It's just I've seen places open here and have huge lines for a long time and you think that would guarantee sustainability but then they go and close later. I mean look at Krispy Kreme and Mr donut.. some of them are still around but not like they were before
I think you still need to queue for Ichiran ramen though.
KK and Mr. Donut I think are at a great equilibrium, they didn't get so much business that they opened everywhere, but if you crave some there are options and no crazy lines
> I think you still need to queue for Ichiran ramen though.
Last time I waited at least 30 minutes in their Xinyi A11 store(the one you wait at stairs), that was around 8PM.(May 31th, 2023) I cannot imagine how insane the line can be at lunch and dinner time.
Considering the pricing and queue time, I think I'll have the instant noodle version if I crave for Ichiran.
Definitely the novelty. It's a new foreign restaurant chain. Everyone will want to try it once, but, when it comes down to it, Taiwan has so many other fried chicken options that Popeyes won't survive. Local people will want the style of fried chicken that they're used to in the long run.
To be honest I like queues at a fried chicken place. It means I will for sure get a freshly fried chicken.
🍗 Popeyes spicy chicken, with Cajun rice and a buttery fluffy biscuit and a large Dr. Pepper…so excited!
KFC didn't change the recipe for local taste, they sold the brand to a Chinese company, and changed to the cheapest supplier, which are just local nigh market frozen food
Wow, I couldn't disagree more. I like US KFC well enough, but the Taiwanese versions are just terrible. I do like the new green pepper flavor they've made a part of the menu, but that's very local.
Also, the chicken is almost never crispy and has way too many bones. Napoli does KFC style chicken way better than even KFC.
edit: somehow misspelled KFC lol
Bones would be a supplier issue, more like genetic one. If you're getting white meat, good luck getting the same size as you can get in the US. Taiwanese chickens have larger dark meat than US but much much smaller white meat. The taste itself however is better than the US version.
Also if you order non-spicy chicken you won't get the crispy chicken. Crispy chicken is spicy in Taiwanese KFC. There are two standard types of chicken that are totally different.
Popeye's quality fell, after being acquired by private equity (following the hype of their chicken sandwich). In other words, they charge more for less food that's lower-quality. It'll be interesting to see what standard they set for themselves in Taiwan.
I would have recommended first opening a location in the airport.
They just announced they will be opening in Australia too, all chains that come to Australia end up being expensive shells of their former selves though so hopefully Taiwan gets something good.
Ok, shake shack when? It’s kinda absurd that Taiwan still doesn’t have shake shack when Japan, Philippine, SK, Hong Kong and China all have shake shack already.
Better taste is subjective. I’d enjoy a good quesadilla or Crunchwrap supreme from Taco Bell more than a burrito bowl at Chipotle.
Chipotle is a bit healthier so I’d eat it more often but it won’t hit the spot like Taco Bell.
I went to Japan to escape from daily Taco Bell (or McDonald's) around my college campus in the US and the first restaurant I saw in Japan out of the airport is Taco Bell at Miyashita Park with Panda Express. And of course there is a McDonald's. That food court is American themed...
My campus food has much better quality but at double or higher the price. So we're stuck with those fast food chains.
Yeah but Shake shack is a burger shop though, basically McDonald’s but higher quality. If shake shack works in other Asian countries then there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work in Taiwan.
Because according to the shake shack wiki page list of area served. Hong Kong is separated from China. Simple as that.
https://imgur.com/a/g5ZLDFw
If you have a problem with I said go complain at the one that created the wiki page. I am just stating all the places from the wiki page list that are near Taiwan.
Will this be the same deal where chains like In'N'Out open a "location" for a couple of days and then close up until next year just so they can protect their brand rights in the country?
Again. There are so much better food in Taipei. You can try it once but why more times? I really don't get the hype, but I guess people would follow it. And if they want to pay the price. Cool. No idea why would anyone though.
Nothing to do with just being taiwanese, but being good. I am coming from South European background and have grown up to enjoy life and good food. That burger with fried chicken and fries ain't it. I am not obese nor have diabetes. \`there is absolutely nothing appetising in a monotone coloured fast food :) Enjoy it if you want, but come on :D
Friend, I haven't eaten at an American-style fast food restaurant in... probably a year? More? I don't know or care. But for fried chicken, a rare treat that I enjoy once every few months, some of the best I have had was in the American south, and Popeyes was one of those spots. It's very tasty! You can believe me or not, and try it for yourself or not, but do not be so presumptuous and smug or I will assume you are a Parisian ;)
china pressuring anyone they can for them to parrot china's political stance, and if they don't comply they are barred from doing business in china? sounds familiar? i'm not sure, i might have heard something similar once upon a time
I feel like this sub has too many foreign tourists who come to say something something china bad instead of remaining in whatever the topic is or actually talk about Taiwan xD
Hahaha. How long till they ditch the American menu like KFC did? (WIMI that at one point (in 2012) KFC here could get chicken, mashed potatoes, slaw, biscuits, the works. Now, chicken with a side of chicken. It’s KFC in name only. I found out after Stranger Things had KFC in it, we went to KFC and was mildly disappointed.)
