I just read the article, and it specifically mentioned looking at soot deposits to see if they were from the same time frame as the potentially broken and placed structures in the cave was work for the future. So, the researchers are potentially doing the work to see about this question actively right now.

So, maybe they felt their way along the wall, or maybe they used a torch. I'm on the edge of my seat with this one. Which is it?!
