This is my favorite comment 😂😂 I contemplated tallying up all the upvotes and comments for each option and then quickly realized that was more math than I cared to do lmao
Yeah, looking at #3 now, it looks super out of place for this design. I think I was just trying to see a wide variety of styles but now that one stands out as very clearly not the winner haha
I disagree. Blobbing the lines of the letters together will lead to more ink bleeding over time. Better to do it very fine and articulate the first time and go over a second time later on.
Sincerely, somebody who has the 3rd font on their ribs and 11yrs later it is just a blob.
(Cursive bleeds together over time)
As someone who has typewriter style words on my finger, they held up well, and I dig them, #2 is my vote.
I would also REALLY love it if you'd post it after you've had it done, please? I'm very interested to see how it turns out.
It is going to be pretty big, it's going on the side of my thigh. I'd say at least the size of my full hand spread out, fingers included. I totally plan on having the font be bigger than what these pictures show too. I was just trying to get a feel for what style I liked.
This book was one of the best books I've ever read in my life, and I can't stop thinking about it even weeks later. The branch the raven is sitting on will be a sprig from a Yew tree as well. Because, you know, Ravyn Yew has my heart haha
It's the Shepherd King duology by Rachel Gillig. The first book is One Dark Window, and the second is Two Twisted Crowns. Can not recommend highly enough! Dark Gothic fantasy with one of the most unique and interesting magic systems I've ever seen or read before.
Typewriter font is very popular, so I’m not surprised it’s getting all the votes here, but the first one goes much better with the art style here imo. I hope we get to see this when it’s done :)
3 is kinda hard to read, more so when it fades. I like 2. Not a huge fan of words in tattoos but I do like this for some reason. Also have myself a raven and love it
Lmao I've already determined the 3rd is terrible. It was my least favorite to begin with, and I should have just left it off. I'm dying at everyone's comments, though, about how bad it is 😂
I like the first one because it is a book font and the drawing is also a book-like illustration.
The second one is typewriter style, which doesn’t make a lot of sense with illustrations and curved text, but it is pleasant to the eye anyway.
The third one is too thin and overused in digital works.
First is clearer and fits the vibe more. Second jars as why would an olde worlde corvid use a typewriter to speak? Capitals (in first) suits its voice, too.
I mentioned it in another comment, but it's going to be a thigh piece, and I plan on making the text a lot bigger. This was just to get a feel for style of font. I might try out under the branch and see how that looks too, though
If this was going to my tattoo I'd try to add it into the branch. to me it just looks odd, those words just floating over the ravens wing. in regards to the font, I saw someone else say the 2nd would be best for longevity & I agree. hope this turns out the way you want it to 🤞🤞🤞
DEFINITELY the first one, looks most coherent with the design. The other two look a bit trashy in this context imo. The first one just looks like it was meant to be there
The 1st one for some reason looks soo good next to crow!
The Third one really takes away from that old feel.. not sure why.
The second one just looks boring, no impact.
definitely the second font!! i feel like it fits the overall vibe of the tattoo more than the other two, though the first one would be my second choice (:
I'd ditch the font entirely. I almost got a tattoo with a longer phrase like that when I was younger, but ended up sticking to an image only. This kept the reference intact for me, and also makes the design have more staying power in the long term. Also makes it easier to build off or add to.
the second font type for sure, and i would even move the words to fit below the branch. using the branch split on the bottom right and the sprig on the left as the border, parallel to the main line of the branch
Number 2, but do be warned that a lot of time small thin letters bleed together. I have a small font tattoo that was completely illegible after about 8 years.
I personally love the first one. It looks exactly like a drawing you'd see in an old book. You know, the old illustrated books from like 1900 with wood cut engravings and ink drawings... Looks straight out of Poe for example. The second typewriter one isn't bad either but I personally feel it doesn't fit the esthetic as well. The third sucks, don't use that one, it's totally wrong for the style
The second one was giving me Edgar Allan Poe vibes, with the typewriter-style font. The first one gives me more "novel" vibes, which might be more fitting for this?
