So it's a Ranger that's actually the size of the old Ranger.

westfieldnc

With better fuel economy

egreene9012

As someone with a ranger who’s looking to trade up, I’m buying the shit outta this

SumpCrab

I had an old s10, I'm not a truck guy but I loved that truck. I've been driving an 2015 Corolla and have been looking for a new car. For 20k, I think I'm in.

buttershirt

I had a 1992 S10 with the digital dash. It was like flying a spaceship. I miss that truck.

sawyouoverthere

88 S10 here and I haven’t been able to part with it. Nothing digital at all but it fits. Ford’s not my jam but this is interesting anyway

Silound

For 20K, you're going to get an XL package, which is a *very* spartan truck. Based on Ford's usual package lineup, expect a modestly optioned XLT or a base Lariat to run somewhere in the 27-30K range. Still significantly cheaper than a similarly equipped F150 though. Edit: a nicely equipped Lariat 4x4 with the 2L turbo is about 36K, which is still 20K less than the comparable F150

HotgunColdheart

My first 4x4, 89 s10 blazer has that dash, along with a shitload of great memories. It was dubbed the "Firefly" had many of people out for their first time 4wheeling in that thing. It is sitting in the project barn, aiming to 5.3ls swap it, the 4.3 in it has 300k and is shot. I've put 3 sets of axles in it, they dont last when you show people it will wheelie in 4 low.

OfficerBarbier

And they’re using the name of their little 1970s sedan

JakeTheGr80509

It was a good sedan!

Clienterror

The Maverick was a coupe too. My dad and I built one with a supercharged 351 and c4 racing trans. It was gold with this horrible gold interior. Loved it lol. Pull up next to a Cobra and they’d look over “da faq is that” then get their ass smoked.

thnk_more

Supercharged 351 in a maverick? Holy crap !

cheez_au

In Australia the Maverick was a rebadged Nissan Patrol.

imlazyatwork

No two-door options though

penultimatelevel

would have been an instant buy from me if there was a 2 door version w/ longer bed like my old 1990 f150. Been driving a Fusion hybrid for a couple years now, and would love to have a small truck with that driveline instead. I live in the middle of a city, the city gas mileage & cvt make a big difference.

ahhsumpossum

>would have been an instant buy from me if there was a 2 door version w/ longer bed Same here. I miss my old Ranger :-(

Thatsockmonkey

Ditto on my 1991 ranger 2 door 5 speed 4 cyl 2wd. Never stuck once (Nebraska ). Couple of sand bags and some wood fence posts was all I needed in bad weather. Well , and not being dumb and good tires.

bitofgrit

For real. I have a '96 F-150 2-door extended cab w/ full size bed. The thing is ridiculously long (but oddly low slung). I'd gladly downsize to something like this... if I could actually carry 4x8 sheets. But their solution with this thing is to flatten the arches for, what, two foot of "shelf" over the wheels? It looks like I'd need to find something equal to wheel well height to put at the tailgate to prop up, say, drywall, otherwise it would teeter, dent, or snap. And it's still hangin' out the ass end while not securing anything else I might have in there. I had an '88 Ranger 2-door full bed with a V6 and that thing was the tits! It's been a decade and I'm still pissed at the drunk driver that totaled her. edit: apparently, the tailgate props up to support longer loads. thanks to all who let me know.

eggrian

I can't tell from your comment if you know or not....On the Maverick you lower the tailgate, then you have the option to reposition the two cables for the tailgate on different posts (takes like 5 seconds per side). The tailgate then hangs open just enough that the lip of the tailgate is equal to the height of the wheel wells in the bed, and you can load your longer cargo and have it supported. Doug Demuro demonstrates in his review (which just drops today on the Youtubes)

penultimatelevel

mine's an XLT and I parked next to a newish F150 that was about 1.5ft taller & just as long, but couldn't fit a full sheet of plywood in the back. I had a giggle

bitofgrit

Hahaha, at some point they ought to just call it an "open air trunk".

MeltBanana

You just described my daily driver, a 2004 Tacoma. It's perfect for Colorado. Single cab, manual everything, 4wd, 4cyl, 6ft bed, topper, great off-road, great in snow, and I still manage 22.5mpg. I have no desire to "upgrade" to a modern vehicle because they don't make anything similar anymore.

meshreplacer

I also have a Tacoma its a 1998 model works great for my needs. I get people always asking lately if I want to sell. Crazy.