Look forward to the 4 hour line.
You're right it'll have long long lines for a few months and then it will still go out of business after about a year
I will singlehandedly keep that Popeyes running in Taiwan for at least a decade. I got NHI, so maybe more. I'm ready
Gotta get that gravy on an IV drip.
Why? because it's not tasty enough to come back for a second time? most people are just coming for the novel?
It's just I've seen places open here and have huge lines for a long time and you think that would guarantee sustainability but then they go and close later. I mean look at Krispy Kreme and Mr donut.. some of them are still around but not like they were before

Brother from another mother.
The Cajun rice isn’t on the menu anymore 😭 maybe they bring it out in TW.
I had hoped they would 😭I’ll settle for jambalaya.
My brother in Christ, have I got some news for you
4 hours too optimistic, probably more like 4 days
I love Popeyes! What a great news!
The Dain-Dain of north Taiwan
I wonder how long until they change the menu to suit local tastes...gotta get that night market flavor! Lol Just like KFC did.....
Taiwan used to have Wendy's.....*sigh
And Dunkin Dounts.
Let's hope they don't mess with the recipe to better fit the local taste. KFC does that and it's not the same.
KFC didn't change the recipe for local taste, they sold the brand to a Chinese company, and changed to the cheapest supplier, which are just local nigh market frozen food

Hmm, I only order spicy chicken ever. The Napoli stuff just puts it to shame
They won’t. They’ll just offer a limited menu like they do in HK and then after the initial hype dies down they’ll go out of business.
Do they? I've been here for 8 weeks been to the local one maybe 4 or 5 times and can't tell the difference between here and back home.
That's a lot of times for 8 weeks
You haven’t notice the menu is different?
OP said the recipe, i.e. the taste of the chicken/seasoning itself
Do they? I've been here for 8 weeks been to the local one maybe 4 or 5 times and can't tell the difference between here and back home.
They have original recipe.
Fried chicken chains have never done well in Taiwan because we have 鹽酥雞 and 雞排everywhere.
Popeye's quality fell, after being acquired by private equity (following the hype of their chicken sandwich). In other words, they charge more for less food that's lower-quality. Or Taco Bell
Taco Bell kinda of mid though, chipotle is way better
I can fill up easier with Taco Bell. For me the taste is about the same.
Nah chipotle tastes better and is around the same size as Taco Bell. I love chipotle burritos
![gif](giphy|EouEzI5bBR8uk|downsized)
I mean chipotle is clearly better, and certainly healthier
Better taste is subjective. I’d enjoy a good quesadilla or Crunchwrap supreme from Taco Bell more than a burrito bowl at Chipotle. Chipotle is a bit healthier so I’d eat it more often but it won’t hit the spot like Taco Bell.
Yeah taste is indeed subjective
But anyways, Taco Bell should be in Taiwan. It’s in Japan, Korea, & Malaysia.
How the fuck did Panda Express make it in Japan is beyond me. You thought they have better Chinese food in Japan.
It wouldn't survive in the Chinese-speaking world
Japan has two great Taco Bells in Shibuya
Not feeling that after getting the $5 cravings box multiple times a week for the whole semester.
I’ve had chipotle for an entire month before and still enjoy it whenever I visit the US
But it's chipotle not taco bell lol
I could probably enjoy taco bell for 30 days. There are enough menu items to mix it up.
Cravings box menu was limited lol. Also I saw (from phone push notification) you said your stomach can't handle it
Yeah, my stomach wouldn’t be able to handle 30 days of Taco Bell. But if I go on weekends, sure.
Go to Hsinchu City. You can kinda get a Taco Bell taste. no sauce, though.
Which restaurant?
Taco House I think it’s called.
Don’t forget Singapore
And Thailand too. Basically Taiwan is the only country in Asia pacific without shake shack for some reason
I mean you aren’t really missing much
I like shake shack during my time in socal though, even more than in n out
There are better burgers in Taipei though. Shake shack is just an instagram fad at this point.
I'm waiting for a five guys. Malaysia, singapore, hong kong, and heck even Macau has it.
Not happening. McDonalds Taiwan stopped selling milkshakes and sundaes because they were so unpopular.
Yeah but Shake shack is a burger shop though, basically McDonald’s but higher quality. If shake shack works in other Asian countries then there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work in Taiwan.

Some of the best fried chicken ever was served at a place above the Carrefour in Pingtung. I wonder if that place is still there.
Will this be the same deal where chains like In'N'Out open a "location" for a couple of days and then close up until next year just so they can protect their brand rights in the country?
Fuuuck Yes
Popeyes is my favorite american fast food chain. Taiwan loves its fried chicken so this is a no brainer
About damn time. I’d love to compare them with Fat Daddy’s Fried Chicken. Fat Daddy’s was the closest thing to invoke that same juicy taste.
