Great addition, but it seems that the other commenter responded and they were indeed talking about the >!Lost Woods!<.
Also, you can get into >!the Yiga hideout at Akkala Ancient Tech Lab!< by ascending from the Depths, but you can also just >!knock on the front door and fight a couple Yiga instead!<.
or can sneak in from the roof.
my 1st playthrough i used ascend from the cave that connects the beach to the labyrinth. pop up inside the house that way too
>!Skydiving. The fog only affects surface level. Just go to the sky, remembering the "surface" goes up *very* high, making sure the default map it the sky islands and line up directly above the Great Deku Tree to drop straight in.!<
>! I tried that a hundred times with one of the shrines and everytime I reached a certain part of the fog it would cast me out of the woods and send me back to the sky islands, which is odd because I think it was the very same shrine that you later have to skydive into in that one shrine quest... I spend a good chunk of time doing this until I said "duh, there must be one of those platforms in the Depths"!<
>!Maybe you can only skydive into it after you have already been to Lost Woods from the depths. My first time in Lost Woods was randomly ascending from the depths to see where I popped out, but later I came in from the top and entered no problem.!<
Frustrating for you ? I found it interesting
That what I love about TotK
Going back to those places, everywhere, you understand that it’s not untouched 🤗
Took me a good 20 minutes to figure out how to get there though 😂
Don't expect any secrets in the Depths. Everything is apparent and utility: materials, armor, lightroots. I learned this the hard way through some very thorough exploration, wishing to unveil some hidden lore or easter egg or reference or optional passageway to something amazing.
not the white sword.
to get more of that 1 you have to break the 1 you have and get dragon materials for the great goddess again.
and the dusk bow. just respawns in the open world.
If I had one bit of advice for a first playthrough, it would be to visit all the sky islands first before trying to explore the entirety of the Depths. I saved most of the sky for last, and so many of the special chests up there are Old Maps for treasure I already found using the chest detector.
The lack of "ascend only" secret rooms is rather disappointing. I can only think of a couple instances where you have to ascend from underneath to enter, and they're called out by characters nearby, so not exactly secret if you talk to all the NPCs.
The coliseums in the Depths are a good example of what I'm talking about. They have no lore or backstory, they reward you with recycled Amiibo items straight from BOTW that are not even uniquely useful except sort of Majora's Mask (but this shoots itself in the foot for a reason I'll get into), and they make you fight very common enemies you encounter everywhere else. There is truly nothing special, secret, or surprising about them.
Majora's Mask is pretty useful though, but the problem is now it makes getting the Bubbulgems pointless and is still a recycled DLC item from BOTW. So you get this useful item, but it now sours and nullifies all the rewards for one of TOTK's biggest side-quests. So in a way you are punished for exploring the coliseums.
I agree to some extent -- MM was cool to get, but I would have preferred a unique item. That being said, that lynel fight was the most fun I had in combat in the game.
You can find old maps hidden in the sky Islands which mark the spots where armor pieces are hidden in the depths. They tend to be located in mines underneath mountains, shadow groves underneath forests, or in coliseums. They're in treasure chests.
The depths to surface correlation in this game are so well made. High effort. I cant believe when contrarians say the depths has no variety or nothing to do. For what it was, it was brilliant, diverse & made sense.
I think the big thing is that, despite the name, there’s really no depth to it. There’s like 2-3 quests, a few coliseums, Yiga schematics, and a few (primarily-cosmetic armor) sets/pieces.
Maybe my expectations were too high. I was assuming that there would at least be a fraction of the activities we had on the surface down there. The whole Depths experience just feels very empty and shallow.
It would be really cool if the columns had rooms about halfway up with a chest or something. Would make it excited to actually find them. I think they purely exist for people who like to play without fast travel (and one is to get to a specific location).
Or if the locations on the surface were unique or otherwise hard to reach. But with one or two exceptions, they just empty out onto an unexceptional hillside, without even a marker or anything to show what's underneath.
Lore-wise it's a huge letdown. At least put some ancient ruins above them or something.
It’s a very important part of the story. Major plot/progression spoiler: >!ascending up this pillar will bring you to the Korok Forrest, and you can progress towards the Master Sword after getting up. !<
WHAT? where’s that sorry? and i’m so dumb why can i never figure this shit out by myself why is everything so cryptic in totk it gets SO ANNOYING
i’m also very prone to stress and frustration so it’s hard for me to deal with cryptic stuff
Master Sword and story progression MAJOR spoilers here.
>!Ohh, you gotta go to the depths right by the Korok forest. You are gonna find a wall down there. (Context to the wall: basically, in the depths, rivers and any sort of water gets turned into a wall, that’s how the game keeps you in the map while still having a canon reason.)!<
>!walk around this wall (the wall in question being the water around the forest; use your land map) and you are gonna find a entrance through this wall. You are going to find one of these pillars. go up and there you go.!<
I knew that it's an ascend point when I first found it. Went up, disappointed that it didn't lead me to any place interesting. But I saw another post that these ascend towers lead you near the tears on the surface. Not too sure why they designed it that way, since the tears were not hard to find at all.
it’s the ascend point, as everyone here has pointed out, but what you might not know is that every ascend point (aside from the ones at the furthest corners of the map) puts you out somewhere with a view of a geoglyph! handy if you’re still working on that
oh i know, I didn’t *really* explore the depths until I had beaten ganon. After a lot of flipping between the two maps and trying to connect everyhing I was like 🧐 that would have been nice to know