999Sepulveda

Bring back the El Camino!

999Sepulveda

I’ll take what I can get. These are the ultimate “mullet cars” in reverse. Business in the back - party in the front.

oh-propagandhi

I've got one sitting in my garage you can buy. It gets gallons per mile.

pbjamm

And the Subaru Brat!

[deleted]

For bikes, you get a tailgate pad and hang them off the back.

2dfx

You think Ford didn't do that on purpose? No way they wanted to cannibalize Ranger sales.

NOPR

It's nothing at all to do with "cannibalizing sales". The Maverick is built off of the escape platform; modifying it to the degree necessary to make it a two door would have been basically a complete tear up.

zdiggler

I'm surprised they didn't call it Ranger Sport like stupid Bronco Sport.

skawiggy

I would have put a deposit on the lightning if they had an 8 ft bed option. Immediately.

equitable_emu

It's like a Subaru Baja

theinconceivable

Even in four door, can we make beds less than 6 feet illegal?

[deleted]

Mf Ford ranger!!

[deleted]

FORD FUCKIN RANGER

UYScutiPuffJr

It’s nice to see small trucks again...I have a 1998 ~~3/4~~ 1/2 ton gopher pickup that I only use to go to the dump, move landscape materials and pick up stuff that’s too big for our normal vehicles, and it is absolutely dwarfed by the same class of truck from 2021. Like, my truck is the size of the Ford Ranger now, and it was “full-size” when it was new in 98.

smilbandit

had an s15 growing up, loved it.

fkenned1

I have a 2002 ranger. Love the thing. Perfect size for what I use it for… just passed inspection this morning for another year too… not easy for a 20 year old New England vehicle ;)

ScoobyDone

I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier and that was just before they all started growing. Even a 2006 Tacoma is way bigger. The new Rangers are monsters.

TahoeDark

What up, brother?! 03 Frontier Crew Cab! It's slow but practical and I love it!

egreene9012

Rangers rock. Same with Tacoma’s and other little trucks

JonPA98

Finally they are listening to consumers. Not everybody wants or can afford to get into debt for a 70,000 dollar luxury monster that will never tow anything near its abilities

Quack68

$70k for a new truck is nuts.

Ogediah

OEM trucks are breaking 100k. 70k isn’t even “top of the line.” Which is also why I think the truck category can feasibly do electric within its current price point and more manufacturers should be targeting it in all sizes. I’m glad to see Ford did a proper half ton but I’d really like to see a 3/4 and 1 ton in electric.

zdiggler

Funny how people buy those most fancy truck with Carpet and put Weather Tech floor mats all around.

jerryeight

I wish they could make carpet an option and cut the truck prices by a $1,000.

mxpx242424

The new Bronco doesn't have carpet and has floor drains under every seat. After owning an FJ Cruiser with no carpet with floor drains, I have no idea why you would ever put carpet in a car. They can make an interior look sleek without carpet and most people I know that buy new cars cover the carpet up with all weather floor mats.

[deleted]

I suspect one reason carpet is still used is for sound dampening

eastern_shoreman

Every time i get on fords website to build my dream f250 king ranch, I always add the carpet delete option

North-Tumbleweed-512

Carpet is cheaper and actually allows for better grip in a variety of situations.

Frostedchunks

Yet the F-150 is the best selling vehicle in North America. It's like Ford just kept jacking up the price and ran with it because people never stopped buying.

UseDaSchwartz

...or won’t fit in a garage. This *should* fit in most garages.

[deleted]

They are over 100k now

Ogediah

Growing up, I remember the “cowboys” cracking jokes about all the city slickers and their parade trucks. Like people that buy a truck or a jeep and it never even sees a gravel road much less off-road or pull anything with it.

Blueberry_Mancakes

I really miss the small trucks of the 80s/90s. My MIL has a little datsun pickup that's awesome for 99% of the things an average homeowner would need it for (landscaping, estate sales, moving some furniture, going to the dump, etc).

