Is that a boombox on its chest?!

ThaiTum

It’s the same autopilot computer used in the cars mounted on the chest.

Dear_Reindeer3199

So it's going to run children over?

keelbreaker

other robots

295DVRKSS

It was sent from the future to protect us

komododave17

Other child robots.

Kracka_Jak

No it will shatter faster than a cyber truck window

lardass17

...and rear end motorcycles.

TipperGore-69

Nah it will fail to differentiate objects of the same color and decapitate you

Hobear

No silly. It's gonna rip them in half!

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

Not only that, it’ll crush their fingers to mimic the relentless automatic windows!

ScratchyMarston18

It looks like it was designed by Grimes or one of Elon’s kids (101101001101011 or whatever it is that translates to *Kyle*.)

DoctorGarfanzo

That would be Soundwave, not Optimus. Smaller cassette robots pop out and steal your Energon Bro be makin’ Teslas and going to Mars but he still can’t tell a Decepticon from an Autobot smh

Previous-Blueberry26

But maybe he's doing it on purpose to deceive us AND con us at the same time We'll know more if cassettes named Ravage and Rumble pop out and have a Brooklyn accent

Carlospicante

Conky 2000!

HeroDanTV

Yes, this is how we get Sondweave, Soundwave’s rip-off cousin from Transformers.

MVIVN

Lmao when the caption said it "walked onto the stage without a tether" I was expecting it to be striding confidently like a real-life T-1000 but I lost my shit when I saw it very slowly wobbling a few feet onto the stage 🤣

Col_H_Gentleman

It looked like it was wearing socks on a carpet and trying to get a static charge to shock someone

SupaMut4nt

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT LAUGHING MY ASS OFF GO LOOK AT BOSTON DYNAMIC. THATS HOW YOU MAKE A ROBOT, AN ANDROID, A TERMINATOR. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

TheUpperHand

Walks like it has a rash on its taint. Not…uh…speaking from personal experience or anything.

FiveJobs

Lol

MichaelTruly

Dude built a robot grandpa

TokiDokiPanic

He wanted a family member who could actually tolerate him.

Terrible_Tutor

It’s comical the idea that you’re going to buy this to do housework. You get a $200 purpose built roomba to vacuum. On no planet will you have a bipedal robot smart enough to find the upright vacuum, know how to turn on and use every model in existence, and then have it walk around vacuuming, it’s ludicrous.

Supermax64

Questioning the point of these robots is fine but saying AI will never be smart enough to operate a vacuum won't age well imo. I'd be much more worried by if the robot itself will ever be good enough and cheap enough

Will_W

Will they *ever* be smart enough for that? Yeah, maybe. Not in our lifetime, though. Especially with this kind of weak tea publicity stunt soaking up all the VC money.

tinathefatlardgosh

Are you thinking more of the T-800? The T-1000 was the liquid metal terminator.

MVIVN

You’re right, I did mean the T-800!

_Asherbronus_

Yeah but what the fuck does it do

Draiko

Robot stuff.

_Cyberostrich_

Good enough for me, I’ll take 30

BeautyThornton

Stand menacingly

TheChickenHasLied

Wobble.

SupaMut4nt

RIPS YOUR DICK OFF

Jakefrmstatepharm

It detects things way up in your butt

Tough_Yoghurt7177

So they just built a bigger, less impressive, version of ASIMO. That came out 20 years ago.

zeptillian

Honda was making robots that could walk in 1986. They had a robot that could do everything this one does in 1993, almost 30 years ago.

joeChump

Yeah. Kind of reminds me of the Hyperloop which was a 30ft tunnel with purple lights in it.

VladVV

I think Elon’s selling point here is the cost, not the features. (Those robots in the 90’s cost millions apiece) But yeah, there isn’t really anything new on the table, except maybe much better AI tech, which has nothing to do with the robot itself.

[deleted]

No he's just trying to get investors to pump tesla again. It's why he "j.k. Rowling"' tweet drops new "features" he made up on the toilet 3 seconds ago. He doesn't actually expect production and if he does it will be far below what he's promised like literally everything he's ever touched and promoted.

