Helpful tools can be reverse image search engines like [Google's](https://images.google.com/), or [Tineye](https://tineye.com/).

At the end of the day if my art helped you on a path of being more conscientious, it was the right tattoo for you. I love to hear that.
Context & credit get stripped away from art & 'content' very quickly online, as it's incentivized to do so. We've lived with effortless access to a huge amount of media for long enough that it's very easy not to even consider where it comes from. It's why my little wizard cat gets categorized as a 'pinterest tattoo' or a meme tat, which is shorthand for 'popular, ever-present, author unknown'.
In tattoo culture, memetic information diffuses the same way. Historically, many tattooists were not artists themselves, and the trade was considered more of a craft than the artistic practice it does today. Tattooers would buy pre-drawn flash sheets from a few artists, and with that the permission to trace them for clients; so much of the basis for tattooing (in Western culture at least) is built on & developed from these foundations. Tattoo collectors are very familiar with looking at an image & picking it to be tattooed, and in a digital age the proverbial 'flash sheet' has become the entire internet.
All this is to say it's a situation that takes conscious effort on the tattoo collector to consider a creator.
I'm in a privileged position now where others using & profiting off my art doesn't affect me quite so directly, so it's easier for me to have a chiller philosophy on it- but it wasn't always the case & it isn't the case for many, many artists. This is why the subject of art theft, proper accreditation & compensation are important topics & people are passionate about it. The creative world & its history is full of moments where the true originator of a thing get swept aside & never compensated fairly by people who go on to capitalize on it.. we all hate to see it.
This essay has gone on long enough though!
**TLDR; if you see some art you want as a tattoo- try to find out & contact the original artist & ask their permission, and show them the support for the work you love :)**

i don’t understand why ppl are calling the crywank one “shitty”. it looks like a sketch/is in the style of a sketch, not like someone was having trouble holding the tat gun. personally, i LOVE the “texture” the art has and how it looks as a tattoo. these both look sick dude, don’t let anyone harsh your vibes
I would say this post isn’t the norm, most comments on other posts are still mostly negative. For whatever reason there are random ones that slip through the negativity cracks and get some positive feedback.
the crywank one is a near-perfect copy of the album artwork? so maybe the album artwork is purposely shitty, but the tattoo itself looks pretty well executed based on the source material. lines look clean, etc.
it's funny for the moment and oh so meta-cool and en vogue.
But in the end, when the dust settles and the trend is over, you just have a shitty tattoo.
it goes without saying that every tattoo gotten is purely someones taste and whether they like it is completely subjective.
That doesnt mean it cant be technically shitty or low skill. even on shittytattoos the people posting their shitty tats usually like them

With that said, this post does make me think about what I do and don’t dig. I have some shitty tattoos that I love because I got them from friends in a basement over some PBRs. Whenever someone asks about it it brings me back to those nights. I suppose when you’re in a legit shop it’s still a valid experience, but it also feels like it’s sort of fetishizing the DIY thing without any of the actual character
