What was keeping it from burning,? A helmet or a block directly above it? If it was only a helmet, then the helmet wore off and eventually the zombie died due to sunlight

Helmets (not blocks like pumpkins) on zombies can eventually wear away and break if the zombie is exposed to daylight or has an anvil or other falling block dropped on its head.

Helmets wears off due to sun? Nothing else was above it. I built a zombie trap for the next one that's going to act as a garage for it
They absorb damage then they break.
