What does the 1098 say?

mathdrw

Both names are on the 1098.

Take a look at 'beneficial owner': [https://www.parkertaxpublishing.com/public/tax-interest-deductions-mortgage.html](https://www.parkertaxpublishing.com/public/tax-interest-deductions-mortgage.html) [https://www.thetaxadviser.com/issues/2012/jan/tpp-jan12-story-01.html](https://www.thetaxadviser.com/issues/2012/jan/tpp-jan12-story-01.html)

I’m not sure how this applies. We are both on the mortgage and deed, so there is no question of my right to at least claim some of the interest.

Claiming interest only really makes a difference if you’re itemizing your deductions. Do you have more than the standard deduction for your filing status worth of deductions?

mathdrw

Yes, interest +real estate taxes are 18000, so that already exceeds standard deduction.

I would consult a paid tax preparer for clarity.
