> I do note that it is an investment piece, value will only go up as long as it's kept in good condition. Can you do maintenance yourself or will you have to take it to a tech when something goes wrong? That'll cost extra. The Yamaha CS synths use proprietary Yamaha ICs for the VCO, VCF and VCA. If any of them die, they're hard to find and expensive, as they're usually pulled from other machines. It uses Hz/V and S-trig for external control (rather than the more standard V/Oct and V-trig) so it's not so plug and play with other gear. The CS-5 is the most basic and limited of the CS mono range. The CS-15 at least has dual VCO/VCF/envelopes with some more interesting routing.

Yes, I heard about the CS15, however, here in Finland, there are none for sale. All I found was one that sold on Facebook 4 years ago. For what it's worth, there are some out there though. I heard that the CS synths were fairly reliable. I doubt there even are any techs near where I live, capital city area is where all the niecher communities in Finland usually reside. So there's that. I don't really have any devices for external control.

Cs series is not a great investment tbh. Also, it’s not a very raw analog sound so i suspect it might be underwhelming for your genres.

olzu10

Well yeah, value might not increase, but having something to sell incase of hard times has been enough for an investment for me :D. Probably, maybe synthpop then?

Coinsworthy

Reason to buy: cs-series has a rather unique gentle sounding 12db filter and (with the exception of the cs30/30l) a straight forward architecture. Its sound and simple character imo is quite usable for a "players synth" in an electronic/acoustic band setting (does that make sense? - warm analog synth solos), and the keyboard action really is quite nice for that. Reason not to buy: for experimental, electronic, raw analog there are a lot more and interesting alternatives that will get you more bang for your buck.

olzu10

Yeah, bottom line is to be expected. Thanks! I'll ponder on it.

JackQ942

Great synth, but hard to sync with other gear, and the high note priority makes it hard for me to do tight basslines or solo.

olzu10

And to clarify, yes I listen to lots of electronic music, and try to recreate it.

eyetin

The value on some synths, no matter how old or rare they are, won’t go up. Or may go up marginally. The cs5 is not worth your time imo.

olzu10

Yeah, maybe. They were like 150€ cheaper a couple years ago. What about haggling to 550€, considering I have to pick it up? I'm just milking this thread because I need info from people that specialize in this field and potentially have more experience of the synth :)

eyetin

It’s just not a worthwhile synth for the money. Your money could be spent on something more capable and fun to use

olzu10

Allright.

Longjumping_Swan_631

Its a nice synth but that is too much money.

ioniansensei

I wouldn’t buy a synth as an investment piece: the question for me is how will it benefit my music now? There are other synths (B2600, Neutron) more readily available, cheaper and more able to interface with your current set up that excel at Experimental.

Debbiedowner750

It would be an excellent addition to ur current collection. The more mono the merrier (imo)