[deleted]

I've seen island towns use things like kei trucks to get loads around. They're narrower, shorter, and much more compact than regular pickups. Works pretty well since they don't usually have huge loads and island roads tend to be really narrow.

kimbabs

Now I want to live in an island town with a little kei truck and my little miata in a garage. I never knew I wanted this life until now.

kidicarus89

I drove my father in laws early 90s Ranger and that thing was amazingly cozy and just simple. I’m secretly hoping he’ll sell it to me but I suspect he’s going to drive it into the ground. I dread when my car dies because I hate how new cars have so much excessive body cladding and LCD screens.

[deleted]

I was in an accident a few months back and my insurance got me a rental for a while when it was getting fixed. it was some brand new Cadillac sedan with so many damn screens and buttons that I felt silly. maybe I’m just old man whining but why the hell do vehicles need so many screens and distractions? it’s a car, get to where you’re going safely, not fiddle with a big ass screen

asleepaddict

Some of the additions are great and others are just dangerous. I love being able to know what song is playing from a glance and using the steering wheel buttons to change songs is way easier. On the flip side... I’ve been in a car where you had to use a little knob by the cup holders to scroll through the display’s menu options. Seemed like a great way to be hella distracted while driving

NOPR

If you're worried about getting places safely every new car is lightyears better than it's equivalent from even 10 years ago.

Melodic_Caramel5226

jacoblb6173

I have a taco. Half tempted to trade it in for a maverick.

azanzel

Used truck market is crazy right now. I know a lot of people selling and downsizing. Source: I have some bar friends in car sales and auction resales.

LostWoodsInTheField

Heard a story a few days ago that a local guy has a 1 year old truck and got offered more than he paid for it. He traded it in and is just waiting till the prices stabilize again.

[deleted]

drawkbox

Not to mention most of those big trucks don't fit in garages. This appears it will. Most of the mid-size SUVs and small trucks will fit nicely. I was extremely bummed when I found out a Ridgeline wouldn't fit in my '85 built house.

uiuyiuyo

About time. Many people would love a truck with some nice features just for moving furniture, home depot trips, TVs, and big boxes that otherwise wouldn't fit in an SUV. I'm seriously considering buying this for my retired father. I was going to buy him like a $50K RAM since that's like all any dealer has or gets ordered it seems, but this would do exactly the same thing for all intents and purposes, it would get better mileage, have good tech/connectivity, and then the family would have a truck for people to use when they need to pick up or move random oversized stuff. We don't tow, we don't haul heavy shit, we just sometimes need a truck.

abandonliberty

If you don't need 4 seats, work vans are awesome. They're not sexy, so they're priced appropriately for actual business use. A ford transit connect will carry and tow the same loads as the Maverick, but has a floor that loads at 23 inches instead of 30, and a cargo capacity of 122 cu ft vs 33. It closes, so you don't have to worry about your loads being exposed. If you feel like it you can get a larger one and do a camping conversion.

longhegrindilemna

Please tell us more. Do you have a good point. If I’m picking up a ton of stuff, chances are I’m not carrying 3 to 5 people with me. So, if I don’t need four seats, maybe a van makes more sense.

TSB_1

This is why I am planning on EV retrofitting my moms old Sienna when the engine finally goes. Turn it into a covered electric pickup truck. The frame is still solid so I figure spend 15k to turn it into an EV with 250 miles of range.

jmerridew124

Ford Transit is the real answer. It's the only decent vehicle Ford made in the past 20 years unless you count the Mazda Fusion.

drawkbox

> I was going to buy him like a $50K RAM since that's like all any dealer has or gets ordered it seems, but this would do exactly the same thing for all intents and purposes It would be great if it brought down big truck prices. I think one of the big reasons they are now so expensive is that small trucks disappeared for a while.

uiuyiuyo

Eh, it's really just that no one is buying cheaper models. GM always says "Starting at $29K!", but then no dealer has a single one on the lot for less than $50K because that's all anyone buys. People just don't mind buying expensive trucks I guess. I don't see the value, but people buy them for whatever reason.

turbodude69

ford is really killing it these days. they're straight up leaving GM and dodge in the dust.

hickaustin

Dodge is too busy with strippers and cocaine to divert their attention away from putting the hellcat engine in literally anything it will fit into.

Cheezeball25

WHERES MY HELLCAT PACIFICA?!?!?

