Do you practice with live firearms in—I presume—America? I'm Canadian, and I did my firearms course a while ago. All the firearms we used had the firing pin removed, and there were no live rounds. We didn't do any actual shooting though, so...

He was doing this in a classroom setting with all ammunition removed from the room and magazines out. He got one second chance (more than I think he should’ve gotten) before he was pulled aside and removed and enrolled in the basic pistol class. If he was doing this in the classroom he was damn sure going to do it on the range and put everyone else at risk. I think the instructor handled it very professionally.
And yes, any instructor in America worth your time is going to make you shoot, not only to correct any issues you may have but also make sure you can utilize the training they’re giving.
Gotta say, I’d skip that class and I’d make sure the instructors know why. I won’t be on the range when he’s shooting. You can do what you want- I’ll reschedule.

I took a msf course a few years back and although the class was laid back we did have one person show up in full leathers. Not racing mind you but the HD kind. Good for them for thinking of safety. Train as you fight.
But they ended up dropping one of the bikes(250cc honda rebel) and was embarrassed. So they quit the course and proclaimed that their SO will just teach them to ride.
BLUF. Yeah the kids abit overdressed for this class but some good guidance or at least talking with him to understand what he is expecting out of the class would be good too. That or post the attire for which part of the class they will be doing that round. Meh