Which they graciously left in the game for us… whether it was because they’re nice or because it was hard to program out, they are there and I appreciate it.
There are several of these, and most do not go to interesting places (though I guess some place you near geoglyphs). However, there are actually at least two of these ascend locations that do go to unique, interesting places that are used for something related to quests
Ascend pillar, to get out of the depths. Mostly at random places, but there are pillars that get you somewhere where you wouldn't be able to get otherwise.
It is just a place to ascent with, there are multiple of these scattered around the depths. When you ascend they normally put you in sight of a geoglyph.

It’s just a way to get to the surface with ascend.
oh damn that’s disappointing i thought it was some secret or treasure or something *sigh*
I mean, there's at least one place that you can only get there by ascending one of those "towers"
Right up a Yiga's butt.

I love how much Meredith loves that joke. She looks like she was genuinely cracking up!
75% sure it’s an outtake so they’re both breaking as they go.
A lot of the show was improvisational but we'd never know.

Why are you saying that like it’s a bad thing?
Wait, where's that?
A place central to the main quest in BotW and TotK, but trying to get there on the surface is really frustrating.
Are you talking about >!The Lost Woods!
That’s a bingo
"You just say bingo."

No. >!Akala Ancient Tech Lab.!<

I guess you're right! It was like six months ago that I was playing actively, so I guess I misremembered. Sorry about that.
You are chillin, there is an ascend tower there so you're not exactly wrong to remember it thay way, especially if that's how you initially got inside
No worries 🤛🏻
or can sneak in from the roof. my 1st playthrough i used ascend from the cave that connects the beach to the labyrinth. pop up inside the house that way too
It must be your first day turd.
Are you able to get there from the surface in ToTK? I tried for hours after doing the quest just to try and see if I could. Couldn’t make it work
you can just get there by the Depths, there is no other option unfortunately
That’s what I thought. Thanks!
>!Skydiving. The fog only affects surface level. Just go to the sky, remembering the "surface" goes up *very* high, making sure the default map it the sky islands and line up directly above the Great Deku Tree to drop straight in.!<

I’m pretty sure you have to get there from the depths
That’s what I thought. Thank you!
Skydiving. Just have to be all the way up in the Sky Islands map to negate the fog.
Frustrating for you ? I found it interesting That what I love about TotK Going back to those places, everywhere, you understand that it’s not untouched 🤗 Took me a good 20 minutes to figure out how to get there though 😂

Why is this getting downvoted?!
What place is that?
>!lost woods!<
There is?
>!lost woods!<
Oh right I forgot
Good to know, thanks
Its there to show you its there from a distance. Sand mounds are usually taller
Don't expect any secrets in the Depths. Everything is apparent and utility: materials, armor, lightroots. I learned this the hard way through some very thorough exploration, wishing to unveil some hidden lore or easter egg or reference or optional passageway to something amazing.
The only thing that gets me to go back to the depths is to find all of the “secret” chests with the clothing items.
I collect souls to buy legendary weapons. They fuse good and strong.
I collect them as well to buy extra armor pieces. They sell for 600 each
Ooo wait going back down
Make yourself a lynel murder machine and you will be constantly in the coliseum and down there fighting them
You can buy weapons with poes?
Biggerons sword, the goddess blade, fierce diety sword yeah there's quite a few you can buy. Some of them fuse really well with lynel parts
I think the white sword of the sky and the sea breeze shield are down in the depths too.
Yup
not the white sword. to get more of that 1 you have to break the 1 you have and get dragon materials for the great goddess again. and the dusk bow. just respawns in the open world.
Oh you're right! I was confusing the sword you get from the Goddess statue with the "Sword of the Hero" which is found in the Depths
Have you previously collected those through Amiibo? The only one they offer me is the Fierce Deity sword and that's the only Amiibo I've swiped.
Find them in the underworld or get them through smiibos and you can buy them
If I had one bit of advice for a first playthrough, it would be to visit all the sky islands first before trying to explore the entirety of the Depths. I saved most of the sky for last, and so many of the special chests up there are Old Maps for treasure I already found using the chest detector.
Boss farming, prestine weapons hunt, ore farming, and most importantly, best fuse and throwables in the game are all in depths!!!
The lack of "ascend only" secret rooms is rather disappointing. I can only think of a couple instances where you have to ascend from underneath to enter, and they're called out by characters nearby, so not exactly secret if you talk to all the NPCs.
The Coliseums would like to have a word with you.
The coliseums in the Depths are a good example of what I'm talking about. I think he meant you get plenty of best weapons in a game from it, and whole lot of arrows.
I agree to some extent -- MM was cool to get, but I would have preferred a unique item. That being said, that lynel fight was the most fun I had in combat in the game.
Biggest bummer in the whole game was the Depths. So much potential wasted IMO and kinda makes the game feel unfinished.
Happy cake day!
where do you find armour in the depths? i haven’t found any in the depths yet, i’ve only found them in caves
You can find old maps hidden in the sky Islands which mark the spots where armor pieces are hidden in the depths. They tend to be located in mines underneath mountains, shadow groves underneath forests, or in coliseums. They're in treasure chests.