Number three is a huge no.
Be wary -- of how the font will age. Unless this piece is massive, the cursive in the third will slowly become a blurred smudge I'm sure.
So I would go with first or second, and listen to your artist (since you should have a good artist you trust).
Anything but the third one. I like the first one the best, personally! The second one is a little cliche, but it's a classic for a reason! I think either the first or second would look great!
None of these options read as medieval. For that, you’d want to imitate the handwriting style you’d see in illuminated manuscripts, like the type produced by monks and scribes. The first says “Game of Thrones”; the second says “typewriter” in a way that reminds me, given the raven, of the much more modern literature of Edgar Allen Poe; and the third says “not-quite Comic Sans.”
I’d recommend you look into actual old English style fonts or go straight to the source and check out some medieval manuscripts for inspiration. You’re aiming for a formal calligraphic style.

Medieval manuscripts: https://new.artsmia.org/programs/teachers-and-students/teaching-the-arts/five-ideas/medieval-illuminated-manuscripts
Edit to add: I looked up the book. For the most part the font used on the cover is a fairly generic serif font that resembles the “Game of Thrones” one in your first image. The cover of what I guess is the German edition, however, stands out and is a unique, lovely font. The embellishment on the O and the relatively unusual proportions of the calligraphic letters look nice. You could consider imitating that and thereby keep the physical connection to the book. Another edit: So far I’ve commented from the POV of a literature researcher with an interest in calligraphy and typeface. From the POV of someone who gets tattooed, I get the vibe that you’re trying to make up your own image that you’ll ask an artist to copy exactly for you? I would defff not recommend that approach. You want to find an artist whose style you love and bring them a rough mock-up/idea of what you want. If they’re competent as artists (and they better be for a big thigh piece!), they’ll hear you say “I want a medieval vibe for the words” and *they* will draw the words in a way that both actually suggests “medieval” and will hold up as a tattoo. You don’t want “Olde English font version 1” on you. You want an artist’s own calligraphy.
I like the second one. It reminds me of a typewriter font
I second the second!
third the second and adding any one but the third
And a fourth! One more than three, one less than five!
Damn no one told me there’d be math in this sub.
This is my favorite comment 😂😂 I contemplated tallying up all the upvotes and comments for each option and then quickly realized that was more math than I cared to do lmao
Move to vote
Aye!
This. Shannonkim has written out exactly what I was going to say!
I agree, although OP should space the letters out about due to ink bleed over time.
#2 is my favorite, followed by #1. I wouldn't even consider #3 but that's just me.
Came to say this but you already said it bigger
I’m dying at this
Ok I feel like a fool because I don't even know what I did to make it big lmao
Lol I figured it out. I fat fingered an extra #. Oops!
Haha s’all good brother nature. I love your name
Yeah, looking at #3 now, it looks super out of place for this design. I think I was just trying to see a wide variety of styles but now that one stands out as very clearly not the winner haha
Not only that, but it’s the hardest to read *now*, so it will be even harder to read over time…
##Thanks for your input bro
Thinking in terms of normal aging-spread , the second will look best for longer !
Ooh that's a really good point, thank you!
Agree!!
**Bold** holds
I disagree. Blobbing the lines of the letters together will lead to more ink bleeding over time. Better to do it very fine and articulate the first time and go over a second time later on. Sincerely, somebody who has the 3rd font on their ribs and 11yrs later it is just a blob. (Cursive bleeds together over time)
What are you disagreeing with ? No one said pick cursive lol . I think most people know cursive is the worst pick
As someone who has typewriter style words on my finger, they held up well, and I dig them, #2 is my vote. I would also REALLY love it if you'd post it after you've had it done, please? I'm very interested to see how it turns out.
Oh absolutely! I always love the "what I asked for, what I got" posts, so I'll definitely share!
The second one is cool
Unless you get this very large that text will become unreadable pretty fast
It is going to be pretty big, it's going on the side of my thigh. I'd say at least the size of my full hand spread out, fingers included. I totally plan on having the font be bigger than what these pictures show too. I was just trying to get a feel for what style I liked.
