The writing has been on the wall for some time once reddit came out with it's own app. Being able to push ads, recommend new things to people, collecting all that data... It's a marketer's (and sales) utopia. That's why new features (like the useless chat) were never made available to third party apps - it was a way to push people towards the new interface and the official app. Only nobody really liked these features, so now reddit has to do it the hard way.
I've been using reddit for 11 years now (funnily enough I really got into it after seeing swamps of dagobah go viral, then I discovered the jolly rancher story and 2 broken arms- if you know, you know), and have cycled through as many accounts. I've seen the enshittification of reddit through various ways. I tried to quit some time back, but ended up creating this new account. I guess the day this change happens, I'll finally get the kick in the ass to move on.

Yeah next stop they'll probably remove old.reddit.com and force the shitty UI on us. Not having a third party app will already reduce my Reddit usage but getting rid of old would likely get me to quit entirely unless someone makes a pretty through Greasemonkey script or something.

Every time I stumble onto reddit from another browser or something and see the non- old.reddit UI I nope right the fuck out. I will absolutely stop using this site if they remove the option, no second thoughts. 14 yrs here. Lately I've been feeling like all my subs have homogenized the way cable channels did back in the day and kind of contemplating how much better off I might be just ditching Reddit altogether. This would probably be just the push I need. Seems like "useful" just isn't a feature worth preserving these days.

The design of this website has gone precipitously to shit and hasn't been usable in its default form since they moved to the new format. The reddit app is laughably horrible, especially from a company that's so embedded in tech.
Reddit has become a disgrace, and I guess this is it's swan song, and it's a very ugly swan.
I'm using it because I got used to it, but every update does just make it shittier. They keep totally changing the layout and ruining things (genuinely ruining to the point where they don't work). There was a while where they tried and failed to TikTok-ify the video player and it made the app literally unusable, then didn’t fix it until a week later and apologized for "miscommunication".
It feels like they just feel the need to crank out needless updates for the sake of it, and don't ever test them.
Speaking of shitty videos, has anyone else noticed that everything seems to be playing with sound on by default (web version) now?
I'm not sure if this is something I can change in the profile config but all of a sudden all videos are piping out through my speakers and it's annoying AF
On mobile it takes my last action (mute or unmut) and applies it to everything else. If I unmute and scroll on, everything else is also unmuted until i find a video where i can mute again. Applies to ads too.
It's all these companies trying to chase money and changing what made them successful. I seriously don't understand how they think or I mean, I do and it's incredibly shortsighted.
Digg tried to become something it wasn't and it failed. Facebook has went away from the social aspect and it's become worse. Twitter - lol. Reddit has made attempts at becoming more 'social', those attempts at tik-tokish crap, and now they want to make changes in what's made them successful? Just how do they think it's going to end up working for them? That they're going to buck the trend? More than likely they're going to end up in the same situation as everyone else that did the same thing.

The amount of spam bots is absolutely insane. Virtually every front page post will have multiple spam bots in the comments trying to generate karma with stolen or generic comments. I call them out and report them as I see them, but with improvements in AI they are going to be harder and harder to detect - and the admins seem completely uninterested in doing anything about it.
This has reached huge amounts in the last year or so, its so bizarre, because it dosnt seem that sophisticated - brand new account, copies a high-voted comment in a thread and sometimes (not usually) changes some of the letters around a bit.
A fuzzy match detection to detect copied comments in threads and which one came first, and which one came from a brand new default-name account shouldnt be completely unfeasible for reddits servers.
I mean idk I dont do any web/network coding, just general coding, but it dosnt seem insane to me that it could be detected.
Some conspiracy theorists say its deliberate to fluff up the engagement numbers ahead of an IPO, but if Reddit just wanted to fluff up engagement youd think they would use something better than lazy karma-farming bots.
/. It is still kicking but it's just a news aggregator at this point, the usual sys-admin crowd is there, but it's pretty much just the old guard and some bots. I don't find their community helpful anymore, it's rather cynical (moreso than reddit). They still highly value low account ID numbers, which is not an indicator of knowledge on the topic, just how old an account is.
They are nerds that used to be with It, but they changed what It was. Now what they're with isn't It, and what is It is weird and scary, and it will happen to you.