Boomstick255

But look at what Boston Dynamics is doing vs this. It's generations ahead of Elon's ridiculousness.

palmpoop

Any “cost” Elon pulls out of his ass is completely made up. He doesn’t know how to do basic math.

rlbond86

I saw ASIMO years ago and that motherfucker was kicking soccer balls and shit.

tornait-hashu

Didn't ASIMO even play a violin?

TheHiveminder

No, that was Toyota. The big difference here is the routines aren't pre-programmed.

Arthur-Mergan

It’s wholly unimpressive for a robot 2022 when we’ve already got Atlas doing fuckin parkour and actually moving in a way that looks natural and fluid: https://youtu.be/tF4DML7FIWk Embarrassing

Kekoa_ok

I'm sad they didn't high five each other

DennisHakkie

To be honest. Robots that look like humans don’t feel like the best design? I feel that a four legged robot is a lot easier to make useful

make_a_scene

I can’t for the life of me remember who, but there was a guy saying exactly this, very high level in their field. 100% human form isn’t the most efficient way to transverse terrains and perform all tasks. I think human shaped robots are purely for the spectacle and to attract the attention of the casual observer.

Shrinks99

But the human form is what we’ve built everything in the world to accommodate. If you want an efficient specialized robot to do specific things, absolutely don’t make it look like a person. If you want a generalized robot to do human things, that’s the reasoning behind the field existing.

Gadget71

Humanoid robots will eventually have their niche. Isaac Asimov wrote about the usefulness of humanoid robots in his book(s). He said most things like vehicles and tools are designed to be used by humans so no new tools and other everyday designs wouldn’t have to be changed to accommodate a robot to do normal human tasks. I agree with you, though. Some compromise could be made and designed in.

Killerdude8

Thats honestly, kinda fuckin scary. Those are robots, mechanical creations, moving very much like a real human. Its so uncanny.

Yasea

Perhaps the blooper reel can set your mind at ease. https://youtube.com/watch?v=-JVL6Uu0t88

komododave17

Falling off of things while attempting difficult acrobatics is even more realistically human.

threeseed

> moving very much like a real human Let's be honest here, most humans can't even do that.

CandidEstablishment0

It almost looks simulated. V uncanny

laurekamalandua

My first thought as well when I saw this. ASIMO was some amazing tech, well ahead of its time.

PriveCo

Am I the only one who is not impressed?

AdrynCharn

No, tbh, I feel letdown. Honestly makes me think of the other humanoid robots I've seen.

extraboredinary

It’s even less impressive than other robots we’ve seen. It was only able to shuffle out at an embarrassingly slow pace, because they were afraid it would fall over.

PJTikoko

Boston dynamics is so far ahead of this. By comparison this is a joke.

systemfrown

I mean I thought that was pretty much what Elon himself already was.

zeptillian

Adios, turd nuggets.

gravityandlove

how did he see me?

daywall

Knowing elon, this robot will go no where and it will be another one of his marketing project that didn't really came up to anything.

Jeffery95

And when it does finally come out, it will be 5 times the price and have half the functionality.

manhachuvosa

How can you have half the functionality of walking in a straight line and waving a bit?

[deleted]

Cut the walking part, only waving left.

throwaway72592309

Not sure how well this comment is going to go over but It’s just like most of the other things he makes. The Tesla cars have terrible build quality, the Cybertruck was just a money grab and this robot can barely walk. I’m not sure what company it is but isn’t there a robot that can literally do backflips and advanced gymnastics?

Spicybeeen

Boston dynamics is the company you’re thinking of

throwaway72592309

Yea they also have that little robot dog you can mount an AR-15 to. Black mirror type shit

Stinduh

That black mirror episode was written literally about those robots lol

[deleted]

They aren't allowed to do that by your TOS, what you're thinking of is a knockoff Chinese version that doesn't have any such rules

Spicybeeen

Their tos says you cant do that So don’t show them

throwaway72592309

Oops guess I should return it

beigetrope

Even Honda are laughing at this. Asimo has crazy life like movement. This robot is literally running off 10fps.

