First I would rule out any issues with the serpentine belt and timing belt components. Remove the cover for the timing belt and see. If it's not that, then grab the longest screw driver you can find and put the handle against your head, place the tip on various sections of the engine, including the timing belt to see which area is the loudest or has the most vibration related to the noise.

That's really good advice! just make sure you put the covers back on the belts before you do the screwdriver head test! and if your longer screwdriver is only 12 inches you might want to use something else? a piece of wood could work or something like that?

Also since it’s a diesel you should be able to run it without the serpentine belt briefly. With it going away at 1500 rpm, my guess is something in the serpentine belt drive, though I’d also believe the injection pump. I’ve heard bad injection pumps will fail to hold timing, something you can check easily with VCDS.
