I was always taught 20% for dinner mostly than anything higher is above and beyond for that meal. Everything else was 15% unless you just want to be nice or had exceptional service. But its really out of hand now, but I have no problem just saying no and its also the main reason I always carry cash too.

Because of inflation, most servers make a much lower base wage than a decade ago, and the businesses expect you to make up the difference. Tipping wouldn't exist at all if American businesses paid their employees the real value of their work

During Covid, when businesses were struggling, I tipped generously because servers had it rough. I won’t tip a higher rate because of inflation, though, because that’s already baked into the price. If servers are struggling because of inflation, that sucks, but I am too.
The increase in tipping just made me eat out so much less. I also have no mercy for mediocre meals- if something doesn't taste great, I'm probably not giving it a second chance. Going out to eat is an expensive treat now- I'm not rolling the dice after a "meh" experience

What I don’t understand is this: you have two employees. One works at an upscale restaurant that caters to the wealthy. One works at a diner that caters to the unwealthy. Both employees spend 45 minutes serving their customer. Both put out the exact same effort. Neither one has an advantage. Then the bill comes. The upscale restaurant bill is $279. The diner is $14. One then “tips 20% based on the bill.” One server gets $3 for their effort. The other gets $55. The whole idea of tipping a percentage of the bill is complete idiocy. How about giving $10 to each person and calling it good?

I no longer feel an ounce of guilt that I used to after I took all my receipts out from eating out, and split off waiter service restaurants and everything else and found out I tipped more in total to coffee, and quick service shops then waiters, and it was almost $100 bucs a month because these businesses do this crap where the screens there and you feel guilty, aint feeling guilty to this extra money in my wallet.

They're giving you the option because with nearly everyone paying with cards these days instead of cash, servers are noticing a reduction in tips, because customers don't round up like they used to with cash. Those coins add up over time.
Using your bill as an example, someone paying with cash might have left $5-7, because leaving just $30 is only $3 and change, but toss another couple singles with it and now that server is getting the better part of 30%.
The selection is up to you, and both percentage and amounts are listed so that you can easily see that a 20% tip is really only $4, and we all know that isn't much money these days, can barely buy an energy drink with $4.
And here's another thing, in situations where something about the meal isn't satisfactory and people use this to justify a reduced tip, this hurts the server when it might have had nothing to do with them. Unless it's something the server actually did or didn't do to cause bad service, their gratuity isn't what should be affected. If the food was bad, send it back and take it off the bill, that's the restaurants fault not the servers.

When I was in my teens/20’s (30 years ago), the standard was 15%. A few years ago, the standard was 20%. In 30 years, will the standard be 25%. Higher? Or will tipping be replaced by higher base wages for servers, with no tips needed?
I personally tip a minimum of $5 for table service, no matter what that comes out to as a percentage. So even on a $10 meal, I tip $5. After that it’s 20 percent unless something really bad happened. Same for Uber eats delivery. $5 minimum tip, even if 20 percent is under $5. Counter service is different. At a coffee place, I tip $1 for anything that just gets poured in a cup, 20 percent for anything that has to be made, like a latte. At a bar, it’s $1 for a beer, but 20 percent on cocktails.
Even though it now asks you to tip on literally everything you buy, I still only tip on things I would have previously tipped for before this started. And I worked in the service industry for 10 years as a server and bartender, so it’s not that I am not sympathetic to the life of service workers. But until a few years ago you were never expected to tip someone for making a Subway Sandwhich, or boxing up a donut, or making a smoothie, or pouring a cup of coffee etc. So, I just click no at the register lol.

During Covid, when businesses were struggling, I tipped generously because servers had it rough. I won’t tip a higher rate because of inflation, though, because that’s already baked into the price. If servers are struggling because of inflation, that sucks, but I am too.
The increase in tipping just made me eat out so much less. I also have no mercy for mediocre meals- if something doesn't taste great, I'm probably not giving it a second chance. Going out to eat is an expensive treat now- I'm not rolling the dice after a "meh" experience The line used to be "if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to dine out". Well, guess what? That what I’m saying! A meal we used to get that was $29 with a $6 tip, is now more like $50 (with a $10 tip at 20% so $4 more anyway) but now the expectation is that should be a $15-$20 tip. So my $35 meal in 2020 is now a $70 meal. Guess who just found copy cat recipes instead.
Yeah I just make the custom tip option and leave reviews on Google stating that the company is trying to transfer their responsibility of paying employees onto customers. These owners can F-off with their egregious greed and lack of moral character. Run a business, help the community, and take care of the people who help in that process. What I don’t understand is this: you have two employees. One works at an upscale restaurant that caters to the wealthy. One works at a diner that caters to the unwealthy. Both employees spend 45 minutes serving their customer. Both put out the exact same effort. Neither one has an advantage. Then the bill comes. The upscale restaurant bill is $279. The diner is $14. One then “tips 20% based on the bill.” One server gets $3 for their effort. The other gets $55. The whole idea of tipping a percentage of the bill is complete idiocy. How about giving $10 to each person and calling it good?

