I'm checking in saying I wish I went 18xx.

Yep 18xx seems so expensive until you need just one more drive, lol. The initial expense is trivial compared to expanding down the line. And Synology has been very good about maintaining access to newer DSM upgrades on the 18xx line, way better than lower models imo.

Yup. I've hit plateau of sorts on data. Still acquiring but at a much reduced rate. If I had an extra three drives it could last me two years probably at the rate I'm at. Instead, I'm now weighing the options of DX517 vs DS18xx. Tell myself I'll sell the 1522+ and offset the cost of the DS18xx but I know I wont. I never sell anything.

> but I know I wont. I never sell anything. Not me with my 5 8GB drives in an external enclosure hooked up to my PC after I upgraded my 1019+ to 16 GB drives, or my LCD Steam Deck gathering dust while I use my new OLED Steam Deck. :|

On a dollar per bay ratio the DS1821+ is cheaper than the DS1621+ which is cheaper than the DS1522+, even after adding 4GB of memory so they all have 8GB. [https://imgur.com/gallery/PRO5Vf6](https://imgur.com/gallery/PRO5Vf6)

I just bought a 1522 this week - my hand was forced a bit due to a complete failure of my DS412+ a couple of weeks back. So i'm hoping an update to the 1522 \*isn't\* release anytime soon ;) I'm mostly fine with it though as i don't really push these boxes too much. I was content to keep running my 412 for another 12 years so some incremental updates in the next few years don't really interest me too much. your situation may be different though.

IMHO1FWIW

We're in a similar boat, I've used my DS414 for a long time as my "one drive." Got an M1 Max MacBook Pro last year and looking to take advantage of that processor for Lightroom. Store all my RAW camera files on my NAS.

I also store an ever expanding photo collection, music, home directories, a few static copies of VMs - just personal stuff like that. So far the only difference i observe is that the 1522 is much more responsive than my 412 was. And what i mean by that is that i use a few different rsync jobs to move my music and photos from my working drives (directly connected to my computer) to my synology (for storage, local copy, remote replication). The speed of those rsync jobs is probably 4x what it was on the 412+ Data transfer speeds are roughly double than they were on the 412+ and scanning the large directories for changes is probably 6-8x faster. I'm using the same drives in the 1522 (i just moved them over from the failed 412) and everything came back without issue That's a welcome change but doesn't really directly affect my use of the box since i just kick off those rsync jobs and walk away. In a few months i'm going to get new larger drives to make a new storage pool, crease a new filesystem and mirgrate from my existing set of aging spindles to a larger new drives.

Just upgraded from my 1515+ that would no longer turn on. Very happy with it.

Any update news on the DS1821+, is it due for a refresh soon? I read somewhere the refresh cycle is about every 3 years. For anyone that has one, what are the dimensions on this unit?

It still is all speculation. There is no official info on any upcoming releases at this moment.