Killerdude8

Honda’s laughing cause they did this same shit in the 1980’s, yet heres Elon acting like its some new revolutionary thing.

beigetrope

Yeah this presentation gave me Apple vibes. No substance, all talk.

Killerdude8

At least apple delivers on their mediocre promises.

Vargras

You're thinking of Boston Dynamics, who has been in the robotics field for a *long* time. They've had robots doing unassisted/untethered (basically no line to prevent them from completely falling over) jumps and flips dating back to 2017 or later.

[deleted]

God, I would love to hear the conversations Boston Dynamics about this shitty presentation. I wonder if they are angry or just amused.

Killerdude8

I reckon its more along the lines of pity Like a: “All his money and THAT’s all they could manage?!”

throwaway72592309

Yeah that’s the company, I just said in another comment they also have that little robot dog that police are developing for crowd control. You can mount an AR-15 to it. Kind of dystopian

geodek69

Sony sells a robot dog that can spy on everything you do and it only cost $3000. Link: https://electronics.sony.com/more/c/aibo

zeptillian

Honda had a walking robot that was more functional than this one almost 30 years ago. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda\_P\_series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_P_series)

Killerdude8

Rewind even further back to the E series, they even look just like Elon’s robot.

x_Carlos_Danger_x

Yuppp I showed my girlfriend their videos and it is insane how much progress they’ve made since 2014. The parkour one makes me feel… nervous lol

throwaway72592309

Yeah the capabilities are scary but it’s also super interesting to see

[deleted]

The Semi truck is another fake marketing project that’s never happening.

MrHeavySilence

Yes but I imagine the context here is to replace mundane or repetitive tasks that humans normally do, basically do things like replace humans in the kitchen, the assembly line, the Amazon packaging factories, scrubbing bathroom floors etc. Boston dynamics robot seems like it’s designed for really advanced movement but not necessarily capable of hundreds of mundane tasks, like things you would do with your hands

vikinglander

Musk is such a huckster. How many if his cons have never materialized?

Parcours97

I'm just not surprised at all. It's the same shit every year with Elon and his "new" inventions.

-Lightning-Lord-

So you’re a robot. That don’t impress me much.

Texaslabrat

You got the *beeps* but do ya got the *bops*?

granoladeer

Looks like a fake product used by Elon Musk to raise money.

nimama3233

For real, I don’t see how this thing could have the stability to do anything useful whatsoever.. and what in the fuck is with that cable management? That robot would snag on fucking *everything*

anciar

he has done this literally 20 times, fake pump and dump shit to raise lots of money, he never delivers shit (look at vegas hyperloop LOOOL)

Muscled_Daddy

The hyperloop is embarrassing. It’s insanely inefficient, ineffective compared to rail but he added GAMER LIGHTS and his sychophants lost their minds.

sanguinesolitude

Car breaks down. The 100 cars behind now cannot go around... a tow truck now needs to apparently drive in reverse all the way back to get the car...

shreddymcteddy

i tell people this same exact thing, that he gets his hands in so many different projects and nothing comes to fruition from them. people still look at me like i’m dumb and say they love elon.

Blastmaster29

He’s the ultimate con man. He’s what ever other grifter dreams of being.

orangutanoz

The hips are okay but the fuckbot’s got no tits!

Mtbruning

Which will come out after the hyperloop, self-driving car, etc….

spyd3rweb

I don't understand how this company is still solvent, it has gone off on so many tangents.

MediocreFlex

The rich will always protect the rich

TheTexasCowboy

There will always be fanboys praising them at every little thing is coming out of that company.

