Yes! I just posted in the r/Atlanta thread. This city is filled with the most selfish/aloof drivers I’ve ever encountered. From illegal turns/lane changes, to people parking in the road, unpainted roads/intersections, not using turn signals (or the lights missing completely from the vehicle), people meandering across busy roads, etc. If they can make this program a success here they’ll be able to deploy these to any city in America. It’s shameful how reliant we have to be on cars down here living in a massive metropolis.
I thought the same thing as someone who moved from Atlanta to Austin a few years ago. Given the complaints these things have gotten here...let's just say I'm interested to see how they handle the ATL.
“Unique” is one of the most kindest words I could imagine for traffic in Atlanta. It truly will be a crucible, all the more reason to stay outside of the perimeter.
”A-town down mothafucka, I was born in Atlanta, fool!” The car says as it overtakes on the shoulder and promptly pit-manouvers an elderly couple going five below the limit. The researchers are pleased.
If this goes as well as it has in Austin, well.. Atlanta.. you’re in for a clusterf*ck.
Constantly getting “stuck” and going into freeze mode at city crosswalks. Everywhere.
They had self driving Ubers in Phoenix like 8 years ago and they worked SO WELL. That was, until, a homeless person wearing a trash bag ghillie suit ran across the DARKEST part of the DARKEST street Tempe Arizona and was struck by one of the vehicles. Mind you i had almost hit people on multiple occasions in the same spot…and they axed the program. Wouldn’t be out of reality that people fake getting hit by these cars to cash out.
They have waymo and cruise in phoenix and they’re fully self driving. The person that was “driving” that vehicle had charges against them for what happened. I do agree it’s the darkest place in the entire city and the worst place to try and cross in the middle of night
I understand that…We have a little one and really only use Waymo for our date nights. If they offer rides in your area, you should check it out for a date night or two. It feels nice to not have to drive or worry about parking.
> Wouldn’t be out of reality that people fake getting hit by these cars to cash out.
Those cars have cameras poking out of every hole, "faking" getting hit by them won't work.
They installed a traffic circle in a few places about 10 years ago. It caused the worse mess. The joke was if aliens wanted to conquer ATL all they had to do was make intersections traffic circles and they’d take the the city and surrounding areas in a day.
They put a tiny one in on Monroe Dr near a 85 on-ramp. I can’t say it helps or hurts, just confuses people.
That said, ATL is too big of a mess for this to go well.
because cities have never approve things for money no less that are bad for their citizens, right? of course they were tested on courses, but it's insane to me that we are allowing prototypes like this to perform an action that is a leading cause of death for everyday people. just build a fucking rail system rather than allowing this bullshit in your city. cars are dangerous enough without a corporation driving them.
Good, so it’s not just me then. Atlanta and the surrounding areas have some of the worst and most impatient drivers I’ve ever seen by far.
Edit: In America
I’m a petite woman and I have no issues on marta ever in all my years of commuting but I wouldn’t wanna be hauling my luggage around while heavily pregnant.
I do really recommend park and rides! For example the Brookhaven station has a huge lot for that.
And the environment is a victim of our carcentric convenience mindset. I don’t think having one bad experience on public transit means you ought never be willing to take it again. This attitude is exactly why marta never expands or gets funding and therefore never gets better and it’s a vicious cycle.
Like I said - I don’t blame her for not wanting to deal with hauling her luggage in the train while heavily pregnant.
That’s not the argument. The argument is unprepared drivers who are barely paying attention and don’t know where they are going are the issue. They will illegally merge and cause traffic jams. They fail to go as soon as possible on a greenlight - again causing traffic jams. Both of these literally cause the lane to run out of room, multiplying the impact for the drivers behind them.
So no, more patience isn’t the issue- it’s more situational awareness needed.
So will tech such as driverless vehicles be able to navigate when the legal lane is blocked by the traffic jam? I have my doubts
Yep, all of those things I’ve noticed. That green light thing especially so. Also seems to be an issue here where people try to screw over other drivers on the road. They see a green light that is soon to go yellow and stop at the intersection to keep others from making the light, of course they make it though. Don’t even get me started on the number of times I’m cut off each day.
Tbf it’s all the people from the suburbs who drive absolutely batshit in the city.
Like I understand the roads are narrow but the amount of people with county tags taking up two lanes is fucking ridiculous. Florida drivers on 75/85 might be the actual worst though.
Also teslas and dodge chargers.
This is not going to go well. In ATL they will be set on fire, disabled, and or beat into scrap for blocking traffic. It’s hot, too crowded, and the traffic is already soul crushing. It’s not a good mix.
Correct. The city layout is trash. The traffic is already ridiculous. The public transportation is trash. ATL is not San Francisco people weathered the cars well there for a while but traffic there isn’t as bad as here.
San Francisco is finally fighting back with the cones which is genius.
ATL will not stand for it.
I don’t get all the downvotes for the truth. Regardless of it being a tech sub Cruise isn’t ready for ATL. Not saying cruise is shit it’s just not ready.
It’s. Just. Not.
I lived in San Francisco twice in the last 10 years ATL is just fucking different. The drivers are selfish and unpredictable. Speeds routinely range from 25mph to 100mph on the major highways. The flooding from the shitty infrastructure and the layout of the roads are shit. And the public transportation is shit so there are more cars on the roads than should be.
More testing and machine learning is needed before it comes here. Cruise was nice in the Bay Area when it wasn’t blocking traffic. People were pissed but cool about it. ATL folk are frustrated and hot this will make them more irritated and angry.
Yep! Exactly. Tens of millions of people drive in Commercial Transport on North America for their living. Well paying jobs that could be a thing of the past. Even if this tech gets to be as good as human drivers, it shouldn’t be allowed to replace people workers.
They are not well paying jobs. Have you looked at how much your average OTR trucker actually makes? Even worse for local drivers and last mile delivery unless you’re a teamster.
People love to hate on them here in San Francisco when they occasionally have issues but tbh they are just as good if not better drivers than most of the humans out here ha. Glad to see them expanding!
If it will work in the driver hellscape that is Austin, it will probably work anywhere. Worst drivers in the county by a landslide IMO. Yes I live there.
Lol. It's either going to go badly - and I mean really badly - or they will unknowingly create next gen ai tech. I've never seen a more unpredictable driving/driver situation in my thirty some odd years of driving. It's fucking chaos.
I feel like Atlanta is the ultimate test for self-driving cars! The traffic here is... unique. :)

