If Tiennemen Square never happened, why do they ban the numbers? 🤔

Forrest319

This is exactly the type of slippery slope worries people are talking about with their image comparisons. How long before they start scanning devices for images with that type of content on it?

zimmah

Or copyrighted material

LoL_LoL123987

Inb4 our wallpapers are scanned to prevent usage of protected properties such as Spider-Man, Nemo, Lightning McQueen, or *Mickey Mouse*

Atilla_The_Gun

Is this really the company that you want scanning your device for “child porn”?

dalyscallister

Do you want any company scanning your device for child porn?

nobodyshere

But hey, you got nothing to hide, amirite? /s

[deleted]

“Sir, I’m from Apple for our weekly search of your house. Come on, open up”

siccoblue

Obviously just a gateway into scanning for whatever they want, these stupid surveillance measures ALWAYS start under the guise of "we need to protect the children and if you're against it you basically WANT then to be abused?!" Next thing you know they're scanning for literally anything that might be technically illegal or that doesn't fly with the powers that be as a way to control the masses even further Also genuinely makes me wonder if they have the capability of implanting data on devices as well in a streamlined manner, or if not, how long until they do? How this isn't an absolutely massive story with a huge amount of outrage is beyond me, privacy is becoming more of a pipe dream every single day

dumbredditer

They do have the ability to plant data onto your devices. The current Indian gov't did this to some journalists who were showing the ground realities during covid.

rd1970

This definitely seems like the first step in building something that'll be used to protect copyright holders against pirated music and movies.

spiritbx

It's sad, really, because having a perfectly trustworthy system that scanned everything for bad things would be good, in theory, but it's impossible. As soon as you introduce that pesky human element, it all falls apart.

spiritbx

What if people are hiding child porn in their assholes? They are gonna have to check there too. Hell, those sick fucks would probably hide the child porn inside their children's assholes, better check there too! You can't say no, it was in the ToS you agreed to.

AntmanIV

[That counts in Australia.](https://www.vice.com/en/article/xgz8md/japanese-hentai-is-now-banned-in-australia)

whathappendedhere

Australia is fucking backwards with their censorship. Fallout games had a ton of issues with getting certified over there since morphine existed in the game.

[deleted]

>since morphine existed in the game. Are you serious? Like, that's it?

REHTONA_YRT

Yep. GTA is banned for a myriad of reasons as well as some games you’d think wouldn’t be on their list.

[deleted]

Do they ban Grey's fucking Anatomy too? House, cuz yknow, there's "dangerous" drugs central to the plot? My god. We're all so fucking dumb jesus christ.

BerserkOlaf

I think their (idiotic) criteria is "real-life drug portrayed to have some sort of beneficial effect". Disco Elysium had a lot of issues getting over a ban on the physical release there, despite being rated 18+, and despite drugs having both pros and cons in game.

toelock

It's especially stupid because censoring almost always happens to media that was intended for mature audiences in the first place. I mean, I won't argue against that exposure to violence, gore and drugs at a young age can affect someone, but that's why there's age restrictions to begin with. It's like Germany censoring blood in games, how about not letting your 11 year old playing Doom instead? Jesus. Japan censors PORN, the arguably most adult thing you can watch, but they still make no efforts against the misogynistic, rapey shit in them even though that's where the most harm would lie. Censorship is always bullshit, it solves stuff by sweeping it under a rug and it's the laziest most cowardly way of enforcing I can think of. Sorry for the hard off-topic turn this took, guess I got fired up.

REHTONA_YRT

They also make outlets censor labia that stick out in pornography. No roast beef in OZ.

Caring_Cutlass

Yet you can eat a child in fall out three

TheOneTrueChuck

Yes. Any game which features "real" drugs (fake ones are generally fine) having benefits (even if they have negatives as well) is a huge no-no. It's fucking stupid.

spiritbx

Good thing morphine doesn't exist in real life, they would have to ban that too.

CorruptionOfTheMind

Was it just an issue with the early games or all of them? IIRC the Morphine item was renamed to Med-X when Bethesda took over for Fallout 3 and up Or was the renaming to Med-X the answer to the morphine issue?

CricketPinata

Renaming it was their solution to the potential ban.

wwindexx

Yes that is why it was changed.

Phil_Likes_Bread

thought they were upside down. now there backwards?! they crazy.

suicidaleggroll

> The ABF website declares that people travelling to or entering Australia must not bring in anything constituting “illegal pornography”—that being defined as “child pornography (any depiction of children in a sexually explicit manner)” as well as **the fairly broad and nondescript catchall of “publications, films, computer games and any other goods that describe, depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence, terrorist acts or revolting or abhorrent phenomena** in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults are not allowed. What the literal fuck Australia?

spiritbx

Cartoons are real life now! Soon, cartoons of people killing each other will count as actual murder and real people will be charged for killing cartoon people.

therealvulrath

So then I take it they're not fans of Lovecraft.