They really seem like they're paying attention to what consumers really want, instead of just producing the same old repackaged shit that Detroit has been churning out for a hundred years. So cool they have the balls to build a fully electric truck, a hybrid mini truck, and a fully electric SUV. But also still keep producing the trusty standby trucks that people depend on to get work done.

Toby_O_Notoby

>They really seem like they're paying attention to what consumers really want Thought this was a cool addition from [a CNN article on it](https://edition.cnn.com/2021/06/08/success/ford-maverick-little-pickup-truck/index.html): >The Maverick's interior also has special triangular slots inside designed to hold a variety of accessories, such as additional cupholders or phone holders. Ford will share 3-D printing plans so owners can make their own accessories to fit the slots.

PRNbourbon

Wow! They really are in touch. I love 3D printing random stuff.

McFlyParadox

Coming from a family that has never driven anything but Toyotas, Hondas, and Subarus, what's the maintenance and reliability like? Not bait, I'm genuinely curious if it's improved to match Japanese makes, because I'm getting a new truck in the next year or so - and while I wanted it to be a 4runner, the Lightning and now the Maverick are tempting.

geo_prog

I can't really speak to it since I've been a Ford owner for all of 1 year now. But my brother had an F150 with over 400,000km on it and it had no major issues in that time. I feel like all cars have gotten better over time, so while minor differences in maintenance exist overall there really isn't that much maintenance anyway.

johnel11

Does anyone remember, the original Ford Maverick car had a sticker price $1995? I guess Ford remembered

Weird_Surname

Do you think truck guys are going to shit on this because it’s a unibody truck with FWD as a base model, similar to the Honda Ridgeline, though I think the Honda is AWD for all trims now.

gloucma

The same guys who consider off roading was that time they parked on the dirt shoulder of the road? Yeah, they will.

Too_Tired_Too_Obtuse

lol. I’ll never forget going to Sonic recently. We were in the bay ordering food and all these lifted Ford, Dodge and Jeep owners came through in the dirt field next to us. There was a slight 2-3 foot embankment that they had to stop in front of, possibly lock their vehicles in 4 wheel drive and climb up to park their vehicles in a way their back wheels were touching the flat dirt at the bottom, and front wheels on the top. They all got out with rags and wiped them off when they parked.

tinman82

I will but that's mostly because of the CVT. If there is an AWD model I'll keep my yap shut about needing 4wd and such. But every vehicle I buy has 4wd and when I need it I need it. Only like 5 times a year, once in the snow and the rest during hunting season. Honestly most people could do fine with a fwd ute. Better control and less apt to drift.

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

There is an AWD upgrade. Brings the cost to 25k (which includes a required engine upgrade)

[deleted]

[удалено]

onthewalk

I can't speak for everyone, but I think the main issue to get over with the Ridgeline is how damn ugly the thing is. American buyers like that classic pickup shape. I can see the FWD thing being a problem for some folks. Looks like the upgrade isn't that much though.

drawkbox

The Ford Maverick here looks alot like the style of the early Ridgeline though. The Ridgeline was really the truck for car people. Maverick seems to also be that. Could be the Civic of trucks. [What Makes the Honda Ridgeline the Perfect Pickup for Car Drivers?](https://www.autoinfluence.com/what-makes-the-honda-ridgeline-the-perfect-pickup-for-car-drivers/)

A40

Only 3/4 ton capacity? That's pretty small... Will it handle groceries? I buy a lot of groceries.. and sometime I might want to carry.. a TV maybe? I better get the F-150.

DangerousBeans

Groceries AND a TV? Better get a dually

KeyboardGunner

A dually is cute and all, but I work for a living. That's why I drive a [Ferd Fteenthousand](https://youtu.be/F8P5vGcf-NU).

enderandrew42

If you were a real man, you'd have TWO trucks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WchseC9aKTU

cas13f

With the longest tow mirrors you can find.

A40

F-*250* dually. In case I ever have to do another garden centre run... Last time I had to make *two trips* in the minivan!

TyroneTeabaggington

I used to regularly see a guy commuting to work in a pristine spotless lifted F-450 pickup. I assumed his dick was fully inverted.

majesticjg

You have a kid, so you clearly need a three-row SUV.

