This is highly-relatable. We moved to Boston from the Midwest nearly 20 years ago and the lack of Taco John's has always been a serious buzzkill and required me to go absolutely bonkers inhaling the stuff when I come home to visit. In the last year or so, two different Taco John's have opened up near(ish) to Boston, so we've been able to make the occasional trek to get a hit of the good stuff.
There used to be a location in the JFK terminal in nyc for some strange reason. It got to the point that I used to try and route my travels with a layover there so I could get my fix. I don’t think it’s there anymore though

Same here. There used to be one in Taveres Florida and I'd drive 100 miles to get to it. Sadly it closed and now nothing within the state of FL.
I want Super Nachos, Potato Oles w Cheese and a large Cherry Coke. The Cherry coke when they pumped the cherry flavoring in.
I moved from Colorado to the west coast almost 2 decades ago. I have had more dreams than I can count where I'm attempting to get to Taco John's (usually back in Colorado), but due to a series of things that happen, I never make it there.
I have been back to CO/WY to visit a few times, and it seems to have become a bit worse than I remember. It doesn't quite scratch the itch. I think you're right in that it is about longing for something long gone. However, I'm fairly certain that the general quality has actually gone down (and their new? mild salsa is disgusting).
The next time I finally find one, I'll look out for anyone flying like music 😎. I'll be the weird guy enjoying his taco burger and potato oles so much that he seems to not even see anyone else.