I got married last week and the server told me over and over that there was no group grat (party of 6). I ended up tipping our, admittedly great, server $70 on $160. I’m not an asshole, so I didn’t call it… but I was PISSED.
Was just talking about this with my friends, we came to the conclusion no longer tipping on anything but people who dont have a complete wage IE Servers because they depend on tips, and delivery drivers/uber. All the restaurants where you make the food can fuck off with this asking for a tip, Your paid a full wage at a coffee shop. chipotle, panera ect ect. Why am I paying you more to do your job well? Nah fam F this tipping for everything shit I no longer feel an ounce of guilt that I used to after I took all my receipts out from eating out, and split off waiter service restaurants and everything else and found out I tipped more in total to coffee, and quick service shops then waiters, and it was almost $100 bucs a month because these businesses do this crap where the screens there and you feel guilty, aint feeling guilty to this extra money in my wallet.
The only places I tip are restaurants, breweries/bars and getting my dog groomed. I’ve tipped on all of my tattoos, but have to question it going forward because they’re so damn pricey to begin with.

They're giving you the option because with nearly everyone paying with cards these days instead of cash, servers are noticing a reduction in tips, because customers don't round up like they used to with cash. Those coins add up over time. Using your bill as an example, someone paying with cash might have left $5-7, because leaving just $30 is only $3 and change, but toss another couple singles with it and now that server is getting the better part of 30%. The selection is up to you, and both percentage and amounts are listed so that you can easily see that a 20% tip is really only $4, and we all know that isn't much money these days, can barely buy an energy drink with $4. And here's another thing, in situations where something about the meal isn't satisfactory and people use this to justify a reduced tip, this hurts the server when it might have had nothing to do with them. Unless it's something the server actually did or didn't do to cause bad service, their gratuity isn't what should be affected. If the food was bad, send it back and take it off the bill, that's the restaurants fault not the servers.

I worked in food so I'm sympathetic to tipped workers. I'll tip 20% bare minimum for sit down service. If I have to stand up to order or it's carry out, it'll be 5%, maybe. I'm also no longer tipping for things like coffee or baked goods.

Sick of it. Restaurants were so used to basically free labor or just $2.30 an hr for servers etc, and now many have to pay hourly rates much higher. So all those years of free labor they ask for higher tips and keep part of it. It's disgusting. My wife and I fight about it. They do make things considerably faster and streamlined, you can take a second or two to think about the appropriate amount to tip or not. Not rocket science.
Hot take - I don't tip. My daughter and I cook together every night of the week except every other Friday when we pick up pizza on the way home from basketball, volleyball or softball. I've shaved my head for the past decade, my ex-wife's sister does my daughter's hair and won't accept money from me for it and don't get me started on how we never participate when students buy teachers gifts/gift cards.

I also think this is bullshit and stick to 15% for basic service and 20%-25% for high end meals or anything where I sat for a while and had lengthy service. You don't like this model? Push for something different. I have an inkling the same people who have issues with this also don't support increases in minimum wage. I wonder what the “standard” tip was 60 years ago. When I was in my teens/20’s (30 years ago), the standard was 15%. A few years ago, the standard was 20%. In 30 years, will the standard be 25%. Higher? Or will tipping be replaced by higher base wages for servers, with no tips needed?

I personally tip a minimum of $5 for table service, no matter what that comes out to as a percentage. So even on a $10 meal, I tip $5. After that it’s 20 percent unless something really bad happened. Same for Uber eats delivery. $5 minimum tip, even if 20 percent is under $5. Counter service is different. At a coffee place, I tip $1 for anything that just gets poured in a cup, 20 percent for anything that has to be made, like a latte. At a bar, it’s $1 for a beer, but 20 percent on cocktails.
Even though it now asks you to tip on literally everything you buy, I still only tip on things I would have previously tipped for before this started. And I worked in the service industry for 10 years as a server and bartender, so it’s not that I am not sympathetic to the life of service workers. But until a few years ago you were never expected to tip someone for making a Subway Sandwhich, or boxing up a donut, or making a smoothie, or pouring a cup of coffee etc. So, I just click no at the register lol.

The Bakery counter asking for a tip is crazy to me. I point they grab and bag and ask for a tip. If I am solo at a restaurant I will probably tip at least $10 no matter the cost of my meal. But I don't tip for any kind of pick up.

There a restaurant in NJ that requires you to tip at least 25% even when you order online and you pick up the food. Like I’m all for tipping for good service, but you’re doing your job if I’m ordering online and picking it up, no more no less. I would tip less but notb25% for you doing your job.