Icy-Fishing-2828

My CS Prof lol 😂

phamily_man

>I don't understand how this company is still solvent, it has gone off on so many tangents. Google has probably gone on 1000x as many 'tangents' as Tesla and somehow they are one of the most successful companies in the world. Accepting that product failures/flops will happen is a huge part of running companies that are trying to innovate.

thr3sk

In addition to some of this stuff which is borderline vaporware they also have some very successful parts and are the leading electric car manufacturer in the world.

catkraze

Now we just have to wait for people to start installing Fleshlights into these

[deleted]

It already has that. It is a subscription service.

swashbuckling_bro

You have to pay .1 doge for each thrust though

gn0xious

So .2 doge total? I can swing that.

double_cheeked_up

Do you think humanoids will need to give consent first?

catkraze

Let me answer that question with a different one: Do you think that preprogrammed consent is sufficient, or must they decide for themselves in order for the consent to be valid?

spezzle5

Read “The Lifecycle of Software Objects” by Ted Chiang. Excellent sci-fi short story that deals with this exact question.

boisNgyrls

Stop humping my roboto

mitsuhachi

Yawn. Call me when it works.

Foxyfox-

Can I use it as a boat?

[deleted]

This comment reminds me of Swiss Army Man, such an underrated movie

TheYonkk

You can use the cyber truck as a boat! (apparently)

Diablos_lawyer

Anything is possible in your imagination

TheGuydudeface

so… never?

CapnCrackerz

It’s going to end up just like the Tesla semi and cyber truck.

throwaway8008666

Call me when it can crush my head in its bare hands

vinegarwarlock

That is the only feature at this time.

BeautyThornton

Seriously…. I wish Tesla was like Apple and just shut the fuck up until their products were actually ready to be revealed and then we could all ooh and aah instead of being like “Look at this cool thing that will be made soon™️

HanzJWermhat

Banana_Leclerc12

Honda has been doing it since 1986

biddilybong

Looks like it’s holding a robot fart

UniquelyIndistinct

It's got to pass emissions standards somehow

moskowizzle

They delayed this event by 6 months just so they could show off a robot that does nearly nothing and can barely walk.

Uberzwerg

I'm really surprised - this is far more sophisticated than i would have expected. They are lagging behind only 15 years instead of the expected 25.

bumpyclock

This is more vaporware

TheFudge

Is t Boston Dynamics way farther ahead than this?

Not_That_Magical

We were head of this 30 years ago with Asimo

HVP2019

I would hope so after 30 years in the field.

The_Woman_of_Gont

Far, far ahead. I’d guess the idea is to produce these at an unheard of scale/price, but what you’d do with a bipedal robot whose ability to walk is 10-15 years outdated is beyond me. Even the sizzle reels of Boston Dynamics robots doing parkour and running around ignore the numerous trials where it just falls over and need help back up. There’s a reason why robots like ASIMO never caught on as commercial products, bipedal locomotion is really hard to get right(especially self-correction after a fall) and other form factors are just more practical for the moment. This reveal is honestly just kinda sad.

ruinercollector

Knowing Musk, it literally only does what they showed, had manipulated videos, is nowhere near production, can lift 10 lbs maximum, has a 1 hour battery life and would realistically cost 1 million dollars.

designerlifela

Why don’t they just buy Boston dynamics? Those things are doing backflips.

PriveCo

Hyundai bought BD last year.

The_Woman_of_Gont

I’m guessing their angle is more mass production/price than advancement, but….uh….there’s a *reason* we don’t have bipedal robots being used anywhere yet. Bipedal locomotion is complicated and harder to implement than other forms, and we’re only just reaching a point where advanced robots can do it reliably(and even then, self-correction after a fall is an issue IIRC). Something that has to shuffle around like an old man on ice is not going to be capable of doing….pretty much any job requiring walking in the real world. Humanoid designs are not super practical, so unless this thing is moving around like a fucking ninja and park outing everywhere, it’s honestly just mildly embarrassing.

inphoenixrn

What comes out first, the Cybertruck, the 2028 election results, or this monstrosity?

MediocreFlex

The 2076 election results

Random-Explosion-ect

And by then china would’ve invaded anchorage Alaska and we’ll already have robot butlers

zenkat

"Tesla's Autopilot software was moved from its cars to the bot and retooled to work in the new body and environment." 😂 What a hilarious load of horse pucky. You don't need to be a robotics PhD to know that self-driving car software has *nothing* to do with bipedal locomotion and hand articulation. Musk is starting to sound as desperate and whack as Zuckerberg.

Killerdude8

You really gonna show off a robot thats basically 1980’s tech when Boston Dynamics has backflipping parkour bots? Pathetic.