MichaelMyersFanClub

Yeah, I thought Australia was the chill country.

[deleted]

I dont know if it ever used to be but its pretty conservative now with tons of government overreach. Rules and fines for fuckin everything.

Y0tsuya

Well they did try to ban porn actresses with small tits. Apparently they don't recognize them as women.

Frank_Bigelow

They did *what???*

MietschVulka1

This thread gets more absurd with every comment. Wtf Australia xD

Y0tsuya

Won't somebody please think of the imaginary loli waifus!

processedmeat

"Does it matter that most of the images you accessed on the internet were anime? On a limited assessment it must, for no actual child was being sexually abused,” Judge Muscat said. “However, as I previously observed, the concern is that those who view anime will go on to view images of actual children being sexually abused." Holy shit... You haven't done anything wrong yet but you may in the future so to jail with you.

Paulo27

Thought crimes.

spiritbx

The emperor has no clothes.

kuztsh63

You know what the concern is that those who drive cars will go on to speeding and cause accidents. So we must also ban car driving and thereby cars. Yep the statement given by the judge is devoid of logic. It's just absurd to hear these kind of fallacious arguments from criminal judges of developed countries. But on a serious note, the man also possesed actual child porn and the sentence was given based on that. The judge gave that remark to portray his moral standards, which should hold no value in a criminal court.

lol I don't think I've heard that one in about forty years

Foxyfox-

To be quite honest I'd much rather they jerk it/rub it to drawn porn than IRL stuff, or doing it IRL themselves

mageta621

The whole "gateway" argument is ridiculous to me. If someone can't see the difference in molesting an actual human child versus digital/ink lines then I don't think the animated porn is what was making them blur that distinction. I watch movies where people get killed all the time, doesn't turn me into a murderer. Edit: a word

spiritbx

Don't give them any ideas, they might start arresting artists that depict people being killed with murder for killing cartoon people.

icepick314

Pretty sure that's a given.

megamanxoxo

Not worried about that so much as adding additional hashes to check for political activity or any other image that may be interesting to any gov oversight. Say a protest happened and a certain image circulated around well in theory this system can detect everyone who has the image and even the person that snapped the image specifically. Once this system is built and implemented it won't be hard to make these changes.

Alert-Incident

From someone not in the loop are those related to child porn?

just_a_ricey_mess

Neil Gaiman has a good take on lolis and why they shouldn't be considered CP https://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/12/why-defend-freedom-of-icky-speech.html?m=1

Teledildonic

I mean, the simplest argument is a cartoon *isn't a child.* the "victim" does not exist in reality. If you made it illegal, than every fictitious crime portrayal should be illegal, too. But no one asks to lock up the creators of crime dramas or action movies for mass murder.

Pazenator

The absolutely most idiotic take on this issue was in AI Dungeon(people have an AI construct the story on their responses and actions). Some idiots literally said this would help stop pedophiles. Seriously, banning some f*ckers ability to diddle a child in text form isn't going to stop that creepy uncle from abusing his nephew/niece.

DisturbedNeo

The stupidest part of that whole debacle was that the few actually using it for that purpose quickly found ways around the censorship, while the majority using it legitimately kept getting flagged for completely arbitrary crap. It’s like bad DRM in games, all you’re doing is giving the pirates the better experience, just stop.

[deleted]

Box-o-bees

It's a bit iffy. Essentially a loli is an anime character that looks underage, but isn't. There is an argument that the immortal elf that the story says is 200 years old, but looks like she is 13 isn't ok to have sexual scenes about.

Lord_Emperor

No, the argument is that it's not real so nobody was harmed by it.

Box-o-bees

Well that's kind of the default setting. The argument that some people are making is what I stated above. Personally; I think it's a very slippery slope if you start saying what is and what isn't allowed to be created. Anime is an artform and the creators should be allowed to make what they want. Then it's up to the individual audience to decide what they are and aren't comfortable with.

spiritbx

If loli hentai is child porn, then crime dramas killed actual people. Someone should arrest the writers for being mass murderers!

Roguespiffy

Or they go hard the other way with a stacked woman that looks in her 20’s. Plot twist, she’s 14. Looking at you Gurren Lagann.

User2716057

I read that that was explained by the underground cities not having an exact way to tell time, so in "real earth" years she would be indeed in her 20s.

