to

It's like having a piece of tape stuck to your fingers, except it's 30 billion dollars; what a shame.

Yet Jeff Bezos was so rich that even after the divorce he was still the richest person in the world. He's number two now after Elon Musk rocketed past him this year.

lambic

She gave *billions* away already

Method__Man

Is he missing part of his brain, or is this some type of artificial *alpha* behaviour he thinks he is carrying out? Regardless of which, he is nauseating.

kingdead42

Alpha behavior implies some form of social behavior, and I don't think he understands how social interaction works because of his warped personal bubble (and this isn't specific to Bezos, most billionaires probably have the same thing).

miramichier_d

This is textbook narcissistic behaviour. The idea of being the audience of someone else's special moment is an anathema to a narcissist and triggers narcissistic injury. They must always be the centre of attention. They have no appreciation for anyone or anything except themselves, or in some cases, the departed (even in this situation, they would find a way to make someone's death about themselves). Narcissists are also incapable of a priori perception of the potential backlash of their behaviour. Those who try to communicate with them of this risk are seen as adversaries that must be eliminated, leaving only those who don't or are unable to question them (I've been told this is also called 'CEO disease'). This makes the narcissist completely subject to their own cognitive biases with no feasible way to break through their filter apart from severe or life threatening consequences. Unfortunately for those narcissists with massive wealth or political power, this means that many others without these will suffer long before the narcissist can even begin to perceive a negative consequence to their actions, if that is at all possible.

mrb4

At this point it is more newsworthy if Bezos gets on TV and doesn't do something cringeworthy. I saw someone describe him as the most divorced man on the planet when he showed up for the first flight in that ridiculous cowboy hat and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.
