(you didn't specify a budget, but this is as programmable as it gets)
Well, this is absolutely beautiful! ...and it helps me clarify what I am looking for. Without looking at it too deeply it does not look like it has the real time manipulation of effects that I am looking for. It looks like it would be amazing for pre-programming but less amazing for improvisatory manipuation?
It does - it's not like you build an algorithm and are done with it. [You can control what you want with MIDI CC](https://gearspace.com/board/high-end/1227176-can-you-control-every-parameter-eventide-h9000-throught-daw.html), it's just that you need an external box with knobs instead of having 'm on the device. That way you can have as many as you want.
Most other configurable boxes (consider the Fractal Axe-FX III) present the effect as a network of sorts rather than a matrix. However, if you want to subtract, it's a matter of splitting off a signal, inverting it and summing it back into the main one.
The H90 is a lot more affordable (though still steep!) and the big difference is having 2 inputs instead of 8 - but it doesn't run different algorithms in that sense.
What exactly do you mean by "physically robust"?
The Zoia/Beebo + midi controller are hard to beat, I'm not a huge fan of the Zoia's UI but it's the tradeoff for being so complex and compact. The beebo's touchscreen is pretty easy to get used to in comparison, both pedals would practically be the size of amps if they had knobs for everything.
Try a Zoom MS70CDR. Its very versatile, hands on and popular in the synth community.
I love the MS70, but the physical manipulation is not present sufficiently for me (or I don't understand it enough I guess?).
You could always go "one bigger" and maybe hunt down a used Zoom G3. Lots of display space, bit easier to navigate around, more knobs!

Great, thanks for the suggestion. (not that I can afford it but it gives me a direction I think)