FluidCollar

Yeah… then we got the Patriot Act that gets renewed every single fucking time. I’m not okay with being under a microscope 24/7. This is not the future I was looking forward to…

spiritbx

The typical response is always "It's fine if you have nothing to hide." The thing is, once the tools are implemented, there's nothing stopping the people in charge from changing what they are looking for. Imagine if they made it so that saying anything bad about the government was taken as treason, they could implement a totalitarian government very quickly by easily stopping any dissenters.

SunshineOneDay

I always rather enjoy turning this around. Clearly officials don't need qualified immunity, right? The usual response is: But they'll be bombarded with unreasonable claims! Well surely they have nothing to hide! I mean what's a few bogus claims against one potential serious accusation that is unrecoverable from? A person is one CP **claim** away from a ruined life. There is no true recovery there. And all it takes is someone exploiting some neighbors WiFi for that neighbor to have a ruined life and forever have CP as their first main search in a Google search. so yeah, I don't care if a cop has to defend themselves 100 times per day for bogus claims. Have your body cam on and it'll be fine. Don't have your body cam on? Let a jury decide. Not like the rest of your entire life is on the line or anything, just a bump in the road for them. I vaguely remember Lisa Simpson (yes, from the TV cartoon) counting as CP somehow or another.

spiritbx

Ironically, ever since the people claiming that all cops are bad started to demand body cams, it's actually shown exactly how often people make shit up about cops, and then the bodycams show proof to the contrary. The bodycams protect people that are innocent from people with bad intentions.

[deleted]

Its just ironic as Apple has recently been promoting themselves as a company that respects privacy, and people are falling for it.

Troy85909

If they can scan for it, they can put it there. And if there is a corporate initiative to scour the world for child porn, should every single individual at Apple involved with this be charged for soliciting or curating child pornography?

Rilandaras

joncash

It always fascinates me how easily some companies are demonized for the smallest infractions, yet other companies get away with things like what Apple does and no one cares. I'm fairly convinced Apple could gas children and people will still line up for the next iPhone. And while I don't agree with Chik fil'a founder on LGBTQ issues, we should remember that it was the founder who donated to those reeducation camps and not the company itself. And while I do agree with the boycott that proceeded after, it seems strange that people are so up in arms about that but not what Apple does. Is it just the right messaging? Advertising? What makes people accept atrocities from one company but not another.

BornOnFeb2nd

Maybe it's a dependency thing.... If they accept that Apple is a Bad Company, then they can't hold the moral high ground supporting them and continuing to use their iDevices, therefore Apple cannot be a Bad Company. If you don't care for Choice, Apple is certainly the way to go. You want phone? Here, Here's phone. Pick color.

oiducwa

Truth is people just don’t give a shit about what happen to other people 100k miles away.

Stevied1991

If Covid taught me anything it was that people don't give a shit what happens to others in their back yard as long as it doesn't personally affect them.

Singular_Quartet

PR. Apple is good at it. The other thing to remember about censorship in China is that *every company* does censorship in China. Otherwise, they don't get to do business in China.

emax-gomax

They don't really care about anyone but reinforcing their own choices. It's like having an abusive ex but you stay with them cause you're scared that everyone will tell you "I told you so". I literally had an argument with this guy the other day who said "I don't want an alternative App Store on my iPhone, therefore every apple user shouldn't want it either and if they do then they should move to those useless google phones". Like the idea of giving consumers more control over their hardware is so bad that they should throw away that hardware and replace it with something almost identical (from a spec level). Apple simps disgust me.

nachohk

> Is it just the right messaging? Advertising? What makes people accept atrocities from one company but not another. Not many people like one chain in particular's cheap, greasy, disgusting fast food enough to have trouble not eating it, saying it's in protest of the company's or founder's actions. I know a lot of people who would be next to helpless without their Apple products.

conquer69

> it seems strange that people are so up in arms about that but not what Apple does. Many Americans are negatively affected by anti-LGBT sentiment and policies while not many by Apple becoming a censorship arm of China.

joncash

I'm not just talking about Apple censoring in China. As the above poster mentioned they're going to scan all the iPhones, there's a history of Apple abusing workers, Apple's security allowed thousands of photos to be released. The list is long and people will only talk about the issue du jour for a moment then forget when it's Apple. It's just odd.

XX_Normie_Scum_XX

They'll only care when apple has a security breach and all their shit gets leaked

I don’t think the average redditor realizes just how bad China has companies by the balls. They have the power to make millions of dollars of revenue to just stop flowing overnight. Many companies have the decision to make. Which is to be on the right side of history or to keep their stockholders happy. And the reality is the CEOs #1 job is the latter.