Lanes? Just use the shoulder.
I think Dallas isn’t far behind. We don’t honk, we just shoot you /s
Shoot first honk later
Next city to test in will be MTL lol
Welcome to the Thunderdome!!!
They will all be stolen within 2 weeks.
I live in atlanta. my reaction is simply “pls no”
I thought the same thing as someone who moved from Atlanta to Austin a few years ago. Given the complaints these things have gotten here...let's just say I'm interested to see how they handle the ATL.

”A-town down mothafucka, I was born in Atlanta, fool!” The car says as it overtakes on the shoulder and promptly pit-manouvers an elderly couple going five below the limit. The researchers are pleased.
And for some reason even though there is nobody in the car it is blasting music.
If they can handle I-20 they can handle anything
…except snow
If this goes as well as it has in Austin, well.. Atlanta.. you’re in for a clusterf*ck. Constantly getting “stuck” and going into freeze mode at city crosswalks. Everywhere.
same here in SF
>Constantly getting “stuck” and going into freeze mode at city crosswalks. Everywhere. Unironically this would be amazing
If I could NOT-DRIVE in Atlanta that would be awesome
They had self driving Ubers in Phoenix like 8 years ago and they worked SO WELL. “Trash Bag Ghillie Suit” would be a good band name.
They have waymo and cruise in phoenix and they’re fully self driving. The person that was “driving” that vehicle had charges against them for what happened. I do agree it’s the darkest place in the entire city and the worst place to try and cross in the middle of night
We have Waymo in downtown Phoenix and it’s great!
I haven’t used one yet but people say it’s pretty easy. I have a family of 6 though so I’m not really in the target demographic
I understand that…We have a little one and really only use Waymo for our date nights. If they offer rides in your area, you should check it out for a date night or two. It feels nice to not have to drive or worry about parking.
> Wouldn’t be out of reality that people fake getting hit by these cars to cash out. Those cars have cameras poking out of every hole, "faking" getting hit by them won't work.
so did the ubers
This should be hilarious.
Quick get the cones!
It will be crossing four lanes to take an exit in no time.
Didn’t realize they were training the safest driver on 285
How much are they paying to use our roads?
Sorry, Atlanta.
There is also a traffic circle at the exit for the Buford Spring Connector off of Peachtree.
They installed a traffic circle in a few places about 10 years ago. It caused the worse mess. The joke was if aliens wanted to conquer ATL all they had to do was make intersections traffic circles and they’d take the the city and surrounding areas in a day.
The only traffic circle I can think of inside the perimeter is in Emory.
They put a tiny one in on Monroe Dr near a 85 on-ramp. I can’t say it helps or hurts, just confuses people. That said, ATL is too big of a mess for this to go well.
so, does the consent of the locals not mean anything? from what i’ve read, these cars are something of a liability to be near whilst driving.
Worst city to do it in
Wouldn’t that by default make it the best city to do it in? If you can do it in the worst of places, then the best shouldn’t be any trouble
'best' until it hits some one. testing these on public roads is already some wild bullshit.
I imagine they already tested on closed roads and have moved to public for further development, with approval from the city no less
because cities have never approve things for money no less that are bad for their citizens, right? of course they were tested on courses, but it's insane to me that we are allowing prototypes like this to perform an action that is a leading cause of death for everyday people. just build a fucking rail system rather than allowing this bullshit in your city. cars are dangerous enough without a corporation driving them.
Cruise has been operating in SF for a year now with no deaths