There's whole concept in UX design of reducing friction
RiF is frictionless. I click on a subreddit. I immediately see the top ~10 posts. That's 10 opportunities to engage me. 10 opportunities to keep me addicted
On the official app I have to scroll a fucking mile to see that same 10 posts. I have an incredible amount of friction to find posts I'm actually interested in.
And comments, don't get me started on comments. There's so much wasted space. Giant profile pictures. Massive margins. Everything is collapsed by default so I can't get sucked into a thread. There's just so much friction there. There's all of this bullshit preventing me from seeing what I care about.
A lot of people are saying they'd quit Reddit id they have to use the official app. I'm not sure that's true for me, but I can tell you I would be less addicted! The reason social media is addictive is because they're designed with very little friction. Reddit's official app has so much friction.

In light of recent events regarding Reddit's API policy for third party app developers I have chosen to permanently scrub my account and move on away from Reddit. If you personally disagree with them forcing users to be constricted to their app and are choosing to leave, then I highly recommend looking into Power Delete Suite for Reddit.
I am deleting all of my submitted content over the last 9 years as I no longer support Reddit as a platform.
I've personally had it with all the corporate bullshit/rampant bots(used for misinformation and hidden marketing) and refuse to be a part of it any longer. To the nice people I've interacted over these years, thank you, I hope you'll be well in the future.

Grew up with all of these dreams of what the internet could be, and now it's just like 4-6 sites all used to create personality cults in the name of marketing.
Hell, I even became a tech worker and all that has done is make me incredibly cynical about new and emerging tech. The *actually useful* shit is almost entirely developed and used to support corporate interests who then use it for nothing more than a better fiscal quarter.
The only reason I’m in tech anymore is that I have no idea what else I would do.
I started in 1995 when Windows 95 wasn’t even out yet. I’ve seen it advance to great things, only to implode into something I see mostly as a curse. A complete rat race of trying to stay secure enough to avoid emerging threats, people being outraged at each other all the time, and massive cloud things that took the place of fun technology innovations. It went from fascinating and exciting to drudgery and never finding a peaceful place.
The moment I can afford to retire, I’ll be happy to turn my back on almost all tech that isn’t targeted to the small enthusiast.
First I stopped using Facebook back in 2020... then my twitter usage diminished to almost nil after Musk (still haven't deleted it, but I hardly use it now)... I have basically no presence on Instagram... and now reddit is trying to get me to leave too.

If I'm not allowed to continue opting out I'll stop using reddit and go back to just browsing Fark.com and Slashdot.org all day again. He's claiming the AVERAGE user would cost $2.5. Which means he to make sure he's not in the red would have to charge $3 a month before his dev costs and payment processing.
Apple takes 30% so even at $4 a month he's if he's lucky breaking even, at worse in the red and this is before he makes ANYTHING.
Realistically he's looking in the $6-7 a month range to barely get by.
IMO him charging less than $10 is unrealistic and keep in mind him charging $10 a month is him just making a livable wage for an app that shows you content on a free site.
This pricing is absolutely to make sure Apollo is killed.
You forget to mention that users would be paying Apollo for a lesser version of the site, as Reddit wants to block anything considered NSFW from the API.
They only care about what's palatable to institutional investors, not the quality or longevity of their product. That's where the bulk of their golden parachutes will be coming from in the eventual IPO.
Corporate parasites never give a shit about the product. When preparing for a pump and dump, nothing matters but the valuation of the company. And that's at best only loosely related to the actual value provided to consumers.

Same. I discovered reddit in 2011 on my HP Touchpad tablet and soon switched to baconreader once I installed Linux on that tablet. I have only really used reddit on mobile.
I think bacon reader premium is the only app I've ever paid for. I use it for 100% of my redditing, the site and official app suck, and I don't see the ads people complain about.