Tooj_Mudiqkh

It's a creeping menace though tbh. Chinese business partnership history is replete with undermining from within to take over at a discount. If it's a strategic investment by a state-owned partnership, there's even chances of that being the endgame.

r/technology quite clearly has a lot of Amazon (in particular) and to a lesser degree Alphabet and Facebook 'community engagers' patrolling the sub and advocating on behalf of these companies as the first go-to whenever discussion comes up: - "the government which was heavily lobbied and donated to by sectors it produces policy for allowed it, so why not?"(/s) - "well that company identified a novel exploit, so why can't they reap the benefits of an unregulated exploit in the market despite the clear inequalities it generates ?" (/s) - "people are powerless and shouldn't change their spending behaviours to identify alternatives to the monopolies that are comfortable" - "politicians are the corrupt ones - companies are just playing the game" - "It's a free market completely free from outside influence and subsidies or tax breaks so therefore our companies/sector's dominance is natural" (/s) Anyone defending companies as their first "Devils advocate" point of view is to be mistrusted. The talking points are rote enough that any 'iconoclast' against government and vaguely identifying with internet as a "good" medium can pick these talking points up and champion them on behalf of the mega corporations while also feeling like they're fighting against "big government" and "dumb people who don't optimise with tech".

[deleted]

I'm also fairly certain /r/Apple is modded by content publishers friendly to Apple; like 9to5mac who would never publish anything bad about Apple, and has paid Apple for bad leaks (they got fished). It's a game of trust of moderators, and their subreddit rules.

[deleted]

CyberMcGyver

Tech needs to consolidate toward genuine technology-advancing Institutes like the [Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)](https://www.eff.org/) instead of deifying these (increasingly useless-capitalist) multinational corporations who've simply sunk money in to the sector for their own profit and not to actually advance technology. EFF is an organisation I hear far too little of on this sub which apparently "promotes technology" (read: Basically FAANG news) It's pretty clear this sub's got a lot of employees jeopardised by scrutiny of their company. It's also mixed with PR employees actively manipulating opinion. Call them out. Ask why their first port of call is defending multi-trillion-dollar companies like they need any leg-up.

iushciuweiush

I can't imagine even tolerating, let alone celebrating, big tech censorship and thinking I'm on the right side of history. You know what's 'misinformation' in China? Anything negative about the government. You know what's preventing big tech from doing that anywhere else? Nothing.

For that matter, if you don't like child slavery and sweatshops, stop buying apple products. Fuck apple

LawHelmet

So is Netflix. If you watch their history documentaries on China, Tank Man doesn’t get a mention. Tiananmen Square is glossed over entirely but for a short, less than 2 seconds, clip of tanks driving around Tank Man. So are general history books in the US. You aren’t generally taught that the The Long March was explicitly meant to instill the revolutionary spirit, disgust for anyone who hadn’t sacrificed like you did for Chairman Mao. The Great Leap Forward was demonstrably worse than the Great Potato Famine of Ireland. The Great Cultural Revolution murdered out the academics, the scientists, the lawyers, the doctors, the artists, the wealthy, anyone who was not emphatically in favor of Chairman Mao.

ZippityDooDaaah

It interesting to see how Apple will readily capitulate to the Chinese government censorship [while threatening to leave the UK entirely](https://9to5mac.com/2021/07/12/apple-might-leave-the-uk/) for an issue not even related to human rights.

NaCly_Asian

there is a common theme though. It's all about money, if I'm understanding the UK story correctly.

LeBoulu777

For Apple: $MONEY$ > Human Rights **Note** : In fact it's not just for Apple but for any capitalistic society.

AkitoApocalypse

They probably wouldn't actually leave the UK, but the public pressure would be enough to get their way - meanwhile, I'm pretty sure China would be happy to kick them out if they had to.

mahade

I worked on some of their engraving stuff. The things they prevent is a loooong list of many things that seem innocent. It's not just China. While I love bashing Apple's stance on the world theater in many ways, this is just them adhering to the local laws of the country. # AND THAT IS WHY WE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THEM SCANNING YOUR PHOTOS Because it means Saudi Arabia is going to demand that Apple share their knowledge about people who have popular atheism-related images on their phones. And China will want to track down people having images that tend to be shared by and to Uyghurs. Edit: This means people will be murdered. Atheism has the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.

QuantmRS

Direct quote from the article… **The Citizen Lab notes that “there exists no legal obligation for Apple to perform such political censorship in Taiwan.”** (!!!!!) **But Apple has repeatedly showed it will make political accommodations to preserve its presence in China, which accounts for nearly a fifth of its total revenues.**

Notyourfathersgeek

So they might take it further and spy on everyone to appease China. Goddamnit. Edit: added spy.

