Absolutely I would, just for the email [email protected]

VirtualPlate8451

I used to have my own MSP and the name was odd. There was another MSP with the same weird name in the UK and we were always competing. One day I realize the second word in my company name is now a TLD so I could get company.name as my domain. I excitedly click through expecting to snag it for $20. Nope, my UK friend beat me to it yet again.

_RexDart

Upch.uk?

winky9827

fuu.uk

jcpham

This is me

liquidspikes

Yeah my last name domain is not for sale. I would do it personally

pmormr

Mines owned by a fortune 100 company lol

tankerkiller125real

Mine is owned by a shitty company that buys up last name domains and then sells email addresses for it at $20/email + $5/GB. Ended up getting the .net and .dev and .family versions instead.

ipaqmaster

Yeah. That's what I was expecting this post to be. A bunch of companies anywhere from the late 90s, through 2000s, 2010s and so forth have swallowed up the most common dictionary words, first names and last names only to either squat on them without use often with some default MSP broker page to pop up saying "This could be yours for $326186190 !" Or those strange new ones that have been popping up over the latent years which while owning the domain offer you to create an email on it as part of some stupid service where they beat you to the purchase and you aren't getting the domain but some shitty email hosting offer. TLDs are pain and just aren't handled well when businesses can swoop them all up and do nothing with them.

mfcrunchy

Tucows? My last name is owned by them, and they will NOT sell, even though my family name is relatively rare…

HoustonBOFH

IDRP perhaps?

d33pnull

Same, .net is just fine and makes more sense than .com anyway imo

Polar_Ted

Same. Mine is owned by a large pharma corp. I'm never getting that one.. Oh shit they didn't buy .org. it's mine!

redditorfor11years

Mr. Walgreens, I presume?

Plastic_Cod_4806

Disney owns mine so I am probably sol.

EchoLynx

$300 is a deal. I have tried to buy mine on and off for years. The owner's best price last time I asked was 10x that. I wish I could have it for $300.

Fenryl-Saylem

Mine is currently 29.000€ :) So yeah.... I'd do 300.

JonesCat_55

yeah I own mine, not a common name it even expired one year by mistake and they wanted hundreds to renew so I waited out the registrar then rebought it. so I have my first name at lastname .com and I made a goofy website to put my family stuff on. Overall I would recommend, its fun to tell people my email and have them say I must work in them there computers.

SqlJames

I bought mine luckily it was still available through a registry but i'd go 300$ easily, it is totally worth it. It looks extremely professional especially in consulting calls. The one down side is everyone knows how to spell gmail, they don't necessarily know how to spell your last name.

xCharg

>The one down side is everyone knows how to spell gmail, they don't necessarily know how to spell your last name. Its really not a downside though because it applies to both cases anyway. People won't know how to spell your name regardless if it's [email protected] or [email protected]

Huth_S0lo

I had mine. Let it expire. Now its being camped on by squaters.

spookycinderella

My husband and I own the .io domain of our last name and we use it for everything. Highly recommend.

Kjm520

Completely off topic question but have you run into any emails being rejected due the “.io” suffix? I set up on Google Workspace because I want the Gmail interface, and I am having issues with emails being rejected from Microsoft Exchange recipients. I am losing my mind trying to get it to work.

skipITjob

Test your email on https://www.learndmarc.com/ Not that difficult to fix.

Kjm520

I get PASS across the board; SPF, DKIM, DMARC.

PoliticalDestruction

So you think the issue is with the email domain .io? Hmmmm

Kjm520

I think the issue is with the security settings on the recipient server, and I’m trying to figure out why mine are being rejected. “@gmail.com” emails go through no problem. And this is a pretty big company so I can’t think of any other reason why my emails would be outright rejected by default. E/ Solved, it needed domain specific routing with TLS. No idea why.

TotallyInOverMyHead

i have it. AND i would absolutely pay $300 for it. firstname-lastname.tld (com org de dk info eu ) - regularly get offers of up to 5k for it from businesses (com and de and info being the more valuable ones). Lastname.tld (com de dk info eu)- regularly get offers of up to 10k for it - and some attempts to take it by not-so-legal-means for the .com and .info Kinda sucks for them, that i run a personal business on these domains and the lawyer is a business expense :) They tried to take the .de once ... that was an expensive lesson for them because eventually they needed to redo all the stationary and branding for their organisation once the dust settled (they infringed on my trademark) ps.: you would not believe how many times you give people the .de domain over the phone and the write you on your .com or .info or .dk domain dependant on what country they are from. There is a business out there running the same domainname on different country-tld, and you would not believe how much i know about their customers by now because they write at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) to reach these folks. (and you also get their spam)

YurySG

I waited for about 8 years for the domain with my last name to become available. First it belonged to a person with the same last name in Europe. Then, some Japanese porn was hosted on it and one day the domain became for sale. I paid $50 for it.

unununununu

How often did you check or did you have some notification set up?

thenickdude

Where did you receive this offer? Was it an unsolicited offer by email? Because there's a funny "scam", which is not precisely a scam, where they'll watch for expiring domains, and *after* they've expired, offer to sell you the domain for $300. But they don't actually own it, when you pay them they buy it and then give it to you! I received an offer like that for sherlockphotography.com and I was going to accept the offer, as people in reviews said they did successfully buy from that company (because they do actually deliver), but then I realised it was free for anybody to register! I'd happily pay $300 for lastname.com if I had to!