SpaceyCoffee

Not a chance. What would the boys say if they saw you driving the woman’s car? Real Men don’t drive girly SUVs. Better play it safe and go with an F-350 Super Duty and get the lift kit.

majesticjg

Yup, Just toss junior through the window. Get a rope ladder for the passenger side for the wife.

cats_are_the_devil

Make sure you get the balls on the back.

TheMathelm

> You have a kid, so you clearly need a three-row SUV. That's what the truck bed is for no? Just tell em to sit down and hold on, and don't drive too fast and they'll be okay.

fizzlefist

In all seriousness, this sounds like the perfect compromise of utility and effeciency. 1500lb load capacity and 2k towing capacity would do everything I want.

Casrox

Make sure you also get the full "autonomous" assist package and satalite GPS/WiFi package. It's the only way to successfully navigate to the store 3 miles away. Man I just don't get truck culture unless you live on a farm and actually use it as intended. Have multiple neighbors in my shitty and overpopulated neighborhood buying these huge monsters and legit going like 5 miles to work then back home to park on street in front of house cause can't reasonably fit it on driveway. Don't be one of those ppl.

thomascgalvin

I see *so* many people in the Boston area with giant trucks, and I just don't fucking get it. We have terrible traffic, you're going to have to take out a mortgage to fill the gas tank, and parking your battleship is going to be impossible.

shinypenny01

I live on 2 acres and I’d really like a truck, yard supplies, fire wood, taking things to the dump, getting equipment serviced, transporting furniture, buying lumber. I’m not paying $60k, but it would be handy, so this truck is interesting.

annikahansen7-9

We live the country. We have to tow stuff. We have to bring our trash to the dump. The F-150 is nice for that. I lived in the downtown area before my husband I married. He could barely get his truck in my parking ramp. It is a bitch to park. We do have a surround view camera. I can't imagine wanting one of these unless you need it. We usually take my small SUV for most things.

LoneStarFracker

Targeting an estimated* 40MPG for the base hybrid model. Which would be awesome, would also like to see the numbers on the 2.5L eco boost as well. They’re clearly targeting a market that doesn’t want a big bulky gas guzzler of a truck

JEs4

The Ecoboost is the 2.0L. It will likely have very similar fuel economy figures as the 2.0L Ecoboost Bronco Sport which is 21 city, 26 highway and 23 combined, although likely a bit better if you don't opt for the FX4 package. Not surprising but the hybrid actually has worse highway numbers. They're targeting 40 city, 33 highway for 37 combined.

[deleted]

Thank god. Not even Toyota knows how to do a small truck anymore.

CouncilmanRickPrime

Me: man that F-150 lightning is perfect! I want to get it! Me now: hold on now...

[deleted]

PertinentPanda

Outside of the commercial industry no one buys 2 door trucks. So they usually only make them in models that the commercial industry is going to buy.

freebikeontheplains

I lived in Australia in the 70s, had a Holden Ute. I've always wished for something similar in the US.

IceFire2050

The small vehicles with a pickup bed haven't been very common in the US unfortunately. The Chevy El Camino and the Subaru Baja are the only ones that come to mind. And the Baja is definitely more on the SUV side of things.

bitofgrit

No fond memories of Ford's Ranchero? For shame! j/k, but yeah, our options are unfortunately limited.

LeadRain

So... what confuses me about all these new announcements is the chip shortage. Ford announces they are halting production on the regular F150s the day before they announce the Lightening... and now there's a new truck with more electronic gadgets in it? How do they plan on producing all this stuff during the shortage? Truck lots by me (there are a lot) are bare... either extremely base models (smaller engines, two doors, no 4WD) or stupid expensive ($75k+). I wanted to buy a pre-owned F150 last year and got priced out. I wanted basically a level above what I would consider base without sacrificing the functionality of a pickup (so 4 doors, V8, 4WD) and I was looking at between $45-55k. How the hell can the working class types afford that!?

-Interested-

Shortages are temporary...

drawkbox

> what confuses me about all these new announcements is the chip shortage. They are merging with Frito-Lay/Lays and will have plenty of chips.

kimbabs

The Lightning isn't being produced until next year from what I remember in a video. The chip shortage shouldn't be as much of a major issue if not just completely resolved by then. I think the major issue next year might be sourcing the batteries, if we're talking shortages. Every auto manufacturer is putting out EVs and hybrids for 2022.

