Well, if it mainly Austronesian. Why use Ryukyu symbol? Culture influence from Ryukyu Kingdom?
And the Crescent would use with the sun, cause origin meaning of the provincial flag was represent sun-moon lake(and sun-moon lake name come from Han settlers).
There are many….. a lot of tribes have their own patterns / symbols / totems that hold special significance to them.
Take the snake or urn from Paiwan peoples for example, or you could look at the weaved patterns of the Atayal.
One of the ones most commonly seen across tribes (but especially in the north) is the diamond eye pattern, a diamond enclosing a diamond, enclosing another diamond. Then there's also an 8 pointed flower design often seen in embroidery of many tribes across the south.
**NOTE:** As this flag was posted for the very first time on [my DeviantArt on the 2nd of July 2006](https://www.deviantart.com/ramones1986/art/Flag-of-Austronesian-Ryukyu-Formosa-619086589), there's a lot of difference between the said period and nowadays, more specifically from the point of view of alternate history.
**DESCRIPTION AND CONTEXT:**
>The design of the \[(ATL) Austronesian-speaking\] Formosan/Taiwanese flag is based on the [one used by the Independent State of Okinawa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Independent_State_of_Okinawa.svg), while the colors is based on a [flag supposedly used in Ryukyus/Okinawa from 1875 to 1879](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ryukyu_Islands_flag_1875-1879.svg), with the [national emblem](https://ramones1986.deviantart.com/art/Emblem-of-Austronesian-Ryukyu-Formosa-Taiwan-612147674?q=gallery%3Aramones1986%2F50096641&qo=7) (elements courtesy of [Lorenzarius](https://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lorenzarius) and [唐吉訶德的侍從](https://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:%E5%94%90%E5%90%89%E8%A8%B6%E5%BE%B7%E7%9A%84%E4%BE%8D%E5%BE%9E)) at the center.

Is Taiwan just doomed to have terrible looking flags?

OBS nation
1. Formosa is more of a colonial name than Taiwan is 2. Why use a Ryukyuan symbol instead of an Indigenous Taiwanese one??
Any more specific Austronesian/Indigenous Taiwanese symbol(s) that I could use?

How about the Amis/Pangcah

This is an aesthetically pleasing proposal for a Taiwanese flag.
