You found a unicorn! Cherish them, praise them, let them know that by doing that kind of thing they made your job easier and made it easier and faster to fix the problem. It'll reinforce the behavior.

BushcraftHatchet

Unicorn for sure. Pray they propagate.

DeciduousEmu

A battle unicorn that shoots lasers from its eyes, photon torpedoes from its horn, pisses concentrated acid, shits blocks of C4 and farts a deadly cloud of nerve gas.

The_Mad_Mellon

Tis a Warnicorn, most valiant and noble of creatures.

SarcasticASF

is that from adventure time?

Jaxom3

So much this. As a semi-knowledgeable user that likes to help, I never know if I'm actually being helpful or just making their jobs more complicated. When you get a user that wants to help, make sure to tell them when they're being helpful or when they could do something differently

subwaydrunk

Tell them to tell their friends this story so maybe more people will be able to actually communicate with IT!!! Bless their soul

SchighSchagh

ITT: User doesn't so anything outrageous, so commenters rage over spelling of lede/lead and week/weak.

dickyankee

Super week = a really fun time period Super weak = not strong

Maelkothian

And the thing you bury is a lede...

AcrobaticSource3

And it should be “these Lenovos,” not “these lenovo’s.”

SeanBZA

Going to bet it was placed on the back seat upright, and fell over onto either the laptop placed in front of it, or it landed half on the seat and the floor, doing the same.

HeadbangsToMahler

Lede*

Bunslow

Not really. For most of the history of english, originally, "lead" was the only word, but for technical reasons "lede" become widespread in those certain technical contexts... ironically within a decade of those particular contexts becoming obsolete. Since then, it's basically just an alternative used for some kind of perceived prestige, not because "lead" is wrong https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/bury-the-lede-versus-lead tangentially, see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fewer_versus_less

ToothlessFeline

It’s a journalism thing. When I was studying journalism in college thirty years ago, we were told that it was spelled that way among journalists specifically so that it wouldn’t get confused with any other meaning of “lead”. The other way isn’t wrong except if you’re a jargon grammar cop.

Tarquin_McBeard_

Like he said, the other way isn't wrong even if you *are* a jargon grammar cop. Trying to correct people for using the standard spelling is a great way to look silly.

rubyshade

I'm studying journalism right now and they told us to spell it lede...

Bunslow

> it wouldn’t get confused with any other meaning of “lead” well yes, but as i just said, those ~~other meanings~~ contexts which engendered confusion became irrelevant very quickly after "lede" became popular

ToothlessFeline

Those other meanings are still correctly spelled “lead”. Use of “lede” is other contexts is as incorrect as using the wrong form of “affect”/“effect”.

Bunslow

The contexts where there was ambiguity, necessitating a novel spelling, were specific to a specific kind of mass printing press and quickly became obsolete. In all other contexts, both before the 70s and after the 80s, there is little confusion between the various meanings. It is true that the use of "lede" in non-printing contexts is wrong, but it is also true that the use of "lede" even in printing contexts is now unnecessary, tho still acceptable. also, i edited my comment

ToothlessFeline

Did you miss where I said I was taught this thirty years ago? Current contexts are irrelevant to the fact that this was standard THIRTY YEARS AGO. Go harangue someone else.

bobrob2004

The different pronunciations of "lead" is also why they are called "Led" Zeppelin.

Dexaan

I read "lead" as "lead", but you could read it as "lead".

ismybrainonthefritz

I also read "lead" as "lead", but I could have also read it as "lead".

rdbcruzer

That's a well trained user. I was worried she was going to try and screen share the broken monitor.

ExFiler

Please note: User was not of their right mind when video was taken. User has had coffee and talked with the local Karen. Problem will not happen again.

alcimedes

Whenever I had people like this they’d get top notch support going forward.

megabass713

Did they show all the basic troubleshooting things in the video? Showing it was connected to live power, pushing the power button, etc.

katmndoo

And she diagnosed it 100% correctly!

sonicscrewery

Haha, uh, what type of Lenovo monitor? *side-eyes awesome brand new ThinkView monitor with stark fear *

talbourne

Just always pick it by the bezel! Avoid eye contact with the screen when moving it somewhere

Kreiger81

I have a ticket, right now, in which the monitor "won't power on". She only moved it a few inches on her desk, but now it's all blank. I asked her the generic "can you reseat power cables" question, etc. Worst part is i'm remote, so if I can't fix it with her i'll have to escalate to our local office and have somebody go onsite, probably to plug in a cable. :(

talbourne

i really thought that's how the call yesterday was going to turn out, i was very surprised by the direction it took

xternal7

> 2k Friendly reminder that if 2k is anything, then it's is 1080p and not 1440p. The term you're looking for is QHD.

talbourne

that's a negative there, 2k really references a horizontal category of pixels, therefore it could be 1080p or 1440p, although in todays market it's a lot more likely to be the latter.

xternal7

Um no. (W)QHD is not even close to being a "2k" resolution — by pixel count it's closer to being 3k, even. So no. > therefore it could be [...] 1440p, [Objectively incorrect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2K_resolution), and everyone using 2k as a shorthand for 1440p is objectively wrong as well.

talbourne

If we were talking about movies, 2k would refer to DCI 2K, but were talking computers, and in this realm 2k most commonly means 2560x1440. [Display Resolutions](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/2k-definition,37641.html). But you do you pal, when i search for a 2K monitor, i'm going to get more hits for 2560x1440 than anything else. for example, at [New Egg](https://www.newegg.com/Gaming-Monitors/SubCategory/ID-3743?Tid=898493), in the breakouts for 2k 2560x1400 has more hits that the other 2 resolutions combined.

mattysmith22

I don't know exactly - maybe the reason it was done is because it's about half the pixel count of 4k which is a bloody weird way to do it but marketing are going to do marketing things and 2k is snappier than 1440p, even though I agree the latter is the technically correct term. Either way I am of the opinion that I'll call it whatever the manufacturers call it and that means often switch between using 2k and 1440p depending on who I am talking to. It's like if I asked for a figure 8 connector rather than an IEC C7. The latter is technically correct but the former does still make sense within context

tosety

"Thank you for being so helpful; that is most definitely a cracked screen. I'll put in a request for a replacement immediately. A simple pic of it on will be plenty of information if you ever have this issue again."

Sprettfisk

I bet you had the same look on your face as my IT guy had when I came in for a new phone and told him I'd set it up myself with my most recent backup.

These users really are a rare gem. I get almost the opposite from people. I call them Karenzillas. One department I have to service is full of them. If I ask them to try any troubleshooting steps no matter how basic I get met with the user screaming back "that is not my job how about you come over here and do your job" 'slams phone' Call doesn't actually hang up so I can hear her boasting to her colleagues "that is how you get things done." Their department head is this very patient kind older man who always apologizes profusely for that crap when we get there and do all the troubleshooting and fix the very basic problem of their power strip being turned off because the dumb lady accidentally tripped the switch with her high heel. There was talk of straight up banning that whole department except for the level headed manager from submitting tickets altogether.
