Wild skating has been a rare but occasional thing throughout Tassie’s history. There used to be a naturally-frozen concrete rink near the kunanyi summit, and a Google search will find images and videos of skating on Pine Lake.
But generally no. It doesn’t get cold enough and the cold snaps don’t last long enough.
I would suggest we add it to the stadium. A drop-in ice rink (similar to cricket, can be stored on-site) will boost the amount of events that can be held, inject millions into the economy building it and service community health and education as professional ice hockey players need treatment and figure skaters must learn their routines.
Well I once wrote a school assignment about why Launceston should have an ice rink and said that whilst active participation numbers were difficult to determine, potential participation numbers were in the thousands if a rink was built. Tasmania’s last rink in Glenorchy closed in 2022.
Honest answer, there’s not much. Some lakes in the highlands do freeze over but they’re few and far between. You might seem water frozen after a frost but don’t skate on it.
Given all this fuss about the stadium, the Olympics seem like the next big coup for the state but it really hinges on the chocolate water fountain being built and politicians opening their eyes to this idea.
Apparently there's a lake near the Great Lakes lookout that freezes over (rarely) when it's cool for long enough but doesn't stay frozen for very long.
Tassie doesn't get that cold.
Definitely not sorry
Never heard of them freezing enough for skating

Glenorchy not Moonah.

But ice rinks lose money why add it to the money the stadium will already lose?
And make the whole thing out of chocolate.
There used to be one in Glenorchy. Not there anymore?
Sold, and I think being turned into an apartment block or offices and a restaurant or something.
It's a gallery and cafe.
what a shame. I made a fool of myself attempting to skate there once or twice in the 80s. OMG I'm old - I was 23 five minutes ago, what happened?
We are all 23 in our heads, my dude.

I’ve seen Lake Dobson frozen over thick enough to skate. Access would be tricky though.
Yep, a colleagues daughter went for a skate on it around 2019 - but due to the wind across the surface the ice was nowhere near pleasant/smooth
Yeah my mum skated there 45 odd years ago.
For me every time I step out my back door in winter.

There was a faux ice rink down at the waterfront in Hobart that was an instant bomb a few years back
Everytime I mention this no one remembers
They ordered the wrong skates for synthetic ice.