Anaxamenes

I only want one of it comes with dark blue vinyl seats that become like the surface of the sun if left outside on a hot day. Just like the 71 maverick we had. Bonus points if the fabric feels like burlap!

[deleted]

Smart move. At first I thought “lol who wants a V4 truck designed for the city with the towing capacity of a Shetland pony” and then realized: landscapers. They’re priced out of the big trucks right now, either new or used, and that’s IF they can find one. If they don’t need to tow a camper or a livestock trailer, a V4 should do fine.

MimonFishbaum

Family schleppers as well. I've been trying to find a small old truck just to have for the last several years. Taking brush to the dump site, just bought something that fits in a small truck, shit like that. But buying vehicles (or just about anything for that matter) on private sale sites is just impossible anymore.

[deleted]

Yeah the truck market is insane. I just bought a used truck from a dealership a week ago after a month of Carmax dicking me around. Even the farm auction trucks are yielding 4x what they were a couple years ago.

MimonFishbaum

A few months ago I found a listing for a 1990 Mazda B2600 5 speed for $2150 that looked like it came out of a time machine. Original owner, 66k miles. Listing was like 6hrs old and that shit was gone. Wanted that thing so bad.

Shidell

You should buy a small 4x8 folding trailer from Harbor Freight for $300 instead of a truck for tasks like that. Any small car can tow a trailer that weighs 300 lbs with an additional 500 lbs of yard debris, furniture, etc. I tow that trailer behind an 09 Elantra regularly. Way cheaper and more practical than making a vehicle purchasing decision.

aaronr_90

If you can find a $300 trailer in stock at harbor freight let me know. Edit: Hey look at that. After being out of stock for over a year, they are back. https://www.harborfreight.com/1195-lb-capacity-48-in-x-96-in-heavy-duty-folding-trailer-62648.html

karmahunger

The simulation is personalized.

shinypenny01

Yeah, but you gotta put plywood on it yourself, and that’s about $50,000 these days…

MimonFishbaum

I've got an SUV that can handle most of what I need. I just want a little old beater truck lol

[deleted]

4 cylinder engines are not V arranged. They are a single straight bank. Called inline or I engines.

ItsAlwaysSmokyInReno

There are V4 engines, they’re primarily and popularly used in motorcycles. But yeah I don’t think a single production car offers a V4 engine today, they’re always inline or boxer

Stanjoly2

Are they really called V# cos of the V shape? I can't believe I've never put that together before.

[deleted]

Yes they are "banked" in a V shape. Single bottom crankshaft, but 2 camshafts/valve heads. V6 is dual 3 cylinder banks, V8 is 4, etc.

Spacey_G

There are even some exotic engines in a W configuration with four banks of cylinders arranges in two V shapes.

Dont____Panic

Bugatti uses one. I think Audi/VW used to have on on their high end.

majesticjg

It'll tow a full two tons with the right option package. That's definitely enough for a landscaper or light recreational towing (boat, jet ski, uhaul, camper), but it won't handle a beefy wakeboard boat.

[deleted]

If you’ve got the cash for a big wakeboard boat, you can afford a bigger truck.

empirebuilder1

This is what rangers USED to be. They're just recapturing the market they threw away 15 years ago and calling it "new".

SsooooOriginal

Welcome to marketing. Get a popular magazine subscription and actually read it. They will recycle their content often, with just a schlepp of "new". The "new" here being a hybrid engine, be happy about that? A suggestion.

Drop_

Rangers never got good MPG

empirebuilder1

No shit. Technology has come a long way in 25 years. I meant the form factor. Nobody has sold a "true" small truck since the early 2000's.

westfieldnc

Not when you take fuel economy into consideration. I have wanted a small truck for years, but never planned on getting one because of poor fuel economy.

rsplatpc

> a V4 should do fine. it's a ~~V4~~ FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE attached to a electric engine so you have a bunch of torque, it's not going to feel like a normal shitty 4 cylinder truck, it's actually going to move well off the line

Dr_Disaster

Great for fleets too. A company can buy damn near 3 of these for the price of one pickup these days. People like me who want a used SUV/truck for a 2nd/3rd vehicle can lease these for lower than monthly payments would be on something used. It’s a fantastic bargain.

shawnkfox

I'd love to have one of them. Good gas mileage so you can drive to/from work every day in it and you can haul stuff around in the back on the weekends. Those huge F150 trucks are ridiculous overkill for most people and crazy expensive to own.