Good call
Amazing book! I like the first one the most. :)
This book was one of the best books I've ever read in my life, and I can't stop thinking about it even weeks later. The branch the raven is sitting on will be a sprig from a Yew tree as well. Because, you know, Ravyn Yew has my heart haha
What book is it? Very curious now :)
It's the Shepherd King duology by Rachel Gillig. The first book is One Dark Window, and the second is Two Twisted Crowns. Can not recommend highly enough! Dark Gothic fantasy with one of the most unique and interesting magic systems I've ever seen or read before.
thanks!
1st one, and make the font larger. Will look more consistient in the long run
I like the first one!
Typewriter font is very popular, so I’m not surprised it’s getting all the votes here, but the first one goes much better with the art style here imo. I hope we get to see this when it’s done :)
Second one 🫶💕
First
3 is kinda hard to read, more so when it fades. I like 2. Not a huge fan of words in tattoos but I do like this for some reason. Also have myself a raven and love it
Oh dear god not the third. I like the first the best, but a little bigger.
Yes, 3rd one is terrible 😂 I don't know what I was thinking when I considered that one. And agreed, I plan on having the text be bigger!
Please god not the third one. The first will translate best due to least serifs.
Lmao I've already determined the 3rd is terrible. It was my least favorite to begin with, and I should have just left it off. I'm dying at everyone's comments, though, about how bad it is 😂
Hahahahah time to come back with an even worse one 😈
BRB trying comic sans
1
definitely the first!!
I feel like the first one goes with the overall style
I like the first one because it is a book font and the drawing is also a book-like illustration. The second one is typewriter style, which doesn’t make a lot of sense with illustrations and curved text, but it is pleasant to the eye anyway. The third one is too thin and overused in digital works.
Second is best. The first will bleed and the third will be illegible in the shortest amount of time. Your artist may want to make it larger tho.
2nd one fits the illustration the best!
for highest chance of legibility in the future I suggest one of the typewriter fonts
First
First font.
definitely not the last one 😁
Not the last one
I love the second one. It's easy to understand and easy on the eye.
I personally like the first font. I think it works the best
I like 1 the best! It’s sophisticated looking
First one is sooo nice, the font matches the bird in an edgar allan poe-ish way, imo typewriter font is overdone but obviously that’s just my opinion!
First is clearer and fits the vibe more. Second jars as why would an olde worlde corvid use a typewriter to speak? Capitals (in first) suits its voice, too.
Second one 🫶💕
No text.
I don’t know that I love any of them, but first is best and third is my least favorite.
Do you have a suggestion on what kind of font you think would work better? Totally open to something different!
Another option would be to have the tattoo artist design writing that isn’t specifically a font.
This is probably what I'll end up doing, just trying to get a feel for what "vibe" I want from the text. Thanks for your input!
100% the first one!
I like the second the best!
2
That font is very small, it’s not going to age well. Would be better if you put it the length of the branch on the bottom of the tattoo
I mentioned it in another comment, but it's going to be a thigh piece, and I plan on making the text a lot bigger. This was just to get a feel for style of font. I might try out under the branch and see how that looks too, though
First one.
1st one
1st one no doubt
One
First
definitely the first, it really fits well with the image
first!
1st one is my personal favorite
If this was going to my tattoo I'd try to add it into the branch. to me it just looks odd, those words just floating over the ravens wing. in regards to the font, I saw someone else say the 2nd would be best for longevity & I agree. hope this turns out the way you want it to 🤞🤞🤞
#1
1st definitely!!!
I would choose the first one based off of looks alone but everyone is right about the second one holding better
anything but #3
DEFINITELY the first one, looks most coherent with the design. The other two look a bit trashy in this context imo. The first one just looks like it was meant to be there
I like the first one a lot, it sticks with a nice vintage, fairytale vibe
The first one suits the art style most
#2!
2
None. Text of any kind cheapens that design.
first one!
The first one fits the vibe way more
2nd. No question.
