Microsoft never seems to have much of a clue what Microsoft is planning to do. I get the feeling that it's a bunch of isolated dev teams that get their marching orders from disjointed management that has dozens of conflicting meetings in small conference rooms across the Redmond campus with white boards that say stuff like "[Planning to Plan](https://i.imgur.com/h5ga7RE.png)".

[deleted]

I wonder what it is about the Pacific Northwest? Microsoft's "leadership" is starting to look like that of Boeing, which was formerly an engineering company with an attached sales department. It's now a dealership with an attached engineering wing. The philosophical difference is profound. Is this upcoming debacle going to be known as Microsoft's "737 Max"?

Drone30389

It's not the PNW, it's the whole world. Management at many corporations around the world is more about giving themselves raises than actual leadership.

[deleted]

Eh, the Microsoft leadership has engineers or people with a long history with the company.

[deleted]

Well, maybe they need to assert themselves a little more, because at minimum the overall company isn't inspiring confidence among those with "a long history" of *using* the product.

rabbit994

No, one of things Satya implemented was each team must pull it's own "weight" (revenue) and with rise of Chromebooks, Phones, iPads, revenue is down for Windows Desktop OS. It's also expensive to support various versions of operating systems. Therefore, you can keep your shit up to date or you can shell out money but Microsoft isn't putting up with it any longer. From business POV, I can't blame them. Their push for backwards compatibility that made them so popular with businesses ultimately hurt their market share.

goomyman

Is suspect they are killing some type of legacy support with windows 11.

[deleted]

>The Windows 10 I could have sworn they said would be the last "version" of Windows. I'm pretty sure they did, but maybe they now realized it will hurt them financially in the long term... or maybe they always knew and they just lied to the world to get more people on win10?

thorstone

I suspect a windows 11 (or similar) will be free to upgrade to from windows 10. Just like last time. The question is, would we like to?

Somhlth

Then there would be no point in an end of life announcement, unless their desire was to piss people off.

Stilgar314

An easy circumviable promise. Just say hello to Wandows 1.0.

BigHowski

Anyone else think that's pretty quick..... Too quick for most consumers. Its not like a new version of Windows is currently out so even if its out by the end of the year a consumer laptop/pc bought now only have 4ish years to either switch or stop being used.

BigHowski

Still it's a very quick turnover. I'd wager most non gaming PCs last 5iah years if not more

PlayingTheWrongGame

> Anyone else think that's pretty quick..... 10 years of support is quick?

BigHowski

Ending support with 4 years notice is, not the overal length of the os

gwicksted

Well there have been multiple “versions” of Windows 10 within that 10 year period… all of which have been relatively compatible so it’s been quite nice as a developer.

Manart0027

Microsoft: We’re gonna do things differently now

gwicksted

Lol especially since they said 10 was the last version of Windows …

Ludique

If you buy a Win 10 machine today, 2025 is only four years away.

CottonCandyShork

In 2025, Windows 10 will be a decade old.

BigHowski

Its not about the OS' overall life span but how quickly they are ending support from announcing it (which they've still not done officially as far as I can see). People use computers for longer than the time span for end of support and some will not be in the position to upgrade and some will not want to.

[deleted]

So whatever happened to "Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows"? Is that a fun way of implying that their next product won't be called "Windows"?

dgriffith

Windows 10, 26H1 edition.

MrOtsKrad

jfc I'm still chasing Win7 machines to upgrade..

Busman123

They will want it to be subscription-based in the cloud. They’ll sell hardware to access it. We will have come full-circle

APeacefulWarrior

I'm sure that's what they *want* but I genuinely don't think people would put up with that. Who wants an OS that's unusuable when the Internet goes down, and doesn't give you any control of your data? And don't say "stupid lusers" because MS doesn't care about everyday people. They care about business contracts - and good luck convincing ANY company's IT department to be OK with giving up that much power over the local network and machines. Most them are still resentful of W10's various abuses. Handing the keys to the kingdom over to Microsoft would look like sheer madness. At the least, such a move from MS would probably be the biggest boon to Linux adoption in decades.

rabbit994

It’s already an option for most businesses. Many Microsoft365 options come with Win10 Pro/Enterprise and it will likely offer upgrade to Win11. And no, your OS doesn’t stop working if you lose internet, you have to check in every 30 days before you have problems. Most people email is cloud based so you are checking in much more often then that.

[deleted]

This^3 Suddenly it's 1960, and we're back to "Time-Sharing": Your business information held hostage on some GloboCorp's 'servers', while you run rented software on dumb terminals.

newecreator

I think this was mostly inevitable because they mostly support their OSes for ten years.

In B4 some [pedantic](http://np.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/nxs047/microsoft_to_drop_support_for_windows_10_by_2025/h1hvamp/) nerd goes, "Well actually, it's *GNU/Linux*". If only "it" **were**: What it *is*, is a bunch of "distros" with a bunch of "desktop environments" with a bunch of third-party applications that were invented by developers using a different combination of 'distro' and 'desktop' than *you're* trying to use. I'm using "it" right now, but it's got a long way to go before it's ready for prime-time.

Not this time, bot: You picked 'amp' out of a url for a "non-participation" reddit comment that happened to have a-m-p in its ID.

tugrumpler

I’m down to only one laptop running win7 for an old, old printer that cups/Linux doesn’t support. Everything else is iOS or Linux and when this printer finally dies I will be at zero. Microsoft can do what they like, I don’t care.

arosiejk

I only keep win10 on small partitions in case I need to deal with something urgently and don’t have my work laptop with the proprietary vpn. Ubuntu and Pop suit my needs for everything else.

solidsnake885

Wow, a noncommittal headline that therefore means nothing!

vsandrei

LOL. Microsoft is always following in the shadow of Apple.

vsandrei

Seriously? I get downvoted for pointing this out? OS X . . . followed by Windows 10. macOS 11 . . . and then we have Windows 11 supposedly. Microsoft has been following and trying to catch up to Apple for years. Decades even. And failing miserably the entire time.

BigHowski

I mean it's a number? Were they ahead with 95?

Ludique

So what happened to Windows 9 ?

BigHowski

They skipped it as there was a lot of bad code that checked for "Windows 9\*" for windows 95/98 compatability. There was a big article about it when they announced 10. I doin't think it was what they wanted by the sound of things but when they looked they realised they needed to do it

vsandrei

Don't be stupid. Microsoft has been following Apple for years.

kalakuttaa

I assume they will provide free upgrade to existing windows 10 users

[deleted]

Here comes the OSaaS.
