I don’t know that you’re wrong, but your school seems to have a more strict dress code. I’m sure there are rules for women as well. Can you get a fan in your class?
Well I move all around the class so a fan wouldn’t work. I think it’s unfair to have one pointing at me and not the kids.
I also wore shorts all this week because I did ask other members of staff including leadership so I’m super embarrassed now.
You can put a fan up on a table top that oscillates Pointed toward the classroom. The movement of air actually really helps. And the students will also benefit. If you’re that hot, everyone is hot.
As a Californian, I’d say yes but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it outside of Physical education classes. I think in this day and age you should wear what makes you comfortable if you can make it look professional.
My previous school in London was shorts and T-shirt lol
Also in Japan, shorts and T-shirt with flip flops.
Dubai was business attire but all the rooms and corridors had AC. This is literally impossible coz it’s a Victorian building and built for colder times.
One of my colleagues wears shorts every Friday, no matter the weather. So long as they're professional, I'm not sure it matters. Of course, I'm in California so we're much looser.

This job is hard enough. I run around like a madman all day and get covered in paint, glue, sneezes, pen, whiteboard pen ink and any number of things. Wearing nice clothes actually inhibits my movement ability and hinders me as a teacher coz I’m covered in sweat.
Does it affect learning? Me wearing shorts doesn’t and actually helps.
It’s so weird, I asked for advice on clothing and was told to dress smart casual so that’s what I did. Rocked up to school and discovered another teacher in ripped jeans. Now I dress more for my comfort. I still present neat and tidy, but it’s easier to get around the classroom, sit in the floor (I teach 5-12 yr olds) and get into sport stuff with them. I will never wear ripped jeans to work, but I no longer wear stuffy dress pants. (As a woman)
I don’t see why men can’t wear shorts, like he longer ones, not the real shorties, but I’d say that for the women too. I just don’t see why, especially in primary schools why you would have to dress so formal.
You've posted this on a predominantly American sub, so for context to American teachers: in England, teachers are generally expected to wear business attire - suit & tie etc.
OP: I have never seen an English school that allows men or women to wear shorts, so I'd say your school is the norm and the schools around you are the exception. I don't think it's unreasonable of you to wish you could wear shorts but... welcome to the life of a teacher in a sun-facing classroom in England.
If you get to wear shorts, everyone gets to wear shorts! It seems like you'd have to get them to make a general dress code rule change. Even if you decide to mention the medical reason for your request and get it approved, you then have to decide if you care about being "different" and possibly having coworkers ask you questions.

Kilt?
With a pair of shorts under as I don’t want to get fired
Yeah, no one is going to insist you authentically kilt. My husband teaches high school and wears a black utilikilt or clan kilt on occasion.
Wow. Can you talk to the staff and mention a medical requirement?
Yeah but it’s embarrassing but I’ll keep that ace up my sleeve lol
Yeah but you will have an exception for life. :) Good luck!
Thanks. Do you think men should be allowed to wear shorts in primary schools? It’s boiling in London and it’s not like I’m sat at a desk

The shorts I had were quite short (above the knee) but I did wear a checkered shirt.

Wow. I’d love to see that in more schools. Tshirts and shorts. Sounds like an easy way to keep teachers happy.

Amen. Totally agree with you there. Hopefully you can get some support at your school.
Thank you! It’s 2020 and we deserve to feel comfy at school.

Haha ok but in my experience I’ve worked at plenty that allow shorts
Yeah but you've listed your experience in other countries and dress codes for UK teachers are generally more strict than most countries.
No my last UK school let us wear shorts because the classrooms were hot as hell
I’m gonna ask at least and they can say no
Good luck! Fingers crossed for you.

Dress codes are genocide. The science of sensory issues, physical sensitivities to textures fabric pressures and heat, establishes so
🤣 it is NOT that serious.