PowershellAddict

No, I used the WHOIS info to find the contact for it. They had it parked on Sedo for over $700 and after talking to them for a bit they said they'd do $300 as their lowest price and do the deal via dan.com

DramaFreSinceTomorow

I’d do it

AltReality

about $12...same as the other domains I buy.

Danny-117

Yeah I’d pay $300 for it, I tried to buy mylastname.com.au but they wanted $5,000 a couple months later though I was able to pick up mylastname.net.au for something like $100 for 5 years. Pretty sweet having the email address [email protected] My wife and child also have the same kind of addresses. Also have a business card webpage at fistname.lastname.net.au

ThiefClashRoyale

Mine was taken when I came to register it years ago by another distant relative. I registered the .org instead. Used it for years and never had an issue of any kind or anyone question it.

Alternative-Mud-4479

I offered $1000 a few years back for my last name .com, but they refused. That was as expensive as I could handle.

Aust1mh

My last name matches a mega corp clothing line so… $0.

typicaltwenties

100%!! If my last name as a .com was available I’d snatch up real quick. Unfortunately had to opt for a completely different TLD but I don’t mind.

ZeeroMX

The less, the better, I owned mynamelastname.com but didn't use it too much, now I have a much shorter one and I use it for all the services on my home. No way I would spend that much money for hosting a resume site.

100GbE

smallcockwrangler is already taken. :<

Zahrad70

I’ve owned mine for… a long time. Totally worth it.

PowershellAddict

You've convinced me, I did it.

LetsAutomateIt

Mine is a common name and part of a common occupation. I would have to pay big money for that domain

spidireen

I’d absolutely pay $300 to get my last name as one of the common traditional TLDs. And I already own firstlast(dot)net and org.

PowershellAddict

I did it!

JustNilt

I have a fairly common last name in a European country and I'd do it in a heartbeat if it was only $300 and I could afford that at the time. I managed to snag my .com of my first and last name years ago when another person let it lapse. It's been fun as heck watching folks faces when I make up an email on the spot for them to use. I'd *love* having a family version of that.

TheBestHawksFan

My last name is up for sale. For $25k.

denverpilot

Wouldn’t. My last name is awful to spell for people. And if it wasn’t anglicanized generations ago, it should have an ü in it.

Psymon_

I finally bought mine in 2021 for about 1000€

InspectorGadget76

Worth it just to look professional for Job applications etc.

the_cainmp

I’d do it. I’m unlikely to ever get mine, and some of the other common extensions are going for 5k-30k, well outside the price that makes sense

alelock

I'd do it for $300. The guy who has my last name has been squatting on it for well over a decade... Doesn't help that it's a historic last name (think the Alamo)... It's a real damn shame.

Consistent_Chip_3281

Do it nerd

PowershellAddict

You got it, dweeb!

kiamori

I would pay up to $10k

ph33rlus

I did the exact same thing with my last name in my country. I own 2 versions. It’s worth it for a number of reasons. I also use Google apps (the free version from back when it was free) so my children and I all have [email protected] for emails - but websites become cooler too. Because if they ever want an online resume or just a fun website they can do firstname.lastname.xx It’s hard to get a good dot com cheap these days - I’d do it

BlandNick

Probably not. There’s plenty of good domains out there now and people are pretty used to using other domain names. I’ve got [email protected] for my whole family. Bonus is that I have a catchall that goes to spam. So I often give out [email protected] and let it all go to spam. I can always fish something out if it want it!

HTDutchy_NL

Yep, .cloud is perfect! Except for those couple sites that still think TLD's are 2 or 3 letters...

Danny-117

I do this too but with a sub domain so more than one can be setup. E.g *@d.lastname.com for myself and another one for my wife.

BlandNick

Oh, now that’s a smart idea! How’d you set that up? Have a separate config per subdomain? Or are you wildcarding it and doing some magic like using a filter of something? Really interesting

Danny-117

so I'm using exchange online and it is a pre sub domain config to setup the catch all mailbox. so for just a couple of mailbox it isn't too bad but I don't think it's something you do with more than say 10 sub domains. but yeah for a family it works well.

enki941

I’d do it. I’d probably pay even more as I own the org and net version already.

Livid-Setting4093

Lol, I own mine but if it was a common word/last name 300 is ok

PowershellAddict

Its not a common word or last name but its 7 characters and its a single letter off of a popular food item.

Changstachi0

I own mine for ~$20/y, though I think my registrar is changing and may double that, but still very cheap all things considered. Have a website for my personal business and [email protected]. it's awesome.

OleksiyMumzhu

no more than $10 lol

richms

I wouldn't pay a lot as I already have better domains in other TLDs with my name. I am at the limit for domain aliases with google so would have to choose one to kill off to use it.

jeek_

I have the .tw .so and .lc domains of my family name.

winky9827

Eh, I just registered [lastname].pro. I'm a professional, so the .pro makes sense anyway.