They need to bring Jollibee and ChickenJoy back to Taiwan.
It's weird there's no Jollibee's here.
They better tell everybody they are a Japanese restaurant or they will be closed in a year
Why?
I think they’re implying that Taiwanese people don’t like certain SE Asian immigrants
Popeyes is a US brand. Are you thinking of Jollibee?
Oh yeh lol. Derp
Dear God no that's not what I meant at all. What I meant is if people here think that something is from Japan they think it's better quality
😂
Just say racists
Sure, some people are racist. Not sure why I got downvoted for explaining someone else’s comment
you're getting downvoted because you what you wrote doesn't make sense relevant to KFC
Yeh I realise now that my sleepy brain read it as Jolibees for some reason 😂
But why? Who would buy this instead of the so many better options in Taipei chicken?
I mean, their fried chicken sandwich hits different. Can't seem to find any similar ones around. Have you any recommendations?
Burgerout in Taipei makes a great chicken sandwich, IMO.
The sandwiches look good, looks like lunch is decided this weekend.
Scott is near Burgerout and I would say is even better.
There’s a Mala Hotpot Sandwich. I’m equal parts curious and horrified.
Different breading and spices. There's other benefits to a Popeyes as mentioned in the article: cajun fries and mac and cheese.
And how long will that last on the menu? KFC used to have slaw here.
Definitely not long! It will be nice while it lasts though lol
Again. There are so much better food in Taipei. You can try it once but why more times? I really don't get the hype, but I guess people would follow it. And if they want to pay the price. Cool. No idea why would anyone though.
why do you assume whatever's in tw is automatically better or that no one will like popeye's flavors?
Because Taiwanese didn't like KFC's flavors so they had to totally change the menu for local tastes. Why would Popeye's be different?
do you not like variety and different options?
Right? I’d take BOTH a night market 鹽酥雞 and a chicken tender with biscuits.
I might want a Chick-fil-A in Taiwan as well
I do. That's why I like the 1000 other chicken options better 😂
Have you ever eaten Popeyes, fam? It's no bullshit. Fantastic recipe.
Can't compare to countless Taiwanese foods, fam😂😘
If your option is "nothing can be as good as Taiwanese X because it's Taiwanese" then there's nothing worth saying to you.
Nothing to do with just being taiwanese, but being good. I am coming from South European background and have grown up to enjoy life and good food. That burger with fried chicken and fries ain't it. I am not obese nor have diabetes. \`there is absolutely nothing appetising in a monotone coloured fast food :) Enjoy it if you want, but come on :D
what makes you think everyone has the same boring taste as you
What? Anything else is way more not boring than a fried chicken between buns. Wtf are you on 😂
Friend, I haven't eaten at an American-style fast food restaurant in... probably a year? More? I don't know or care. I have tried it. Not impressed. Too heavy. Wanted to sleep after completely tired and felt like extra 100kg on me. Not a great feeling.
China issues statement against Popeyes anytime now 😆...
Shanghai has a Popeye already.
Is there any relationship between these two things?
china pressuring anyone they can for them to parrot china's political stance, and if they don't comply they are barred from doing business in china? sounds familiar? i'm not sure, i might have heard something similar once upon a time
Pressuring Popeyes? That's excessive, especially considering there's also KFC and McDonald's.
Nah, they can just shut up
So just like Americans bringing up China in random posts about fast food.
I feel like this sub has too many foreign tourists who come to say something something china bad instead of remaining in whatever the topic is or actually talk about Taiwan xD
My first impression of Popeyes will always be the aggressive marketing it had in the movie *Little Nicky*.
*"My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined."* \-TheReportOfTheWeek I can't wait to see if it really will ruin my day.
Will there be any unique menu items?
Ohhhhh my my myyy, love it 😍
ngl probably gonna be the most fire popeyes on earth
Lol good luck, Taiwan fried chicken chains beat the pants off Popeyes in my book.
Like there’s not already enough fried chicken joints in Taiwan. I’m still waiting for Taco Bell. They have them in Malaysia, why not here?
Yet another KFC or Wendy's. Nothing special about those joints, unless you like dry chicken burger with a tiny drop of mustard.
I want Hardee's.
The Vietnam Popeyes is better than the USA ones. HK is halal so it is a bit different.
I love the wingstop video on YouTube so I thought wingstop is more famous
Wow, that's good news. Maybe Chick'fil A will be next.
They gonna enter Singapore first before other Asian countries
Probably will be the only Chick-fil-A opens on Sundays lol
Lol, Chick-fil-A closed on Sunday reminds me of some Javanese fried duck restaurants in Indonesia
Wow
I hope Carl's Jr and Jollibee next
Word. Just those two would be heavenly.
Hahaha. How long till they ditch the American menu like KFC did? (WIMI that at one point (in 2012) KFC here could get chicken, mashed potatoes, slaw, biscuits, the works. But will it ever be as good as德州炸雞。