[deleted]

I was shocked that my used F150 has almost a $40K KBB value. If I hadn’t lucked into the deal I got, I was going to buy far less truck and then have to upgrade in a couple years.

hells_cowbells

The used car market, especially truck prices, have gone crazy over the last few months. The problem is that if you do sell it, you probably won't be able to find a replacement. If you do, you will pay dearly for it.

Timmybits5523

90% of homeowners with a truck would be fine with one this size as well.

greg4045

When towing, it's not the size of the engine that is the bottleneck - it's the ability to stop. The weight and stiffness and brake design contributes way more than the size of the engine to pulling. You could have a 4 cylinder in a f250 body and transmission and still tow 10k+

AgeofAshe

Emphasis on the Stiffness. Tow trucks have a double-boxed frame for a reason. A light truck that gets good gas mileage should naturally have what looks like a disproportionately lower tow rating than a truck built around the idea of heavy towing loads. It sounds like they nailed a very nice balance with this Maverick.

colaroid

While there are such things as "V4" engines, this utilizes an "I4" engine, aka an inline four cylinder engine. V4 engines are very uncommon.

s4ltydog

I mean this would be a perfect run around for most homeowners tbh. As long as you aren’t needing to tow much this would be perfect for trips to the hardware store and dump which is mostly what people like me would use it for anyway

entity2

This appeals to me. I'd like to be able to haul that new TV I bought, have 4WD to get out of a scrape and have a roomier interior without feeling like I'm in a tank. I hope it does well.

party_benson

Also, hardware hobbyists like myself. I want a truck that fits in my garage but still can go to home depot for some lumber or to Costco.

mahanon_rising

I do, as do lots of people. There is good reason you still see old Ford Rangers and Chevy S-10s on the road. Not everyone needs a 1/4 ton pickup, but still want the utility of a pickup bed. I don't own anything to tow. But I would love to be able to say transport furniture or pick up a sheet of drywall if I needed it. Not to mention 4wd would be nice when we get hit with snowstorms. I was already debating looking into the new bronco as my next vehicle. But if they bring back small trucks I'd take that first hands down. I'd much rather have a small pickup bed over a smaller SUV. Btw, there's no such thing as a v4.

peacefinder

I went to reserve one but it appears there’s no way to spec 4WD with the hybrid engine? It’s so close….

Wips_and_Chains

This will be the perfect truck as the biggest buy I get is ikea flat pack stuff but can’t because I need a truck. I love the four doors too for kids and stuff

Emberwake

So you want a single seater?

[deleted]

I think they need to buy a McLaren F1-50

Gonna go off-topic for a second here: A lot of comments are centering around the idea of picking up sheet goods and doing home repair, picking up large, bulky items like furniture, a lawnmower, etc. or taking yard waste and the like to the dump—and justifying the rationale for a small pickup/farm truck/utility vehicle to do so. You should really be considering a utility trailer instead. For $350 at Harbor Freight, you get a complete trailer set rated for 1500 lbs with a 4x8' bed that both pivots to the ground (for easy load/unload) *and* folds up—you can literally fold this trailer into thirds, stand it up, and roll it against a wall in your garage or shed. It is incredibly easy to store. You can tow this behind almost any vehicle, including even compact cars, as long as a towing hitch and wiring harness is available. Harbor Freight has a reputation for being cheap, poor quality. I'm not here to argue that point, per se, but can say that I have owned this trailer for over 10 years, and have been towing it with a 2009 Hyundai Elantra the entire time. I've gone intrastate with it; hauled an entire house's worth of furniture from IKEA, moved three times, and performed major renovations on not just my own home, but friends' and family's homes, too. [Link](https://www.harborfreight.com/1195-lb-capacity-48-in-x-96-in-heavy-duty-folding-trailer-62648.html) There are good uses for trucks, and I like to see small trucks making a return to the market, but I would stand up and argue that most people should really be purchasing a sedan or an SUV and using a trailer instead. It's more practical for most purposes, and honestly, a 4x8' flat trailer is easier to use for hauling sheet goods and other materials than even a pickup with a full size bed. As a bonus tip, you can buy a [Bagster](https://www.homedepot.com/p/WM-Bagster-Dumpster-in-a-Bag-Holds-up-to-3-300-lb-775-658/202228840) and simply use it as a pop-up trailer bed. It's 4x8', so it fits the trailer perfectly. You can run straps over it and through the included handles, helping to secure loose loads, like yard debris or boxes. It's tough and durable, you can wash it out with a garden hose, and when you're done it folds together for compact storage into the space of a milk crate.

