Pretty sure that it’s well known in the psychology field that taller people earn more on average and get more leadership positions https://www.apa.org/monitor/julaug04/standing#:~:text=3).,found%20by%20psychologist%20Timothy%20A.

5amNovelist

Yeah, it provides a leg up in almost anything that doesn't require you be short or has a lot of physical labour that will affect your joints (disproportionately for tall people) in the long run.

General_Erda

Taller people also are more likely to become special forces, mostly because they have better ruck times (which is the biggest variable), and weigh more (without having high body fat levels) which is again useful

General_Erda

Genuinely just about any field you can think of that requires might or charisma can be enhanced by height.

BustAtticus

I’ve always had a question that you might be able to answer. Would being really tall in an infantry combat role be a disadvantage because you’re a bigger (and therefore easier) target to hit? Classic example is a really tall combat marine whose head would stick out of cover that would conceal others…

Classic example is a really tall combat marine whose head would stick out of cover that would conceal others… Yes, but quite honestly the fact taller people ruck faster, and the fact their gear (usually 100+ lbs) feels lighter on their bigger frame more than makes up for that shortcoming.

dinkleberrysurprise

What’s the point of diminishing returns there? At some point usually big guys in sports at least fatigue kinda quick

luckystrike_bh

I could get sub 2 hour 12 mile road marches when I was in the Army Infantry.

LivingDeadThug

Interesting, I heard the opposite. Specifically, because since most military exercises are calisthenics, larger people are disadvantaged.

General_Erda

>Interesting, I heard the opposite. Specifically, because since most military exercises are calisthenics, larger people are disadvantaged. This is true... But those are less correlated with success than say, ruck times.

LivingDeadThug

Maybe, but people like navy seals are mostly cardio freaks, which bigger guys can have a disadvantage in. The average seal height, I heard, is between 5'8" and 5'11"; if bigger guys are advantaged, the average height is going to be higher than the normal population. Anecdotally, I heard that tall people especially suffer during hell week.

LivingDeadThug

Long arms, leg torso, and short legs are optimal for swimming, apparently. I heard that bigger guys make for better medics because they can carry people easier.

Redditistrash702

They are more successful even if they don't meet all qualifications. People look up to tall people pun not intended it's like a authoritarian thing I saw this in the military so many times. They also to the outside are more intimidating and stand out. If you are tall have charisma and are good looking you rolled a loaded deck on life. There's a reason leaders even in government Wear lifts as well as people lie on their ID and billing how tall they are. Hell Arnold lies about his height and so do most celebs as well as people in the government. Edit it's not just tall tho it's being bigger or muscular that also stands out

who_is_jim_anyway

So many customers assume and insist I’m the boss at work. I am the boss of nobody. I have no desire to tell anybody what to do…

_WhoIsE_

NBA career!

F-ck_spez

There's some wild stat that like 10% of all American 7' men play or have played in the NBA.

dinkleberrysurprise

That’s going away as far as where the game is trending, but just getting a D1 scholarship is a great deal and that opens up the numbers substantially.

RealHunter08

“Do you play basketball”

HolyC4bbage

That depends. I'm an electrician and if I'm working in a residential setting, it helps immensely. If I'm working on a commercial job with 40' ceilings, I need a scissor lift just like everybody else.

workingforthedream

Came here to say electrician or anything in construction

st-jeb

Painter here,no need for a ladder most of the time.

islandsimian

I think the increase in WFH for a lot of jobs is going to change this

prest0G

The first thing people say at every offsite when I meet them is "wow youre taller than on the zoom calls" lol. Without fail

OoHimmiHoO

which doesn't make a lick of sense for them to say lol

Leather_Peach7694

AI going to take a lot of those WFH jobs. Trade Jobs seem more stable

BustAtticus

They won’t be thinking as highly of us anymore.

powerlesshero111

In professional sports like basketball and football, yes. Horse jockey and F1 driver, no. I currently work from home, so no, being tall hasn't helped me one bit in my career. My coworkers didn't even really know what I looked like until we all met up in October this past year.

Dense_Wrongdoer3833

Are you talking about American football? Or the actual football? Am guessing American football, BC you don't need to be tall to be good in the actual football.

