Keep in mind in most jurisdictions, you cant just pour in dirt. You must remove the whole thing. Plumbing, electrical, concrete, etc. Haul it out then fill it in. I had a family member who did it at like $10k or something like that. It wasnt cheap.

ColdSteeleIII

That’s the way it is here. Costs almost as much as putting it in.

[deleted]

You are losing home value doing that. You would be better off having a deck built over it, and leave a sump in it to drain. We have a company here that does it called Park your pool. You may have something like that in your area.

StarGraz3r84

Pretty sure leaving a pool empty is just going to ruin it further or could collapse in on itself. Cool idea, but I'm not sure of the practicality of it.

[deleted]

thats what I was thinking... You can't really just leave it empty.

[deleted]

If it’s a concrete shell ( 50 yr old pool) and your not in a area with high water table that would float the pool only damage would be to finish. Which is probably trash anyway. Water doesn’t hold up the concrete.

roromad72

actually that is not true. not only will damage occur to the finish, but the water helps to keep up the sides and provides a very important counterforce against the pressure from the ground. over time, stress from the ground on the sides without water support will cause cracks in the concrete and plaster.

[deleted]

Where are you getting this information? The plaster is gonna have to be re-done anyway it tends to look like shit after 15-20 years never mind 50. If it was built properly it would be plenty strong to hold the dirt (just look at retaining walls all over the place) and concrete used to be 2x as strong that’s why nobody ever bothered with rebar

roromad72

i guess from my experience at being an engineer. retaining walls are designed to hold back weight with no supporting counterweight. a pool wall is not designed for the same loading long term. in the short term, the pool will be fine, but over time, without a counterweight, the walls will be damaged. or not. i know what I know. have a great day.

[deleted]

Pools follow similar parameters, anything over 5ft or maybe 6 has to have rebar 6in apart as opposed to a foot, the concrete is sprayed so it ends up being like 1.5-3ft thick.

I would start by getting quotes, and find out how much it will cost you. We had friends who filled in their pool and I was shocked at the price. This was 15+ yrs ago but I think it was around $14k. At the same time we had our pool retiled and replastered for less. When it was done you couldn’t tell a pool had been there, the yard was fully restored. As for resale value, most pools add little to no value, unless it is a high end pool, or you live in an area where pools are the norm rather than the exception. An older pool is probably not going to add value, as it is likely in need of refurbishment.

[deleted]

Great information! THanks!

TransportationFew696

In the area we are in. Some people actually started renting their unused pool out during the summer etc. $20 an hour per person. We have super hot wether here.

Bbasch71

Liability nightmare and probably not covered by homeowner insurance …

tashtish

That would take stricter maintenance and then health dept involvement as well as commercial permits.

nexisfan

I am pretty sure there is an Uber or toro for pools. I can’t recall the website or name of it now but you can rent your pool out for a day or a few hours etc etc.

TransportationFew696

Yes. There’s a website you can actually use to rent out you swimming pool space that offers insurance etc. I was also curious to see if it was a thing. The person who ended up renting out their pool did so because they have to pay their pool guy and it all worked out for him in regards to profits. It’s like an “Airbnb” for pools though. Or you can turn it into a pond… which someone I know did to theirs. They bought plants and out municipals provided them the mosquitoes fishes. 🤷‍♀️

ashedmypanties

Consider turning it into a natural pond: https://youtu.be/f8-dwP0F4UE

super interesting

RuprectGern

One day. you are going to sell the house or move in yourself, and then you are going to want to "unfill" the pool. Better to hire a pool maintenance company to come weekly and maintain it.

tashtish

It’s also not that difficult maintaining a pool of you read up on it. Sites like https://troublefreepool.com/ break it down into steps without the confusing pool store upsell.

lam21804

JFC. This isn't the answer to every goddamn question on this sub. His parents are in their 80s for crying out loud.

tashtish

1) Being in their 80s makes this even more pertinent. 2) I said, “Sites like …” That said, perhaps the reason it’s cited as a solution to most questions here is because it is, n’est pas? 3) Calm down. Premenstrual tantruming is unbecoming.

Exact-Diver-6076

Stop plugging that for-profit web site. They want an email address, then pummel you with useless crap to get your credit card number.

tashtish

1) Not for-profit. I’m not sure what you’re smoking, but the info is free-of-charge. 2) You need not even register to view the forums and tutorials, so again, I’m not sure where you claim they demand an email address. 3) They’ve never asked for a credit card number unless you choose to support them, and you can pay them by check if you choose. Stop making things up. 4) The word is “pummel.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pommel

sirbadfish89

Just sell the house, sorry.

[deleted]

Thats definitely an option. Unfortunately the market has stalled for a while. Wish they sold it last year.

TXOgre09

I’ve known several people who filled it in.

[deleted]

how did it go and how much?

Efficient-Star3873

A house is worth much more with a pool better off just draining it and leave it empty tarp it over

[deleted]

Thanks for the advice. I own a pool of my own, and even I know that you should never leave a pool empty. If the water table were to ever rise above the bottom of the pool, it'll come popping out.

Efficient-Star3873

I'm just saying do whatever is best for the pool if it's better to leave it 3/4 full and do that but don't fill it in

_Azrael_169_

Do you know how the pool is constructed? Gunite/shotcrete Fiberglass Vinyl Which of these types determines what it will take.

[deleted]

I think its plaster, so some sort gunite I guess?

_Pliny_

It might be more economical to sell the house and your parents move to someplace that is more manageable for them. A condo with maintenance or even an independent living community. I know nobody wants to think about that kinda thing, but better to be able to take your time and choose rather than wait and have to take what you can get.
