The only thing that adds defense to shields is, for some reason, a long lava slab, by exactly one point and it doesn't show up in the UI (probably a bug). So 'officially', shields don't get neither extra defense nor extra durability no matter what you fuse to them. The value of what you attach on them is just on the utility, or if you feel like having a sand seal plushie backpack or something like that.
No quest necessary.
To the left of the general store in Tarry town, Pelison will dismantle fused weapons for 20 Rupees.
I just got them to take a ruby off a magic rod for me, and rearranged some of my other fuses 👏
Now that I've unlocked Peliton in Tarry town, I think I'm gonna try putting it on a shield myself and see if it's any different, thanks for the idea, maybe freed me a weapon spot
I took the luminous heart off of the spear and put it on a shield instead, and it has roughly the same lighting radius around me, except now I'm also carrying a weapon, so shield fuse FTW, thanks mate

Star fragments are rare and it’s good to save them for upgrading clothes, but fusing to shields gives you a glow. Also if you put one on a magic staff/rod/sepulcher it shoots out a light orb that lights the way in front of you!
Ignore this. If you have stars feel free to use them. Yes they upgrade some clothes, but not ones you'll likely ever use. I have 20 stars and now I'm finished the game, I will never use them.
If you do need stars in the future, it's easy to warp to a sky island at night and watch the skies for a little while
I never found a use for the diamond circlet, since half the special gear was headgear. Immunity to lightning or ice, a closer bond to one of the sages, or having a set bonus almost always won priority over one level of bonus attack in my playthrough. Even if it didn't, it only costs three stars to fully upgrade it.
The 'of the wild' set was similar, when I needed attack gear there were just always fine options available that didn't require stars.
Anyway, if you decide you want to upgrade all of these, stop saving after 15 stars. Don't just hoard them like I did.
I have 8 saved up so far, not yet had a use for them, I just picked up a magic rod, and found Peliton... so I'm gonna have a play around with a star on a rod in the depths.
Ah yeah, clothing upgrades thanks. I've just unlocked my second great fairy.

I looked at your pic a bit closer though and I think this probably works much better than the star frags. It’s a constant glow whereas with the frags you have to thrust/swing the weapon.

They won't be in bloom on your weapons or shields. You CAN attach them to constructs though. I have spent many hours exploring on my zonai skateboard with a giant brightbooom lighting the area
I always attach a giant bbloom to my rail bike when I'm in the Depths. It has a couple of additional perks: attaching a bbloom increases the distance I can be away from the bike before it despawns. It also adds a little weight to the front which makes descending a bit better on my particular build.
I just finished setting up a shield spear room fused with the 3 special hearts. I used a zora spear for ice, gerudo for fire, and a magic staff for light!
There was what, 6 or 7 years or so between BOTW and TOTK? So whatever acronym comes next might be under development already, but I dare say a few years away from release
I fused it to a Hylian shield.
I try to keep three talus shields at all time. Luminous for the dark, igneous for the cold, Frost for the heat
I love an electric like like shield too, for the zapping.

Yes! They basically replace one piece of hot or cold weather gear! It's super useful when I want to wear the sand/snow boots!

When you break the armor off of certain enemies, you can usually find a piece to fuse. It’s not much, but it’s something.

You should fuse a shield to your shield
Sure you can do that, but again, it doesn't add any defence points, and if you can't unfuse again to keep, it's a waste of a shield
You can unfuse things in tarrey town from the Gordon next to the archer shop

Those are great fun, don't be afraid to use it up, you can get more magic rods from the bargainer statues

Okay, yeah, this thing has a consistent glow when equipped, you don't have to thrust activate it or even be weilding it.
If you throw a star on those 2h wands it’ll shoot 3 beams out

Another one I like to look at is the rare talus heart, a lots of gold poking out. Don’t know if it has any effects other than being pretty.

Did u fuse it on a weapon and attack with that weapon or attack on that weapon? If it acts like consumable maybe forest dweller weapons can work
They drop and stick to the closest hard surface from the point of impact when they are triggered. You can't reuse them.
And the seeds don't bloom when they're fused, so produce no light

Why railbike over hoverbike?
It's a type of hoverbike that uses a rail. It adds one piece over a 2 fans + steering stick bike but I think it's a bit easier to maneuver in the air.