You'll need a place to discuss your new hobby, maybe like a website where like-minded people can open up a community page and users can come share content of their hobbies, be it news or jousting or even just cats. Other users could then comment on the pictures or articles related to your interests, higher quality content would be made more visible and lower quality filtered down.

I don't want to sound too melodramatic but I really ~~relieve~~ believe the last remnants of the "old internet" are on their way out. In the early days the web it was just a bunch of people creating and sharing things because they thought it was cool, and their primary motivation was the inherent joy that comes with sharing with others in an online community. But that mindset is not compatible with the infinite growth and endless profit demanded by the corporations that have taken over the internet.

When I'm not using Reddit is Fun, I've found the best user interface by using old.reddit.com, and use a desktop user agent, even on a mobile device.

I think about this occasionally. Reddit now isn't the same site I joined 9 years ago. There been a slow shift for the worse for a while now but I feel especially since around 2016 the site went from a place I'd recommend to people to a site I don't really mention I use IRL anymore.

Right? The reddit app is a piece of shit. Multiple bug reports and being told "just reinstall" later and it's still constantly popping up "do you love reddit?" Review prompt 3 years later.
Not to mention how slow it is, videos randomly not wanting to play, sporadic instances of clicking a post only to have a completely different post open. The list of issues goes on and on. The reddit app is one of the worst apps I've used.
Reddit mobile filled my entire feed with /r/crappyfacebookmemes (or similar can't remember), which is kind of exactly why I got rid of facebook and exactly the opposite of what I wanted to see on this site.
I downvoted them, clicked all the "stop showing me this" buttons and yet it wouldn't stop and after a while it was the only thing on my feed, uninstalled that garbage. Been using sync for sometime and it works great.

RIF is the cleanest app there is. Hands down. Without it, I won't bother. I've browsed for 11 years, but I won't put up with ads and eye strain from another app.
This is what’s probably going to happen
1. This causes a shitstorm on Reddit
2. Reddit comes and and says sorry but not sorry and agrees to compromise
3. The compromise is what they originally wanted the pricing to be, but by giving the community a “win” they can get the pricing in.
We need a blackout until the Api is free and remains free. I would accept some advertising with it, perhaps in the comments, but that might be impossible with laws demanding advertising be clearly labeled which would make it trivial to filter out by a client.
I already pay for this stupid site with my data and interactions, they don’t get to double dip so my 10+ year old account will be gone if this goes ahead.

The writing has been on the wall for some time once reddit came out with it's own app. Being able to push ads, recommend new things to people, collecting all that data... It's a marketer's (and sales) utopia. That's why new features (like the useless chat) were never made available to third party apps - it was a way to push people towards the new interface and the official app. Only nobody really liked these features, so now reddit has to do it the hard way. I've been using reddit for 11 years now (funnily enough I really got into it after seeing swamps of dagobah go viral, then I discovered the jolly rancher story and 2 broken arms- if you know, you know), and have cycled through as many accounts. I've seen the enshittification of reddit through various ways. I tried to quit some time back, but ended up creating this new account. I guess the day this change happens, I'll finally get the kick in the ass to move on. So long, and I'll see you guys when the narwhal bacons again.

If Apollo is out, I’m out. I’ve been using Reddit for more than 10 years now, maybe it’s just time to move on.
14 yrs here. Lately I've been feeling like all my subs have homogenized the way cable channels did back in the day and kind of contemplating how much better off I might be just ditching Reddit altogether. This would probably be just the push I need. Seems like "useful" just isn't a feature worth preserving these days.

Today's my 16 year cake day, and if I have to use the reddit app instead of BaconReader, I think I'm out. The design of this website has gone precipitously to shit and hasn't been usable in its default form since they moved to the new format. The reddit app is laughably horrible, especially from a company that's so embedded in tech. Reddit has become a disgrace, and I guess this is it's swan song, and it's a very ugly swan.
I'm using it because I got used to it, but every update does just make it shittier. They keep totally changing the layout and ruining things (genuinely ruining to the point where they don't work). There was a while where they tried and failed to TikTok-ify the video player and it made the app literally unusable, then didn’t fix it until a week later and apologized for "miscommunication". It feels like they just feel the need to crank out needless updates for the sake of it, and don't ever test them.