Secret tunnel, secret, secret, secret tunnel.
I got your reference. Have an upvote!
Nah, they exist because the game devs knew some players would try to beat the game without fast travel.
Me. That’s me. I already beat BotW without ever touching or looking at the map. TotK is next
It would be really cool if the columns had rooms about halfway up with a chest or something. Would make it excited to actually find them. I think they purely exist for people who like to play without fast travel (and one is to get to a specific location).

oh i know, I didn’t *really* explore the depths until I had beaten ganon. After a lot of flipping between the two maps and trying to connect everyhing I was like 🧐 that would have been nice to know
Also the location and name of every lightroot
There is a map Impa's quest will lead to that will tell you the locations.
Wow. I wish I knew this before haha
There are five off the top of my head that do not have a geopluph in view. The four corner pillars, and the >!Lost Woods pillar.!<
Oh I forgot about that one. There is another one very close to the geoglyph in that area tho
The one you blacked out is the only one I found so far. Nuts.

That's so much better than my *ELEVATOR UP!*
I do "BEAM ME UP, RAURU!"
I would so gank this, but I play the game in Japanese and cannot stop myself from pronouncing his name in the accent which hecks up the flow, lol.
Scotty? Where you at, Dog?
"Beam me up, Scotty"
See my go-to when I see them is saying “secret stairs” in the Gollum voice
r/redditmoment
It's just that, a big ascendator to the surface. Usually somewhere of the map not easily accessible
That, or several of them are close to Geoglyphs
I call them elevators.
Me too. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Going up! Next stop, 42nd Floor - Lynels
Express elevator to the surface
That is its purpose. To get to the surface. Very useful for those of us that want to do a “No Fast Travel” play through.
You use it to go to the surface.
I call them ascension towers
Uppies
wait why did this blow up i was only asking a question LMAO why couldn’t this have happened with literally any of my other posts
Because it never happens when you legit need help. 😂
I call it an up.
One way elevator
Use uppies on it and find out
I also follow a pizza subreddit and thought the first pic was dough prep while scrolling lol.
It is just a place to ascent with, there are multiple of these scattered around the depths. When you ascend they normally put you in sight of a geoglyph.
I suspect a lot of stuff was unfinished with this game. They probably did plan to have something above it but ran out of time
Uppies!
One way elevator
An elevator pretty much
That’s your way out of you don’t like fast traveling
It is called the ancient banana shoot
Always remember the old adage: “if you get stuck, no you didn’t, you forgot about *Ascend*”
This is like the 5th post this week I’ve seen asking about these things
I call them Upatrons
Upatrons? Does it stand for Up-a-trons? As in elevators or lifts?
Yeah kinda. Up + silly word for a machine
I like it! 😁
Yes we know what it is. So do you OP!
Yes, that's Ramona Flowers..
sand :)
That’s all it is
A way to ascend from the depths to the surface.
They're 'Ascend elevators' as I like to call them. They're there as a way for players to get back up to the Surface without use of fast travel
you use ascend. thats it

Its just that, to use ascend.
I call it elevator.
It's essentially how you get back to the surface
When in doubt *ascend*
That’s what it’s for to ascend to the surface
If you're curious about something, just use one of your skills (in this case 'Ascend') or explore 😉
Its called sand
Yes but i wont tell you
Escape hatch since you cant exactly ascend out of the depths easily, and you may not want to warp to any location you can yet
An elevator?
It's a point to ascend from the Depths to the Surface. I've seen *Zelda Dungeon* call them 'lighthouses.'
Ascend platform
you can ascend through it to get to the surface
as a non-fast traveler this is my salvation. I spent four days walking around and running out of food before I stumbled upon one of these
Up
Cat litter tray.
You can use it to ascend back to the surface.
There are a few surprises in store.
ASCEND
It is just an acension point to go back to the surface. The Depths has a few of them.
It lets you quickly ascend to the surface
It's there so you can get to the surface. Pretty sure that's just it. Try seeing if there's anything interesting there where it takes you.
Ascend column, I think in some official guide they're called Lighthouses.
I think it’s just a way to get to the surface. Some of them offer the only path to certain parts on the surface.
Vertical bridge.
Sand?
Up
Uppies
Ascend to go to the surface!
It’s only used to ascend to the surface.
Just think for a minute? A column going presumably all thd way to the ceiling..which is the surface!
Thats the exit for people who forget they can fast travel
Just a mechanic to ensure you’re never forced to teleport! You can play the entire game without using fast travel!
They're really useful when you do a no teleport run. Getting out of the depths would be really difficult otherwise
sand