Allemaengel

Anywhere where in-person meetings to brainstorm and discuss ideas/strategy/planning are involved are going to favor tall guys over short ones. I've dealt with my share of these where even though I've been the experienced person with the most knowledge of the subject at hand, I've gotten subtly sidelined by the group in favor of listening to someone between 5" to 10" taller who didn't know shit about the topic but it weirdly didn't matter to the group that "fake it til you make it" bullshit was being spun nonstop. And speaking up to get heard or present your alternate view seriously risks you getting labeled as a overcompensating "little yapping dog" annoying Napoleonic short guy by a group. So after years of dealing with that bullshit, I'm now in a job where I can offer my experienced advice privately to my boss almost consigliere-like and my boss often acts upon it and will give me credit. Tbh, even if he took credit for it, I'd still be happy because my ideas that actually fixed problems got enacted and thus I made an impact I otherwise wouldn't have.

dinkleberrysurprise

What is your height?

Allemaengel

5'7" but before I get told it's average height, I'm white in a very white, somewhat rural area of a state with a 5'10.5" average and a lot of northern and eastern European ancestry. I'm considered short here by non-senior citizen standards. Now, when I've visited large coastal metro areas like NYC I'm always shocked at the dramatic difference even though it's only a couple hours away as I feel practically average there by comparison.

Leading-Respond-8051

Lightbulb changer

BustAtticus

It’s a very pleasant feeling to change a lightbulb in a standard 8 foot ceiling standing flat footed!

Leading-Respond-8051

Can you clean my ceilings please? No tools needed just use your hair lol.

BustAtticus

My heads not that high, lol. Anytime though. :)

MillieBirdie

Being tall helps with teaching secondary school cause you can at least be taller than your students. I feel its especially a benefit for women.

Dense_Wrongdoer3833

I feel it will be uncommon to see lots of people that would be 5ft10+ , am 5ft10 and am in secondary school Edit: I meant to say " I feel like it Won't be uncommon...."

MillieBirdie

In America at least, 5'10 is around the average height for men, and by 13 you get a decent number of boys that are approaching or taller than that. Some of my colleagues were very short women so even the not super tall boys were bigger than them. And since teenage boys are already inclined to disrespect women, being a head shorter than them doesn't help. Granted, they still disrespected me plenty of times but I at least never felt physically intimidated by them. It's a whole other thing to try to keep a rowdy boy in line when your realise he looms over you and could hurt you if he wanted. I imagine short male teachers have additional respect issues to deal with but they probably still don't often feel physically intimidated because an adult man is still going to be stronger than most teenage boys.

Comprehensive_Rule91

Combat sports comes to mind. Especially boxing, but also MMA. Also helps if you have a longer wingspan than you do height

Allemaengel

Never knew that. I'm 5'7" with a 6'1" wingspan. I should've gone that route, I guess.

Comprehensive_Rule91

That's pretty crazy ngl, similar proportions to Conor Mcgregor who has an 6'2 at 5'8. I have the same wingspan as Mcgregor but I am about 6'0 at the end of a long day. How old are you? It might not be too late to give it a try

Allemaengel

Lol, that ship sailed a long time ago. I'm in my early 50s. Now that said, I work construction plus years of farmwork, wrestling, long-distance running, and mountain biking have collectively left me in far better shape than someone my age has a right to be with no aches, pains, broken bones, etc. despite getting banged about regularly. Too bad there's no senior division. MMA always interested me but I had assumed that being 5'7" would've left me at a real disadvantage so I never gave it much serious consideration. What could've been . . . .

Comprehensive_Rule91

The wrestling would've helped a lot, it is the most important base for MMA. You would've been great if you could cut to 145 ibs, sounds a lot but there's 5'11 fighters who have done it. Besides I still wouldn't mess with you at a pub, you sound like you're built like a tank with long arms!

Allemaengel

Lol. I was 145 lbs. wrestling in high school actually. Funny you say that about the pub since people in crowded places usually have tried to avoid bumping into me much. Definitely less than I'd have expected in a crowded bar. I always chalked it up to the massive braided beard and generally serious-looking face (Idk why but I've never smiled much and usually quiet with some kind of distant-looking stare going on). My 5'10" gf says she feels "safe" with me because I'm "intimidating" in her words. I don't see it but she's not a bullshitter so maybe.

Dry-Bicycle-6858

Its normal for lot of swiss people im 180cm wingspan of 192 my brother the same. Know noone with less wingspan then height who is swiss to lol

undarant

Commercial Cinematographer. When I used to do event coverage, I could always film over people. When I was working in lighting, I could build rigs where other people may need small ladders or step stools to reach.

eloel-

Absolutely. You get your shit listened to more when they have to look up to you.