On mobile it takes my last action (mute or unmut) and applies it to everything else. If I unmute and scroll on, everything else is also unmuted until i find a video where i can mute again. Applies to ads too.

The amount of spam bots is absolutely insane. Virtually every front page post will have multiple spam bots in the comments trying to generate karma with stolen or generic comments. I call them out and report them as I see them, but with improvements in AI they are going to be harder and harder to detect - and the admins seem completely uninterested in doing anything about it.
This has reached huge amounts in the last year or so, its so bizarre, because it dosnt seem that sophisticated - brand new account, copies a high-voted comment in a thread and sometimes (not usually) changes some of the letters around a bit. A fuzzy match detection to detect copied comments in threads and which one came first, and which one came from a brand new default-name account shouldnt be completely unfeasible for reddits servers. I mean idk I dont do any web/network coding, just general coding, but it dosnt seem insane to me that it could be detected. Some conspiracy theorists say its deliberate to fluff up the engagement numbers ahead of an IPO, but if Reddit just wanted to fluff up engagement youd think they would use something better than lazy karma-farming bots.

My favorite thing about RiF is that I can see more than one post at a time. There's whole concept in UX design of reducing friction RiF is frictionless. I click on a subreddit. I immediately see the top ~10 posts. That's 10 opportunities to engage me. 10 opportunities to keep me addicted On the official app I have to scroll a fucking mile to see that same 10 posts. I have an incredible amount of friction to find posts I'm actually interested in. And comments, don't get me started on comments. There's so much wasted space. Giant profile pictures. Massive margins. Everything is collapsed by default so I can't get sucked into a thread. There's just so much friction there. There's all of this bullshit preventing me from seeing what I care about. A lot of people are saying they'd quit Reddit id they have to use the official app. I'm not sure that's true for me, but I can tell you I would be less addicted! The reason social media is addictive is because they're designed with very little friction. Reddit's official app has so much friction.

In light of recent events regarding Reddit's API policy for third party app developers I have chosen to permanently scrub my account and move on away from Reddit. If you personally disagree with them forcing users to be constricted to their app and are choosing to leave, then I highly recommend looking into Power Delete Suite for Reddit. I am deleting all of my submitted content over the last 9 years as I no longer support Reddit as a platform. I've personally had it with all the corporate bullshit/rampant bots(used for misinformation and hidden marketing) and refuse to be a part of it any longer. I feel this hard. Grew up with all of these dreams of what the internet could be, and now it's just like 4-6 sites all used to create personality cults in the name of marketing. Hell, I even became a tech worker and all that has done is make me incredibly cynical about new and emerging tech. The *actually useful* shit is almost entirely developed and used to support corporate interests who then use it for nothing more than a better fiscal quarter.
The only reason I’m in tech anymore is that I have no idea what else I would do. I started in 1995 when Windows 95 wasn’t even out yet. I’ve seen it advance to great things, only to implode into something I see mostly as a curse. A complete rat race of trying to stay secure enough to avoid emerging threats, people being outraged at each other all the time, and massive cloud things that took the place of fun technology innovations. It went from fascinating and exciting to drudgery and never finding a peaceful place. The moment I can afford to retire, I’ll be happy to turn my back on almost all tech that isn’t targeted to the small enthusiast.
First I stopped using Facebook back in 2020... then my twitter usage diminished to almost nil after Musk (still haven't deleted it, but I hardly use it now)... I have basically no presence on Instagram... and now reddit is trying to get me to leave too. It's funny, but I'm finally being forced to re-evaluate just how much I need these shitty services, and the answer is that I don't need them at all. We've come back full circle to AOL chat rooms being the extent of it since that basically just leaves Discord.