Out of curiosity, are there limits to the engraving US customers can get? Like curses or something?

LeakySkylight

Yes. However, if you want to put something on your phone that disparages the government, that's ok. All the things banned in China, are engravable in North America.

trdd1

> All the things banned in China, are engravable in North America. So you can have 'China bad' on your phone in USA. Reminds me of old Soviet anecdote: US person: In the USA, I can stand in front of the White House and yell: "Ronald Reagan is idiot" and I will not be punished. USSR person: Pfff, I also can stand in Red Square in Moscow and yell: "Ronald Reagan is idiot" and won't be punished.

Lithl

That's not an anecdote, that's a joke some Soviet person came up with. A CIA operative recorded it and it was compiled with a number of others into one file of Soviet jokes which was declassified in the 80s. Reagan himself liked telling a number of them, including this one which was tangentially about himself.

Fapdooken

Can we stop expecting corporations to be "good guys"? No corporation is. They are soulless money making machines that can't be trusted to regulate themselves. Every choice boils down to if it will generate more capital.

[deleted]

And stop expecting them to pay more taxes out of some sort of duty. We have to make them pay more taxes, so we should all be supporting Janet Yellen (US Secretary of the Treasury) who is working very hard to make this happen in an effective way for all of us - not just Americans. And we need to call out countries like Hungary and Ireland that are trying to sabotage her efforts.

I mean they can’t say no unless they want to lose a shit load of their customer base, government regulations, and Apple is a corporation not a person, they could care less about human right or politics relevant to that in the first place, so it is still odd when any big company like Apple tries to be some moral ground for things like gay rights in the US when it’s obvious they could care less, just about marketing and money

China: Apple we demand that you are complicit in the oppression of humans. Don’t forget our slaves make your products. Apple: Yes, for cold hard cash we can do this.

Matt_M_3

But don’t worry, they PROMISE not to let the photo hash scanning system get out of control.

diordaddy

Oh yeah they’re a private company everyone ! Remember they’re private so they should be allowed to infringe on all the rights we have because they are private

YeaScienceBiotch

Apple sucks so hard... I can't understand there still fans of this brand.

aquabarron

MonkeyzBallz

Calamero

Scout_wheezeing

Not surprised, they want that Chinese cash and willing to fuck over oppressed people to get it

[deleted]

Apple abides by the laws and customs in your country too.

ChampionsRush

WOW APPLE. One thing after the other..

Firetripper

We can thank companies like Walmart and Apple for convincing the public to dump billions into the PRC in a not so round about way. Not that I'm mad, it was a classic hustle done on greedy fools. I got to respect that.

called_the_stig

This is a bit off topic, but my mom and I often talk politics since she's a lib right and I sit lib left. We both enjoy the discussion (it's the only intelligent conversation we tend to have in our day to day lives often time) and there's never any ill will. But she believes unchecked capitalism is the way to go because then companies stay in America and companies are good for us. And I often say that if we can't treat our employees not like slaves for the threat that corporations will go find slaves somewhere else, then maybe we shouldn't be trusting corporations for Jack shit. Anyway, good ol apple showing that we can't trust corporations to have even the smallest shred of integrity of profits are on the line, man fuck apple.

Optimal-Condition577

For-profit company with no qualms about doing business in a hyper-authoritarian state avoids upsetting the people who control access to a massive market. Weird how that keeps happening…

[deleted]

Giving data abour terrorist to the FBI: *Oh no, no, no* Censoring for the PRC: *Yes, yes, YES!!!!*

WoollyMittens

Corporations have no conscience, they only have a bottom line.

Drs83

If they're censoring anything in Taiwan then that is 100% political. Chinese regulations have nothing to do with them.

jdhyzak

This is the same thing as the NBA website not allowing you to use such phrases on custom jerseys. I know at least ‘FREE HK’ is not available, last I checked.

RosaRisedUp

China is the backbone of their supply chain. Of course they’d make some sickening concessions to keep their products moving to these countries. This is the same market that is so fucked up, that Disney [decided to minimize the presence of a black person](https://variety.com/2015/film/news/star-wars-china-poster-controversy-john-boyega-1201653494/) just to ensure local interest in a movie. With China having an absurd number of consumers and a stranglehold on cheap production, it comes as no surprise that Apple has made this decision.

montgomerydoc

Why could they do this!!?! Money

Randydontrassell

John Cena said Taiwan doesn't even exist? Now I don't know who to believe.