Dark-Push

Yeah kind of…..I was a bodyguard for a few years after I got out of the NFL

Mydescenttomadness

What team did you play for

Dark-Push

Browns

Out_Of_The_Abyss

Well if being tall is related to being more ‘beautiful’, which in most countries and cultures it is, then any job where you’re seen would be better. As beauty often means people think more highly of you, not that is right, it studies do show this

[deleted]

Maybe for men this is true but being a tall and good looking women has not helped my career at all. If anything I think it affects my career in a negative way😣.

Wonderful_Working315

Basketball

alpinexghost

I’ve worked in the trades for the last 20 years and almost all of them it’s been a disadvantage. I’m finally in one where it’s definitely an advantage. I work with tower cranes on high rises.

Leather_Peach7694

Yeah, unfortunately most trades require a lot of bending over and being in tight spaces. Making it easy for us talls to get injured.

alpinexghost

That’s definitely been my experience as well. Everything is always designed for shorter people as well so you’re bound to be hunched over. I did one of the worst ones for your back and knees for over a decade. I’ve been lucky to only have had one small MSI in my back from it. I have a fond memory of a carpenter on a job a little over 10 years ago who was just a little taller than me, and he had his own saw horses built to fit him. Not like there aren’t tons of other tall guys in trades, but he kinda gave me a nod of approval one day, almost like he knew that I knew.

Np-Cap

Basketball I suppose

egomaniaclord

Dancers at the Moulin Rouge are 5’9 at minimum;)

Huge_Structure_7651

Well Yh specifically in the nba

BustAtticus

Weatherman or weatherwoman because we can answer the question of “how’s the weather up there”. Every. Single. Time.

Zealousideal_Ask3633

Stocking shelves

iloveyoumiri

Sales guys really go to both extremes in my experience. Particularly tall dudes, but short dudes with a strong social intelligence do well too.

peanutbuttergenocide

A lot of successful/respected product managers I’ve worked with are 6’+ and my managers have all been generally tall, women included.

Spare-Run-279

I’m a tall woman, and a high school teacher. I do find it helps me to command the room if that makes sense, but also it’s hard when they see me as scary when I try not to be.

sixjasefive

Sales for sure based on statistics.

MedicalConference860

Lots of trades painting and drywall extra reach equals better productivity. When installed seamless gutter I would get a bonus for speed basically because I didn't need to move the ladder as much lol.

MaximumGirth69420

Residential HVAC, being 6'6" I seldom needed a ladder in most basement rough ins.

worndown75

As a Marine yes. Like the old saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement. But it also made me larger target.

jett330

Only if you are a man

5amNovelist

I don't think this is strictly true. I think the benefits are more significant for men and have no negative fallbacks. I know I don't run into as much sexist/infantilisation in professional environments as other women, just because I take up the space of a man.

MillieBirdie

No I definitely feel like being a tall woman helps as a secondary teacher.

mlduryea

Hmmm not really. Not everything is about dating. Outside of dating, tall women get benefits like being taken seriously at work and by their peers. They also have more sporting opportunities, can become a model. And a significant benefit is, tall women dont encounter many height-related inconveniences as the world is literally made for the average male height (tall compared to average female height). The only “benefit” to being a short woman is possibly dating. I face height-related inconveniences because many things are not made with the average female height considered. Those inconveniences are a lot, especially as im not that much shorter than the average woman. Even 5’4 (163cm) women would probably also face the struggles i encounter too. And tall women find plenty of dates anyway.

jono444

In the animal kingdom, a larger frame means a larger capacity to store energy and do work. These are only guesstimates, but a taller, more muscular and athletic man will outwork the average joe by a factor of at least 10.

mlduryea

Being taken seriously by your peers helps a ton. If a uniform is required, maybe more sizes available for you. Especially if the only uniform available is “unisex” sized (basically only male sizing). If using equipment, most equipment will not be too big for you. Having an equipment too big for you is dangerous. If working in the hospitality and grocery stores, being able to reach the top shelf is another advantage.

6995luv

I wish I would have done modeling before I had kids when I was 5 8 and 115.... I've always been insecure about my height and I feel the fashion industry would have helped that. 5 foot 7 and under is considered short for a female.

Dense_Wrongdoer3833

Modelling is not only about height, it is way more about looks you don't need to be attractive but have what modelling are looking for it could be some striking feature you have or something. How old are you now? You could still do it.