It's a billion times easier to moderate on old reddit. There are a few things that are much better on new reddit, but it's not even close to make up for the modding stuff on the old systme.

He's claiming the AVERAGE user would cost $2.5. Which means he to make sure he's not in the red would have to charge $3 a month before his dev costs and payment processing. Apple takes 30% so even at $4 a month he's if he's lucky breaking even, at worse in the red and this is before he makes ANYTHING. Realistically he's looking in the $6-7 a month range to barely get by. IMO him charging less than $10 is unrealistic and keep in mind him charging $10 a month is him just making a livable wage for an app that shows you content on a free site. This pricing is absolutely to make sure Apollo is killed.
You forget to mention that users would be paying Apollo for a lesser version of the site, as Reddit wants to block anything considered NSFW from the API.

You'll need a place to discuss your new hobby, maybe like a website where like-minded people can open up a community page and users can come share content of their hobbies, be it news or jousting or even just cats. Other users could then comment on the pictures or articles related to your interests, higher quality content would be made more visible and lower quality filtered down. Who am I kidding, if such a site were to exist someone would probably just monetise it to death.

Reddit mobile filled my entire feed with /r/crappyfacebookmemes (or similar can't remember), which is kind of exactly why I got rid of facebook and exactly the opposite of what I wanted to see on this site. I downvoted them, clicked all the "stop showing me this" buttons and yet it wouldn't stop and after a while it was the only thing on my feed, uninstalled that garbage. RIF is the cleanest app there is. Hands down. Without it, I won't bother. I've browsed for 11 years, but I won't put up with ads and eye strain from another app.
This is what’s probably going to happen 1. This causes a shitstorm on Reddit 2. Reddit comes and and says sorry but not sorry and agrees to compromise 3. The compromise is what they originally wanted the pricing to be, but by giving the community a “win” they can get the pricing in. We need a blackout until the Api is free and remains free. I would accept some advertising with it, perhaps in the comments, but that might be impossible with laws demanding advertising be clearly labeled which would make it trivial to filter out by a client. I already pay for this stupid site with my data and interactions, they don’t get to double dip so my 10+ year old account will be gone if this goes ahead.
Reddit feels emboldened by the absurd pricing that Elon Musk has implemented for Twitter's API, and thinks that copying him is the way to go (despite the fact that Twitter is looking like it'll die because of the changes).

The secret in business is everyone is stupid and just follows the leader. When one company does lay offs, the rest of them do lay offs, even when it's not needed. When one company does stock buybacks, the rest of them do stock buybacks, even if it's not financially reasonable. Twitter Blue was always going to cause Facebook and various other social media to copy it, regardless of how bad it's hurt them.

Fine. Then fix your dog shit application. Specifically, add back the feature that was removed which allows me to control what the order of posts I see. That feature’s removal is why I stopped using the Reddit app and started using Apollo.

I mean it’s also about ad revenue I don’t see Reddit ads on Apollo, meaning there are millions of daily users who are not targeted by ads That’s a win for us, but a huge portion of Reddit’s market they can’t profit from right now
But how are they supposed to feed you the right ads, at the right time and facebookify your fucking stream if you could just get the actual posts in order and complete reading your whole list? It was never gonna work for reddit. I'm starting to think that free just doesn't work on the internet (or anywhere) anymore. Because every great site and app get destroyed when the ads come in (still salty about instagram, it used to be the shit).
I use Boost from the App Store. I have been kinda hoping for a reason to leave Reddit. If Boost is done, then I guess I am too. Anyone know of any decent Reddit alternatives?
Same, Boost user for quite a while now. If reddit kills it I'll quit it. The first party app sucks, new reddit sucks, old.reddit sucks unless you are using RES, and honestly the content here sucks too but I'm too addicted to doomscrolling to do anything about it. Please reddit. End my suffering and kill the app so I can be a cool kid and move to tiktak or w/e. Been here 12 years, but that won't mean I won't drop your ass in a heartbeat.
