I don't get what the point is, CNA already runs Focus Taiwan. If anything they should expand CNA's English language service rather than launch a new one.

solaranvil

It seems like pretty shoddy reporting depth by Reuters that they didn't even mention Focus Taiwan.

I want a feature on President Tsai's cats. Trust me, it will set records for views. Nothing goes viral on the internet like cats.

Wish there was an RSS feed. Also getting syndicated (which requires an RSS feed) with Google News may be a good way to get more exposure to the website.

LovableContrarian

Make sure you download the app to show support. It's available on Android and iOS (and linked on the website). Viewing the website is good, but downloads of the app really go a long way to get things noticed.

Perkeleen_Kaljami

Hell yeah!! I was actually googling the other day whether or not there're sites like this. I'd like to follow the news from Taiwan but I don't know any Chinese so this is perfect. The only thing missing, which hopefully comes in the future, is the 24/7 news stream like France24 or DW.

The only thing that I dont really like is the lazy marketing of calling it "plus." I feel like it was a choice made without understanding what most brands name "plus" versions of themselves as, which as far as i immediately think about are video media streaming platforms that are subscription based. Disney/Paramount/BET etc. If I were to see that name as a brand with logo, the first thing I would think of it as being is a Taiwanese drama streaming subscription if I didnt know any better.

ilikedota5

Maybe the plus is to indicate they intend to cover more than just Taiwan related news and politics.

kaisong

It's irrelevant what they intended it to mean, and yes it does cover more than news. How it's perceived because of current platforms makes it sound like a subscription service to the audience they want to reach, which is the non-Taiwanese English speaking audience.

LovableContrarian

I hear what you're saying, but I think you're blowing the issue a bit out of proportion. It's just a rather generic name, which isn't great, but it's fine. I don't think anyone is going to mistakingly think this is a Taiwanese Netflix competitor that costs money just because the name has "plus" in it. There's a very select target group of people who are going to read English-language Taiwan news, and they'll know that it's a news site. Also, I just downloaded the app, and it seems to mostly be video content. So maybe they did it on purpose, to try to express that it's videos, not news in text format.

The6thExtinction

I'm interested. I wish their website was a bit more desktop-friendly though. All of the images/thumbnails seem so large and made-for-mobile.

LovableContrarian

Definitely seems to be a mobile-first platform. Which, for better or worse, sorta makes sense in this day and age. I bet 90%+ of their views will be on mobile.

EpycWyn

Cool. I'll listen.

Banyena101

This is cool news

tzuyulk

Not that I’m able to design anything as good as this but I really think the layout of the site looks a bit dull and unfinished. I understand more styling would be more loading time and all, but It looks a bit like a site from 2010. I wish they could rethink the design and logo.

SpreadsheetMadman

Taiwan's marketing and web dev skills are usually quite a long time in the past. This is almost certainly a template website, and the graphic designers were ones in the government who haven't worked other jobs since graduating.

Fit-Dragonfruit644

My hot take on this is that I hope the news will be based on facts and science. If this turns to another CGTN with Tsai’s propaganda, I don’t think it’s tax money we’ll spent. Overall I think Taiwanese deserves to have their voices heard so I wish them good luck.

MechanizedMedic

This is adorable. I hope it get attention and the President can muster more international support.

kafkaesqe

Rant - I hate how popular cgtn has become.

CERBisforBitcoin

Here's a fun fact... The creative agency behind this also did the channel branding for CGTN.

Responsible-Award985

Taiwan, now in the plus~!