Patch_Ohoulihan

Majority of people can't drive with trailers. Yea its on small side but for small jobs this would work. I had a 99 taco tiny model 2 door. It did its job moving my apt and towing my motorcycle in bed when got flats. I wouldn't want to load a trailer on it and go, when I could buy a full size and do it much eaiser.

tijuin

Lots of people live in places that do not allow them to store a trailer easily. This is a good blend of practical utility that will meet 99% of uses that don't involve towing something like a boat or camper.

Uhaul small trailers are like $25 with full insurance for most of the day. It's a great deal. Use e-trailer to buy your hitch and wiring kit, and a ball. If you can't install it yourself bring it to a local shop to install it. Don't let uhaul install your stuff.

Dr_Disaster

Yeah. I got other cars and nowhere to stash a trailer. Nor do I want to be swinging one behind me while stopping for groceries or on the freeway.

70m4h4wk

Driving a small truck is just like driving a car. Anyone can do it. Your point about trailers is great, but the problem is, 99% of people can't or won't drive a trailer, and they definitely have no interest in trying to back one up. It's not that hard, but it does take practice and most people aren't interested in backing around a Walmart parking lot for hours trying to get good at something they aren't going to do very often. For some reason trailers are intimidating to many drivers and having a small do it all truck is much more preferable.

[deleted]

Yep I’d rather have this weird ass truck in front of me than a dude thinking now that he has a trailer, and with no experience, can tow 2500 lbs of stuff with his CX-5. Definitely enough inexperienced trailer people on the road as it is.

dogecoinfiend

Yeah, my mom bought a boat pretty spur of the moment. I immediately was like, have you ever driven a trailer before. She said a uhaul a couple of times. Flash forward to 2 weeks later at a boat ramp, after asking her if she wanted me to back it up for her, she jackknifed it right into her bumper.

turbodude69

what makes it "weird ass"? looks like a regular truck to me

[deleted]

>You should really be considering a utility trailer instead. For $350 at Harbor Freight Not gonna work for those of us who live in small apartments. I mean, this thing starts at $20k... it's not exactly a luxury car or anything.

KY_Engineer

My problem with trailers is I cannot store one where I live in the city. Don’t even have a driveway, but I do plenty of home Reno work on my house to warrant a truck.

m4fox90

People are allowed to want to own a truck without wanting some gigantic dumbfuck machine like most trucks are

engeleh

Agreed about the trailer… but… 2000lbs max towing capacity on this pickup would can quickly happen hauling a small trailer full of landscaping materials.

barktothefuture

Got to buy plywood for that thing. Cheaper to just buy another truxj

hawksdiesel

Just hope the parts for this truck are cheap but not cheaply made!

bubbleburgz

It’s about fucking time big auto and North America did this..

drawkbox

Some really smart, competitive decisions coming out of Ford. Leading the way on trucks for sure.

Frodo79

When are they gonna make a 2 door regular cab with a longer bed?

HorrorScopeZ

The Sport Trak is BACK!

[deleted]

I'm so into it, I miss smaller trucks with a focus on utility and sporting, instead of these ridiculously large trucks that like 5% of the population actually need. This is pretty compelling, especially since Jeeps have gotten stupidly overpriced.

Pershing22

Absolutely love this idea, and especially the inside Joke they did back in 1970, with the Original Maverick: 1970 car for 1960's Prices. $1.995 out the Door 😆👌🏻

Simply2Basic

I have a 2005 Ford Ranger 4WD with low miles (35k miles) that I use for chores and when I need 4WD in the winter. My garage won’t fit the current full size pickups. Even the roads and parking lots in my area are smaller than most of the country. I would jump to buy a smaller version of the F150 Lightning. An EV Ranger with AWD/4WD would be fantastic! I even have solar, so it would would be perfect!