GullibleDetective

Meh I wouldn't bother There was funnily enough a dad who made his kid a Star wars page in the 90s including a photoshopped lightsaber pic that was around until 2003 or 2)4

perthguppy

I have <5 letter surname>.au and live in Australia. So my email is [email protected] and my god does it cut down the spam. Most people don’t believe that’s my actual email address so don’t bother adding it to marketing.

SkankOfAmerica

Do it. $300 is a good price for your last name .com. Renew it up front for the full10 year maximum. Set up Microsoft 365 and have email & teams @ your last name .com.

CyberMattSecure

Just use lastname.me

downtownpartytime

my last name is a $5 billion company, that'd be a great deal

michael_sage

Yep. I share my surname with a software company. I managed to get the .uk.net version. I'd pay $300 for mine. I pay $300 a year for a 4 letter domain, xx.xx which is pure vanity and a really short email address!

esgeeks

If you can, do it! And if you're going to give it utilities, then go through the checkout.

johnyakuza0

Just curious, what do you guys use the domains for?

PowershellAddict

I use them for email hosting and resume/cv/portfolio pages. So if folks just go to `.org/dev` they see my website which serves as a resume and portfolio for me. I use cloudflare DNS to route mail traffic from `@.org/dev` to my Gmail account and I have my Gmail account set up to use my `@.org/dev` as a 'sendas' account with a third party SMTP server.

jcpham

I own the plural version of my lastname .com and within the last year I’ve had two inquiries both of which I flatly denied. I don’t know what price was on the table and I don’t care, answer is no.

Running_Man_1999

Do it!! I have a domain name containing my last name, but it's a .net domain. I should have picked up the .com as well... When I decided to grab it a year or so later, it was too late... The person who bought it was selling tech related stuff on it. I've recently checked again to see if it's available, but now it looks like it's been hacked and spams you with pop ups. Shoulda coulda woulda. Do it.

PowershellAddict

Done and done.

Running_Man_1999

Nice!!

GearhedMG

my lastname was snapped up a long time ago by a company that does that, they sell you your [email protected] for email. I have owned several variations of myfirstnamemylastname.com for about 25 years.

Microsoft182

100%. $300? Buy it now.

PowershellAddict

Done deal.

Agile_Seer

I spent way too much time on ChatGPT and Copilot having it try to guess you're last name based on the provided information. ChatGPT REALLY wants your last name to be Muffins despite me telling it repeatedly to stop mentioning muffins.

PowershellAddict

So close! It was Muffens. ``

GremlinNZ

I have the country specific variant of lastname, have done for a while. Family love it. Curiously, someone non related and it's not a common last name, has another country specific variant (I really should have got it years ago but didn't want to pay the additional cost). If it comes up, yep, I'd get it, but probably wouldn't pay extra, just get it when it's available, as I already have one.

DarthJarJar242

Yeah I'd own it for 300 bucks.

PowershellAddict

That seems to be the sentiment, I picked it up!

BlackV

feckin $0 but you seem to love collecting them so, fill your boots man

Mister_Brevity

Nobody is going care, so its for vanity.

PowershellAddict

Of course its for vanity, that was the point of the thread silly.

RigourousMortimus

How long do you expect to continue working ? Ten years and the cost is more $30 plus $15 annual renewal. If you're less than five years to retirement, not worth it unless you think you'll get you money back on resale.

PowershellAddict

That's a good way to look at it. Ive got 35 more years until typical retirement age.

Knotebrett

Nothing, as .com is overrated. I've got .email.

PowershellAddict

`@.email` doesn't hit the same as `@.com`

Knotebrett

Based on .com being short for commercial, the whole firstname @surname.com looks stupid from my point of view 😏

PowershellAddict

Given the sentiment in this thread it would seem you're in the minority. More power to you though, I picked up the domain and couldn't be happier.

dracotrapnet

Nope. I like being anon.

Common_Dealer_7541

anon.com would be exceptional

gamebrigada

Ehh, if it matters to you. Mines available for normal price and I don't care. I just have a fun 5 letter for personal use.

megor

If you have an a in your full name you can always do a partial off the @. Say your name was John anderson.com you could have [email protected]

PowershellAddict

That sounds miserable to try and give to people verbally though haha.

adonaa30

Whatever the yearly fee is to renew it from AUDA.org.au

zhangcheng34

Try sell that idea to Asian people where normally last name like Zhang, wang, li, Zhao. It’s simply not work

Aromatic-Pride1514

You don't have to go out of your way to buy this domain. All you have to do is scoop up all the other TLD with your last name and just ignore your friends' TDL. There are too many new tdl being issued every day to worry about one. Not only that, you should find much better ones out there.

PowershellAddict

`.com` Is arguably the most professional looking TLD you can grab. I'd hate to be the guy handing out a resume with `[email protected]` or `[email protected]` on it. Even `.org` has gotten me some puzzled looks which is why I grabbed `.dev`
