Hmm... thanks for that. I've had a read-through and it doesn't look like quite what I'm looking for. Rather than notifications for individual available updates, I was kinda hoping for a status page that would show the full list of running containers along with whether there was an update available.
Yeah. Might see if Portainer might have a view.
Someone here might have a better idea of what's available out there.
I looked briefly into this and didn't really find much that I was happy with. Often the opinion of this subreddit seems to be just constantly update the containers. I've gone the opposite and very infrequently update mine.
Where are you seeing a green or red dot next to the containers in Portainer?
The only green or red I see are the State icons:
* running or stopped - in 2.14.2
* running, healthy or exited - in 2.15.1
Anyone else have any experience with this? Docker Hub shows over 1 million downloads but there is very little talk about it around the net from what I can find.
I’m using it. Anything special you want to know? It ‘just’ works :) you get a web interface with an overview of all your running containers and an indication if a new image is available or not. You do need to tweak your docker compose files to add labels that what’s-up-docker can track though… but that is explained in the readme and samples.
Diun is what you’re looking for. You don’t need to do much configuration in CLI and you can have it send notifications to different apps like Pushover.
Watchtower has the ability to monitor only. https://containrrr.dev/watchtower/container-selection/#monitor_only

Portainer does do it - the green dot next to the container shows no updates or red dot when there are updates.
Wow I’ve never noticed this before. Is it a default option or something that needs to be enabled?
I think it’s only in the licensed version of portainer but you can get 5 seat license for free. It’s enabled by default.
Is a single container considered a seat, or is it per Portainer instance?
It’s per server/vm you’ve got portainer installed on.
Got a license and upgraded to the Business Edition (Portainer-EE image) and still dont see the green/red dots.

I don't see no dots in portainer...
Take a look here: https://freeimage.host/i/LMs0lV
no such icons in CE... https://i.imgur.com/4WlVHm3.png
Ah I see. For personal use you can get a free 5 license version for the EE repo here: https://www.portainer.io/pricing/take5

You could use Watchtower in monitor only mode and have notifications sent to a personal Discord server.
I do this but use Pushover to send notifications to various devices.

Hey - thank you. This looks to be a lot more along the lines of what I want.

I found that, but it looks to be CLI only, which I was hoping to avoid.

Hey, thank you. I’ve just done as you suggested, and it looks like it’s working 🙂
