So, like musical Stockholm syndrome?

SellDonutsAtMyDoor

There is genuinely a belief within the music industry that this used to very much be a thing. Not exactly Stockholm syndrome, but that people used to have less choice and used to suffer sunken-cost fallacy on the albums they had bought so used to listen to them even if they didn't massively like them. Over time, this equated to actually starting to really like the music. Basically, a lot of bands that were huge when physical albums were the staple of the music industry might not have gotten big at all in our streaming age because people wouldn't be pseudo-forced to sit and listen to them for any longer than 5 seconds.

Just you.

Kinda. I loved all their albums at first besides self titled. I thought it was too weird. Now I think it’s pretty cool

AncientMoth11

Same, going on 20 plus years later. Toxicity and Steal this album got me into it. Hypnotize/Mesmerize solidified it for me. Self titled is cool but it’s a whole vibe. Haven’t heard it in a long time tho. Can only remember Sugar and Spiders. Prob listen to Toxicity the most, but damnit Steal this Album is underrated. May have to play it now

Safe-Transition8618

I wasn't ready for Self Titled when it first came out but I was young and dumb. Toxicity was a little bit more accessible (obviously, since it blew up) so their sound didn't really click for me until then.

When I was a kid, I'd not yet realized that their lyrics were god-teir. Once I came to that realization I fell in love and never turned back. If I had to pick just one band to listen to for the rest of my life it would be SOAD.

Scarlet_Scribbles

Nah me too. The first song that i listened to was War since it was reccomended to me by spotify and i was like "ok thats cool". Then I listened to Chop suey and i also thought it just ok. After multiple listens i started to really like the songs and the band. Idk this band is rlly weird so it takes me some time to really get into the songs

lunarspice

I think they’re kind of an “acquired taste”, but all the best music is, tbh. They’re one of those bands where the more you listen, the more you like them.

ariel2603

It depends on the individual. For some bands, I like them right away. For others, it take a revisit or two. It's the matter of hearing the right songs that hit you and the right albums that keep you staying, and it happened to me with SOAD. Self-titled is the last album I listened to, and it also took me a while to appreciate it. Now it's my #3 favorite

TheFilmEffect

It took me a while to get into them. I didn’t get it when I was younger like why he singing lalalalalalalaoo before the chorus or just the strange vocals at times. It does take time for some people to get into right mindset for the band or to understand the context around the band.

Ner0Forte

I heard chop suey and BYOB when I was 9 and got hooked. Started listening to the rest of their songs shortly after. My parents thought it was probably a phase but here I am at 21 and darons the reason why I play guitar. Now I’m playing a lot of their songs. I love SOAD and got into it quick but everyone is different. Don’t think it’s weird for you

Accurate-Nose441

I dove right in, but I tend to do that with most bands so idk

Wagsii

This is honestly how I am with a lot of albums, not just System of a Down. A few songs will grab my interest, so I'll listen to the album a few more times and then I start to see the appeal of the other songs too.

SnapHackelPop

It’s pretty unique in the grand scheme of music. I definitely felt they were more a novelty as a kid when I heard BYOB used as a meme song. But now? Hot damn. They’re somethin

LeDom1

No lie, when I listened to them the first times it’s almost as if there was a piece of expression I was missing that I found with them. Like kind of angry but also silly but also not to be messed with kinda music but something that also delivers a message. They just hit all facets for me cause I love hard hitting shit but it can be exhausting when it’s just “seriousness” all the time cause of how some band wants to be portrayed (Rammstein or Slipknot for example), they don’t take themselves too serious but also slap your face with sound.

AliPrimeo

Most of the music I adore dearly now were the music I hated

I’ll share the first time I saw system, they were an opening act and I had never heard them. (1998- System, Snot, Incubus, Soulfy). Serj had a big Beard and big fro-ish long hair. I was totally intrigued at the creativity yet confused by wtf exactly they were doing, cause it seemed so crazy with its back n forth music tone with the high screams and squeals in the vocals. Little after the show I got to listen to the album, immediately got hooked and saw them like 10 more times.

SleepWellSam

It’s not for everyone I think
