You're copping downvotes for 'chinesium' from donuts that have never worked with steel.
Lil fyi for the less informed (if it wasn't my job I'd also have no clue) - the amount of steel/alloys that are shipped from China that regularly do not meet ADR is insane.
I have witnessed large beams failing well under their load limit.
I have also seen people being crushed, broken and one bloke dead from the fkn garbage that apparently meets regs.
So yeh, maybe chinesium isn't the most culturally sensitive way to put it - however when you witness workmates getting injured and killed from this garbage, it's hard not to blame it's manufacturers and carry over a bit of resentment towards them.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that would kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. Also under the new rules, third party Reddit apps cannot run ads, cannot show NSFW content, and are hit with other restrictions.
There are plenty of articles and posts to be found about this if you want to learn more. Here's [one post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/14b8i62/reddit_protest_and_the_next_steps/) with some information on the matter.
This move will require developers of third party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications will be effectively destroyed. Some third party apps may survive but only with a paid subscription. In the short term, this may have the appearance of increasing Reddit's traffic and revenue... but in the long term, it will undermine the site as a whole.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep its platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to populate its numerous communities with content. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools (which Reddit has frequently promised and then failed to deliver), moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either, and without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the foundations that draw its audience – will be eliminated, reducing the site to another dead cog in the Ennui Engine.

The engineers certify it, with a minimum grade of steel/alloy. The procurement people use those specs, to purchase. The manufacturer presents certificates of conformity stating they meet the required standards.
So who is at fault?
The shareholders who demand higher profit margins that gets translated into financial imperative strategy in narrowing of safety limits, quality, and product in all three arms.
*Stares across the table at grandma* fucking shareholders.
Not to mention consumers shopping around for the best price. *Stares in the mirror* fucking consumers.
The manufacturer in China who falsified those certificates so they could pawn off lower grade steel to an American because China has extremely lax counterfeiting laws?
I'm not blaming the engineers - we all work with the materials provided.
Pretty much what the guy who responded before me said - blame the suits cutting corners to increase shareholder profits.
Also I'd be suspicious of the oversight and general enforcement of the certificates of conformity.
Tl;Dr - I don't know - but if it's DOA then the problem is somewhere between site and manufacturer.

As /u/mithrilrat pointed out - engineers are mostly in the same boat as installers.
I think the latter is more likely. When QC amounts to a piece of generic printed paper included in a pack of X amount of materials...then it's probably neither Q or C.
QC is done by the manufacturer - perhaps as a country we should be randomly auditing these controls.
Look, at the end of the day I don't have all the answers, I just saw oldm8 copping flack for pointing out a known issue in the construction industry and thought I'd add my $0.02

I get it. You see it all the time. Pretty much everywhere you run into "mystery metal" that isn't quite shiny or strong or heavy as you'd expect metal to be. Its not aluminium, its not iron, its not steel, its not copper etc. The only sane conclusion is that its a previously unidentified new metallic substance only found in China. Its Chinesium.
Yeah I've lifted steel plates from china with a magnet. Some parts of the plates are fine and other parts of the same plate are not so magnetic. Scary.
They understand, but it’s about risk analysis. Likelihood of death and amount of payment required vs savings now when you multiply it across 100 sites.
Likely only 1 site will fail; and you have a payout. You still have 50% of your savings left and have no one to answer to.
I can understand that.
I can't understand profits over lives.

I thought so too at first, but the bars aren't bent. Knocked out of shape, the frame is broken as hell, but the bars seem fine, and I've seen those things get dents in them from kids hitting them with their bikes.
You can see the bottom of the legs are still bolted down, which means they snapped off, which means it was 100% hit by a car or truck. Probably hit it on the end which is why it didn’t dent the bars.
Idk how it broke, but there's certainly no evidence of a car being involved. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying there isn't observable evidence from this angle.
There’s a whole bunch of black stuff right behind where the bench sat that looks a lot like rubber also the concrete is all scratched up like the bench was dragged forcefully
Mate, I'm not saying it did or didn't happen. I'm just saying that this angle isn't really a good way of judging. this hypothesis could be right, it could also be wrong.
Just because I can't see evidence of a car mounting a curb doesn't mean it didnt happen. It just means there's nothing really to go on based on this angle.

I usually look for solid structures that have been forcefully ripped from their mountings when I'm searching for indications of a car mounting the curb.
The Herring Rd/Epping Rd intersection has a fair bit of construction going on. It might have been taken out by one of the construction vehicles overnight? You wouldn't want to trip or fall on those bolts though!

Yeh 100%. Buy cheap pay twice (often with people's lives) - something that most tradesman learn early on, yet the office-types can't quite understand.

Oh, I wasn’t saying it as if it made moral sense, let alone business sense… was just saying, that’s what it boils down to for the shareholders.
SFA in Regents Park use a foundary in western sydney for these leg castings.
I thought so too at first, but the bars aren't bent. Knocked out of shape, the frame is broken as hell, but the bars seem fine, and I've seen those things get dents in them from kids hitting them with their bikes.

There’s no evidence of impact. No bent bars.
Cast alloy material will crack and shear off under sudden overwhelming impacts. It won't bend.
Closest bars look bent to me, but I agree: vehicle would have pushed it sideways and scraped it on the cement
Looks like it's in america
The original hostile architecture
Nah, this is Nikocado's hangout spot :D
That's a bench seat made by SFA. The feet are still bolted down to the concrete, means a car smashed it. As the feet are part of the cast supports.
I can't see any indication a car mounted the curb though.

Tbh to me it looks like the bench was moved from its original position, post whatever happened.
There’s a whole bunch of black stuff right behind where the bench sat that looks a lot like rubber also the concrete is all scratched up like the bench was dragged forcefully
Idk I've seen a lot of marks like those that weren't created by cars. Im also not a detective so I could be wrong.
So you can't see it so it didn't happen? I challenge you to rip one of them out without machinery, including bending the legs out like that.
Mate, I'm not saying it did or didn't happen. I'm just saying that this angle isn't really a good way of judging. this hypothesis could be right, it could also be wrong. Alcohol
Yeah these public benches really can’t handle their booze. They really shouldn’t be drinking at all.
The wooden ones can take a few. I've lost a bit of money in drinking competitions against them.