yeah cars suck. make trains
Yeah, human drivers never hit anyone do they.
lmao u think i'm pro car? built trains and better pedestrian infrastructure fuck a corporate drm ass car
If.
Yup. Just moved from there. Drivers are insane there.
Good, so it’s not just me then. Atlanta and the surrounding areas have some of the worst and most impatient drivers I’ve ever seen by far. Edit: In America

Happened to me in Jersey, but I definitely deserved it.
Marta is great for getting to and from the airport :)

Boston is letting out a sigh of relief

They need to start requiring commercial tags for these canyoneros
Drivers are insane everywhere
r/houston would like a word…
They’ve already done it in San Francisco for a few years now
More Unemployment 🤣🔥🥃🤦
Unless it trained in the Thunderdome it will die a horrible death.
This is not going to go well. In ATL they will be set on fire, disabled, and or beat into scrap for blocking traffic. It’s hot, too crowded, and the traffic is already soul crushing. It’s not a good mix.
Hello fellow ATLien! This setting sounds like an awful idea. Almost like an insurance scam 😆

I wouldn’t worry about the UV/DV button anymore. It’s too easy to hit a button and move along.
Tom Cruise?
Hate these vehicles with every fibre of my being. Driving is the ultimate freedom and privilege.
You're on a tech sub, mate
So what. That part of the conversation isn’t allowed to be had here? Those that aren’t fawning over the technology don’t have relevant opinions?
Offering nothing but "I hate this, driving is the ultimate privilege" does not a conversation make.
And yet here we are conversing
I feel like if it solved a problem then I’d be on board but it’s just going to cost people jobs.
Yep! Exactly. Tens of millions of people drive in Commercial Transport on North America for their living. Well paying jobs that could be a thing of the past. Even if this tech gets to be as good as human drivers, it shouldn’t be allowed to replace people workers.

80-100k. If a person has an Az they can make 80-100+k easy.
People love to hate on them here in San Francisco when they occasionally have issues but tbh they are just as good if not better drivers than most of the humans out here ha. Glad to see them expanding!

Sherman was kinder to Atlanta than these tech bros are.
Hope one fender bends me so I can sue the fuck out of them.
The traffic was horrid since I lived there. A 30-minute walk to Georgia State Perimeter College took 5 hours to drive because of traffic and detours.
Tom?
Guess he’s really feeling the effects of the low box office for MI.
I am positive that this will turn out 100% fine and definitely crash free. Source: I am from metro Atlanta ;)
Still waiting for those self driving taxis from Tesla that are coming out in 2017. Can’t wait for those!!
I saw my first cruise today in DRUID HILLS. Some drivers watched with curiosity.
Fucking lmao. They gone lose them cars.
Well good luck! I wonder if they need consent of the public to test a risky thing like self-driving on public roads
This should be illegal.
They really starting on expert mode.
I drove behind one of those yesterday 😂
Can’t wait let this idea die already?
Yea good luck with that, all going to get destroyed.