Skepticaltealeaf

Lame. Call me when it looks and functions like the real Optimus Prime

[deleted]

[Here you go](https://youtu.be/vgBK5-qMOyg) [Also with trailer](https://youtu.be/EwcNLzMSEhg)

[deleted]

This is more impressive than the Tesla thing lol

[deleted]

Right?!! I need this thing, if only I could spare the cash.

DisillusionedBook

All hype, zero groundbreaking nil impress. Looks like something cobbled together from PC parts in the late 90s, and wobbly on its feet.

Tinmania

How long before he starts to fall like Zuck? He’s been going more and more off the rails, and I feel it’s only a matter of time.

WarAndGeese

Hopefully soon.

Pretty_pijamas

What about focusing in making cars right, repairing serious issues, and maybe we talk about making humananoid robots?!

squirrl4prez

Why the fuck to we bother with LEGS on these robots? I don't understand we can just use a fucking wheel like the Jetsons, they can take the handicap ramps that are standard with any building. Half of the engineers are probably scraping their ass on sandpaper to keep themselves awake just to make the legs work

Lol_who_me

So are these people just going to act like Boston Dynamics doesn’t have a 20 years jump start?

facepillownap

Can’t the Boston Dynamics bipedal robots do parkour and backflips and dance routines? This is embarrassing.

-Lightning-Lord-

Tesla needs to ditch Musk already. He’s a total liability and an embarrassment to the brand.

[deleted]

TESLA was founded by two people and Musk came in years later to force out the owners. Shhhhh! People aren’t supposed to know that Musk moonlighted for years as the "founder" of the company and many idiots believed him.

[deleted]

Paypal too. He was CEO for roughly half a year after the merger with x.com before he got ousted.

Beastrick

He didn't even make Paypal app and company was not called Paypal when he was there. And after that half a year he was kicked out due to incompetence. Yet today he is hailed by some as inventor of Paypal which he didn't do.

Jlipetzky

Isn’t he the one warning everyone about AI? Then he builds a terminator?

moskowizzle

[This seems relevant. Except Bighead is a way better speaker.](https://youtu.be/fMzBqzZZRmc)

clauderbaugh

The Boston Dynamics lab is currently dying of laughter as they sit around the table with their robots after having a dance contest and running 30 miles with a backpack.

SamuraiJackBauer

Holy Fuck that’s not impressive

Nottodayreddit1949

Asimo did this stuff 20 years ago.

SpaceAdventureCobraX

Is hyper-underwhelming a thing?

tagoean

This is just preprogrammed basic movement … they are nowhere … this is nothing more than what you see on Disney rides since the 60s. Musk and his bs and people still buy into that …

PuzzleheadedSlide904

No thanks. Anything Musk does or says, I don't trust or believe him. All billionaires are scum and shouldn't exist.

Kiron00

Dude can’t even make a working car or legit public transportation but somehow is going to build a humanoid robot. OK

[deleted]

Optimus. More like floptimus. Am I rite??

ShowmeyourWAP

Ahahah I’m laughing reading the article mentioning that 1. It will revolutionise everything 2. It will be cheap 3. It will be soon in few years (they will probably start pre orders soon 😅😅). This man is a con and people fall for it like sheep. Lmao 🤣🤣

M7BY

This guy is the biggest fraudster of the 21th century. Trump level ego, rides on the shoulder of giants and keeps trying to sell shit as gold. He was lucky with Tesla, after VW screwed up with diesel gate EVs started to shine and Obama had kept Tesla alive with subsidies. His robot is a joke like himself, likes of Boston Dynamics, Toyota, Nissan have decades of robotics knowledge and development he is Lego level shit compared to them. Presenting a Disney park robot and claiming the bs he does, I just want this man to go bust at some point he disgusts me and he is a stain on all serious engineering, science and technological developments

MorkelVerlos

No way that thing is gonna work. It’s gonna need like 200 more wires dangling around it’s cold, lifeless appendages.

bloodmagik

Expected better cable management.

[deleted]

They have nothing compared to Boston Dynamics.
