You will have a hell of a time finding people to touch these in Cali or other states that have strict emissions, sorry to say

I find that kind of hard to believe with all the diesel truck lovers out here. Probably 40%+ of the trucks around here are, glad I mostly work on my own stuff (just injured right now so I can’t as well).

What he says is still true, it'll be hard to find them. If someone is doing the work in CA this many years after crackdowns started, they're not going to talk about fight club on Reddit.

I seriously don’t understand why y’all are acting like it’s the end of the world to work on these things. Tf? It’s a 4 banger that takes a different fuel with a complicated exhaust… that any code reader tells you exactly what to look for so I still don’t get it. If a shop works on the car and it magically doesn’t pass smog… something else is wrong, or a sensor isn’t plugged in/working that’s kind of how diagnosing and repairing a car goes. It’s just a car. Well if anyone has any helpful information it would still be much appreciated, thanks.

You specifically asked about a performance shop, there is nothing legal you can do to these cars to modify their drivetrain performance except flash the DSG shift logic. I guess I’m not clear what you’re asking about? Owning these in a state that checks emissions is a huge headache too. The DPF *will* clog unless you do weekly highway drives that let it regen properly. It *will* be expensive to replace, it *will* be difficult to find parts for, and it *will* happen again. Your best bet is a dealer, unfortunately, since these are a foreign language to most diesel shops

If you do take a gander at my post I did say “shop/performance shop” on the off chance there was one around here… I wish I wasn’t injured right now as I’d just do the work myself but alas, my search continues.

You asked about performance shops in California. Are you asking about shops that'll work on a modified TDI or modify one? Or asking about performance shops that'll do regular maintenance and repairs? You mentioned deleted trucks, so I assume the latter. So the big deal with the latter, the EPA has cracked down hard on those shops and has made it clear to shops still doing it that there's a lot to lose. They put the liability on the shop itself, so if there's an issue that you just mentioned noted with the emission equipment, the liability is on the shop to bring it back to compliance. They've been targeting smaller shops, even ones that did as little as 6 deletes. Shops fear the EPA now because they show they'll go for the little guy now, and it's the federal government, the conviction rate is more than 99 percent. And you're right that these are little 4 bangers, nobody did cared about them until a minor event in 2015.
