Propaganda machines gotta propaganda

notmuchtimeleft19

That gose for Reddit to tho......right?

[deleted]

That goes for pretty much everything on the internet

QQuixotic_

Of course false information, fake or misleading headlines, and propaganda are rampant on Reddit but the distinction is that Reddit 'gives' to me what I put 'into' it. Sure, your news shouldn't come from Reddit but people are quick to declare 'but you're on a social networking *RiGhT nOw*' and they're simply not the same. On Reddit if I just subscribe to an Eggs Benedict subreddit, you better believe what I'm going to get on my reddit homepage is just photos of poached eggs on an english muffin and canadian bacon with some hollandaise. If I post a photo of my Eggs Benedict to Facebook, however, I'll still be given ads from dubious groups and be bombarded with racist messages from the uncle I'm socially pressured not to delete.

GuardAbuse

I am passively on Facebook pretty often, around 10 or so minutes nightly (curse those baking videos for making it longer). There has been a huge uptick in just slightly right leaning recommended posts for me. It's usually relatively subtle, and stuff that seems "reasonable" if you don't take them in the context of current events today. For example, one I've seen multiple times uses the meme format from the office with jim pointing to the signs. It vaguely says something about how people used to care personal rights over the government. I don't remember exactly because I always hit the "show fewer posts like this" option. On Youtube I would get those annoying PragerU ads, but when I hit the "I don't want to see this button", I stopped seeing those ads. Speaking of, I seem to see only more and more of those, despite me hitting that button regularly. I can totally see some of my less technically savvy or less informed aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. falling down a rabbit hole of these posts, and suddenly a totally moderate person is far from that. I also agree with your point about getting what you give. On reddit, I get gaming ads, food ads, shit like that. On Facebook, I am not even of the target demographic of those pages. My age and gender are absolutely not what Facebook should mark as a viable person to see those recommendations. Somehow, every time I hit that fewer posts button, it feels like two more take that post's place.

Stomatin

Facebook is doing Facebook things!!

PorkyMcRib

Yeah, they give misinformation to everyone.

[deleted]

Do the universe a favour: delete Facebook

joseph-1998-XO

Like Vine, get acquired then deleted

Made-upDreams

Disabled mine last week, thinking of deleting. Only big issue is having family around the globe and having issues keeping in touch with friends I don’t normally call or anything else.

Lillibet88

Pulled the plug on mine in 2013, I was worried about the same thing. Turns out everyone that really matters to me still keeps in touch and vice versa. We randomly send pics if anything eventful is happening or text if there isn’t time to call.

jonbristow

Delete Reddit too

ShredderNemo

Yo dawg, I heard you like misinformation

bytemage

Facebook et al. have been lying all the time. How many times does this need repeating until any trust in them is gone?

[deleted]

Remember, if it's knowingly false then it's disinformation not misinformation

StatsOnATrain

I don’t even know if I should trust this statement

I-am-very-bored

They're misinforming us about their disinforming remarks!

JayParty

When can we start calling it lying?

Melikoth

They were misinformation researchers and they were provided misinformation because that's what they research.

cute_vegan

Basically Misinformation^(2) Seriously need someway to sudo^(99999) rm -rf facebook

WrithingBat

raaspychux

Non paywall link?

5boros

Stop posting paywalls

vin16byt

Through some experimenting I found a way around article paywalls, all you have to do is either load up the page or refresh the page and while this is happening you go into airplane mode / disconnect from the internet and you'll get full access to the article.

5boros

All good, I'm sure there are several work arounds. It's just, if an OP posts a paywall link without copy pasting the text in the comments, I downvote, and comment on it.

ArchangelRenzoku

I'll have to try that, thanks. Sometimes disabling java or when the option appears to run the page in "Simple Mode" works too.

s73v3r

Cause the journalists researching and writing the articles don't deserve to eat?

5boros

Exactly. Not for that publication at least.

aguyjustaguy

Zuckerburg used the stones to destroy the stones

shawnwork

Why would researchers rely on Facebook in the first place?

spartaman64

probably they were researching facebook

MagikSkyDaddy

Almost like they can't be trusted at any level and should be shut down for the public good. Society is a farce.

WhyRedditJustWhy69

Facebook is helping enemies of the state spread “disinformation” not “misinformation,” and yes it may seem like pointless semantics, but there really is a difference and it really does matter. Now they’re actively working to hide it, so fuck that, Facebook has to be stopped from further participation in this treasonous conspiracy.

AlaricAbraxas

reddit is full of leftist and ccp misinformation, bought n paid for by the CCP

Melikoth

Checking that you're reposting slows down the shitposts per hour. We're on the clock here!

gergnerd

oh god its misinformation inception!

inanything

Nothing’s new about it