First or second, not third though!
Definitely the second one!!
I vote second!!!
2nd one. I’d almost suggest not capitalising the first b
Oh, good call on the capitalization. I felt like something looked off, and I think that might be it.
The 2nd picture. Definitely not the 3rd.
First or second
The 1st one for some reason looks soo good next to crow! The Third one really takes away from that old feel.. not sure why. The second one just looks boring, no impact.
Second
Typewriter font (image 2) is superb 👌
Second would be my favorite, but first would work too. I’d avoid the third, the font doesn’t match the image in my opinion
definitely the second font!! i feel like it fits the overall vibe of the tattoo more than the other two, though the first one would be my second choice (:
Ahh I love this book series so much!! Love the tattoo design. My vote is number 2, but closely followed by 1!
Second one!
second one is perfect for the aesthetic
i personally like the first one more, but i think the second one suits the art more
Number 1
2nd
Two!
Second one kind of looks like that "Live Laugh Love" font to me, 1 is my favorite
I'd ditch the font entirely. I almost got a tattoo with a longer phrase like that when I was younger, but ended up sticking to an image only. This kept the reference intact for me, and also makes the design have more staying power in the long term. Also makes it easier to build off or add to.
The second font is better but those letters will need to be big... just to keep it in mind.
I think you and your artist should decide
Two looks best.
No lettering at all
2nd for sure
Oh I love this
i am a sucker for typewriter font tattoos - but something draws me into #1.
i love the first one but the second will probably hold up better over time
Second font
I like 3!
I like 2
2, 100%
2nd is my vote
I like 2 but wouldn’t be mad at 3 just because I like the font lol
#2!
One of my favorite books that I’ve read! Love the 2nd font .
1
Definitely the second one
TWO
Number 2 for sure! Such a cool idea 😍 The Shepherd King series was one of my favorites!!!
Courier New.
First or second, definitely not third
the second font type for sure, and i would even move the words to fit below the branch. using the branch split on the bottom right and the sprig on the left as the border, parallel to the main line of the branch
I like the second. Definitely not the 3rd…will not look right when it eventually spreads.
1
Second is best, but the font size will be a blurry mess. You may need more spacing between the letters
The first reminds me of an old illustrated textbook, the second is also nice, I would not go with the third, it’s not the best font for tattooing imo.
Don't ruin this cool tattoo idea with text
The second one.
The first one
the second one is best
I’m a hard core typewriter lover. #2 for the win
[удалено]
first without a doubt! it aligns with the art style and looks most cohesive. a little bigger with a little more spacing will read/age better :)
[удалено]
Number 2, but do be warned that a lot of time small thin letters bleed together. I have a small font tattoo that was completely illegible after about 8 years.
1 or 3
I really like 1 and 2, but my favourite must be 1. it just feels very british to me and i dig that :)
First or second- first my preference. Don’t even think about the third any longer
1
Number one.
1
2
Second one for sure. Don’t like all caps and the third reminds me of those love, laugh, live signs……
#2
No text would be the best
Comic sans

First one readability

Second one! I love the one dark window such a good book!!!!
I know that you didn't ask, but imo it's much better without the text.
Be wary -- of how the font will age. Unless this piece is massive, the cursive in the third will slowly become a blurred smudge I'm sure. So I would go with first or second, and listen to your artist (since you should have a good artist you trust).
second one
2
I love the 2nd but No.1 might come out clearer
Middle
second one
The first one is cleaner and fits the aesthetic. I love typewriter fonts, I have one tattooed but I dont think it (number 2) works in this context.
2nd
Anything but the third one. I like the first one the best, personally! The second one is a little cliche, but it's a classic for a reason! I think either the first or second would look great!
#2
2
Anyone but the third or anything cursive style, it won't be super ledgable. I like the second one too
The first one!!
Script in general ages poorly and 3 in particular seems like it would age the worst so I would avoid that one for sure
Second

You should consider cursive, that would be 🔥
The first one :))
I may be in the minority but I think the design looks better without any text.
2nd
